Welcome everyone if you can hear me okay if you can see the screen send a hi in the chat box and then we will begin welcome Marcus welcome Mani welcome Seine handy great to see you janani cavine adti ba Chia Aza very good rusher ban Cam and Mariam great to have you here as well Louie very good Troy says hello good afternoon and I would Agree perfect so I'm just going to pause the chat box for one second and we are going to do a quick introduction to what we're covering today someone said do I
do every Tuesday class I run all of the Tuesday classes asides from when we are doing maths because unfortunately maths is not my specialty Charles who a lot of you probably would have met by now is a lot better at math than me and his best place to take that hey m as well so basically today's focus of course the Goal of this program overall is to get you into your dream selective high school so what I thought I'd do right at the start of today's lesson just because there's something a little bit different that's
happened this week which is they've actually opened applications for the selective schools I'd quickly remind us of course what our goal is what school are we all applying for would love to hear in the chat so maybe just send in the chat box what school are you Applying for is it melin high is it mcro is it nosel very good quite a lot of melin highs some mcrs some Noles a lot of different options which is good perfect so some people are saying literally any school which is true they're all really good personally as a
lot of you probably know I went to Melbourne High I really liked Melbourne High we actually had quite a few people who have just started at these schools this year after being in our program last year and people are enjoying it so far people from Melbourne High are saying they like they're liking being near the city southa it's in um Melvin Heights in southa so it's right near the city there's a lot of shops nearby there's libraries nearby I remember after school you off and go to the library do some study have some food With
friends which was something that I liked alongside the school itself mcrob same thing really close to City a lot of people are liking mcrob so far same with the other schools and so they're all really good options the reason I bring that up is just because they have opened applications for the year and so if we go to this website here you can see that they have opened applications for this year's exam so what I'm going to do is I'm just going to send it into the chat Box um so everyone is able to access
this we'll send everyone an email as well explaining how this works but basically you want to register for the exam before 2nd of May so that's the that's the time limit there um basically the exam is going to be held on 14th of June which means we have just under four months left which is still a good amount of time to prepare but we do really want to maximize every single week so that we're ready before exam day we're Getting the scores we need um you'll get your outcomes in September and so yeah that's essentially
when you're going to get in one thing it does here as well say is this is the last day to change your preferences so what I'd recommend at the moment there's still four months left until the exam which I know is starting to feel a little bit more stressful but aim for the best school you can get into so if you really want to get into mcrob and It's always been your dream even if you think it might be hard if it might be difficult aim for that for now same thing if you really want
to get into Nole or Susan or melbour high aim for whatever is your first preference as your first preference for now as we get closer to the exam we're going to be sitting 10 mock exams between now and the exam and as you do a few mock exams we'll be able to give you a bit of guidance around how you're going if You're progressing fast enough which schools are going to be easier for you to get into and so that's something to look forward to that we will be able to help you with but at
this point there's no point narrowing it down you may as well just go for any school that you want no matter how hard you think it will be now that kind of brings us to the point which is between now and the exam everyone here will have access to 10 full mock exams the first one of These is going to be released tomorrow these ones are a bit different to any other mock exams you've done before because they're very closely mimicked on last year's exam even more than the other exams that we had before um
which means they'll line up really well with what we're doing in class and the difficulty is going to be very similar to the real thing the only thing I will say about that is the difficulty of some sections on the exam last year was Pretty tough maybe let's just hear in the chat how have people been founding finding the mass questions that we've been releasing for homework have they been easy have they been hard how people been finding the mass ones some people are saying tough some people are saying okay people are saying generally hard
some people are saying quantitatives more tough now if you're find them easy I'm impressed because I personally find them difficult even Now and yes this is the same for year 10 job you you get to all the same things but math last year on the exam was super hard like I know a lot of people who they left 30 40% of the exam questions blank and they still did incredibly well and they still got into these schools and they did really well in maths and so maths and quantitative last year was particularly hard which is
one key thing to think about when you're sitting these mock exams I wouldn't worry too much About what your percentage is because what you're going to notice some exams you'll get 60% other exams you'll get 80% some exams you might get 95% but really doesn't matter the percentage it's about how you do compared to everyone else and so with all the exams you sit in the program we show you what the average is we'll show you what it takes to be in the top 10% top 20% within our program so you can see okay was
this a hard exam where 60% was good Or was this an easier exam where you had to get 90% to be really good so that's one thing to consider um otherwise of course how the program works a few people were just asking before class for a bit of clarification so there's really three things we do every week we've got this tring class the start of the week There's homework and feedback throughout the week increasingly there will be mock exams coming a lot between now and the exam because it's getting to the point Where you want
to get used to sitting these mock exams but you also want to get used to doing it in the time limit as well so maybe this just here in the chat box has anyone ever sat a full mock exam for three hours all in one go maybe that's just here has anyone ever sat the full exam all in one go before some people have which is good Cam said he did last year which is good okay V van is vanan is on on the ball There so some people are saying yes some people are saying
no this is something we want to do increasingly between now and the exam we want to be sitting the exam all as a chunk the reason for that is it unfortunately makes it a lot more difficult if you just sit down in your room and do 30 minutes of math questions 30 minutes a math exam it's not too hard like you've just got 30 minutes you can stay focused you can get them done but if you have to do that for all sections On the exam you have to do writing right at the end imagine
what writing at the end of the exam does to most people's writing it makes it a lot lower than it normally would be and so that's something we're going to be practicing a lot now we've got a good question from Jay so maybe you go to them um hi Charlie so um my question was so like what I've done to like get like myself ahead in the exam was um out of the seven days there's you um split like Like into six subjects and then and then the high performance strategies and the mock exam so
what I've done is every day I do one subject and I've really like I watched all your videos and like written every note or like documents that I think are like important from it and then so do you think that's good like how I like revise the strategies practice it and like probably like use flashcards do you think that would like help me throughout The exam and like doing like mock exams like twice not every two weeks like alterntive week I think that's perfect I think exactly what you're doing there J is exactly what you
want to be doing that's a type of thing that if you do your chance of success are extremely high so for context last year if you just kind of do the minimum expectations every single week you do still have a reasonable chance of getting in but the people who are hungry and they think Okay how can I maximize my time how can I maximize every day what can I do to maximize my preparation and they do that like what Jay's doing they're the ones who 90 95% of them get in because they they don't leave
any stone unturned really so that's definitely a good hint there um I'll go through a few tips as to what I recommend in a second but I'll go to Mana now um do you know like on the day of the test like what like exams like which Order they're going to be and like the schedule for it yeah so on the ACA website I'll see if I've still got it up it does have the order here so let's just have a quick check of that so on exam day it says yeah so this is the
