what happened here'll always be a part of you welcome back to the 12th annual Hall special tonight we're talking about a new release this film comes out on Max this weekend and it's called Catt Lake it's written and directed by Logan George and Seline held and it's produced by ight Shyamalan and the story is when an 8-year-old girl disappears on Catt Lake a series of past deaths and disappearances begin to link together altering a broken family's history I heard about this movie because of shyamalan's involvement and this is actually kind of special because he doesn't
typically produce other people's films he produced his daughter's film this year the Watchers and then you got to go all the way back to 2010 for devil and if you look at the filmographies of the Catt Lake directors they had a feature called topside that played at some very prestigious festivals and then eventually did some TV work including servant which I'm assuming is where they met Shyamalan and potentially pitched him this idea and having seen the film I can see exactly why he flipped for it because it has all the Hallmarks of something that ight
Shaman would make himself and I'm going to warn you ahead of time that I'm going to be very vague with this video I don't want to get into specifics because I was able to watch this film very early and not know anything about it I hadn't even seen a fulllength trailer or anything I had no idea what this film was about and that Journey made it so much more exciting and I really don't want to have you guys go in knowing too much and other people I'm sure are going to say some specific words and
phrases about this movie where you're going to go okay I see where things are going and I don't want you guys to feel that way because I had a very genuine experience watching this it's been a very long time that the direction of film takes surprises me this movie has a series of reveals that I found so effective I actually paused the film and just sat back and thought about it for a while if I'm watching a movie on streaming at home that doesn't usually happen I'm usually kind of like wrapped up in the story
but I was like holy and I had to pause it and just think about everything that I had seen so far in the movie and I was like no that all still works okay that's really exciting when that happens and I want you guys to have that same experience so try to avoid spoilers as best you can try to even avoid like light spoilers cuz a lot of people review movies nowadays and they put in the headline some huge thing about the film and you're like oh well all right I'm looking forward to that now
and it feels like it's all just lost the fun Dylan O'Brien plays a man who works this Lake he's salvaging and scrapping for parts and he's recovering from a tragedy that's very recent and still feels very fresh and he is excellent in this film every time I see him I'm always really impressed he has headlined a franchise Trilogy in The Maze Runner he's had a few really great opportunities like American Assassin and loving monsters and despite all of that success as well as his TV work I still think that he's got a lot more to
give this guy is so good like I genuinely believe that he could be like a global Superstar if he just finds that perfect role he is phenomenal in this movie equally terrific is Eliza scanland her family is kind of torn apart and she has really serious issues with her mother and when this 8-year-old girl goes missing because of various reasons she feels very guilty about it like she could have done more to prevent it from happening and she's out there on the lake constantly searching for her but they're seeing strange things on the lake things
that shouldn't be there various anomalies they're hearing sounds that don't seem to make sense something very very strange is happening on this Lake which brings our characters into a surprisingly effective mystery that goes places I really didn't expect this movie has so many things in it that just really speak to me in fact it's so specifically my thing that I have to wonder if other people will even appreciate it like I did it's entirely possible that I'll be in the minority with this but I just really found this movie to be extremely effective in how
it portrays its characters exploring a mystery with very limited Exposition there are some sequences that help explain a few things but for the most part you are left in the cold you are not spoonfed there are things happening that don't make any sense and you're watching it scratching your head wondering will I ever realize exactly what's going on and eventually things do come to fruition but the movie takes its time time to get there and it relies on you leaning in and being like I'm curious and I want to know the answers but I'm okay
with the fact that you're not giving them to me every scene that's the thing that's happening a lot with movies lately where mystery is not allowed to Foster to develop where everyone seems to be afraid of people clicking away from a movie or exiting out of their streaming app and choosing another one and so they want everyone to be like stimulated every second it's awful and I hate it and Cat Lake despite debuting on a streaming service does not have any of those qualities and for that reason I could see some people finding the film
boring or like it took too long to get places and I just feel the polar opposite of that I love that I was waiting for answers I love that I wasn't being handheld by this film and eventually when things do come to light it's like okay yes all of this works and even then the movie remains rather gutsy there are some very sad elements to this movie very tragic elements ments that don't wrap everything up in a perfect bow so when the answers do come they might not be with a warm embrace for those reasons
cattle Lake really impressed me you could say it's a featurelength episode of The Twilight Zone and that would be a massive compliment in my book so I hope you guys check out the film like I said it's debuting this weekend on Max guys thank you so much for continuing to watch the 12th annual Halloween special and if you like this you can click right here and get stuck minized [Music]
