The entire Soviet Union was talking about Anya and Tanya Korkin - the first separated Siamese twins. The girls were born in 1990. The doctors were upset when they saw that the children were different from the others.
The young mother burst into tears when they brought her daughters to her. It was difficult for a woman to come to terms with the fact that she had Siamese twins. Looking at Anya and Tanya now, it’s hard to even imagine that they were once different from ordinary children.
The doctors did a good job when they performed the operation to separate the twins. A woman who gave birth to twins learned about the problem during an ultrasound. The doctors informed her that the children had one stomach for two.
Then there were several months left before the birth, and Vera could not decide to terminate the pregnancy. Her husband did not take the news well. He insisted on getting rid of the children, but the woman was against it.
She had waited too long for her daughters to now lose them. When the babies were born, the father came to the maternity hospital. He hoped that the doctors were wrong.
When he saw the Siamese twins, he was very upset. The husband threw Vera a bouquet of flowers and left her life forever. It was difficult for a woman to raise special children.
She wanted Anya and Tanya to be no different from other girls. Vera was supported by surgeon Lev Novokreshchenov. It was he who decided that the girls needed to be operated on in Chelyabinsk.
All Moscow clinics did not agree to perform the difficult operation, which was rarely practiced at that time. In the USSR they tried to separate children before. All operations ended unsuccessfully, so Vera took a lot of risks.
Lev Novokreshchenov not only wanted to separate the twins. He firmly said that both girls must survive. He did not agree to other options.
Doctors spent a long time preparing for the operation. It took them about a month to gather their strength. The surgery took place on May 17, 1990 .
It was this day that became the second birth for the girls. Vera raised the children herself. The girls' father wanted to return to the family after learning about the successful operation.
At the same time, the woman could not forgive him, because the man disappeared just when she needed support. Life was difficult for the family. I had to starve and save for many years to buy a TV and tape recorder.
The city administration allocated a two-room apartment to the family, because Vera and her daughters lived in an old communal apartment. Still, they managed to get through this difficult period. The girls have grown up, and now it is difficult to even imagine that they were once Siamese twins.
Girls under 14 years of age underwent medical examinations from time to time. The doctors wanted to make sure the children were okay. The results were positive and no significant health problems were observed.
Until the age of 10, Anya and Tanya did not even think that they were Siamese twins. At school, girls were often bullied because the children believed that they had a lot of money. Peers were jealous of the twins and believed that they did not need anything.
In fact, the whole family lived on Vera’s modest salary. The girls did not have disabilities, so they were not paid subsidies. Anya has become a bright girl who loves to wear feminine clothes.
She often wears white hair and feels like an attractive girl. Tanya is completely different in character. She likes sporty clothing and short haircuts.
The girl feels confident in such an image and does not worry about the fact that she is not at all like her sister. Women work at a fish factory and try to achieve everything in life on their own. Tanya considers herself a purposeful and strong person.
She believes that she can make her way in life. Anya is softer and more pliable in character. She relies a lot on her sister.
Now the girls are 29 years old and have not yet gotten married. The twins admit that they have fans. Girls are in no hurry to get married because they need build a career first.
Anya and Tanya have no children. While girls do not strive to experience motherhood. Girls do not experience health problems.
The only thing that reminds them of the operation is the scars on their abdomen in the navel area. The famous doctor Lev Novokreshchenov died in 2016. He lived for 89 years and during this time managed to help many people.
A memorial plaque dedicated to the great surgeon was unveiled in Chelyabinsk. People decided to perpetuate the memory of him and his achievements. Anya and Tanya were at the opening together with their mother.
They are grateful to the great doctor for helping them in childhood. If it were not for Leo, the girls would not be able to live a full life. The great man was not afraid to take risks and carry out a difficult operation.