order so it's reading first then maths then verbal then quantitative then writing at the end so yeah writing at the end the the good thing about that is everyone is so tired By the time they get to the writing section of the exam you've already done a two and a half hour exam and so the quality of writing is generally for most people very poor and that's why I know in this program we really drill you on structure structure structure and it might seem like we're we're just doing the same thing and we're we're being
quite harsh with our feedback but it means when you are tired just right with structure if you just don't have heaps Of punctuation spelling grammar errors immediately going to be for that Reon thank you all good we'll go to Hugo and then we'll do AR and then we'll keep going um I was just wondering what sort of scores we should be getting at the moment for the homework so what I would say is the homework recently has been quite tough it's been really quite difficult um if you're getting realistically it doesn't Actually really matter if
you're getting above 50% um that suggests like you're well on track if you're getting I know there's some people who are getting sort of 80 90% already if that's the case you're you're looking really quite good um but it's it's pretty tough so anything over 50% is is pretty strong um arav um so will we get like any breaks for like lunch or snack or no breaks at all yeah so the way the breaks work is so you've got these first two sections Reading and maths um so that's about an hour of study you'll then
have a short break this 20 minute break here you do get let out of your seat so you get to kind of go off in essentially they have like a little room and they Jam everyone in there and you can have like a little glass of water and some snack um for 20 minutes and then you'll have another hour this short minute five minute break is not like much of a break you essentially just sit in your seat and You can kind of have a glass of water or anything um and then there's writing so
this is the main break maybe let's just do one more question from isar so so what would you say is a good consistent score to get for writing for uh for the weekly feedback so what I would say is if you're consistently getting around 35 like sometimes a little bit higher sometimes a little bit lower I would say you're looking really Really good at this point all right and what would you say uh the more 28 29s so I'd say that that's that suggests you're pretty much on track and if you keep improving at the
rate you're improving you'll probably be at about 37 to 38 by the exam maybe 40 um which is pretty good like you're going to be in the top 10 15% all right thank you all good um let's go to let's do one more question and then we'll then we'll take a pause I'll just go to Troy um you know how it's uh math after reading is it like um immediately right after or is there like a minute or something to like start so unfortunately it's basically right away so what they normally do is they'll hand
out the reading and maths books at the same time so imagine that you have two little like booklets like this which are the exam that put both of them here and then you would essentially do reading first and then that would say reading away and Then you would open maths out um so in between here there's probably like a a minute break or so as they take out the papers but not very much at all and so what we might do is we might jump back and just get get ourselves into the lesson and then
we will take some questions throughout the lesson from there but today's focus is reading reading was a section where people found it okay on last year's exam um it probably was one where my prediction is You would need would have needed around maybe even 90% to be in the top 10% so it was a bit different to other sections because a section like maths 50 60% was probably pretty good reading you needed to be more precise um and so as you're doing reading mock exams our reading mock exams I would really aim to be getting
around 90% because that's kind of how we've designed them to be where you probably want to be at that level now I'll just Quickly go to's question okay so um what if um in like you're reading homework um you get like really really random um uh like like results after like it it's not it's not like I get like below 50 I get usually like um um like 70 to 100 um but like how do you like how do you fix that like how do you make sure that it's like fixed yeah so probably what
I'd say is with the homework I'd Kind of treat the homework as just a training drill because sometimes it's super hard sometimes it's easier your scores will fluctuate because sometimes reading for example would be really hard and a good score would be 70% and other weeks it will be super easy and 90% is required with the mock exams that's the thing where you probably want to try and be more consistent so what I'd say is generally I wouldn't worry too much about the homework do your best revise It very carefully but we're get that first
mock exam that we're going to sit in these final four months that's going to be coming out this week and people will be sitting this week next that's the one I'd kind of use as your measurement of how you're going and try and stay consistent from there because homework it's like it's different difficulties but mock exams will be pretty consistent now in terms of what we're actually covering today we're Doing reading and we're going to be looking at some Advanced comprehension strategies so we're going to kind of kind of building on what CH said how
do you get really good at reading comprehension is it to test ourselves on passages that are sort of similar to the exam or a little bit easier or is it to test ourselves on really difficult passages that are probably harder than the real exam well that's probably the best approach and so What we're going to be doing in today's lesson is going through some very difficult passages passages that are if they came up on the exam most people would really struggle with because if we get good at comprehending these and we'll work through it together
so they'll be pretty manageable if you can build the skill on these passages for the ones on the exam if they're the same difficulty you're going to have a huge Advantage because everyone else will be Struggling and you'll find it easy but if it's easier you're going to be much faster than other people because if you think about how do you become faster at understanding something at comprehending something the easiest way is really to practice on hard passages and when you go back to easier ones you'll fly through it and it'll just all make sense
immediately and so that's going to be the focus for today now there's a few questions coming in the chat which I'll Will get to in just a moment in terms of the reading section of the exam you've got 35 questions in 35 minutes you've got one minute per question and really what that means is it's not too bad like time pressure for reading most people don't find it too difficult it's just okay it's not crazy it's not easy it's it's just average there is a lot of different types of questions in reading comprehension we've spoken
about this a little bit before but there's cartoons There's graphs there's charts there's passages there's quotes there's statements there's a lot of different types of questions today we're going to be mainly focused on passage interpretation which it is still the main type of question on the exam and so that's going to be our Focus now what we're going to do is I'm going to run through a few tips for advanced comprehension then we're going to read some difficult passages together break Them down understand them answer some questions on them and then just before we go
into that as well just because there is a buch of questions in the chat I'm going to zoom through them answer them all and then we can focus on reading with no sort of questions generally about how the exam works because I know just because they did release everything about the exam this week it's natural to have a lot of questions about what exam they like when Are we going to do mock exams and so on so there's a few people asking about are we doing iners mock exams we're going to do two iners mock
exams in the final 6 weeks before the exam these are kind of like the real those two are like the final test so ideally before that you're pretty confident and then those final two are really just the final test to get used to that inperson experience now you apply for Selective high schools when You're in year eight if you're looking to get in for year eight nine or year n if you're looking to get in for year 10 ask someone um some people are asking about will the old mock exams we have still be available
so they will be still be available um and and let's have a look some people are asking about what scores you need on the exam basically you just want to be in the top 10% for as many sections as you can ideally like top 10% for three Sections top 20% for two of them and final question is so some people are asking about sort of little tips and tricks for reading which we'll get through throughout this so I'm just going to jump into the lesson so we can make sure we cover reading as well although
