how to think in English when it's time to speak when you're having conversations in English well in this English lesson I'm going to share three strategies three things you need to implement if you want to think more quickly during conversations in English anywhere anytime if you don't know me very well hi how's it hanging I'm teacher bricks and I'm going to help you talk to anyone anywhere anytime in English consider subscribing because every week there's a different kind of English lesson to help you become a better and more confident English speaker so here we go
before I give you tip number one and by the way I have a bonus tip at the end so stay with me I need to tell you something that I feel like it's my obligation to do so which is thinking in English will not happen naturally I'm a no native speaker I imagine you are a non native speaker so this is not going to be natural for us I'm not going to wake up on morning and just think as native speakers do that's not how it works so you need to give your brain the right
stimulus so that it can gradually think in English more quickly so that when it's time to speak you don't get stuck every five seconds because you're translating in your head so the three strategies that I'm going to share in this lesson will help you with that that being said tip number one improve your reaction time with more more Under Pressure speaking exercises as I often mention here on my channel speaking is a skill I must practice so in order to think in English I also have to exercise my brain that way and to do that
I need to bring more speaking Under Pressure exercises when you time yourself and you need to answer a specific question and you don't give yourself much time to think about the question to think about the answer so this is a speaking practice that will help you work on your thoughts in the middle of a conversation so this is what you do in the practice time because when you're with your boss or with a client or on the phone that is not practice time anymore that's Showtime so to be able to think in English when you
speak in the middle of a meeting a casual conversation on the street you need to put pressure on yourself when practicing you need to condition your brain to react more quickly and how do we do this this is more connected to speaking practicing your English speaking than thinking because I could come here and just say think which is a nice tip okay but that is not enough because when we're having conversations we are under pressure because we want to perform well we want to deliver our message so to do that you need to have more
realistic practices and a speaking exercise will do the trick because I ask you a question right now and then I set a timer of one minute go no time to waste no time to check a dictionary no time to to ask Chad GPT to give you an answer you have to think about the answer and the constant repetition of putting the pressure okay I have one minute I have to do the best I can in one minute the repetition of this pressure practice will make you think more in the English language okay this is how
you practice your English speaking and consequently your ability to think in English if you catch yourself every time someone asks you a question even a simple one if you catch yourself doing this um uh and uh uh uh you're not teaching yourself to speak under pressure as a result when it's time to speak in the real world you slow down and you translate in your head and you have this internal dialogue in your language so to reduce this which will make you sound even more professional you need to do this kind of speaking exercise where
you pressure yourself under a certain amount of time to speak as much as you can Priscilla what if I am doing this practice and I do this uh practice mindful silence because it's an exercise when you're answering a question and you catch yourself not knowing silence is key it's better to be quiet than to be doing these sounds making these sounds like crazy so this is practice the more you practice this the more you will reduce the okay got it moving on mindful thinking yes you will need to think sorry I know it is obvious
but it has to be mindful I can't just start here right now well I can because I've been doing this for such a long time that a lot of my internal conversations my internal dialogues are in the English language so it is easy for me to remember that but in your case if you're watching this lesson it means that it's not so simple for you and I get it that's why you're here so to think in English as I mentioned at the beginning you need to have intention you need to be intentional with this moment
and the best way to navigate through this practice is by establishing a starting point and how do I start thinking in English if I don't know how to do that well I will use questions and stories short stories so that I can understand how to do this more smoothly okay and I will give you an example how do you do that you can turn pretty much guys any speaking exercise into a thinking exercise any exercise can be done here but as I said it has to be intentional otherwise it is not going to work so
let's say right now I want to put this into practice I would me Priscilla I would pick five questions related connected okay perhaps about my my job perhaps about my family or technology or social media or F question or the latest news I would pick five questions and if I don't know how to create questions I would use Google Chad DPT and I even teach this in my ebook 20 speaking exercises you can do alone and how to use Chad GPT to correct your English not perfectly but very nicely you know it's it's getting better
but the focus here is this I would pick the five questions and then in tip number three is going to help you even more with this dip and I would start answering here not here here how do I organize this answer how do I do this and then I would start organizing my thoughts this is a process that takes time okay guys this is not going to happen overnight but do this give this a go and you will notice change and before I continue make sure to share this video with a friend or simply hitting
