[Music] heading into election night the campaigns and the country were braced for days perhaps weeks of vote counting legal challenges and even violence in the end though it was over quickly president-elect Trump won all seven Battleground States and even made it close in some traditionally blue states by expanding his base of support among Latino black and young voters his overwhelming Victory leaving Democrats to re-evaluate their message and their appeal to the American public NBC News Congressional correspondent Julie cirin has our Sunday Focus this was a movement like nobody's ever seen before Donald Trump celebrating perhaps
the greatest political comeback of all time elected the 47th president of the United States and more importantly he's going to win the popular vote winning not only the electoral college but the popular vote too gaining support in more than 90% of counties Nationwide when Trump reluctantly left office in January of 2021 weeks after his supporters stormed the capital he was seen as a pariah America's comeback starts right now and few gave him a chance when he launched his election bid in November of 2022 but despite being convicted on 34 felony counts last May Trump's popularity
only grew his campaign raking in millions his legal troubles only fueling his return 2 months later an assassination attempt at a Pennsylvania rally take a look at what happened the former president bloodied but unbroken urging his supporters to fight Trump expected to face off against the historically unpopular President Joe Biden but after that Infamous debate if we finally beat Medicare Biden was out in a matter of weeks and his vice president kamla Harris was [Applause] in Harris tried to be a fresh face for many disillusioned with both candidates but asked what she would do differently
from Biden she said there is not a thing that comes to mind Parris had the celebrity Factor on her side but Trump bet big on the Bro vote appearing on massively popular podcasts including Joe Rogan and tapped into kitchen table issues like inflation economy e economy that was my top reason Democrats now dissecting their stunning loss the road to the presidency runs not through the far left it runs to the center left which is where the most most of the country is exit polls show Democrats lost major ground to black men Suburban women and firsttime
voters and a stunning loss of support from Latinos who helped carry Biden to victory in 2020 this is one of the more remarkable shifts that we've seen in just a short period of time Latinos cared more about inflation and the economy more than any other demographic group Trump also capitalized on the issue of transgender rights blanking the airwaves with be ads Kamala is for they them president Trump is for you what could have Democrats done to get your vote uh honestly have policies that are uh more applicable to Everyday Life in January Republicans will take
control of the White House the Senate and possibly the house as well leaving Democrats with a long road back to Power where do you see the future of the democratic party moving oh it's moving to the sou searching TI this is going to be a long slog back to a majority not only in the white house but also in in Congress and Julie joins me now live Julie good morning so after Donald Trump's sweeping win on Tuesday where do Democrats begin to address those problems and who are they looking at to lead them into the
future now both great questions Willie good morning look for Democrats it's the way Mark described it right it's soul searching time and now some are publicly pointing fingers like former speaker Nancy Pelosi who said President Biden should have never run for reelection and that vice president Harris should have earned the nomination during the primaries others telling me grievances are a waste of time and that Democrats have to work across the aisle to win back voters as for who leads them well that's the big question a senator told me it's still to be determined Willie a