I do think it is valuable going into sort of the strategy of the exam and how everything's going to work there as well now with reading The biggest thing is because you have one minute per question it's not an exam now it used to be like this but it's not really now where it's about just quickly scanning easy passages and picking out the answer really quickly a lot of the passages a lot of the poems a lot of the things you're going to have to interpret on this exam will be fairly difficult they're probably not
at the standard of your year level they're probably at a year n standard or a year 10 standard And so they are quite challenging even for me even when I show them to the other tutors we often think these are not that easy to understand most people would find these quite tough and so that's why the key skill that you want to develop is being able to understand the meaning of the passage so like it says here for advanced passages of text top students they don't just quickly read it as fast as they possibly can
and not understand anything about what's Happening they initially just think I want to just understand what's happening here because the truth is like it says here with step two if you understand exactly what the passage is what the poem is what the cartoon is saying you're going to be able to answer any question because the questions are not that difficult at all once you understand what the main idea is what the main point is and so we're going to be testing that to the extreme today on Some difficult passages we'll see we'll see how people
find them maybe you'll find them okay but the key thing we're going to focus on is understanding what's it really about what's the main idea because once we understand that that's what then allows us to answer any possible question they can attack from any angle we've always got it covered if we know the main idea and so that kind of comes into what we're going to do in today's lesson Which is we're going to read the passages paragraph by paragraph and focus on answering two key questions which is what's the purpose of this paragraph and
what's the main idea or ideas of this paragraph we're going to just jump into part one and then we'll sort of do a few questions as we go or passage one this here is the first paragraph of the passage so the reason why we're going to read these these these little extracts passage by passage Is because if you think about it imagine you're reading something and that's three passages three paragraphs long and if you don't understand exactly what's in the first paragraph before you move on to the second one you're going to just waste your
time reading the second and the third paragraphs because it's not going to make sense you're building on weak foundations and so let's go through this one it's fairly difficult does anyone Want to have a go reading this out anyone want to read this out maybe AR yep I'll let you unmute As Natural Selection acts solely by accumulating slight successive favorable variations it can produce no great or sudden modification it can act only by very short and slow steps hence the cannon of neura nonf faet salum which every fresh addition to our knowledge tends to confirm
Is on this Theory simply intelligible we can plainly see why nature is pro uh prod prodigal prodig prodigal in variety through NAD in Innovation but why this should be a law of nature if species has been independently independently created no man can explain perfect so very well read and it was fairly difficult I would say the passage there's a bit of vocab in there it's a little bit more difficult what we might Do is we're going to spend two minutes just answering these two reflection questions two minutes asking answering these reflection questions so I'm going
to open up the chat box now so you can all message me and just send in the chat what's the purpose of this paragraph why is it here what it's what's it trying to teach us and what is the main idea of it these things might be very similar they might be the same thing they might be different have a think about it what's The main purpose of this paragraph and what's the main idea so s me a message with your answer once you're done we've got some good good stuff here already which is good
those of you who send questions earlier I'm just answering them in the chat okay so G says we can plainly see why nature is prig variety okay so AAR says how the process of natural selection Works interesting Rind do very good as well Yan Juan Juan's on the ball mana's got a good question which we'll get to M do very good me do is explain that very simply and clearly same with Iris that's okay makka okay so what we might do is we might start going through a few interpretations here so some people are asking
what's the difference between the Main purpose and the main idea the main purpose is when the author sat down at their desk and they wrote this why did they do it why did they even bother writing this in the first place and so the purpose is probably to educate us about something to educate us about whatever's in this paragraph and that probably what they're trying to educate us on is the main idea the main idea is just what it's mainly talking about main idea what's it mainly talking about is The simplest way to think about
it now does anyone want to raise their hand and explain what they think the main idea is anyone to explain what the main idea is keep your hand up if if that's you if you want to ask a different question maybe put it down for the time being so maybe let's go to DAR um I feel like it's a a process of like trying to cycle of Life maybe like a process of Y Just I would agree so it is definitely quite linked to the idea of the ccle of life and how things change over
time maybe do you have a thought um it's basically like um the main idea of like a passage agree yeah so I do agree with that main idea of the passage is very true how about um maybe maybe Leo uh do you want the main idea for this passage right um yeah we can go to That now what do you think the main idea of this I think the main idea for this passage is about natural selection obviously but natural selection is like the modif it a sudden modification so and then also talks about like
nature so it's probably like the change or evolution of Nature and then they're also talking about how it's like a theory that's like really intelligible and like how people don't really understand it or know can truly Explain this process but it's just like how the plants can evolve and change through a long period of time so it's not like a sudden change it takes time very true so because I was going what I was going to say at the start did you say was like did you say it was a sudden modification or or not
a sudden modification not a sudden modification yeah exactly right so Le has got on the ball there um maybe let's just hear one more person just out of interest to see Some differences so let's hear maybe from i''s say a rule um it's kind of saying nature only changes really slowly because natural selection like favors small modifications yeah and that's why it's slowly changing exactly right so in this case like a lot of you have identified what you want to initially do when you're trying to interpret one of these tricky passages is just figure out
what What it's what's the main even thing in the first place which this is really all about natural selection now what is natural selection natural selection is the idea that nature changes in small slight tweaks over time rather than any large sudden or drastic changes so some people are saying in the chat they don't know what's happening they don't understand this all this paragraph is about is it's just about natural selection and it's About how nature changes in small slight tweaks over time rather than any a large sudden or drastic change so for example if
you think about it an an animal if they're living in a cold environment and they need more warmth maybe through natural selection animals that naturally grow thicker wool will last longer they'll live longer they'll have more Offspring and that animal will over time over the course of hundreds and hundreds of years there'll be more Of those animals with big woolly woolly skins because they're better equipped to survive in that environment that doesn't happen in one year it takes hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of years for that change to occur and that's the whole idea of
natural selection and so even though this paragraph has got heaps of difficult vocab that is hard that makes it quite difficult to know just this first sentence here is the main thing natural selection it's small slight Successive small changes rather than a big change over time now this thing here the Canon of naturon fum which every fresh addition to our knowledge tends to confirm is on this Theory simply intelligible which is kind of just backing up this thing here say here we can plainly see why nature is predal in variety um and so what that
essentially means is this sentence here is saying we can see why nature is so different in variety because all the Different species they make small little changes up over time now what I'm going to say is we're going to have a look at the second paragraph now if all you took away from this first paragraph is natural selection is small changes in nature over time rather than any big changes that's fine that is going to allow you to answer these questions correctly so some people are saying if a question comes like this up On the
