[Music] [Music] in this video I present to you one of the earliest examples of Greek life-size sculpture found in 1878 on the Greek island of delos by French archaeologist theophil Halal the statue of Nick Andre today is displayed at the national AR olical museum at Athens with the inventory number one it is 1.75 m tall made of marble and apart from the left forearm fully preserved the statue shows a woman clothed with a belted peplos and an epma beneath the plinth on which the feet rest there is a 25 cm long Tenon with which the
statue was fastened in the base on the left side of the statue there is a vertically iniz inscription it consists of three hexameters in two lines it is written Buster feden which literally means like the ox turns while plowing it means you start writing in One Direction and at the end of the line you turn and reverse the writing Direction translated the inscription says Nick Andre dedicated me to the goddess the far shooter of arrows Nick Andre the daughter of dionos of nais renowned among women sister of damin and wife of fraxos this dedication in
first person unfortunately does not make clear whether the dedicating person in our case Nick Andre or the goddess Artemis is represented in this Photograph you also can see that the statue only has little depth it is only a hands breadth deep which reminds of earlier Zanna wooden board like cult images in both hands there are drill holes for non-mar marble maybe bronze attributes if the goddess Artemis is to pick did in those holes maybe were fastened bow and arrows if the statue means Nick Andre herself maybe she was represented with offerings for the goddess for
example flowers concerning the date of the statue we need to take a look at its face it is tapered to the front and almost keeled which is a characteristic of the early dellic style therefore we have to date the Corey of Nick Andre in the time around 660 BC thanks for watching if you enjoyed this video please subscribe so you won't miss new [Music] ones
