hey guys and welcome to petrol ped now back in 2020 I spent a week with the Armed Forces charity future terrain and there four datcher dusters and we did a whole range of extreme off-roading and I was blown away by the capability of the daa duster a brand I'd not had anything to do with up until that point cars I had no experience of and since then I've driven dusters a number of times and they've always impressed me a great deal behind me is the latest addition to the data range the bigsta think of it
as the dusters Big Brother [Music] he [Music] [Music] [Music] so here it is the new data bigsta now I'm actually in Berlin Germany for an exclusive first look at this car ahead of its Global launch at the Paris motor show next week and we've got this car to ourselves for about an hour so I can walk you around it and show you some of its innovative features I really like the way that dater approach making their vehicles because they're clearly known for good value cars all of their cars come in at price points that are
very very competitive indeed but that doesn't mean to say that they kind of skimp on quality their cars are always very well built they're packed full of features there's some features in this car that are patented to dater you won't find them in anything else so I want to walk around and kind of show you some of those explore how it is that daer can bring cars to Market at such good price points and we haven't got any official pricing for bigsta yet but this car will start from under £30,000 and clearly if you put
some trim levels and there are three different trim levels which we'll talk about it's going to go to early 30s probably for the very top speec most equipped car but that for the for the the stuff that you've got in here is an incredible package for incredible money so let's start off with what for many of you will be good news it's nice to come to a new reveal of of a brand new car that isn't battery electric so the bigsta will have a hybrid and two mild hybrid options but let's Deep dive into the
details so first engine choice for the new Biga is the hybrid 155 really interesting engine this first up the internal combustion engine part so it has a 1.8 L 4 cylinder turbocharged petrol engine running on the Atkinson cycle so tuned for efficiency and that's coupled to a hybrid system and there are two electric motors there's the main 50 horsepower electric motor here which will Propel the vehicle but also regain energy under braking and so on and then a starter and Generator motor just up here uh and this helps with uh the car a early startup
but also it's a clutchless system so this basically helps to synchronize all the gears there are four gears when you're running off the internal combustion engine and two gears when you're running off of the electric motor um and that's then also connected to a 1.4 KW battery that sits under the boot floor that weighs 45 kilos so total output although it's called the 155 it's actually 157 horsepower combination of the two but it has more power more torque and is more fuel efficient than the 140 engine that it's been derived from out of the duster
the second engine choice for the big is the tce 140 now interestingly this engine on display is the Eco G 140 which has LPG capability sadly we're not getting this in the UK but this is a mild hybrid so it has a 48volt mild hybrid system with A8 KW battery pack it's a 1.2 L 3 cylinder engine running on a Miller cycle um and it's coupled to a six-speed manual gearbox the final engine choice that we have for bigsta is the tce 130 4x4 which is in the car that I have in the studio and
that again is a 1.2 L 3-cylinder turbocharge Engine with mild hybrid and that's basically the engine that's come from the dater duster now the bigsta is going to have three different trim levels expression extreme and journey with extrem and journey being effectively the same kind of range topping but aimed at slightly different Market this car is the extreme version and it's aimed at those people who want to take their car and go out in the wild and get in it with muddy boots and use it as a kind of really practical car and it has
some really clever features so first up it's got roof rails they just look like normal roof rails however very very clever normally with a set of roof rails if you want to put a roof box onto the car you then have to buy a second set of roof bars that clip onto the roof rails and go across the vehicle not in this car you basically pull these little covers up here and here and then there's an allen key bolt and then this swivels to the side and becomes the roof bar and you do the same
on the other side and then you can attach your roof box to these I just think that is genius the next really cool feature I want to show you is down here there's a light nothing special about that but this this is a patented technology or patented feature by datcher called ukp and there are four standard U clip points in the car you can spec more and you get these attachments this is our light this is a mobile phone holder and that means you can place these around the car so for example mobile phone holder
there's a u clip point just there to hold my phone or you got kids in the back and they need their phone holding so clever and the one I really like is just here now I'm going to use the light but they actually do a hook as well so if you I don't know uh outdoor swimming or surfing and you want need to hang up your wet suit to dry it you can just clip it on there that's just brilliant now before we get on to my thoughts of the overall design and styling the last
thing I want to show you is a brand new material it's called starkle it's basically an injection molded plastic but it has a little metallic Fleck in it uh it's not painted it's not treated in any way it just comes out the injection molding like that and it comes down the wheel Arch down the side of the doors and it just gives a real nice rugged look and just a bit of an interesting finish but the technology that went behind making that by all accounts was really really impressive because you've got the little metallic Flex