exam and it mentions something and we don't know what it is what should we do the key thing is just figure out something simple about it you don't have to understand every single last sentence you don't have to understand every last word for example pred dig there's a lot of other difficult words here as well you don't have to understand what they all mean we just need to understand the main point overall and that's going to allow us to answer most of these Questions correctly with these difficult passages now if you don't know how to
understand the text properly what do you do some people are saying that you just want to focus on one small little thing understand that and then move on if you practice I guarantee if you read hundred of these passages imagine if between now and the exam you read a 100 of these tricky passages which we will through the homework um you'll be good enough is The truth so let's have a go at this next paragraph now does anyone want to have a go reading this second paragraph I think someone in the chat said they did
maybe does that person want to raise their hand yep uh is Natural Selections act so so solely by accumulating slight successive favorable variations it can produce no great or sudden modification it can act only by very short and slow steps hence The Canon of natural wa am I oh I'm reading the wrong one good to have a quick recap but feel free to start off with this one if you like many cases are on record showing how complex and unexpected are the checks and relations between organ unque beings which have to struggle together in the
same country I will give only a single instance which though a simple one has interested me in starold sh on the estate of a relation where I had ample means of Investigation There was a large and extremely Barren Health which had never been touched by the head of of bed but several hundreds anchors of exactly similar natural uh nature had been enclosed 25 years previously and planted with Scorch fire the change in the native vegetation of the planted part of the H head was most remarkable more than almost any other I know on England yet
the effect had been produced by the introduction of a single tree peculiar Pulular adapted to withand the soil and climate of the district very good so well read there now the key thing with this one again because a lot of people are saying is this the same difficulty as exam this is super hard I don't know what I'm doing It's Tricky we've just got to keep it simple the reason why we're practicing on these ones is because they are hard they're challenging most people find them Tough but AR says I may this text Charles Darwin
but we just want to think about it in the simplest possible way now let's just quickly break it down so it says many Cas are on record showing blah blah blah that's fine this first sentence here we can largely ignore it doesn't tell us all that much I'll give a single instance which though has a simple interested in me and so what I'm going to do is what I'm I'm going to recommend you maybe largely ignore this first sentence this this sentence here gives you a big clue and then this here is pretty important so
I'm going to give you all two minutes send this time just what's the main idea what's this passage this paragraph mainly about so we're looking at this one here what's that mainly about now a lot of people are saying is this the same difficulty as exam this would be quite difficult on the exam a lot of People would struggle with it the average would be about 30 to 40% if it came up on the exam which is definitely possible and so that's why we're training on it so these are the different makers difference makers if
most people are getting 30 to 40% on these kind of ones if you can get 60 70% then you're going to crush everyone and so that's kind of the goal so send in the chat what's the main idea of this paragraph here and then we will go Through it together Okay so we've got some good answers here now if you're struggling with this passage that's completely okay that's why we're going to work through it together does anyone anyone want to raise their hand and kind of explain what they think this one's about maybe keep your
hand up if you're willing to explain let's go to maybe aach oh whoops maybe V yeah so I thought that the main idea Of this passage was like showing how a small adaptation can change a lot of things perfect so for Van you've done it in a very simple way because if you think about it this first paragraph what's it about it's about how natural selection is really about small little changes over time and here it says I will give only a single instance which is essentially saying I will give you a single example of
natural selection and this whole example here About instaff about the Scotch spur which is a type of plant by the sounds of it is an example of natural selection in action so does anyone want to explain a little bit more around that maybe Jonathan yeah so what I thought it was was the main idea of this paragraph is that One Singular tree over 25 years was able to change the vegetation of the several hundred hundred acres in that Area exactly right so that's a very simple way of putting it Jonathan so what's essentially happening in
this paragraph they're telling us one example of natural selection that one example was Scotch which was one tree which like it says here it was planted on a large and extremely Barren Heath does anyone know what the word Baron means maybe send it in the chat what does baron mean if it's A baren heath it means an empty land dry land it's dry it's empty it's bare there's nothing there it had never been touched by the hand of man which means it was there was nothing much there and it was planted with one single tree
this bar empty land was planted with one single tree and the change in the native vegetation of the planted part of the heath was most remarkable and so essentially what it's saying is there was this Barren dry land They planted one tree there and over the course of 25 years which isn't a isn't a short period of time that's a long period of time which backs up the idea the natural selection it takes time it's slow it's long it had a big impact over the course of that period of time and it went from being
Baron dry not very nice to being remarkable and by by the sounds of it quite nice and so that's really all it was about and so if we really boil this down some people are asking What does natural selection mean if we really boil this down paragraph one it's about what natural selection is natural selection is the idea that nature changes very slowly nature it adapts it changes very slowly through small little tweaks over time for example if if a certain type of tree realizes that if it's really tall it will get more access to
rain then over the course of hundreds and hundreds of hundreds of years that species of tree might slowly become Taller and taller and taller and this here is just giving an example of natural selection and action there this Baron dry land they planted a tree and over the course of a long period of time 25 years that one planting of that tree by a human had a huge impact on the whole area and so that's it that's really all this is about and so that's kind of why these type of really difficult passages we just
want to break it down And make it simple look for the parts that you can find okay because no matter how difficult the passage is I guarantee there's going to be one sentence which you can understand and once you understand that one sentence you can use that to understand a second one and a third one and piece things together you might not understand everything you don't need that to understand everything now what we're going to do now is hopefully you've all been listening you All kind of have figured out what the main idea is we're
going to put put it to the test and we're going to see if we know what the main idea is if we know what this piece was mainly about which hopefully we do now then we can answer any question without even looking at the passage in the real exam what I would recommend is you look at the passage and sorry you read the question first then you look at the passage um but for this one we're just going to have a look at The question without even looking at the passage at all and see if
we can get it correct now Jay has a good explanation for that so let's go to Jay um I just wanted to like explain how I did it so first I realized that in both of these paragraphs and like in most of the par hard paragraphs I read is the first sentence is either like a hit or a miss so either it'll tell you everything about or like the main idea or it'll just tell you nothing so first I go through that and then I I skim read through like the rest of like the paragraph
and whatever Parts I find like these are like examples or like something that's it's like in like important or like telling me something I try to like underline it or something like that and then from there like once I like I kind of just extract that in like information from that and find out what the main idea is like in this one um like in the last one we just did I Realized that just from like reading like the last part of it I realized that the main idea was like how like small changes that
