Urinating a lot or too often can be dangerous. How do we know if it is a serious illness or caused by something harmless? What diseases can cause you to urinate too much or get up many times to urinate at night?
Attention! This may be a sign that something is wrong with your body. Hello everyone.
I am Dr Veller and my specialty is Nephrology. That is, prevent and treat kidney diseases. And if you are suffering from this and do not know the cause, this is your video.
I'm going to tell you when you should worry and when this can really be something more serious. And also how to improve these symptoms naturally. But first let me tell you that you are not alone, 30% of men and 40% of women suffer from this problem at some point in their life.
And the vast majority of the time it is something benign, that is, it is something harmless. Look, this is the urinary tract and unlike what many think, the problem is often not there. Urination is a process that involves many systems, not just the kidney and the bladder.
Now, how many times do we normally urinate per day? It is considered normal in adults from 5 to 7 times per day. At night, it is normal not to get up.
But 30% of adults can urinate once at night. After the age of 70, the normal can reach up to twice a night. So if you urinate eight or more times a day or get up more than once or twice a night depending on your age, something is going on and we need to investigate.
I'll tell you right away. And regarding the amount, the normal is considered up to three liters per day or 40 milliliters per kilo. That is, if you have 70 kilos up to 2800 milliliters per day.
But this is highly variable. It depends on the amount of water we drink and the type and amount of food we eat . But in general, when it exceeds this volume, it is considered excess urine.
What doctors call "polyuria". Now these numbers are highly variable. What if we should consider as abnormal or that something is really happening and we should seek medical attention, is when the amount of urine you produce alters your quality of life.
Interrupts your sleep Is affecting your routine Interrupts your social activities OR causes you any kind of discomfort. This should be the first warning sign to seek medical attention. Let us now see the main causes of urinating a lot.
And here the most frequent is to drink a lot of liquid. And how much is a lot of liquid? Well, in general, if you are drinking more than 40 milliliters per kilo of liquids, this could be the cause of your urinating so much.
Or if you are drinking, for example, liquids after 8-9 at night. But there are times when it is not about the amount of liquid, but about the type itself. For example, drinks with a diuretic effect, such as caffeinated coffee, mate, some types of tea, alcoholic beverages.
All of them stimulate diuresis. It makes us order more. Like many types of food, people who eat a lot of chocolate or eat a plant-rich diet, many leafy greens have a tendency to urinate more.
On the other hand, anxiety, stress, the state of being always alert. Nerves can make us urinate a little more transiently. And one thing that we do not take into account out there is constipation, constipation.
Not having a bowel movement for more than three days causes an increase in pressure within our pelvis and this makes it harder for the bladder to fill, having to empty more frequently. But up to this point, all the houses that I mentioned to you are harmless, innocent, and by modifying our lifestyle, our habits, the problem is generally solved. The problem is when it comes to some disease that causes you to urinate more frequently.
For example, and here you have to differentiate several things. If your problem is that you go to the bathroom very often, very often and you urinate a little and on top of that you are left with the sensation of wanting to continue urinating or a burning sensation, of burning when urinating, you may have a urinary infection. This is very common mainly in women.
And here the problem is not the increase in the amount of urine, but the increase in frequency itself. You go to the bathroom many times and on top of that you have that feeling of comfort as an urgency to continue urinating. Now exactly these same symptoms are not always about a urinary tract infection.
It can be, for example, kidney or bladder stones. Or some gynecological problem, such as a vaginal infection or some alteration of the uterus or vaginal atrophy that occurs in menopause. In these cases, in addition to having the sensation of urinating more frequently, you have gynecological symptoms.
Even they tend to get worse if you get treated for a UTI when you don't have one . Sexually transmitted infections also cause these symptoms. Now.
Attention men, especially if you are over 50 years old, because these same symptoms of urinating more frequently can be caused by an increase in the size of the prostate. A pathology called benign prostatic hypertrophy. In some other cases it can even be caused by prostate cancer, mainly in older patients, over 65, 70 years.
In these cases it is common to urinate more frequently, mainly at night. We get up more than once or twice to urinate. There are techniques to help alleviate these symptoms, I'm going to tell you about it, but these people, in addition to having this problem of urinating more frequently, have to exert more force to urinate and the stream of urine comes out finer, comes out weaker .
Many times he does not reach the toilet having to sit down to urinate. In other cases, the problem is not here. It may be in the intestine.
For example, a person with a constipation or who has diverticulitis. An inflammation of the intestine can make you urinate more often. Even appendicitis could cause this.
But watch out for one thing. Many times it is a more serious disease, such as a tumor or pelvic cancer. Like a tumor of the uterus, bladder or even intestine.
In these cases you may have other symptoms such as pain in the belly. Sensation of heaviness, weight loss without a reason that justifies it. We can also have blood in the urine.
We have to think about a tumor or cancer if you are over 50 or 60 years old and especially if you smoke. So far I have talked about the diseases that cause an increase in the frequency of urination. But there are other situations where the amount of urine we produce per day increases, that is, more than three liters per day or more than 40 milliliters per kilo.
And here, as a curiosity I tell you, there is a psychiatric pathology called "potomania", where the person consumes more than ten liters of water per day, which is obviously going to produce more urine. But many times this problem occurs without us taking an excess of water. This can happen, for example, in diabetes, when it is not controlled or when it is not yet diagnosed.
That is, diabetes can present itself in this way when we have very high blood glucose levels above 200 mg/dl. In these conditions, the sugar that is eliminated by the kidneys carries water with it and causes you to urinate excessively. In these cases, the person with diabetes, in addition to having polyuria, also has polydipsia, that is, a lot of thirst, and polyphagia, that is, a lot of hunger.
