welcome to production and operations management today's topic is the bottleneck inspired by the goal by culture hat [Music] [Music] how does this work this glass is Right make any sense oh no this glass is full I couldn't get to last semester either oh you have to wait until next semester again in the goal CRA describes a bottleneck as any part of the process that limits the overall flow so what signals points to this class being the bottleneck First Signal is that the demand exceed capacity the number of students needing the class is way higher than
the spots available the second signal being delays students are forced to delay their graduation by semesters or even years because they can't get into this m horse the third signal is inefficiency because of this one class the whole system or university isn't working as intended close to graduating but I can't register for disc course because there's only one section and it's always full it's not just us half the seniors I know are stuck because of this how do we fix this G theory of constraints has some ideas one Elevate the constraint to increase capacity the
university could add additional professors or add more classes for the same course that's a good idea right yeah right we should do that step two streamline the flow allow students to take equivalent courses or at partner universities to reduce pressure on this one course step three prioritize wasting we can restrict Ru in the seniors first so people cles the graduation don't get stuck how smart they should totally Implement that and don't forget step four continuous Improvement University needs to review this system regularly to prevent future bottlenecks bottlenecks aren't just a manufacturing problem they're everywhere even
in education by identifying the constraint we can apply the theory constraints and fix the system and help students graduate on time after all like cult said the goal is to keep the system flowing whether it's is a factory or university let's remove the bot