like are varied by Nature can remarkably change something over time perfect that's a very good explanation so thank you to Jay for breaking that down and what I liked about what he said there is that we can be smart with where we look for information because if you think about it if we're looking for the main idea of A passage is it most likely going to be hidden in the tiniest middle of a passage of a paragraph where it's super hard to find is this going to be the main idea here or is the main
idea going to be here probably not because we know when we write essays no says NOP and she's exactly right when we write essays we don't hide the main idea in some small little place it's hard to find we put it in the first sentence we probably recap it in other ones as as well but Often first sentences last sentences really good places to go to look for the main idea so if you're struggling if you have a hard passage look for the first sentences look for the hard sentences look for any sentence you can
understand like personally for me with this paragraph I remember the first time I read it I thought oh dear this one's very difficult but this thing here I'll give you only a single instance I thought okay this means I Will give you an example of something what it is I don't know but then it says here in staffire they seem to plant some sort of tree and the change was remarkable so by that we know okay they planted a tree the change is remarkable given this is about natural selection it probably suggests this has something
to do with natural selection they planted a tree and it led to some sort of slow change over time proving the idea of natural Selection and so yeah using teal so G says can we use the teal method most things use teal and so you can think okay the first sentence is probably a topic sentence there's probably a bit of explanation in the middle there's probably a linking conclusion sentence at the end you can use that to your advantage that's definitely good tip there from G now we've got a question now you'll notice the passage
is gone because we should understand it we've Spoken about it we've heard different opinions we know what this passage is about and what we would normally do in the exam is look at the question first get a bit of an idea gives us some hints about what the passages about as well and then we'll try and understand the passage in this case we've read the passage we know what it means have a got answering this question send your answer into the chat box when you think you know what it Is e very good so we've
got some people saying C some people saying B we got different answers here okay so we'll pause the chat box for a second now most people have gone with either a C or D the key thing is key thing is here that most of the time the difference between the correct option and the second corre correct option is something very small and so When you're looking to distinguish between different options I would ask yourself what's one tiny thing in one of these options that makes it incorrect this one here what does Dar imply about natural
the nature of evolutionary change which is kind of just like natural selection does imply that it's easy to understand and measure not really I don't think he really did that I don't think did he imply that it occurs through small Sudden modifications sudden what do people think maybe s in the chat was it sudden modifications it was small was it sudden those of you who are with a was it sudden modifications people are saying no no I'd agreee with you there as AR and Jonathan's got the little little emojis in the background halor says no
it was gradual Arian says it was only small he said it was gradual Says and so this here it happens in tiny gradual steps exactly correct J says in the first paragraph it said not sudden modifications which is exactly true so if we look at this here it says As Natural Selection act solely by accumulating slight successive favorable variations no great or sudden modifications and we know sudden is wrong significant changes is wrong gradual is right significance wrong this one here was the only one that had Everything right so these are the small little things
to look out for you can see the question is not that difficult so if the passage is harder the questions are going to be easier see was right here but they will have those little tricks but I think we're all capable of getting this one correct even though the passage is hard questions not too bad question number two what principle does a phrase Natura nonf faet salum Support what do we think so this is a bit of a harder one so I'm going to put the passage back up you can have a look and try
and figure it out it's obviously very difficult to know what on Earth natur of non facets Alum even means but we can use our own intelligence to figure it out what would make more sense someone said hence is the key word I would agree someone said is on this theory is important as well It is Latin so I would agree okay so a lot of us for this one are going with B so even though the passage was super difficult and realistically like I don't know what this means either we can figure it out because
it says this first sentence says natural selection it's about small little tweaks over time small changes over a long period of time this here says hence so therefore because of what we just read This phrase confirms this Theory essentially this sentence here is essentially saying hence the Canon which just means like the saying is makes sense saying something is intelligible means it makes sense J says I think hence gave it away which is exactly right so what principle does the phrase natural and nonf support we know it supports essentially this first sentence so this One
here nature is abundant and prodigal and talent not really any evidence for that they say that on later on here but I don't really know how that what this means B nature makes changes through gradual incremental step seems pretty true to me that's what the first sentence is about this sentence here is kind of saying hey the first sentence is correct C evolutionary changes are both incremental and occasionally significant Leaps nope no significant leaps and human and actions do not affect natural processes does anyone want to raise their hand and explain why D is factually
incorrect based on this passage maybe isach or S maybe sorry I C on the wrong person or isach see the difference between B and D is that um although humans actions do not really affect the natural process it doesn't really really Embody what it's saying throughout the text and what is what it's implying throughout the text saying that oh it happens very gradually very incre uh incremental steps but the but the changes do happen it has nothing to do with Human Action I would agree I would agree it doesn't really have anything to do with
Human Action the way we know that as well is in this paragraph here which this is irrelevant to this particular question but here it says There was this Barren land it had been never touched by the hand of man they planted a tree and it had a big impact so we know that the idea that human actions do not affect natural processes this whole paragraph is disproving that fact so yeah that was true as well so well done there let's have got another question so everyone's done pretty well with these so far question three how
does Darwin challenge the idea of independent creation of each species Again I'll put the passage up for this one it's a bit more difficult what do we think how does he challenge the idea of independent creation of each species we've got some good answers here in the chat I'm just reading through them now okay so got some A's got some B's got some C's some people are asking can you bring a highlight to the exam unfortunately not fortunately so how does Darwin challenge The idea of independent creation of each species people saying why can't we
bring highlighters unfortunately that's just their rules I agree it would be nice I would like having a calculator in there with me but they're not nice about that unfortunately what can you bring you can bring a pen and that's really it unfortunately and a watch so how does Char Dar Charles Darwin challenge the idea of independent creation of each Species Emily says it's C and it's in the first paragraph does anyone want to raise their hand and explain what they think Emily or anyone else maybe Jade um so Charlie I kind of Ed like the
elimination method for this one where um so like just from the main idea or like purpose yeah it was it was already stated that um um like Charles Darwin was saying that um nature changes Through small and like incremental like steps and stuff like that and then the second one by stating the second option saying by stating so first like a like when you first read it it sounds like really funny like kind of awkward but then when you go to the other ones where like B where it says by stating that species change on
their own accord without any human interference it doesn't he never really states that in the paragraph like from what I know I Don't think he ever stated that and then by questioning why natur so see by questioning why natural laws would apply if speeches were created independently he never question at all in this thing and then D would like by showing that speeches have similar genetic he never did that so just go just eliminating like the things I think it was a but I'm not sure it was kind of hard it was a hard one
