should Christians practice cremation when they die in today's discussion we will tackle a question the both Christians and non-christians often ask is cremation an acceptable practice for Christians we'll explore what happens to those who are cremated when it's time for the resurrection part one what does the Bible say about cremation the Bible does not give Specific Instructions about cremation in the Old Testament there are instances where people were scorched to death First Kings 16:18 2 Kings 21:6 and where human bones were charred 2 Kings 23: 16-20 however these events are not examples of cremation for
instance in 2 Kings 23: 16-20 burning human bones on an altar was considered blasphemy yet the Old Testament law does not command against burning a deceased human body nor does it attach a curse or Jud judgement to Cremation cremation was practiced during Biblical times but it was not a common practice among the Israelites or new testament Believers typically people were buried in tombs caves or in the ground we see examples of this in Genesis 23: 19 where Sarah was buried and in Matthew 27: 60-66 where Jesus was laid in a tomb despite burial being the
common method the Bible does not command burial as the only acceptable way to dispose of a body can Christians consider cremation there is no clear command in scripture against it some Christians oppose cremation because they believe it does not honor the future resurrection of the body it's stated in 1 Corinthians Chapter 15: 35- 58 and 1 Thessalonians 4:16 however cremation does not prevent God from resurrecting the body God created our bodies and can easily recreate them whether they have turned to dust over time or were cremated cremation simply speeds up the process of turning a
body into dust God is able to raise someone's remains regardless of whether they were cremated or buried historically the question of cremation versus burial did not arise often burial was the standard practice often referred to as a Christian burial cremation was mostly associated with other cultures or ancient Tales like those of the Vikings but time have changed especially in the west cremation has become more common and less strange scripture shows us the dignity and importance of the human body for example 1 Corinthians 6: 19-2 says do you not know that your body is a temple
of the Holy Spirit within you whom you have from God you are not your own you were bought with a price so glorify God in your body this verse highlights that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit and were bought in at a great price we are to honor God with our bodies even in death they will one day be resurrected and transformed to be like Jesus's glorified body who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious Body by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself Philippians 3:
21 the Bible does not prohibit cremation burial the only option a Christian can consider people who support cremation give various reasons to explain why it's okay for Christians to choose this method one of the main arguments is that fire symbolizes the presence of God William Fitz a supporter of cremation points out that in biblical times fire often symbolized God's presence for example God appeared to Abraham as a flaming torch and on Mount siani the glory of the Lord was like a devouring fire Exodus chapter 24:1 17 since fire represents God cremation can be seen as
a symbol of of the believer entering into God's presence another argument is that Jesus gave little attention to how the dead should be disposed of fips notes that Jesus mentioned Let the dead bury their own dead Luke 9:60 suggesting that Jesus did not place a high importance on burial furthermore Jesus criticized the Pharisees for being like whitewashed tombs which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men's bones and everything unclean Matthew 23: 27 fips also argues that the Apostle Paul deemphasized the importance of the body after death Paul described
the body as a temple of the Holy Spirit but he also referred to it as an Earthly tent that would be demolished after use Paul expressed a preference to be away from the body and at home with the Lord he stated that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God 1 Corinthians 15: 50 and it speak leads up the natural process of returning to dust as mentioned in Genesis 3: 19 however there are responses to these arguments that support the practice of burial while fire can symbolize God's presence it is more commonly associated with
judgment in the Bible burning a human body can evoke images of judgment or human sacrifices which are negative associations regarding Jesus's view just because Jesus gave little direct attention to to the disposal of the Dead does not imply its unimportance Jesus upheld the authority of scripture which expresses the common practice and importance of burial when Jesus said let the dead bury their own dead Luke 9:60 he was making a point about spiritual priorities not giving instructions on burial practices Paul's theology did not devalue the dead body he never taught that a dead body should be
despised or destroyed his emphasis on the living body as the temp Le of the Holy Spirit does not mean the dead body is without value Paul's Jewish background which practiced An approved burial influenced his views in 1 Corinthians 15:42 Paul uses the analogy of a seed being swn which reflects the burial of a body that will be raised imperishable it is sown a natural body mortal suited to Earth it is raised a spiritual body Immortal suited to Heaven as surely as there is a physical body there is also a spiritual body 1 Corinthians 15:44 Paul's
references to a spiritual body indicate a body dominated by the spirit not devoid a physical substance the term spiritual refers to the source of the body's power not to its material nature Paul's discussion about the resurrection body does not suggest that the physical body is unimportant but that it will be transformed there is a significant reason for Christians to prefer burial over cremation the human body even in death is respected and preserved as a symbol of the future Resurrection Christianity teaches that our bodies bought by the blood of Jesus will be raised and glorified Romans
8:1 says and if the spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who lives in you this this highlights the Christian belief that after death our bodies will be brought back to life in a perfect form no matter how they were at the time of death therefore even though some Christians might consider cremation burying the dead remains a very important tradition that reflects the main beliefs of Christianity about rising from the dead and