These are the famous “three Ps” of uncompensated diabetes. Now notice how interesting this is. There are other types of diabetes and I am not referring to type one and type two diabetes mellitus, but to diabetes insipidus.
Another type of problem in which it has nothing to do with insulin, but with another hormone called anti diuretic hormone. In these cases, the problem may be in the brain or the kidney, but the point is that it makes us urinate much more than three liters per day. Now.
Why do we urinate a lot at night? And this problem is called “nocturia”. Most of us can go six or seven hours without getting up or only get up once a night to urinate.
And this is because at night a greater amount of a hormone called anti-diuretic is released, which makes us urinate less and as we age, as I told you before, in those over 65 or 70 years of age we can get up up to twice a night. Many times avoiding drinking fluids in excess or after eight or 9 at night solves the problem of nocturia. Or avoid drinking beverages with a diuretic effect.
But in other cases, mainly in men, nocturia can be an indication of prostate problems. As I told you before, now many times the problem is not in the urinary tract, but in another organ, in another system. Some diseases cause us to retain a lot of fluids during the day, mainly our legs.
For example, chronic venous insufficiency, varicose veins, circulation problems. This means that during the day we form edema in our legs, fluid retention and at night when we go to bed, these fluids are absorbed and redistributed. They make them pass through the kidney again and at night we urinate excessively.
There are ways to avoid this. I'll tell you soon. But this problem of fluid retention during the day can also indicate heart problems.
Uncontrolled arterial hypertension, heart failure. And in the latter case, in addition to urinating more frequently, the person may have shortness of breath to walk, to climb the stairs, shortness of breath when lying down in bed, they begin to need to sleep with several pillows sitting up or wake up at night with a feeling of suffocation that is suffocating. In other cases, the problem of nocturia can be chronic kidney failure, liver problems.
The diabetes insipidus itself that I told you about earlier can cause nocturia. Even other very common situations that we often do not think about, such as obstructive sleep apnea, gastroesophageal reflux and obesity itself can make us urinate more often or urinate more at night. Did you know that there are foods that can make us order more?
They are all those that contain a large amount of liquid inside or that in themselves have some diuretic effect, such as watermelon, melon, celery, lemon. The chocolate. Caffeinated coffee.
Asparagus, beets, green leafy vegetables. People with a tendency to have a diet rich in plants tend to urinate more. Now, this is highly variable.
It doesn't happen with all people. If you are one of those people who are more sensitive to these foods, the recommendation is not to eat them at night, especially after 8 at night, so you don't have to get up so much to urinate when you go to bed. But hey, now I want to tell you the warning signs when you should seek medical attention immediately.
First, if the cause of urinating a lot or more frequently is not obvious, that is, you are not consuming a lot of fluids, you are not drinking anything or eating anything with a diuretic effect. You're not drinking much fluid after 8-9 at night. In that case, seek medical attention.
If you have other associated symptoms such as burning, pain when urinating or if you have to do a lot of force, or if the urine stream is weaker, finer. If you have changes in the color of the urine, mainly blood in the urine or darker urine such as black tea or red. If you have any discharge from your urethra, this is not normal.
If you suspect that you may have diabetes. If you have fever, malaise, sweating, pain in the lumbar region or in the suprapubic region or in the region of the abdomen. This may indicate a slightly more serious condition, a kidney infection called pyelonephritis.
If you have dizziness or low blood pressure, this may indicate that you are becoming dehydrated from urinating so much, you should seek medical attention. If you have weakness in your legs or urinary incontinence, which is not the same as urinating more often or more, but urine leaks out, you can't hold it in your bladder. This may indicate a problem with the spinal cord or a problem with the pelvic muscles.
Yes. You are losing weight for no apparent reason, you should be concerned and seek medical attention. Or if you have any change in your body, something that is not normal.
If it's interrupting your quality of life, interrupting your sleep, interrupting your social activities. Now I want to give you some tips to avoid urinating much more frequently, especially at night. First of all, avoid excess fluids.
Avoid drinking liquids after eight or 9 at night. Avoid eating foods or drinks with a diuretic effect in the late afternoon or at night. If you have circulation problems and fluid retention, it is suggested to lift your legs as many times as you can during the day to improve circulation or wear elastic stockings.
Those that are up to the knee and that squeeze a little. This also helps to improve the function of the veins, to avoid venous insufficiency and improve circulation a little. Reduce sodium intake.
We have a specific video explaining all this perfectly. Now a little exercise you can do at night to avoid getting up so many times to urinate is to empty your bladder twice before going to bed. How do you do this?
Well, you sit down to pee even if you're a man. You empty your bladder completely once. After this, do not get up from the toilet.
Lean forward a bit. Wait 30 seconds and strain to empty your bladder again. With this, by emptying your bladder twice, you can decrease a little the frequency with which you get up at night to urinate.
Regarding the treatment to stop urinating excessively or at night, everything will depend on the cause. Treating diabetes improves the problem. Treating the urinary infection with antibiotics also solves the problem.
Many times the problem is solved with an intravaginal estrogen cream. This helps improve atrophy, the feeling of dryness in women, especially after the age of 50. If you have weakness or incontinence problems, there are some exercises for the pelvic muscles.
It all depends on the type of problem you have. Many times we have to resort to medications to relax the muscles of the bladder in cases of overactive bladder, for example. But the most important thing is that you always consult your doctor.
Mainly if they have the warning signs that I told you about. Now something very important. Leave me your comment.