I'd largely agree with you there so i' agree That b never mentioned D never mentioned but did he ever question if natural laws would apply did he have a question this bill says he did says he did Taylor says he questioned in the last sentence I do agree a is a pretty good answer it's true it's the main idea but is it the way he challenges the idea in creation manaza do you have any thoughts um I think that the sea might be correct because like in the first paragraph in the last sentence he kind
Of questions by asking like by why this should be a law of nature if each species has been independently created no man can explain like in that um answer C it kind of tells us as well like by questioning why nature laws would apply and the same thing is kind of in the paragraph one like in the end so I think that's why I C might be correct I agree so I'd say this one's pretty difficult this question some people are saying they found this one Tough now I think you can rule out B and
and D pretty comfortably just because they're not really mentioned in there but a is a good answer but it's just not linked enough to the question whereas this one here by questioning why Naturals would apply to species were created independently it kind of does say that here so C was actually the correct answer here that's I see was correct son says this was somewhat easier maybe I think it was still pretty Tough it was it was pretty difficult this sort of question 20% of people would probably get it right not very many now just before
we move on to the next question a lot of people are asking different things in terms of the exam day experience so in terms on the actual exam day they do have a clock that you look at um and so when you're going through and reading you do want to keep track of time think okay I've got about A little bit of time to read this passage maybe you want to spend about a minute reading the passage at the start for example a minute a minute and a half try and understand the main idea because
that's going to make it easier to answer the questions like we saw unfortunately you can't really bring much into the exam you can bring a watch you can bring a a pen you can't bring multicolor pens you can't bring calculators you can't bring anything else at all all you the Only things you can bring is water a SL a small snack Pen watch not an electronic watch only a dig only a um manual watch that's it um you do need to bring ID and I think you can bring your phones maybe you have to put
them under the desk or something they don't let you obviously put them on the table but yeah some people saying can you bring a rubber now the exam was all in pen last year so that was no need for Rubbers um any ID is okay International ID would be fine now they don't give us reading time so a lot of people say do you get reading time for reading comprehension where you can read through first Unfortunately they don't the time just opens up and that's it you you got the exam now some people are asking
what happens if you do the wrong thing what would happen if you use your phone now in the in the year where I did the exam someone used the phone near me and no This wasn't yeah this was not the this was the first time I start the exam someone used their F and someone came up and just ripped up the paper and just ripped it in half and that was the end of it for them so you probably don't want to take the risk realistically it was a bit offputting to see someone's exam paper
being ripped off that's for sure um some people are saying can you bring what kind of ID do you need to bring so ID I'll send everyone's parents An email about this in this week but you will need to have some form of ID if you don't have a passport then you can get something called a key pass I think from Australia Post now there's quite a bit of questions I might get to the rest of these questions at the end we'll just go through few more questions question number four what is the significance of
the example involving the scotch fur in Staffordshire what's the significance of The scotch fur in Staffordshire send your answer in the chat box okay lots of people going with B here lots of people saying that the significance is that it shows how a single species can influence an entire ecosystem is B correct yes it is so what's the significance of the example involving the scotch fur basically the scotch fur was a type of plant that they planted Led to the land becoming amazing after it had been baren and so it really showed that a single
species can influence an entire ecosystem one tree one plant can impact everywhere whenever I see the scotch be I always think of a scotch fet rather than a plant but anyway final question which of the following is not true based on the passage which of the following of these is not true based on the passage R cash very quick Troy quick as Well well done well done har he's got the right answer well done Bill Ashton Nan tryan good to see you as well thinks at something and he thinks correctly Ang almost almost Ang maybe
Recon consider ran you're on the ball same as Leo and Pras it's fun because no one else can see the chat so I can say you're right But no one knows so what is the answer this is a difficult one whoever's spamming their answer there is unfortunately not correct I won't say their name but not correct which of the following is not true based on the passage does anyone want to explain this one for me maybe Anna or if not yeah I had my um mic unmuted for a question oh that's okay we'll come back
to to your question after this then Um maybe let's go to isach got his hand up so I picked C saying the the phrase Natura non faacd salum largely supports Darwin contesting this notion of small evolution AR changes over time it's just simply not stated that it supports Darwin that's true well I would actually say it does the truth is you're actually correct so C is the right answer but it's correct for a different reason would you say that this statement Contests the notion of small evolutionary changes over time no because it because the whole
passage is just saying oh the um selective of um Evolution happens over a small a large period period of times and over very gradually it happens agree agre you're exactly right You' got the right answer I would agree with you there what about maybe Leo do you have any thoughts um so contest basically means He's challenging or trying to fight that the that the idea of small evolutionary changes over time is like wrong so he's B basally saying that it's like wrong but if we we've read through the whole thing and it's been talking about
how small evolutionary changes over time is basically natural selection or nature nonf faet sulum so he's if he's challenging or contesting then that's that's the false answer yeah exactly right so Leah explained it very well There and it's just because the wording of this is kind of confusing the phrase natural non facet Sultan largely supports Darwin and does support Darwin but not byting the of small evolutionary changes that's what Darwin thinks so it should say agreeing with the notion if it was correct but it doesn't it says contesting the notion and that's why this one
is not right because this statement backs up down yes but by agreeing with this point not disagreeing With it and so C was correct there so well done to everyone who got that correct a lot of C's let's see who got it right Dev good stuff who else got a rer z who's on the ball travar vidit Jack n mid Tanish lots of people got it right rusher AA very good job rusher and R cash and gav now some people saying Ryan says my brain told me to pick it so Ryan's got he's got a
magic ability he can use his intuition to find the right answer which Is good some people saying what about a d believes it evolutionary changes occur through SL except variation so this is true this statement is is true and we're looking for one that's not true unfortunately successive so successive is okay so someone here say says not successive so slight successive is okay like successive is okay that is true some people who got the right Answer are saying they guess that's okay it's all good so what we're going to do now is we're going to
do one more Passage then I'm going to give us a bit of time at the end just for some general questions about the exam how things work this week's Q&A well we'll do plenty of time around how things work so we're all on the same page with that passage number two now the question is someone says when mock exam 6 coming out it's all uploaded It's all ready it will be released tomorrow morning it's all good to go now the question is I'm just going to try and figure this out do we want to read
a passage about Sherlock Holmes or do we want to read a passage about Sandra Patel so your choice send Sherlock Holmes in the chat or Sandra Patel okay I don't think anyone's saying Sandra Patel one person Did okay we'll do we'll do Sandra pel and manaza we be reading this first parag so maaza you have a go my dear fellow said Sherlock Holmes as we sound either side of the fire in his lodgings at Baker Street life is infinitely Stranger Than Anything which the mind of man could invent we could not dare to conceive the
things which are really mere common places of existence if we could fly out of their window hand in hand hover over this Great City gentle remove the roofs and Peep at the queer things which are going on the strange coin coincidence the plannings the cross purposes the wonderful chains of events working through generations and leading to the most out results it would make all Fiction with its conventionalities and foreseeing conclusions most stale and unprofitable very good so nice and clearly read there going to get do the same as what we did Before I'm just seeing
