finally a plot twist video this is going to be my favorite video on my channel because I absolutely love plot twists unfortunately because I had the brilliant idea of starting a video essay channel in 2024 there's already a plethora of videos that dive into what I consider to be the very basics of a plot twist the focus of this video is not going to be plot twist 101 instead we're going to solve an interesting phenomena a fatal flaw I've noticed regarding plot twists that nobody seems to acknowledge what I'm calling the plot twist Paradox wow
that's sounds so cool and really makes it seem like I know what I'm talking about you have no idea I'm going to blow your minds anyway we have an absolutely stacked roster of movies in store for today featuring get out and Shutter Island so stay right where you are cuz this video is going to get twisty in order to understand the dreaded plot twist Paradox let's come to an understanding of the one thing a plot twist must do recontextualize the entire story turning everything on its head without breaking the pre-existing logic it has to deeply
rooted in the story leading up to the point of Revelation or the time of the twist in simpler terms it has to be hinted at oh right so you just happen to guess the biggest cinematic reveal in history Vader in German means father Shutter Island and get out are perfect examples of using hints leading up to their twist in my opinion these movies share a lot in common I'd say these are two of my favorite movies behind Interstellar but I digress the point is that I love them and I think the twists are why in
a world world of lousy two-dimensional plot twists they have what I would call a three-dimensional plot twist I guess first I have to explain what a two-dimensional twist is a two-dimensional twist is a withholding of the truth it occurs when the writers deprive information from the viewer in an unnatural way for the sole purpose of forcing mystery it's when things don't add up because we don't have all of the necessary variables needed to solve the equation it's just lazy and if you've watched any of my videos you know that lazy writers are my natural nemesis
luckily we exist in a world of scorsis peels and me a threedimensional plot twist is a concealment of the truth that makes completely natural sense for the story this is achieved by tying the audience to the point of view of a character most often the protagonist let's look at how Shuter Island and get out both achieve this in basically identical ways main character arrives at the setting of the movie for event that should be a typical procedure Marshall Teddy Daniels arrives at shudder Island for another case something he has handled plenty of times Chris Washington
is going to his girlfriend's parents house a standard right of passage for any boyfriend of five or so months things should be normal but main character quickly picks up that a lot of people's Vibes are off the guards in Shutter Island all hold their Firearms close and Teddy's even asked to hand his over and get out Chris is greeted by Rose's dad in a super awkward way who goes on like a weird tangent about his disdain for deer I personally saw a huge parallel when Teddy saw the creepy labot patient and Chris first saw Georgina
both of those scenes basically screamed hey man The Vibes here are really weird at least main character has a trusted side character to navigate this strange place with Teddy with Chuck and Chris with rose fortunately it doesn't take long for main character to become skeptical of their surroundings in Shuter Island Teddy's trying to scope out with the deal with the doctors and guards is and get out Chris is doing the same with Georgina as things escalate main character is confronted by someone who tries to break the illusion Roy tells Teddy everything he was responsible for
his injuries he's in a game he is latus the entire truth Andre King in a brief moment of clarity begs for Chris to get out finally main character is presented the truth in a way that cannot be misinterpreted the Revelation the Twist and shter Island the doctors quite literally spell it out for Teddy Daniels AKA Andrew lus as for Chris and get out it's Rod who actually confirms to him that Logan was Andre King not long after he shown a video that goes in depth on the entire truth made by the arbites thems both of
these twists are fantastic because they make complete sense for the story they recontextualize every scene leading up to the satisfying moment the Dam breaks the story's work is a Twist because ourain characters are the ones who the truth is being concealed from the the twists have such a strong payoff because they answer all of the Mysteries all of the questions all of the weird Vibes that did not make sense as we watched now we have a very important question to ask ourselves what would the revelations be like if they were never hinted at I want
to start with get out because it helps the hypothetical more so if there were never any hints we first have to fix everyone's weird Vibes this means making Rose's dad brother and all the other weird racist old people basically just not talk to Chris about him being black this also means we need to entirely hide Walter Georgina and Logan from Chris because they are dead giveaways that something is off Rose's mom probably couldn't send him to the sunken Place either because that was also way too sus now this leaves us with a completely normal visit
to Rose's parents house then suddenly Chris would get jumped and wake up tied to the chair where the coagulant video plays can you imagine watching that movie a wholesome visit the entire time and suddenly he's the host for a brain transplant that's a twist all right but it's terrible it wouldn't make any sense for the story The only impact it would have on me is on my thumb for shutting off the TV so fast it hurt okay now let's try to remove the hints from Shutter Island this one is hard to even imagine because so
much of the movie was intertwined with a Twist I guess there are two paths we could go down the teddy path and the Andrew path for the teddy path we're embracing the plot that he is a Federal Marshall with the case of finding Rachel cadus firstly all of the employees weird Vibes were hints about the truth because as we know now they were acting in a game for Andrew that would have to change every employee would now be completely normal toward Tedy I guess you could say all the guards would have to lower their guards
