you're confident intelligent and well educated you have a knack for debate a mind sharpened by years of learning and a strong conviction in your beliefs but what if I told you that the very intelligence you're so proud of may actually be your greatest weakness that the smarter you are and the easier it is for you to fall into the Trap of delusion it's not the ignorant or the foolish who are most susceptible to false beliefs it's the Brilliant Minds the people who think they know better smart people people like you are the most likely to
cling to irrational beliefs twist logic to serve their own biases and convince themselves of Lies this isn't just speculation it's science let's start with a prime example of how intelligent people can be led astray by fashionable delusions the rise of woke ideology wokeism reduces the complexity of the world to a simplistic Narrative of oppressors and victims it tells people that if you're white straight or male you're inherently an oppressor and if you're non-white LGBT or female you're a victim this worldview isn't based on objective reality it's a delusion born out of a need to Signal
virtue and gain social status in Progressive circles but here's the kicker it's not uneducated people pushing these ideas it's the intellectual Elite graduates from prestigious universities professors with multiple phds and influential figures in media and politics these are people who can construct elaborate arguments site complex theories and weave intricate narratives all in service of a fundamentally flawed ideology the delusions don't stop there in Academia entire Fields have been built around these false beliefs take fat studies for instance this field emerged in the late 1960s to argue that fat people are oppressed in a world that
favors slimness but instead of focusing on The Proven health risks of obesity fat studies Scholars Twisted logic to claim that anti-fat attitudes are more harmful than obesity itself some have even gone so far as to argue that fighting obes is a form of white supremacy let that sink in we live in a world where highly intelligent people are using their Brilliance to argue that obesity is healthy and that scientific facts about its health risks are just tools of Oppression these aren't crackpot ideas found on the fringes of society these are views being taught in prestigious
universities and championed by influential figures in media and politics if you think this is a new phenomenon think again throughout history intelligent people have fallen for and propagated dangerous delusions in the 1800s the dominant ideology in America was white supremacy and many so-called intellectuals used their reasoning abilities to justify slavery Samuel cartright an American physician went so far as to invent a mental disorder called drape tomania which he claimed caused slaves to want to escape his solution whip the devil out of them it was an idea so idiotic that only an intellectual could have come
up with it sound familiar today we have equally absurd ideas like white fragility and sex is a spectrum that are pedal by some of the brightest Minds in Academia these aren't harmless mistakes they're delusions that warp our society degrade our institutions and Destroy lives but why what is it about intelligent people that makes them so vulnerable to delusions to understand this we need to look at the science in 2013 Yale law professor Dan Kahan conducted an experiment Kahan wanted to test how intelligence affected political bias so he measured participants reasoning abilities with something called the
cognitive reflection test the results were shocking the highest scoring individuals those deemed the most intelligent were the most likely to show extreme political bias the smarter you were the more likely you were to twist facts and reasoning to fit your ideology whether liberal or conservative and it didn't stop there Kahan and his team found that when the same participants were given statistical data that related to a neutral topic like skin rash treatments they were able to objectively analyze the data but when that same data was framed around a device issue such as gun control those
who scored highest in numeracy those who were the best at math and Logic exhibited the greatest bias this isn't an isolated finding in study after study researchers have uncovered a disturbing Trend the more intelligent someone is the better they are at rationalizing their beliefs this doesn't mean they are more rational it means they're more skilled at crafting complex justifications for what they already want to believe studies conducted by stanovich at l in 2012 12 and Joselyn and Haider Marley in 2014 confirmed this over and over the brighter the mind the deeper the bias to truly
understand this phenomenon we need to rethink what intelligence really is intelligence in its purest form is the ability to achieve goals intelligence alone doesn't determine what those goals are in other words someone can be brilliant but if their goal is self-preservation or social status rather than truth their intellig will be warped to serve those ends human intelligence didn't evolve to pursue truth it evolved to help us survive and survival often means social acceptance status and belonging we are at our core tribal creatures hardwired to prioritize our position in the group this is where delusion Creeps
in where intelligent people start believing things that are not just wrong but dangerously wrong because those beliefs Elevate their status within their Social Circles Dan Kahan called this identity protective cognition IPC and it's a mental mechanism that lets people bind their intelligence to their social and evolutionary instincts IPC allows smart people to deceive themselves using their Brilliance not to find truth but to justify irrational beliefs that benefit them in some way whether it's boosting their status or protecting their ego for centuries Elite institutions like Oxford and Harvard have been churning out generations of Master Debaters
people trained not to discern truth but to win argument arents these so-called intellectual Elites often end up in positions of power politics media Academia entertainment and use their rhetorical skills to push ideas that are fashionable but fundamentally flawed this creates a dangerous feedback loop the more intelligent and articulate someone is the better they are at defending their beliefs no matter how absurd those beliefs might be and in a world where social media amplifies the loudest voices these articulate Defenders of delusion can quickly gain a following spreading their false ideas far and wide and don't think
for a second that this doesn't apply to you it applies to everyone especially those of us who consider ourselves intellectually Superior you're not immune in fact if you're smart you're more at risk intelligent people are better at convincing themselves of things they want to believe whether it's political ideologies social theories or even Health beliefs so how do you protect yourself from falling into this trap it's not enough to be aware of cognitive biases or logical fallacies in fact learning about these things can make you even more prone to delusions if you're not careful why because
you'll start applying that knowledge selectively using it to point out the flaws in other people's thinking while remaining blind to your own the Real Enemy here isn't ignorance or even stupidity it's ego we all have a deep need to feel smart to feel right and to be validated by our peers and that need can twist even the sharpest Minds into knots convincing them of things that are patently false simply because it feels good to believe them to break free of this cycle you need two things curiosity and humility curiosity will drive you to seek out
the truth even when it's uncomfortable or inconvenient and humility will remind you that you don't have all the answers that no matter how smart you are you can still be wrong this is your wakeup call if you consider yourself intelligent then you owe it to yourself and to society not to fall victim to the seductive pull of delusion be vigilant question your beliefs challenge your assumptions don't let your intelligence become a tool for self-deception remember the greatest Minds in history weren't those who clung to fashionable ideas or sought social approval they were the ones who
dared to question everything even their own beliefs they were the ones who pursued truth no matter where it led them are you brave enough to do the same or will you let your intelligence become your greatest weakness trapping you in a web of comfortable delusions the choice is yours Choose Wisely like And subscribe for more thought-provoking content that challenges your assumptions and pushes you to think critically about the world around you