if anyone's already sent it and I'll explain so some people are saying what do we mean by the mock exam happening tomorrow there's just a mock exam being uploaded so you can complete it at any time in the next month be available anyone want to send in the chat what does this paragraph mean I'll give you a minute or so Okay so we've got some different interpretations here Anyone want to raise their hand and explain it a lot of what you're saying is mby pretty good maybe ran when I have a go explaining uh so
basically these two people are sitting on the camp fire um they they one of them start by saying life is infinitely stranger and then they start talking about it so I think they're talking about life or something like that exactly right so I do agree it's Really about two people sitting around talking about life and about how it's strange anyone want to add a little bit to that one maybe Casper I like what You' said there maybe dar um so here it says like we can use like the teal method here like in the so
if we read like the first sentence is said like adding on to his that life is infinitely Stranger Than Anything which the mind of man could invent yeah I agree so that does give us a big Hint there one thing I would say is we've got to be careful with teal because teal is mainly used for then know what's te mainly Ed for send it in the chat it's mainly Ed for essay writing for formal writing whereas this to me seems more of a story and so for stories we don't we don't really use te
as much that's one thing to be careful with but it worked in this example so that's okay anyone want to maybe arrive what do you Think um I think that I think he's trying to say that that we can't make assumptions about life and conceive about it to be boring cuz it says in like the last lines it says that um if we what if we cons make all Fiction with its conventionalities and unforeseen conclusions most stale and unprofitable these probably mean like if you try to make conclusions about how your life will go you're
probably going to be bored and miserable to it yeah I would Agree I would largely agree with you there arav now let's just do one more let here from Leah fin one um I was going to say that if you already know what's going to happen like these strange coincidences if you already know um what's going to happen then it's not life becomes really boring it's like it's not interesting because you already know what's going to happen and it just takes that El liit of surprise out so I think that's what it's About I would
agree I would definitely agree with that there in that Leah is correct let's do one more let's do handy um so can you just write the answer to the question is life is like weird you could you could so in terms of the real exam we it will be all multi Choice Lu so we won't actually have to write any answers but for this exercise the fact that life is much weirder and surpriser than we could ever ever Imagine essentially what it's saying here is if we could fly out of our Windows look at what
everyone's doing we would be like oh my God this is so much more confusing than and strange than we would have ever thought and so yeah that's completely okay let's have does anyone to read these final two ones here any want to read these final two maybe maybe Hugo yet I am not convinced of I Answered the cases which come to light in the papers are as a rule bold enough and vulgar enough we have in our police reports realism pushed to its extreme limits and yet the result is it must be confessed neither fascinating
nor artistic sudden selection and discretion must be used in producing a realistic effect remarked Holmes this is wanted in the this is wanting in the police report where more stress is laid upon the platitudes of the M magistrate than upon The details to which an observer contain the vital essence of the whole matter depend upon it there is nothing so unnatural as the Common Place very good so very well read There by Hugo I thought that was very very clear and well read what does it mean now we're running short on time so I'm going
to help explain a little bit of it in this here someone else is speaking Taylor says I think it was maybe a police officer or a sheriff Probably true and this person's disagreeing they're saying you think it's all strange I think the cases that come to light in the newspapers are not all that interesting they're saying I'm not that convinced it's not that strange it's not that amazing the other person then saying a certain selection and discretion must be used in producing a realistic effect and so Sherlock is essentially Saying well yeah that's just what
happens in the newspaper that's not actually what happens they just make it look like that because they don't want it to be too complicated and so what's really happening here is there's a bit of dialogue here between Sherlock Holmes and someone else Sherlock Holmes is initially saying everything is much stranger than what you could expect it's so much more stranger you would never be able to Predict some of the things that are happening around the world and if we knew everything that would happen life wouldn't be as interesting it wouldn't be as as entertaining as
it is now and this person is saying no I don't think that's the case I read the newpaper it's all that interes I don't agree with you there and then Sherlock Holmes is saying I think actually that's not correct because in The newspapers they have to tone things down they have to make them more muted so the masses are okay with it but that's not actually how life is and so Taylor says here I think the sheriff is contradicting Sherlock's statement and saying that life is pretty boring and basic that's true now he's not necessarily
saying whoops my calculator diction come up I'm not sure he's saying it's boring and basic but he's definitely contradicting it he's saying Yeah it's it's not all what you're saying Sherlock AR says it's sherock Holmes in another random character probably a police officer it's true that's probably who speaking there final paragraph anyone want to read this last one here maybe [Music] van I smiled and shook my head I can quite understand your thinking so I said of course in your position of unofficial Advisor and helper to everybody who is absolutely puzzled throughout three continents you
are brought in contact with all that are strange and bizarre but here I picked up the morning paper from the ground let's put it to a practical test here is the first heading upon which I come a husband's cruelty to his wife there is half a column of print but I know without reading it that it is all perfectly familiar to me very good so well read there from vanan As we can see in this last paragraph here this police officer again or whoever it is shaking the head saying look I I can understand you're
thinking so but I don't think that is true he's trying to prove Sherlock wrongs homes wrong says Jay he's clearly his mentioned says exactly right so we're running a little bit short on time so let's do a few final questions to test our skills then we will I'll spend a little bit of time Answering some round questions what is home's view on the stranger of real life compared to fiction what does he think so this was the focus in that first paragraph send your answers in the chat box we've got some of everything so far
we've got some a some B's some SE as well now if you're going with C which a lot of you are I would recommend reconsidering potentially so really the key one here Is this sentence life is infinitely Stranger Than Anything which the mind of man could invent which means he essentially saying he real life to be much Stranger Than Fiction can be this essentially means that b was correct there this one here he believes fure fiction is stranger and more engaging no that's wrong he thinks the opposite of that he claims that complexity of real
life could never be captured of fiction complexity Complexity is probably the word here it's more about the strangeness the strangeness rather than complexity and then this one here he prefers the structured nature of fictional narratives there's no evidence that now some people are saying what does it mean by stranger it means Strang so something that's a little bit different now maybe manaza do you want to answer why it's right um I think it's right because like In the sentence that you highlighted in the paragraph it says that life is like infinitely Stranger Than Anything where
the mind of man could event like the mind of man like inventing stuff it just means like imagining stuff for like creating something that's not really true so which is technically like fiction so that's why B is correct because it says that like he finds real life to be much more Stranger Than like fiction can ever be like in like fiction Is technically like how it said like the man could like imagine and stuff exactly right so that sentence there really gives it away and that was a good explanation let's get through two more questions
then we're going to do five minutes of as many questions as you want for me question number two how does a narrator respond to opinions on the of real events we know this is the person who responding to homes what were they saying were they saying they agreed they Disagreed what were they saying now one thing is we're looking for the initial response how does how does the narrator respond not what's their overall opinion maybe at the end down here how do they respond initially anyone want to put their hand up and explain how they
