tonight the breaking news hurricane Francine makes landfall as a category 2 storm battering Louisiana I'm just praying and ask the Lord to protect [Music] us plus the candidates for president together at a 9/11 Memorial honoring the nearly 3,000 killed 23 years ago and shaking hands just hours after their first debate and wildfires out west Scorch more than 100,000 acres what we are learning about a man arrested for arson in one of the state's biggest blazes the CBS Evening News starts now good evening I'm Margaret Brandon in for Nora odonnell we begin with the breaking news
hurricane Francine just coming ashore making landfall in Louisiana with wind gusts over 100 mph hour Relentless storm surge of 5 to 10 ft is inundating the coastline and Beyond into Mississippi and Alabama and the worst is still to come in the hours ahead as the powerful storm lashes New Orleans as much as a foot of rain may fall over the next 12 hours as the storm moves Inland evacuation orders and curfews are in effect cbs's Dave maloff reports from the Impact Zone in Southern Louisiana good evening to you Dave hey there Margaret you can see
that we are being pushed around look how the debris is coming off of these trees back here and pieces are being ripped off it's crazy to think of this as being the not most violent part of the storm the most violent part of the storm is in the ey wall and that is yet to come we have about an hour before that pushes past us right here in h Louisiana most violent part of this storm is just minutes away areas of terone Parish this morning at Rouse's supermarket in h carts were loaded and registers were
ringing guys we minut this was their last chance to get supplies shaita streams wants to keep her kids distracted and busy we got toys and like you know playing things for the kids I even bought some little school practice books I'm just hoping everything just go smooth everybody be safe with police and fire we have communications Public Works utilities tabone Paris president Jason beeron brought us into the Emergency Operations Center we have our pump system on this TV in the back back here right now the levies are holding but the water is rising are there
still people beyond the levy system who are staying behind I would not doubt there are the ground is saturated water and as the levy system is closed that water has a harder time getting out except for some areas that have some pumps New Orleans could get as much as 10 in of rain putting the city's water pumps and drainage system to the test even vintage street cars were taken out of service and moved to protected areas stay inside hunker down now is the time between now as well as moving into midnight and New Orleans is
45 miles away from us here so you see how widespread the damage in something like this can spread across a geographic area we still have some time to go because the eyewall will pass over us then the eye and then the bottom part of the eyewall and there is still a lot of activity Margaret in the Atlantic Basin right now so hurricane season still has a ways to go Dave maloff you stay safe thank you for the latest track on Hurricane Francine let's bring in cbs's Lonnie Quinn good evening to you Lonnie what is the
biggest danger heading into this evening I think we're talking about storm surge and fresh flooding it's going to be the signature of the storm yeah you saw the winds out there where Dave is and there could very well be some 90 to 100 mph gusts where he is around home also some pretty decent winds around New Orleans as well but we're going to test those levies all right they they survived fine during Ida four years ago that was their first test this will be the second test as that storm pushes on Shore So currently the
northern portion of the eyewall is Inland but the southern portion of the eyewall it's not as strong but it has yet to make its way through for a place like duac that's in the eye right now you are going to get those winds bumped up in about 20 minutes or so as it moves Inland it's going to quickly weaken by the time you get to tomorrow it's in the process of weakening as it pushes towards hesburger storm and then by probably tomorrow night you're looking at a tropical depression but it's still putting down a lot
of rain for a place like Memphis well to the north of where landfall is going to be Memphis could see 4 to 6 Ines of rain but around New Orleans in the coastal areas I think 5 to 10 is going to be a pretty decent number that's going to be widespread throughout that area that's the very latest it's all yours Margaret all right L I know you'll stay on top of it all we go now out to the west where those wildfires have been ravaging Southern California police arrested an arson suspect that they believe sparked
one of three large blazes in the state two of which have exploded in size over the last 24 hours as cbs's Ben Tracy shows us dozens of homes have been destroyed the so-called airport fire took a dramatic turn overnight torching homes and vehicles as it barreled its way along the border of Orange County residents managed to Escape The Inferno which has now burn more than 23,000 Acres the thought about being burnt alive is is nuts Federico Selenas returned to find his home and animals were spared but not much else this whole neighborhood is gone what
do you make of this uh it's scary it really is in the mountains above Los Angeles the bridge fire rapidly grew 12 times its size in less than a day and took aim at the community of rightwood to see a fire that's burning 40,000 acres in 24 hours it's not an understatement when we say this fire exploded into town the wind driven Flames destroyed at least 39 homes in Cabins this woman was among those rescued a popular ski resort was also threatened we have active fire on both sides of this Canyon but the heat that