life after death Dignity of the human body the Bible places great importance on the human body both in this life and the life to come unlike Greek philosophy which view the body as a prison for the soul Christianity sees the body as essential to full Humanity the afterlife is not just about the Soul's immortality but about the resurrection of the body in eternal life this perspective significantly influences the Christian approach to the treatment of the body after death Paul expresses that the intermediate state where the soul is without the body it's not ideal in 2
Corinthians 5:4 he writes for while we are in this tent we groan being burdened not because we want to be unclothed but to be clothed so that what is Mortal may be swallowed up by life this shows that the body is essential and the ultimate hope is the resurrection when the body is glorified and perfected the greatest demonstration of the Dignity of the human body is the Incarnation of Jesus Christ the Eternal Son of God took on human flesh and continues to have a glorified body in heaven and the word Christ became flesh and lived
among us and we saw his glory glory as of the only begotten son from the father full of grace and truth John 1:14 Jesus's bodily resurrection and Ascension affirmed the Eternal value of the human body who by exerting that power which enables him even to subject everything to himself will not only transform but completely refashion our Earthly bodies so that they will be like his glorious Resurrection body Philippians 3: 21 this transformation signifies the highest elevation of the human body's dignity and Glory Paul further elaborates on the sacredness of the body in this life in
1 Corinthians 6: 19-2 he writes do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is within you whom you have received as a gift from God and that you are not your own property you were bought with a price you were actually purchased with the precious blood of Jesus and made his own so then honor and glorify God with your body here Paul emphasizes four unique truths number one our bodies are the Temple of the Holy Spirit number two Christ's death purchased us including our bodies for himself number three
our bodies do not belong to us they belong to God number four we should use our bodies to glorify God these truths highlight that our bodies are not meant for final destruction but for resurrection and eternal glory will Jesus raise the cremated the question of whether Jesus will raise those who have been cremated at his second coming is a common one among Christians to address this we must first acknowledge that the Bible does not give explicit instructions or commands regarding cremation however we can find some guidance through biblical principles and a broader understanding of God's
power and promises you return to the ground for out of it you were taken for you are dust and to dust you shall return Genesis 3: 19 this verse indicates that our physical bodies came from dust and will return to dust after death whether through natural decomposition or creation the focus is not on preserving our physical bodies but on the fact that we will return to dust throughout history bodies have decayed naturally turning back into dust which is essentially the same end State as cream when Jesus returns he will perform the miracle of Resurrection transforming
countless bodies no matter their state this includes those who have been cremated God's power is not limited by the condition of our physical remains he created the universe and has the power to raise the dead regardless of whether their bodies were buried or cremated historically cremation was practiced in biblical times but it was not the norm among Israelites or new testament believers burial was more common with bodies laid to rest in tombs caves or the ground as was the case with Jesus some Christians believe that cremation might hinder Resurrection they refer to 1 Corinthians 15:
35- 55 it is the same way with the resurrection of the Dead our Earthly bodies are planted in the ground when we die but they will be raised to live forever our bodies are buried in Brokenness but they will be raised in glory they are buried in weakness but they will be raised in strength they are buried as natural human bodies but they will be raised as spiritual bodies for just as there are natural bodies there are also spiritual bodies this passage emphasizes that are Earthly bodies whether buried or cremated will be transformed into glorious
spiritual bodies at the Resurrection the state of the physical body at death does not limit God's ability to resurrect it those who died thousands of years ago are now more than dust similar to Cremation yet they too will be resurrected so Christians shouldn't worry too much about cremation when it comes to Resurrection what's really important is believing in Jesus Christ and looking forward to eternal life because of his power to bring people back to life the belief in God's all powerful nature means that nothing not even being turned into ashes can stop his promise of
eternal life and bringing people back to life if they believe this idea helps people feel at ease and takes away any fear of cremation regarding what happens after we die the choice between cremation and burial Falls within Christian Freedom it's a personal decision that should be made with the support of loved ones the Bible assures us that God's power extends beyond the physical condition of our remains promising a resurrection for all believers can you still go to heaven if you were cremated another one of the most frequently asked questions today is whether someone can still
go to heaven if they were cremated this concern arises because the majority of people who die in America are now cremated rather than buried some Pagan Nations throughout history have practiced cremation raising concerns that cremation might interfere with God's plan for bodily resurrection and deny a cremated person eternal life in God's new Heaven and new earth however if someone belongs to Jesus Christ and is cremated this act will prevent their Resurrection for several reasons firstly many people have suffered experiences equivalent to Cremation as victims it would be unjust to punish victims for circumstances beyond their
