today you will learn how to introduce yourself confidently in English even as a native English speaker I still find it very useful to have some goto phrases and words that I use when making an introduction today I'll teach you how to apply some of these phrases and terms so that you can introduce yourself naturally and confidently in the English language now before we jump into how to structure a confident introduction in English it's important that you understand the different levels of formality in the English language first we have the formal level and the formal way
of communicating in English this is usually used in very serious business or professional settings such as if you're in a court of law if you were convicted of a felony or a crime or funerals or some religious ceremonies where everyone communicates in a very formal way just a notch below formal are semiformal settings these could be casual Business and Professional settings just like a cocktail or a business function semiformal ways of communicating are also used when communicating with the elderly such as your grandparents maybe other people's grandparents or just people over let's say the age
of 65 you should also communicate in a semiformal way when communicating with complete strangers so for example if you wanted to tap someone on the shoulder and interrupt them during the their day to ask them a question or ask them for directions you should speak in a semiformal way which comes off as more polite a notch below semiformal would be informal and Casual ways of communicating now if you're going to speak informally I would really just do it with friends family and acquaintances there is a bit of a gray area between semiformal ways of speaking
and informal ways of speaking but honestly it's not the end of the world if you mix up the two together and Below informal and Casual ways of speaking I would call this the vulnerable way of speaking now the vulnerable way of speaking is probably the most informal way you could possibly communicate with anybody in the English language this should only be used with close friends close family members or romantic Partners when communicating in a vulnerable way this can come off as very goofy it could be very raw and very authentic it could be very aggressive
you should only use it with people who you are very close with and have a very unique relationship with you should never communicate this way with complete strangers or people who you're trying to leave a good impression now let's get into the first aspect of your introduction it will be greetings now the most common ways to greet someone formally would just be by saying hello or good good morning good afternoon or good evening now a semiformal way of greeting someone would be hi there or hello there it's still a little bit formal but also a
little bit more loose and a little bit more casual now if you're going to greet someone in an informal or casual way you could just say hi hey or yo often times native English speakers even greet each other with questions such as what's up how you doing or how's it going note that often times native English speakers do not follow the correct grammatical rules of the English language in fact we break the grammatical rules all the time literally all the time so for example if you say how you doing that's what a lot of native
English speakers say even though technically it's how are you doing but we'll say things like how you doing you good what's up or what you saying you know it's all in formal and Casual ways that will actually greet someone with a question when really all we're trying to say is hello and if you want to greet someone in a vulnerable way again only use this with people who you are extremely close with but you could say things along the lines of what's popping what's cracking what's happening or what's on the halfs as you can see
these are very fabricated ways to speak English and again even if you choose not to speak this way you will for sure come across a ton of native speakers who make up words in the English language and use very unusual and uncommon slang terms in English even if you choose not to use them it's still a good idea to understand what they're talking about when they speak like this now the next part of your greeting will simply comprise of general information or high level or Surface level information now the most common aspects of giving general
information in an introduction would be your name your birthplace and your current location in all other instances if you want to introduce yourself or your name you could just say I'm Arc nice to meet you use your first name and say nice to meet you that's applicable for every other setting but if you want to be extra formal you could say please to meet you or it's a pleasure or it's a pleasure to meet you now when it comes to your birthplace and current location a formal way to say this would be something along the
lines of I originate from New York however I'm currently based in Los Angeles I've been living here since 2020 now if you want to make this a little bit more casual or use it in a semiformal setting you could say I was born and raised in New York but now I live in LA I've been living here for around four years and again if you want to articulate this in a very vulnerable way you can just add some humor to it or make a joke out of what you're saying for example I came from the
cold streets of New York but now I live in la la land I've been here for a minute now now if you understood any of those slang terms or Expressions I just used in that example then I commend you your english comprehension skills are Advanced but if you didn't understand it don't worry you're not supposed to as someone who doesn't speak English as a first language but native English speakers will make jokes they'll play with their words communicate in flexible and madeup ways such as this now the next part of your introduction should be talking
