all right so it's been a very long awaited video uh if you don't know me i don't really do youtube videos ever but i didn't feel like i could make this fit into a three minute tik tok video or whatever i think it's really important to talk about so basically my name is jared schult i'm 19 years old and last year i went to a school called oral roberts university and now i do not go to that school i just transferred to texas a m university giggum uh and i just kind of wanted to go
over why i went why i left kind of what my experience was mainly just to help somebody if they're trying to think about going because my experience was not exactly awesome so the first thing that is big there um that i think i want to start with is there's an honor code and i can't really get mad about this one because i knew it going in at the time i was like fully subscribed to that kind of belief so i was cool with it it's like honor code so first of all we had a curfew
at 1am which is not like the biggest deal ever it's like okay fine 1am right uh then we can never have girls in our in dorms ever like throughout all four years had to live in dorms could never have girls in them also if i'm looking down it's because i got notes over here because i can't remember all this uh also we had a 50 dollar fine 50 if he missed the chapel service so one of my friends her grandpa literally died and then she missed two chapels and they find her 100 and when she
appealed it they just said oh you didn't have a doctor's note so the only way you can miss chapel is they have a doctor's note apparently so that was interesting um cussing could lead to disciplinary action which i mean it's a christian university so i get it whatever we had to wear pants for class so once again not a huge deal but can get annoying no alcohol on or off campus regardless if you're 21 or not and that includes staff so if you're 60 years old you're a professor and you want to have a glass
of wine at dinner you'd be going against university policy if you did that um no sexual promiscuity so like obviously no premarital sex but then also they make sure to include on there no homosexual activity no social dancing on campus or like sponsoring it it's like you could technically go dance off campus somewhere but you can't if you're planning an event you can't say it's like an oru dance which they don't want their name in it sure fine uh but then here's the one that was crazy it says this is like straight up from it
says students may not frequent or work at places of entertainment or other places the nature reputation of the university could be like discredited and then students who disobey these rules are subject to automatic suspension like that's wild so for me i went to like a country dancing place because i thought it was fun you know i mean i didn't talk about it a whole lot because i knew it would be like looked down upon but the fact that i could get suspended for that it's kind of wild um so like that was kind of the
honor code for some people that's enough for them to be like hell no i'm not going there uh but whatever so here are the university beliefs kind of things that the university core values that kind of thing so nobody can get hired to be at over right over you unless they speak in tongues so tongues it's like if you're not a like christian it's kind of like a spiritual thing where you're speaking a different language it's very like debated upon topic even amongst christianity but they make it very pivotal there uh because a lot of
beliefs are kind of centered around the theology of oral roberts who was like a big televangelist who's also very controversial and i don't agree with a lot of it in my opinion because unlike the 80s he locked himself into like the big tower on campus and he said god told me i must raise eight million dollars by march 31st or i will die and that's not like i didn't make that up because we had to read a book written by him for class and he wrote about that in his book and i took that quote
from his book so like there's some credibility but that's just whatever so like that's kind of prosperity gospel is like a big thing there they may not like identify with that but that's kind of a thing that's big in that direction i'm not going to get into whether or not i believe in that whatever that's irrelevant just know that going in in 2013 so our current president he told the basketball coach that he couldn't recruit any non-christian players or anyone that had tattoos which i think is kind of odd like in 2013 we're still staying
you can't have anyone without tattoos so like moral of the story our basketball team was awful which makes sense also nobody with tattoos can be on any on camera with anything ever you sponsored so like if you have a tattoo on your arm you either can't be on or you got to cover it and i just thought that was a little interesting in the 70s i really had a weight limit policy i'm not going to get all the way into that uh in 2008 there's a whole scandal with will roberts son richard roberts if you
want to get into that do your own research um there's also like different rumors about like the belief system that i can't necessarily are for sure true the kind of things you hear about when you talk to people who are involved in administration one of those gambling used to be against the honor code up until 2018 when allegedly one of the casinos it's in tulsa oklahoma so one of the casinos started donating money to oral roberts and to university and so then magically it just disappeared off the honor code and said you just can't gamble
on campus which is kind of odd but whatever um there are rumors that oru's taken to white people's degrees because they came out as gay or lesbian after they got their degree and then they fought it in court and luckily the person won and kept their degree that's just the rumor though so i can't say for sure that's true another thing that was funny allegedly there's not allowed to have any black on the jerseys because it's a satanic color because someone drew a design from the track team and they were like nope we can't have
it because i was black on it so that's kind of like the beliefs of the university but then i kind of want to get into my personal experience and why i personally left because you can have all these beliefs and all the honor code stuff but you know that going in in a way like i kind of did know that i was just blind to it because it gave me free tuition to go and that's a big reason why a lot of people end up going there is because of that um so i started noticing
that a lot of the things in the honor code but then also in like the belief systems they're not really biblical stuff they're mainly like old religious beliefs that people just hold on to that aren't really true like tattoos like come on i thought that was a little odd because i went there to study the bible my major was biblical literature so that was like the whole reason i was going there um but there's kind of this belief that the outside world is scary or demonic and that was that held true with my personal experiences