in it and to enable to mix that in with a plastic and injection mold it and for all the flex not to basically drop to the bottom was really really difficult but I quite like that um and it it just adds to this extreme model anyway to the rugged look of the vehicle the other thing about the extreme model is it comes on allseason tires interestingly there's a different model there's the journey version of this next door and that's actually on michelan eacy tires Unfortunately they decided Ed not to go for the michan crossclimate twos
but never mind now it's safe to say the compact SUV segment is a really competitive one and one of the things that bigsta is going to gain certainly over duster is just that extra size will add to its practicality dust is a brilliant car but it's still quite cramped in the back the boot isn't massive whereas this leg room in the back is much more improved class leading boot space and then also in this spec with the four-wheel drive system system and the manual gearbox truly capable off-road as well but just how big is that
boot well 667 L it's huge now if you go for the journey spec this is then a power tailgate in the extreme it's just manual but what also um you'll find in extreme is there's plastic matting in the boot there's plastic matting on the floors there's WIP clean seats it's much more aimed at getting dogs in the back chucking muddy boots maybe putting a mountain bike you drop the seats in here it is a huge space you'd take the parcel shelf out for sure but yes very very impressive you can drop the seats with a
little flick of the button just here and also you've got some under floor storage as well and a space saver Tire you don't see them very often do you so quick question what do you think this is well first up you think well it's a backpack and it is a backpack but it's also a central armrest that fits in the car so it's basically you can have that as an armrest but then when you're out hiking you can take it with you and carry all your stuff I love the little design tweaks this is clearly
a car that's been designed by people that use the outdoors and love the outdoors we've even got a couple of paddles there H I wonder what they're for quick comment on rear end styling I'm digging it a lot I I there's just something that I think daa what they did they did a bit of a brand refresh and a just a a whole upshift in things they did so the the dater writing there it's a simple thing but that bronze accenting especially against this dark gunmetal metallic paint workor looks fantastic I think the lights I
really like the design of the lights you've got this strip across here it just looks functional it looks cool quirky and yeah I like it so you've got class leading space in the boot class leading space in here there's so much head room so this is the first time dater have put a panoramic glass roof in one of their cars and it looks fantastic really lightens the cabin up now I'm actually sat behind the passenger cuz this is a leftand drive car but I've put this seat as far back as it can go cuz interestingly
for the driver's seat I needed to pull it forward a little bit there's that much leg room I've got a 34 in inside leg so very long legs and I'm sat very comfortably in here there's loads of space I've got a couple of charge points I've got a one of those U connect points just there but I've also which is quite nice I can pull this down now one I can get access into the boot if I needed to I could use this as a ski hatch but I've got a couple of drinks holders there
and also if I was in the back and wanting to do stuff with me mobile phone I can put my mobile phone in there as well which which is quite a neat feature so it's a 40 20 40 split rear seat that's very cool so let's jump into the driver's seat and have a look at the cockpit area and some of the cool technology that we've got in there so we've got reach and tilt adjustment on the steering wheel which is nice straight away that's dropped into a really nice driving position for me guess what
they've borrowed now clearly dat are part of the Renault group and for me Renault currently have one of the most important features there is and this car has it too there is a customizable Adas menu so Adas are all the um safety systems that modern day cars have to have the speed limit warning bong Lane departure assistance and you can go into a menu and you can configure how you want that to be and you can place it all onto a button which is just here and when you get in the car you just have
to double tap that button and it turns on your ads preference so for me that would be speed warning off Lane departure assistant off and I just get in there there's no going into a menu three menus Down Easy Peasy love that feature and in terms of just the the look and the feel I like it it's the kind of car you'd get in and not worry about getting it dirty I love the detailing on the vents that kind of hawks into the daer logo the DC at the front the uh that bronze styling and
there are lots of real buttons for sure there's a touchcreen here with carplay and the things that you would expect but along here you've got a set of real buttons to do your climate control next up one two three pedals you've got a speed manual gearbox in this coupled to a four-wheel drive system now you might not instantly think of dater and off-road capability but I can tell you from experience the dater duster is an incredibly capable off-road vehicle and I've no no reason to doubt that this won't be as well so you've got your
off-road selector switch just here so it's got an eco mode for normal Eco driving Auto it will sort itself out but you've then got a snow mode a sand mode and also a diff lock so depending on how extreme you want your off-roading to be and then in the middle is a hill descent control button so you know if you're and I don't know I guess the most a lot of these cars would do would probably be some sort of heavy green laning maybe brilliant car to do that but it just gives me the vibe