about your occupation now a formal way to introduce yourself and your occupation would be something along the lines of I'm the founder and chief executive officer at the English language School Arc English or you could say something like I'm employed as an English coach for the English language School Arc English or I'm currently unemployed and looking for opportunities in the language learning industry now if you want to take this down a notch to semiformal and make it a little bit more casual you could say I'm the founder of Arc English or I'm an English coach
at ARC English or I'm self-employed in the field of Education or lastly I'm unemployed and looking for opportunities in the education field and a very informal way to say this would just be really short and really simple I run an education company I'm an English coach I help people learn English I'm self-employed if you really want to keep it simple and Casual those are four easy ways you could explain your occupation to somebody now the next part of your introduction should be introducing your level of Education now a formal way to introduce your level of
Education could be I graduated in 2020 with a bachelor's degree majoring an English language art at Harvard University or I'm currently studying to earn a PhD in English language arts at Harvard University now if you want to make this a little bit less formal you could simply say I recently graduated from Harvard with a bachelor's degree I majored in English or I'm currently studying at Harvard to become an English professor and again if you just want to keep it casual and you just want to keep it simple you can just say I recently graduated from
Harvard or I'm a student now the next aspect of your introduction should also involve your experience this could be your work experience or just your general life experience now a more formal way to articulate your experience could be I have 10 years of experience helping ESL students become fluent in English or I've worked in the education industry for 10 years now a more informal or casual way to articulate your experience could be I've been doing this for around 10 years or I've been in the industry for about 10 years and again if you want to
express this in a vulnerable or goofy way with someone who you're close with you could say I've been around the block when it comes to helping people with their English again don't use this with complete strangers or people who you don't know that well only use that with people who you're close with or else they might be confused they may be very uncomfortable with what you're saying it's just best to reserve the vulnerable way of speaking with people who you're very close with and you really really trust and the last aspect of your introduction should
just be something about your personal life or your hobbies a formal way to say this would be in my spare time I enjoy going for hikes in the mountains or in my spare time I enjoy going fishing and a more simple and Casual way to say it would be I enjoy exercising when I can or I enjoy the outdoors or I enjoy hiking and of course a vulnerable way to articulate this would be I'm a big hiking guy or I'm very outdoorsy again when you say something like I'm very outdoorsy just a thing that native
English speakers do where they make up words to articulate a feeling or invoke some sort of emotion about what they do who they are or whatever it is that they're describing so again to recap if you want to have a strong solid and confident introduction in English it should involve the following aspects a greeting high level or general information such as your name birthplace and current location your occupation or what you're trying to do as your occupation your level of Education or what you're currently studying as a student your experience and something about your person
personal life such as your hobbies now let's take a look at a few examples of all of these aspects put together into one solid introduction and keep in mind you can mix up formal and informal terms and phrases when giving your introduction it doesn't have to be 100% formal and it doesn't have to be 100% casual however you should be able to sense which level of formality that you should be using based on the person that you're interacting with so let's look at an example that is mostly formal good afternoon my name is Ark English
it's a pleasure to make your acquaintance I originate from New York however I'm currently based in Los Angeles I've been living here since March of 2021 I'm the founder and chief executive officer at the English language School Arc English I graduated in 2020 with a bachelor's degree made majoring in English language arts at Harvard University I have 10 years of experience helping ESL students become fluent in English in my spare time I enjoy hiking so as you can see that was pretty formal it sounded a little bit uptight and a little bit stiff but that
is how people communicate formally in English now let's look at an informal or casual example of an introduction hi I'm Arc English nice to meet you I was born and raised in New York but now live in LA I've been living here for around 4 years I now run an education company I recently graduated from Harvard I've been involved in the education field for roughly 10 years in my spare time I enjoy the outdoors so you can see a pretty big contrast between formal and informal informal and Casual is clearly a lot more simple now