control secondly some regions have such scarce land that generations of burial are impractical Japan is an example where land for burial is limited thirdly many people are cremated without their choice as someone else made the decision after they died it it would be unfair to hold someone responsible for a decision they did not make fourthly the Bible does not specifically state that cremation is a sin like it does for other sins such as murder stealing or lying some argue that since pagans in the Bible practice cremation it is sinful references include 1st Samuel 31: 11-13
when the inhabitants of jabish Gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul all the Valiant men got up and traveled all night and took the bodies of Saul and his sons from the wall of bethshan and they came to jabesh and burned them there then they took their bones and buried them under the Tamaris tree of jabesh and fasted for seven days it is notable that even in this instance the act of cremation was not condemned but rather it was the care and respect for the leaders and the subsequent Memorial that was emphasized this
suggests that what matters most is the reverence and dignity with which we treat the dead rather than the method of body disposal ultimately it is not the physical condition of our remains but the condition of our soul that determines our eligibility for heaven Amos 2:1 thus says the Lord for three transgressions of Moab and for four multiply delinquencies I shall not reverse its punishment or revoke my word concerning it because he burned the bones of the king of Edom to Lime in this instance the Judgment was upon disrespect shown to the enemy's remains emphasizing the
importance of dignity in death not the act of burning itself thus the focus should remain not on the method of our Earthly remains disposal but on living a life that is pleasing to God preparing our souls for the eternal life to come as Christians we must remember that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit and treat them with respect yet it is the condition of our hearts and the Deeds of Our Lives that Define our relationship with God Amos 6: 8-10 the Lord God has sworn in Oath by himself the Lord God of hosts
says I loathe and reject the false pride of Jacob Israel and I hate his idolatrous palaces and citadels therefore I shall hand over the city Samaria and everything that is in it even if cremation is considered a sin Jesus died for all sins and his sacrifice covers cremation moreover a buried body eventually decomposes to a state similar to Cremation Ecclesiastes 12:7 says then the dust out of which God made man's body will return to the Earth as it was and the spirit will return to God who gave it God made the first human body from
the dust of the earth Genesis 2:7 says then the Lord God formed that is created the body of man from the dust of the ground and breathed breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and the Man became a living being an individual complete in body and spirit the same God promises to remake Resurrection bodies from the dust Daniel 12:2 says many of those who sleep in the dust of the ground will awake resurrect these to everlasting life but some to disgrace in Everlasting contempt abhorrence this assurance means that those who have been cremated will
still receive the resurrect res rection bodies just as God formed the first human from the dust of the earth he has the power to bring forth Resurrection bodies from any state including cremated remains this process is not hindered by cremation Philippians 3: 2 through 21 but we are different because our citizenship is in heaven and from there we eagerly await the coming of the Savior the Lord Jesus Christ who by exerting that power which enables him even to subject everything to himself will not only transform but completely refashion our Earthly bodies so that they will
be like his glorious resurrected body this change shows the endless power and detailed the tension of God it sends a strong message of Hope and New Beginnings that goes beyond the physical world or situations no matter if our bodies go back to the Earth or are changed by fire the hope for Resurrection stays the same this keeps alive the belief in a life after this one a life where our physical limits don't control Us in this future we're promised the temporary nature of our bodies now is exchanged for a NeverEnding perfect State without pain sadness
or breaking down this highlights how deep Divine love is and gives us solid hope for eventual healing and renewal 1 Corinthians 15: 42-44 so it is with the resurrection of the Dead the human body that is sown is perishable Immortal it is raised imperishable and Immortal it is sown in dishonor it is raised in glory it is sown in weakness it is raised in strength it is swn a natural body mortal suited to Earth it is raised a spiritual body Immortal suited to Heaven as surely as there is a physical body there is also a
spiritual body this means that no matter the state of the body at death whether buried decomposed or cremated God will transform it into a glorified Resurrection body the the act of cremation does not limit God's ability to fulfill his promises for those who trust in Jesus Christ the hope of Resurrection is secure their faith ensures that they will be part of God's Eternal plan irrespective of how their Earthly body is treated after death 1 Thessalonians 4: 16-17 for the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a shout of command with the voice of the
Archangel and with the blast of the trumpet of God and the dead in Christ will rise first first then we who are alive and remain on the earth will simultaneously be caught up raptured together with them the resurrected ones in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air and so we will always be with the Lord Revelation 21:4 and he will wipe away every tear from their eyes and there will no longer be death there will no longer be sorrow and anguish or crying or pain for the former Order of Things has passed away
the Bible's message is clear faith in Jesus Christ is the determining factor for eternal life with God not the method of handling a deceased body Romans chapter 10: 9-10 says because if you acknowledge and confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord recognizing his Power Authority and Majesty as God and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved for with the heart a person believes in Christ as Savior resulting in his justification that is being made righteous being freed of the guilt of sin and made acceptable to God
and with the mouth he acknowledges and confesses his faith openly resulting in and confirming his salvation therefore whether someone is buried or cremated what matters is their relationship with Jesus Christ the promise of resurrection and eternal life is assured for all who belong to him