eh get it anyway um this means they must answer all of his questions truthfully the doctors couldn't deny him of the information he requested which would all mean he would immediately discover that Rachel does not exist and then the truth would have to come out within like the first 15 minutes of the movie crushing The Twist before it even had a chance to develop for the Andrew path we are embracing the plot that he is a patient well that's it that's the twist it couldn't even exist this way what I'm trying to do is reinforce
the idea that a plot twist absolutely must be interwoven with the story it must be heavily hinted at so I'm curious about how many of you watched these movies for the first time and predicted the twists before they were revealed for me I realized the shudder Island movie twist within the first 30 minutes it was so obvious to me I feel like I could write a plot twist the other day I showed my family get out and they all solved the mystery within the first hour this is not necessarily a bad thing in fact a
lot of the fun of these types of movies is solving the mystery predicting the twist that is the beauty of being locked to the protagonist point of view it allows the audience to actively solve the mystery with the character however for those of you who solved either of these movies can you recall the impact the Revelation had on you when they finally revealed Teddy was in fact latest I was like yep could have told you that an hour ago when I saw latest was one letter short of Daniels it was fun to be right but
the twist was dare I say underwhelming anyway that is the Fatal flaw with plot twists the point of this video when you hide the truth we the audience are naturally inclined to find it that is the plot twist Paradox the more intertwined the Revelation is to the story the more impactful the blow is to the audience simultaneously the more intertwined the Revelation is to the story the more the audience expects a revelation lessening the blow in other words the plot to his Paradox is that the audience has to expect the unexpected if you expect the
unexpected then that makes it expected hence the parad contradictory yet somehow still true so that's it that's the plot twist Paradox it's why all plot twists are doomed they are double-edged swords they're they're like The orob Boro snake eating itself doomed to a fate that they made for themselves and that's the end of the video wait do you guys hear that why why is Interstellar music playing Interstellar four fourth Dimension wait is there a fourth-dimensional plot twist if a third dimensional plot twist conceals the truth then a fourth dimensional plot twist would have to conceal
the mystery itself there's no way that's possible but it is I just did it don't believe me I'll prove it to you this entire time I've been dropping hints of a third type of plot twist but you didn't pick up on them this is going to be my favorite video on my channel because I absolutely love plaw twist you have no idea I'm going to blow your mind this video is going to get twisty how because I didn't just hide the truth from you I hid the mystery from you instead we're going to solve an
interesting phenomena I'd say these are two of my favorite movies behind Interstellar but I digress it's when things don't add up because we don't have all of the necessary variables needed to solve the equation in plain sight it was so obvious to me I feel like I could write a plot twist luckily we exist in a world of squir stes Peels and me I lowered your guards I guess you could say all the guards would have to lower their guards and I had to to prove to you it works there's my plot twist in a
video about plot twists did it work did you predict the fourth dimensional plot twist I'd be surprised I tried to hide the mystery from you what about the impact you just now had on you did it feel like an ass pull or do all those hints make it feel real this video could only ever be a plot twist is the only way to prove my point now you know they work anyway let's talk about Interstellar the fourth-dimensional plot twists are in my opinion the hardest hitting most satisfying Revelations this is because the plot twist Paradox
does not apply to them they are hinted at but they are not expected because the mystery itself is concealed this lowers the audience's guard in interstellar we have the mystery of the ghost the gravitational anomalies the they the fifth dimensional beings that set the entire Plot In Motion unless you have a strong background in physics or exist outside of time yourself I would be extremely surprised if you found out the twist before it was revealed this is because the mystery is not meant to feel like a puzzle to be solved it's a black box furthermore
we are a little distracted by the aot mission to save the world that we hardly have time to consider the origin of the anomaly when it's finally time for Revelation when Coupe is in the black hole everything comes together in the only way it possibly could all along the anomaly was Cooper the they was Humanity who else could it possibly have been it's absolutely perfect in the context of the plot but it goes further it was hinted at over and over stay it told murf parents are ghosts Coupe tells her love transcend space and time
bran tells the crew it felt like a person murf tells Getty everything makes sense slap Han Zimmer over it and you have the Pinnacle of human existence confined to your television screen it's absolutely perfect so there you have it the secret sauce of plot twists to recap withholding the truth is for losers concealing the truth makes for fun puzzles concealing the mystery makes for Heavenly nectar in the form of video this was a super fun video to make I had a cool idea of throwing a plot twist in a video about plot twists and I
just had to give it a try if you guys enjoyed it drop a like and consider subscribing I'm having a ton of fun with this Channel and there's plenty more where this came from oh and let me know your favorite Twist of all time and whether it's a third or fourth dimension twist