that this is a this is a just a a really well put together vehicle and I like it a lot sadly we can't drive it today but hopefully that will happen very very soon so here's a question how is it that datcher can bring a car to Market like this with so many features on it and so much capability for the price point that they do well the really simple answer is they just focus on what they believe are the essentials that need to be in the car they streamline the manufacturing process they they share
platforms and components across their range so that they can buy in economies of scale and and keep the cost or the bill of materials as low as possible and when we talk about things like Essentials you know that might be features this car doesn't have a power tailgate do you need a power tailgate arguably not you can get one in the in the other spec as I've mentioned already the other thing I think I want to mention is um the last couple of data videos I've done people have commented on the encap ratings that data
were getting uh and saying they weren't getting very good ratings they they can't be very safe and the truth of the matter is the essentials are approach so for example um they didn't used to have a a bong when you didn't connect the rear seat belt so if you had a rear seat passenger and the you hadn't got a seat belt on a lot of cars will have an audible warning for the driver to let them know that's the case actually didn't put that in because they didn't feel it was essential unfortunately when you do
the endcap rating that's one of the things that you have to have and if you don't have it you get marked down in the end cap test it's nothing to do with the the crash structure or how How likely you are to survive an accident if you crash one of these it's just because it didn't tick one of the boxes that had to have a particular system so I think that's a very very interesting approach but one of the things that's very noticeable when you walk Round Here is you would therefore think if they're only
putting the essentials in you'd feel short Changed by the car and you don't you sit in it and there are things in this that I've not seen in other cars the UK clip technology is brilliant the movable um roof rails brilliant bit of design very kind of very similar to the the skod mentality as well just someone's designed this car and actually thought about the person that's going to use it what they're likely to use it for and the kind of things that they need in that car and I absolutely love that about data now
I've just quickly jumped in the journey specification car that's in the next Bay to the one we were filming in because this is an auto and the interior looks very different clearly the dash and the screens are the same but you've got this r center console with the auto gear changer you've got some drinks here and you've even got a cool cabinet to keep your chocolate bars drinks cool I think that's really cool it amazes me essential stuff yet that actually on a hot day that would be essential but yes very similar in here the
difference though is we've now got carpets we've got more textured materials instead of the white clean that's in the extreme version it just feels a little bit bit more like this would be the kind of car if you were using this mainly on the road as a you know going to work longer Journeys you weren't going kind of outdoory type activities you'd probably go for this spec and they're the same price point um the the journey in the extreme but yeah it's nice it's still got the pan roof this one has a power tailgate and
it's also on Michelin e Primacy tires but yeah it's nice in here final thoughts on the dater big well first up from a design point of view I really like it I think it looks very cool really rugged it's the kind of car that ticks lots of boxes for me I can kind of see in my lifestyle this car being used on a daily basis taking the dogs to the beach putting my bikes in the back putting a roof box on the back and going for a bit of an explore it's that kind of vehicle
really the difficult things on these Studio shoots is I've got no understanding of what the drivve train going to be like um I can imagine it's going to be competent just like the other vehicles in the daer range but I can't really comment on it I can't comment on things like road noise or ride quality they're important factors when you're buying a car but the initial impressions in terms of design on the outside I like it a lot um I love the little design features on the inside uh the dash looks well laid out I
like the button that you can configure to turn all the systems off the driving position feels nice and comfortable you've got a lot of adjustment in the steering wheel there's a huge amount of space in the front and in the back and in the boot so very practical there's lots of Headroom so it feels big and Airy helped by the pan roof and all in all a really exciting car but it's so refreshing to come to do a car launch where it's a car that I honestly feel is an affordable car for a normal family
you're a family with a couple of kids you got lots of luggage you not going to have a budget of50 60 £70,000 you could look at one of these £30,000 there or thereabouts depending on trim speec is going to be a little bit less than that or maybe a little bit more than that but still in today's mad car price world I think that is exceptional value and honestly as I've said already you don't feel short changed you don't feel like you're driving round in the old days when you had like the base spec of
a car there was nothing in it no toys to play with at all no luxuries or Comfort that's just not the case with that car and for me I love that and that a big tick for dater I tell you what though I'd love to take it off-road I'd love to take it to slindon and and just try and see what it's like off-roading you know you could put maybe a set of off-road tires on there and get it really really muddy anyway please put in the comments below what do you think of the new
