almost 50 years ago in a world without modern computers we wrote Our thesis with very different tools this is the story of how I wrote my thesis at the Carl's ruer University of applied sciences technology and economics using Fortran and Punch Cards Fortran short for formula translation was the language of scientists and engineers in the 70s with its strict formatting and fixed column it was specifically tailored to the main frames of the time we wrote Our code on Punch Cards one card for each line of code which were later entered into the computer by operators
back then there were no interactive development environments our code recorded on Punch Cards was submitted to the computer as a batch job it was a meticulous and often timeconsuming process where errors only became visible hours later on green white striped paper a stack of cards contained the entire program and the system processed them in one go I still vividly remember the excitement and challenges I faced while writing my thesis despite the technical limitations it was a time of pioneering Spirit a time when Innovation and patience went hand in hand this experience not only shaped my
