[Music] what's up guys smiles here with 95 mac and if you're a fan of good ideas be sure to subscribe to the channel for future content like this a semi-recent apple product that nobody really talks about anymore is airpods max apple's 550 pair of over-ear headphones and why is it that nobody talks about airpods max well perhaps is the fact that the price tag scared most people away or maybe they're just not worth it i've got an initial review of these on the channel so definitely check that out if you haven't already because that'll basically
provide context for where we stand today i'm making this video because i've had airpods max for a while and if you've been keeping an eye on the pricing of these at third party retailers you can pretty much find these anywhere for under 500 i've seen some for as low as 400 and while that's still not cheap by any means our airpods max a better value proposition at that price well let's find out [Music] while i've had my airpods max for a little over a year i haven't exactly been as rough with them or used them
as much as my airpods pro i've traveled with them for a few trips but outside of that they really never leave the house and of course their value plays a part in that but i personally just prefer using lightweight earbuds when i'm out and about and these just don't sound good enough for me to change that habit so with that being said i don't think i'm the best person to judge how the physical quality of these holds up over time and with my daily use but my pair has held up decently well i think my
biggest concern for the long term was the rubber and mesh materials used for the head rest and while i'm sure there are examples of these out there getting beat up bad mine have been fine so if you don't use these all that heavily it should hold up well i can see the color in the ear cups have faded definitely a bit but thankfully replacing them is as easy as just taking it off and putting anyone on the case for my pairs also held up well over time but i don't imagine that'll be the case haha
forever just given the material of this thing and in general i still really hate the case for these headphones i'm still very much in the belief that the case should have been one of the best parts about these headphones they could have come up with something so slick and interesting or something that matched the premium price tag of these headphones i remember when these were announced and everyone on tech twitter was weighing in and there were youtubers exclaiming that a large part of the design was a fashion move for apple and that celebs would be
spotting carrying the airpods max out like a purse and so i thought it'd be interesting to take a look at some celebs wearing airpods max out and about because there were some people who outwardly defended this case as a part of the fashion aspect of the design so let's see celebrities rocking airpods max with this case out and about so taking a look at this first picture here i believe this is bradley cooper rocking some space gray airpods max and uh yeah he's carrying around his neck not really like a purse um like some people
said he would be or celebrities would be he's not really much of a fashion guy so i guess we should probably take a look at someone who's much more like into fashion i guess or outwardly into fashion so this is justin bieber's wife or girlfriend whatever and here she is with a pair of airpods max i think this is the the green colorway i forgot the exact name for it but uh yeah no case to be found and i really wonder why because you know people were saying it's a huge part of the the fashion
element of the design this this lovely amazing case here but you know apparently miss bieber doesn't want anything to do with it here's another picture of miss bieber with justin on the back and you see here she's got a different pair of airpods max so it's now evident that she owns or maybe that's his pair justin's pair but she has access to two different pairs of airpods max and she doesn't use the case with either of them when traveling um she's clearly out and about here and doesn't have the case anywhere with her because this
case is rubbish nobody wants anything to do with it and then here's a picture of timothy charlemage or child whatever his last name is um actor person rocking airpods max in the uh the blue colorway that i have and the case is nowhere to be seen and you can see here if you really want to like get in depth with it it may seem like you have some sort of like satchel bag on like behind him that you can't really see but you know he's got a big coat and his hands are in his pockets
and i don't think his hands would be in his pockets like that if he had the case in one of those pockets so i'm just gonna go out on a limb and assume that he doesn't have the case on him in this photo because like i said the case is rubbish and nobody wants anything to do with it all in all i do believe that apple wanted to have a certain effect on people with the design of the headphones and the case and clearly celebrities are wearing these out and about but the case is never
anywhere to be seen and that's because this case is just bad so that's that's that i also want to talk about the lightning port on airpods max because to me there's no reason why there needed to be a lightning port other than just to be consistent with the rest of the airpods lineup but this is the premium pair of airpods so i feel like we should have gotten the better port a proper usbc connection could have allowed for hi-fi connections to a mac or something like that and given the fact that everything else i use
has usb-c is just more convenient quite honestly and while we're talking about that charging port let's talk about the charging and battery bugs that i and many others have experienced many times when picking up airpods max after not using them for a day or so the battery will be nearly completely drained even though it was fully charged or pretty much close to it and inside of the case during that time period it's annoying and not at all acceptable for headphones that cost this freaking much software updates have improved this problem over time but it still
happens to me every once in a while i also really hate the charging indicator light because oftentimes i have to unplug the cable and plug it back in once or twice just to see the charging indicator light come on so i know it's actually charging and just sitting there having to wait for that visual confirmation is also not acceptable for headphones that cost this much and let's talk about noise cancellation and transparency mode because outside of the sound quality these are still the best aspects of these headphones if you ask me the over ear format
just offers a level of isolation with the noise cancellation that in-ear headphones like airpods pro just can't offer it's legitimately like being in your own world when using the noise cancellation and transparency mode is even more impressive if you ask me apple's literally using microphones on the headphones and translating that into a sound that makes it feel like you're not wearing headphones at all and so far i haven't come across any other pair of wireless headphones with something anywhere close to this sound quality as a whole has never been a problem with me for these
headphones the audio quality alone certainly doesn't justify the retail price tag though but let's be honest nobody buys apple products and especially apple audio products purely for the technical performance so i think anyone considering these headphones to begin with shouldn't be disappointed at all they get plenty loud and offer a pretty balanced sound the bass for certain tracks can really thump but it's never overbearing and mids and highs are pretty crisp and clear this is the one pair of consumer oriented headphones that i can use with a custom equalizer profile on my music player of
choice normally when messing around with the eq on airpods pro or headphones like it that sound falls apart when making any noticeable changes to the eq but with airpods max you can actually benefit from tweaking the sound profile for certain tracks and i will say that everything apple is trying to do with dolby atmos support and on apple music is really cool as well i haven't gotten any extensive use out of the apple music spatial audio stuff personally because i just hate apple music as an app but i've gone through and listened to a bunch
of songs in apple's spatial audio playlist and it's a really cool experience one that you won't get on any other pair of wireless headphones it's also noteworthy that wired mode is noticeably cleaner than using them wirelessly and while you don't have true lossless support with these headphones your lossless music even if you have any will definitely sound better through a wired connection it's not hard to like what apple's brought to the table in terms of the audio experience with these headphones so at 550 these are probably still not worth it for most people but at
450 or 403 i think it's definitely worth considering if you're already knee-deep in the apple ecosystem you want the airpods experience in over ear form and want the best built headphones with an airpods-like connectivity experience but if all the apple specific features aren't a big deal to you then you probably weren't ever interested in these to begin with and now that we've gotten that out of the way let's talk about airpods max 2 and what i think those should be bringing to the table in order to be a success firstly make the case actually useful
integrate some charging into it some way it can be done so apple just just do it and if not at least make the case more premium because what we got now is just it's just wack secondly we need usbc i know they never want to fold on it for the iphone but having usb c for this product just makes so much more sense and then lastly these headphones need to be at least a hundred dollars cheaper than what the originals retail for i don't think these were an extremely successful product for apple and i'm sure
the price tag played a very major role in that especially with the over ear market segment shrinking by the day so i think a 450 price tag would allow apple to still like maintain their pride and actually get some real sales but that's about it for this one though i'm gonna leave some links in the description below where you can get these headphones for over a hundred dollars off from trusted sites so be sure to check that out if you're interested and give this video a thumbs up if you enjoyed and subscribe for future content
