brackish and freshwater regions as well as swamps of eastern india southeast asia and northern australia they are excellent swimmers and have often been seen far out at sea [Music] number two hunting [Music] saltwater crocodiles lurk patiently beneath the surface near the water's edge waiting for potential prey to stop for a sip of water they will feed on anything they can get their jaws on including water buffaloes monkeys wild boar and even sharks when swimming in the open sea without warning they explode out of the water propelled by their powerful tails and with the strongest bite
force in the entire animal kingdom and teeth up to 5 inches 13 centimeters long grasp their victim and drag it back in holding it under water until the animal drowns as well as performing their infamous death row where the prey gets ripped into pieces number three reproduction [Music] like all reptiles saltwater crocodiles reproduce through internal fertilization and females carefully watch over their nests after laying around 40 to 60 eggs in addition to protecting their eggs from potential predators females carry the new hatchlings to nearby bodies of water so that they will not be harmed during
that dangerous first journey and even after that they continue to protect the young for several months after interestingly enough the temperature of the nest determines the sex of the hatchlings cooler nests produce mostly females while warmer nests produce mostly males [Music] number four threats to survival although they have few natural predators saltwater crocodiles have been hunted by humans for many decades their eggs and meat are eaten and their skin is especially valuable to be used as material for bags shoes and other goods these activities have threatened the saltwater's crocodile's numbers in the past and the
species has historically been considered highly vulnerable to extinction recent conservation efforts have allowed a population recovery in some places and currently a saltwater crocodile has full legal protection in australia and other places and number five modern dinosaurs dinosaurs are reptiles which also include turtles snakes and crocodiles and although they split off early on dinosaurs and these animals share common ancestors modern crocodiles and alligators have barely changed from their ancient ancestors of the cretaceous period which was about 66 145 million years ago that means that animals that were almost identical to the ones you can see