initially respond to his opinions on the nature of real events anyone Maybe Uh I think at the starting he's um like like the person we're looking from is like not convinced CU in the second paragraph he says and yet I'm not convinced of it as that kind of tells us that he's not he's skeptical of his decision which could which points to be yeah agree so I think in this paragraph he's not yet convinced later on I think he just says homes you're wrong I don't agree with you but here he's just not convinced and
so initial response how Does the narrator respond to home's opinions he acknowledges them but he remains undecided he remains unconvinced so a was correct here B he's skeptical and unable to see homes rationale he he kind of explains that he can see the rationale he doesn't necessarily agree with it he's not totally convinced but he can understand it Chow is looks like there's a few people going crazy there on this corner of the screen which means I need to go boom unfortunately It was while lasted but yeah a was correct here see he's indifferent to
home's insights he's not indifferent he's interested by he finds home's views too pessimistic no really no and so one final question can we all get it right can we end on a high send your answer to the chat box what critique does homes offer regarding the police reports mentioned in the passage I'll give you the full paragraph so you can have a go with it What critique so critique means what criticism what criticism does coms have people are saying D largely what criticism does holes have does he say they're too focused on important details no
he doesn't does he say they're overly complex and difficult to understand no does he say they only provide irrelevant information no he says they lack artistic and controversial elements he says the newspapers they're Watered down they avoid the controversy they avoid the strangeness they just do what it is they just avoid all the strange stuff that's why the newspaper seem normal and so it is deep now someone has a timer on and it is moving at a record record breaking Pace but that's okay so D is correct here now that brings us to the end
of today's lesson key insights for us to take away key insights these passages Were hard if it's it's natural to feel like these these were hard to understand it's that's okay the key thing is we want to practice on harder passages so when we get to the real exam we find it easy everyone else is floundering they're getting stressed when they see these sorts of difficult pressions if they come up which they could could something come up from Sherlock Holmes for sure 100% And so we want to practice on them now so when they do
come up if They do it's easy key thing to do to make them easy is focus on the main idea if you're can to find the main idea you can answer any question as we saw we all did pretty well with these questions because we focused on finding the main idea now what I'm going to say is before I go through the homework send through any questions you have about the exam overall into the chat box I'll try and answer as as many as I can in the next five minutes and then we will go
through The homework so someone said how did you deal with nerves before the exam personally what I did is I like to the night before just do no study so the night before the exam no study do something relaxing wake up in the morning do something that relaxes you personally for me that was just having a nice relaxing breakfast doing a little bit of reading looking over my notes a little bit and then just getting into exam early so I wasn't stressed that's Personally I did it on exam day how do I deal with my
nerves what I find once you get in and you've done like the first three or four questions you're in you're into the exam mode and so I normally find the first couple of questions it feels a little bit stressful but once you're in you're in your Flow State you're into it so I just try and get into those first questions as fast as I can we will go through more stuff about how to manage nerves before the exam as We get up to that point though so we'll do sort of bull stuff on that someone
asked does every student get working out paper most of the time yes yes if you don't you can just write on the booklets so there'll always be somewhere to write um someone said is a reading section of the exam time pressured but most people probably not I would say someone said how many tests you need to pass to get in so there's the one selective entry test there's five sections on it you Need to be in the top 10% in at least three of those to get in the other two you probably want to be
in top 20% one of them could be super low if the other ones are super high but yeah someone said are you allowed to chew gum you are not someone said what are some key notes to take from this lesson number one key note is really in reading comprehension it's about understanding the main idea doesn't matter if it's a cartoon if it's a poem If it's a super hard passage if You understand what it's really about what it's mainly talking about any question you'll be able to answer now someone asked says out of the four
schools is there a school that's particularly hard to get in than the others so mcrob melbour high nosul all pretty much the same you probably need to get three scores in the top 10% and two in the top 20% for suzan Cory it's a little bit easier maybe two sections in the top 10% three in the top 20% a Little bit easier for Susan Cory now Mir said on the mass part of the exam will all the questions be hard or will some be easier last year there was some easy questions there was some hard
ones there was just more hard ones um so they'll always be again there's going to be some easy ones there's going to be five 10 marks that are super fast you want to get them you want to do them at the start and so we'll talk about more about exam strategy as we get closer to the Exam you want to be smart with how you handle your time do the easy ones first leave the hard ones at the end don't waste your time on them now Taylor said to in a real exam would you read
the whole passage for a main idea question now in the real exam you would always you would want to read the main idea you would sorry always want to read the passage there could be a question asking you for what is the main idea it would be multi-choice not Type down but you would generally on this exam want to spend time comprehending because you do have the time you've got a minute per question now for year 10 same thing same results apply three top 10% two top 20 you write 25 Jonathan now the exam application
is online as far as I'm aware but I will send everyone an email with details around That um now some people are saying can you redo the mock exams I wouldn't really recommend redoing the mock exams because we're going to be releasing so many I would recommend reviewing them really carefully studying them but then just preparing for the next one we do what would the exam setting be like it's going to be a big Hall there'll be 3 400 people in there and you'll all be sitting the exam next to other people Someone said can
you bring a dog unfortunately not now there's no interview for most people who apply most people get in without an interview if you just miss out then sometimes might have to do an interview you can normally do workout on the booklet yes if you're getting 70% on any anything right now a few people are asking that it's pretty good that means you're going to be able to improve up to where we would want before the exam last Year some people said there was kind of like 8 to 10,000 people who said the exam but about
to say the question worths different marks now every question is worth one Mark and what's the easiest school to get into it is probably Susan Cory it's easiest by a little bit everyone sits the exam on one day and the exam is not digital so it is Unfortunately in person now let's quickly go through the homework because we're we're getting towards the end homework for this week same as everything is to log to it accelerator complete your personalized learning plan so this was released yesterday now the new [Music] one so complete these seven little modules
next couple of days once you finish this you will find a mock exam Waiting for you which will be called mock exam 6 it will be called C official mock exam not official but it's official for us M's our number one so we called C's official one and that is the one you want to complete and I'd recommend completing that in the next couple of weeks if you can constellation names have come to an end unfortunately for the mock exams because it's it's time to get serious with the mock exams so mock exam will be
available later this week Start with that one so if you haven't done if you've done these ones already or if you haven't done them I'll just leave that and do the new one we're releasing as a first priority otherwise we might leave it there if you have any questions feel free to bring them to the Q&A we'll spend a bit of time in the Q&A this week just answering general questions about the exam you generally do get spare working out paper a few people have asked about that but if not You can just write on
