- [Instructor] Does protecting your kids on the internet feel complicated, exhausting, and not always as effective as it needs to be? Let me help you change that. I'm going to discuss how you can protect your kids online, monitor their screen time and set up helpful parental controls in ways that are both simple and effective.
First of all, educate your kids about the online world. Sadly, one of the most common dangers on the net is cyberbullying. Discuss with your kids what causes cyber bullying and let them know they can always be open about it.
Kids also need to be aware of stranger danger online just as they are in the real world. You can try to hang out online together by playing games, watching funny videos and show them how to recognize online dangers. Alternatively, you can use filters to block inappropriate content.
There are several ways to do this, for YouTube, switch on restricted mode. This stops all mature or age restricted content from showing, or you can install the YouTube kids app on mobile and TV. This provides curated YouTube content that's oriented towards children.
Inappropriate videos are filtered out and you can tailor the app with parental controls to suit your household. Both of these options are free. Internet safety apps are a good option for blocking adult or suspicious websites.
In fact, some of these apps can also do tasks like limiting screen time, blocking or limiting specific apps or tracking your child's physical location. Net Nanny, Qustodio and Safe Eyes are examples of reliable, easy to use parental control software that you can buy. Some tools like KidLooger and Kaspersky safe kids have awesome free plans.
Another way to block inappropriate websites while making sure that there's lots of fun and educational content available is to install a kid-friendly browser. Kids safe browsers only allow pre-approved games and sites, and you can edit the list of approved sites to. KidRex and Kiddle are good free kid safe browsers while Kidsplorer and Pikluk are quality paid options that offer free versions or trials.
Block apps that aren't child friendly. Installing app lock software on shared devices stops your kids. from accessing your banking, shopping or social media media apps.
This software asks for a password, pattern or sometimes even biometric authentication before users can open specified apps. There are lots of good app lock options available on Google Play and the App Store. Here's how to install and use an app lock on Android, pick one of these apps, then hit the button to download and install.
Open the software, tap the add button and select the apps you want to lock. Then, set an app password or lock pattern. The process is similar on iOS.
You can pick any of these app locks from the App Store. Social media is possibly one of the biggest dangers for kids on the internet. Most social platforms have age restrictions, but there are a few apps that offer social media for children.
Kids can post updates or send messages, but no inappropriate content is allowed. Friends need to be approved by parents and there are other solid parental controls available. It's also important to be able to limit the amount of time your child spends gaming or watching videos.
Online skills are important, but real world physical skills are essential for your child's development and creativity too. A lot of parental controls software lets you control how much time your child spends on certain apps. Other software is specifically designed to limit screen time.
Set up a child account on your PC. This lets you section off a part of your computer for your child and conveniently use unique settings, request activity reports, blocking inappropriate websites, limit apps and games and set the times that your child can use the device. Here's how to set up an online safety children account on Windows 10.
Open settings, select accounts, then choose family and other people. Under your family, click on, add a family member. Pick add a child.
You'll need to add an email address and confirm the account via your child's email. If your child doesn't have an email address, you will be guided through the process of creating a Microsoft account. You can manage account settings from the Microsoft family safety site.
Here's how to create a child's account on Mac. Go to the Apple menu, select system preferences, then users and groups. Click on the lock icon to unlock admin access and enter the admin password and name, hit the plus button under the accounts column.
Under new account, choose managed with parental controls. Then fill in the fields and accept the changes. To edit the parental controls, select your child's account and click on open parental controls.
Using a VPN protects the whole family. It can keep you and your family totally anonymous on the web. It can prevent online predators from stalking your kids and uncovering their identities.
Stop hackers from taking over the camera or microphone on your child's device and protect the whole family on unsecure public wifi, which is a notorious hotspot for online attacks. A VPN protects your privacy by hiding your details away in a complex code and then routing your traffic through a server in a different location. Your true location stays hidden.
Most VPNs allow you to use several devices on one account, but if you and your kids have lots of devices, you may want to install the VPN on your router. This protects all the devices that access your internet connection. Parents, you should know that although cybersecurity software helps to protect your kids from some threats, the most important online safety measure is to keep the lines of communication open with your kids.
Encourage them to talk to you whenever they experience an issue online, no matter how marginal it may appear to you or them. What are your experiences with kids on the net? Please share your thoughts and feelings with me down in the comments.