exists in the fuel that's still out there presents a very real risk to all of these communities meantime authorities have arrested and charged 34-year-old Justin Holsten BG for allegedly starting the line that has ravaged close to 35,000 Acres officials say the investigation is not over it's my belief that we will actually find out this suspect may have been responsible for other fires here in California wildfires have already burned three times as many acres as last year and Margaret we are just entering the height of wildfire season indeed Ben Tracy thank you well vice president kamla
Harris and former president Donald Trump had a brief but respectful exchange today with a somber handshake at the ground zero ceremony to honor the victims of the deadliest terrorist attack in American history hours earlier the two faced off for their first debate showing their very different views on America's present and future cbs's Edo Keef brings us the latest less than 12 hours after stepping off the debate stage vice president Harris and former president Donald Trump cross paths again in lower Manhattan today as the nation marked 23 years since the 9/11 attacks the Harris team is
pushing for the two contenders to meet again in October but Trump who repeatedly fell into rhetorical trap set by Harris today said he's not so sure I think that uh are we going to do a rematch I just don't know we'll think about it the former president tried to dismiss the surprise endorsement of Harris late Tuesday by pop star Swift who has 283 million followers on Instagram she'll prob probably pay a price for it at the uh in the marketplace Swift cited Harris's choice of running mate Tim Walls and his standing up for a woman's
right to her own body during the debate Harris attacked Trump for nominating Supreme Court Justices that helped end Federal protections for abortion rights the government and Donald Trump certainly should not be telling a woman what to do with her body all the two candidates sparred over the economy and inflation Donald Trump left us the worst unemployment since the Great Depression she doesn't have a plan she copied Biden's plan and it's like four sentences like Run Spot Run Trump made several false statements like claiming millions of undocumented immigrants are Crossing into the country each month that
the Biden Administration has had perhaps the highest inflation rate in the nation's history and that Haitian immigrants are eating pet in the City of Springfield Ohio in Springfield they're eating the dogs the people that came in they're eating the cats they're eating they're eating the pets of the people that live there a Springfield City official has disputed those claims you're talk about extreme on a split screen Harris's facial reactions often said what she couldn't with a muted microphone at one point she called out what world leaders think of trump and it is absolutely well known
that these dictators and autocrats are rooting for you to be president again because they're so clear they can manipulate you with flattery and favors Harris also looked to provoke him by criticizing his rallies you will see during the course of his rallies he talks about fictional characters like Hannibal Lecter he will talk about windmills cause cancer and what you will also notice is that people start leaving his rallies early out of exhaustion and boredom people don't go to her rallies there's no reason to go we have the biggest rallies the most incredible rallies in the
history of politics so with 55 days to go Harris is headed to North Carolina tomorrow while Trump is heading west to Arizona as for another possible debate Trump is publicly skeptical but both teams are in talks with networks about a second encounter and interest remains High more than 57 million people watched last night Margaret more than watched the first debate back in June what did they learn and were their mindes changed Ed will have to to be continued exactly exactly there is good news for your wallet tonight inflation eased up last month the labor department
says consumer Prices rose 2 and a half% in August from a year prior that's the smallest increase since early 2021 but as Joe Ling Kent reports some prices remain stubbornly high for businesses like Barcade easing inflation is welcome news but keeping the lights on is still stubbornly expensive we're running 75 plus arcade games over 80 hours a week while overall inflation cooled in August expenses like rent and electricity continue to heat up fast how much has your electricity bill been here compared to a few months ago it's gone up about 10% in the last 4
months we spent $19,700 on our electricity bill so uh we changed our business hours we had to really look at when are our Peak business times and you have to work around that restaurant prices also Rose 4% over the last year something general manager Neu Romani does not want to pass on to customers we make things from scratch here instead to save money to save not just to save money but to put out a better product economists predict today's inflation numbers all but guarantee the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates next week amazing amazing as
Barcade Powers through we're going to do everything that we can to make sure it succeeds in this economy it's hard but we're doing our best winners here let's go although prices do remain stubbornly high in some areas there are several bright spots in this inflation report today gas prices dropped more than 10% compared to a year ago used car and truck prices also went down more than 10% Margaret thank you Joe Lang well a hero pilot in the cockpit when part of that plane blew off that Alaska Airlines flight is now telling her story for