the like button you know that really helps the channel and if you feel like this is going to help someone sharing is scary but that being said let's move on to tip number three think before you speak that is a little different from Mindful thinking because mindful thinking is simply the act of stopping stop right now thank you very much sitting down and thinking about things because if you want to think in English then you have to teach your brain and show hey stop thinking stop think about it when I'm doing the dishes when I'm
taking a shower when I'm getting ready when I'm walking on the treadmill I remind myself hey think in English but here think before you speak is an exercise as I said any speaking exercise can become a thinking exercise so whenever you sit down to study before answering a question you're going to set 30 seconds you're going to set a timer okay 30 seconds T and then you will think about the the answer organizing your thoughts and educate your brain of course you don't have 30 seconds in real life but it's this is a conditioning exercise
I want you to get better at this so I don't have a magic solution I'm afraid you will need to spend time doing doing this exercise so that you can think more quickly when you have to speak English okay and after the and after the 30 seconds are over then it's time to speak you will not have the perfect answer you will not have everything figured out but this is a great start and when it's time to answer then I would answer the question for 45 seconds to a minute that's good enough the purpose here
is to condition your brain to remember to think in English that's what I want but you have to teach you have to remind your brain your brain is l easy wants to be in your native language because it's more comfortable okay but it's in the discomfort that you grow now for different purposes let's say for vocabulary purposes to help you polish your vocabulary then you can include writing then this 30 seconds would be writing okay but this is a different kind of practice but it's a good one I sometimes when I'm practicing my English speaking
I do this exercise but I do it in writing I it I I give myself 30 seconds to prepare then I outline key words or maybe a phrasal verb or an expression I want to use and then when the time is up I answer but Priscilla it's not enough time that's the idea it shouldn't be enough time because in real life you don't have enough time to use the best phrasal verb or expression or to give the most beautiful answer that everybody's going to be like wow wow where did you learn English you don't have
time you have to use what you got but to get to that stage where you feel okay I did a decent job you need to prepare so this will never be enough time that is normal that that's part of the exercise okay now one example here let's suppose I'm asking you this question which social media platform do you prefer Instagram Tik Tok or YouTube I like YouTube the best simply the best I love it okay so this is the question I want to ask and why give it give reasons simply saying oh I like YouTube
why so I would set a timer 30 seconds to think and then I would cook up the answer in my head which one do I prefer and I would do this dialogue in English that's the goal so I have to force okay this will not happen naturally I need to remind hey English now English now okay he social media I like YouTube I like be I like Instagram but I prefer YouTube because they have longer video formats I feel like I can create a connection with the the YouTuber the the influencer okay and then the
time's up then I have to speak then I will put the words out so you have this warmup this preparation for your English speaking exercise now it's showtime and as I mentioned in other videos that's not the goal of this video but I would record my answer so that I can listen and analyze possible mistakes there are other videos here on my channel where I talk about the benefit of writing down you know recording yourself and transcribing your answer that's not the goal of this video the goal of this video is to make you think
okay so in your head think in English hear your voice in your head no I'm not crazy some people hear their voices in their minds because you're creating the conversation in your mind so this would be an example you of how you can Implement uh the tip number three because it works but it's not going to work only once it's the repetition of this practi it's the compounding fact in the long run that is going to help you think more quickly and in English when it's time to speak and bonus tip use the Dual code
strategy what is that supposed to mean when you're studying you have to think that even though you're not in America or in Canada or in Australia or in England in in England excuse me you have to immerse in the English language anyone anywhere anytime that's what I teach here on my channel so that I can speak confidently anywhere anytime when I studied English I studied in my home country you know my country Brazil I didn't go abroad to learn English later I traveled to improve and get to know a different a different culture but I
was fluent in my country and what did I do I used the I used the the Dual Cod strategy I immersed in the English language that means that basically means you will have two different representations of the information Visual and verbal so here I study Italian okay these are my examples in Italian I was a studying grammar then I here I have a short explanation with verb conjugations because that's what I was studying and here I have my examples every now and then I look at that and then I think oh okay all right that's
and then I I read the the examples in my head when I do this with images I don't always print the images but I see them on Google Images so that I can remind myself and then in my head I remind myself of what the word means okay so whenever you're studying new vocabulary Expressions phrasal verbs have this mental dialogue have the visual representation maybe an image or maybe a short description and then visualize it in your head think about it in your head oh okay yeah I learned this last week I created some examples
I watched the video about this do all of this recap in your mind okay this is good guys describe things to yourself maybe you can put on Google Images some images that you know well that you know what they are in English describe them in your head this is an excellent exercise other than that my friends I hope you enjoyed this video make sure to share it with a friend but other than that I'll see you in the next one bye