the first time we'll tell you how her training kept passengers safe in a CBS exclusive next one of the hero Pilots aboard that Alaska Airlines plane that had a door blowout mid-flight in January is now speaking out for the first time tonight about those terrifying moments cbs's Chris Van Cleave has the exclusive interview alas to declaring emergency Alaska Airlines pilot Emily Whi sounded the alarm something had gone terribly wrong the first indication was it was an explosion in my ears and then a whoosh of air my body was forced forward and there was a loud
bang did you know at this point there was a hole in the airplane no I didn't know that there was a hole in the airplane until we landed we just depressurized if suddenly turn 10,000 I would need to return back to Portland it was so incredibly loud and I remember putting the oxygen mask on and trying to transmit to ATC and wondering why can't I hear anything a door panel on the Boeing 737 Max had blown out with enough Force to rip off her headset but Whi rot says their training took over as the two
pilots worked to safely land and I opened the flight deck door and I saw calm quiet hundreds of eyes staring right back at me and I looked at my flight attendants and I said are you okay and in that response I heard whole four five empty seats and and injuries and are you thinking when they said empty seats that you'd lost people yes and I remember it not taking very long for us to confirm we had 177 Souls on board that had to be an emotional roller coaster yeah I was so thankful I was in
shock I disbelief everybody was there whiper rud is back on the flight deck telling us it was very important for her to get back in the saddle she and her Captain will be honored tomorrow by the airline pilots Association for safely Landing that damaged plane Margaret an amazing story Chris thank you for bringing it to us we'll be right [Music] back a surge in Haitian migrants to Springfield Ohio is straining the local community and the governor there is now asking for federal help most of the 15,000 Haitians who fled there in the past 4 years
are hardworking people escaping violence the governor said but that's not how former president Trump described them last night and tonight's eye on America cbs's Lilia Luciano visits Springfield and shares what she learned at this community center Haitian immigrants get food clothes and help finding work they're here and they're our responsibility Casey Rollins who runs the St Vincent depal society says the supplies are an open-armed welcome from this community for Asylum Seekers especially from Haiti fleeing violence and starvation from a country and collapse work they want work they always want work they want work they work
three jobs they work they just never stop working but when it comes to immigration Springfield has become tense since last August when a minivan driven by a Haitian immigrant without a valid license collided head-on with the school bus killing 11-year-old Aiden Clark we're not taking anymore that are driving erratically around town I want to know who's busing a in who's responsible for that and who can stop them from coming and last night former president Donald Trump poured fuel on local grievances with a baseless conspiracy theory the people that came in they're eating the cats they're
eating they're eating the pets of the people that live there the claims are Falls but the pain in the community has been real for a while for myself a little bit worried I'm afraid to because you know uh life you are the one to be protect first your life and when thing happen like that that make me very afraid we try every single day to make us better and when you make us better the neighborhood going to be better the the city going to be better Springfield was once a manufacturing Hub since 20 thousand jobs
have dropped by nearly half and while Haitian immigrants most of whom have temporary protected status and War permits have been blamed for stealing jobs there are more than enough Jobs business owners like job recruiter Alex Mueller see their presence as vital they've been very welcoming they've been very kind uh and they're very grateful to have the opportunity to provide for themselves and their families it's a complicated issue that can't be divided along political lines the last thing that we need is to have the worst day of Our Lives violently and constantly shoved in our faces
Nathan Clark understands that more than anyone using Aiden as a political tool is to say the least reprehensible it was his son who was killed a year ago in the bus crash my son Aiden Clark was not murdered he was accidentally killed by an immigrant from Haiti this tragedy is felt all over this community the state and even the nation but don't spin this towards hate in campaign talk there's often no room for nuance but to understand immigration in this town and this country Nuance is essential for ION America lelia Luciano Springfield Ohio a uniquely
New York tribute to the heroes of the September 11th attacks that's next this portion of the CBS Evening News is sponsored by IAH HD finally tonight's Heart of America as the nation remembers those killed 23 years ago today and those who died in the months and years that followed the walls of Honor campaign in partnership with the Feelgood Foundation hopes to raise awareness and money for medical needs for Heroes still fighting 911 related illnesses and they're doing it in a uniquely New York way by by putting up pictures on the walls of local pizzer Ras
these people probably would have given their lives and to understand that New York really it's one community no matter where you come from the heroes of September 11th are tonight's Heart of America and that is tonight's CBS Evening News for Nora odonnell I'm Margaret Brandon have a good night