with people because when i would go to somewhere off campus like a country dancing bar then that was looked down upon and i would talk about it people would be like bro like why would you go there they serve alcohol there there's just that's just not a good environment or there's like there's demonic things there and same thing especially with casino because it's in oklahoma so i went to casino like three or four times brought forty dollars had a good time whatever but do not tell people that you went to the casino if you go
to oral roberts university because it will mark you as the rebellious crazy guy um that was a little interesting and then we had to take a class called spirit empowered living every freshman takes it it's a full year class we had a day it's called the baptism of the holy spirit day where technically they didn't force you to speak in tongues but it's kind of like hey if you want to live for god and be serious in your faith then like come to the front and receive the baptism of the holy spirit baptism in the
holy spirit is synonymous with speaking in tongues like it's the same type of thing another thing that's interesting i noticed that like i was in college the classes were so easy because i took a lot of ap credits in high school and my classes at oru were easier than my ap credits in high school and i didn't i was like it was hard to complain because the classes were easy but i remember sitting and seeing other people talk about how they were hard and i was like huh because i came from a public school background
i went to a big public high school in texas and a lot of other people came from home school backgrounds or went to some little private school and it didn't seem like the education was kind of at the same level but i didn't want to like be prideful about it and make a sound like oh i'm way better than these kids but i definitely noticed that the intelligence wasn't always up to par and it kind of worries me the people that graduate where they're gonna be like in the world like how are they going to
interact with society with that kind of world view another thing that's funny there's an entire page on oral roberts university on a website called cult education institute so i'm not saying it's a cult i'm not not saying it is uh but the fact that it's listed on a cult website and they have like 20 or 25 different articles written about it it has says something i don't know um i remember we had a lifestyle quiz for like uh hpe course because everyone had to take uh you had to take a a pe course every single
semester right and we had a fitbit that tracked our steps if you didn't reach the steps on the fitbit you basically weren't able to get an a in the class like i got a b in hpe because i didn't get 100 cardio minutes a week you had to get 100 cardio minutes on your fitbit a week or else you were when they weren't able to get full credit so i got like 50 a week averaged and then i didn't get the full credit on the field test because in order to get full credit on the
field test you had to run a mile and a half in under nine minutes and that's pretty difficult i mean i was the fastest one in my entire class and i still didn't get it i got a b in my pe class because i didn't get cardio or i didn't hear about under nine minutes i ran like a 10 15. so i thought that was a little odd but whatever and so we had a lifestyle quiz in there and i scored lower on the quiz because some of the questions were like do you pray every
day or do you read your bible every day and i was honest and i was like not every day so then my quiz grade is lower it's like that's kind of odd i i just i didn't like that it kind of encouraged you to just not be honest i just wanted to be real and honest with everything instead of give like the stale church answer like yeah man every day uh that's kind of something was discouraged because i also had heard from people from the mission trip department that they had literally got taken off their
mission trip because when they asked them about stuff in the past that they took him off because of it i mean i in my opinion if you admit hey i had sex in high school you should not get taken off a mission trip team because of that that that is my personal belief um other thing that was interesting we had a meeting with the dean with one of the deans i'm not going to name them because i don't want oyu to get pissed or like i don't know but one of the deans he said in
quotes i'm saying men hear from god and women hear from men and i was like huh i don't know about that one i thought that was a little bit sexist um so yeah the bible professors were honestly awesome though i took old testament new testament and a class called hermeneutics and i learned a lot and that bible professors are awesome but i feel bad for them because they take pay cuts to stay there because oreo pays their employees terribly they take pay cuts to stay there because they feel called by god to be there i
just feel bad because they're getting taken advantage of and the university kind of convinces them that they have to be there to do what god calls them and i don't really love that um and they weren't allowed to speak at chapel either at least they never did so i thought that was kind of odd how come the people that know the most about the bible weren't allowed to speak at chapel wouldn't that not make sense so we had these other chapel speakers come in that were from these ultra charismatic ultra pentecostal backgrounds and they'd kind
of put on a show and try to do healings in front of the crowd and everything like that and it just wasn't really the environment that suited me um so i'm trying to stay as as most the most unbiased as i can here um and not try to blast put anybody on blast i do have our president in 4k um on video saying that people who are gay are possessed by demons which i will probably not add to this video just because i don't want to start anything or get into some legal agreement and i
was very scared to make a video about this until i got accepted into texas a m because given what they've done before i'm afraid that if they saw this video that they would put a hole in my transcript not send it and the fact that that's a fear of mine is very concerning but like that i have to be afraid of that it's kind of concerning another thing a lot of students there like some people do love it and they want to be there but the number one reason most people are there is scholarships or
their parents like made him go or it's like that's the only place they ever knew about because a lot of people came from home school backgrounds i would say that probably 10 to 15 percent of people came from public schools most people were from little areas or little schools or homeschooled and it was just a lot different environment for me um so that's kind of like the overall things this was not a right fit for me um and i kind of want to make a video talking about that but then also some transparency on that
kind of thing um and what it was really like so that was my experience if you guys have any more questions you can feel free to message me and i just really want to make this video to inform people on what my experience is really like and what the university is like because there are a lot of things that i no longer agree with and i felt shamed for leaving heavily i mean if i spoke my opinion or spoke like a opinion or had a thought that was contrary to the belief of the people around
me it was looked down upon heavy it's like oh you're doubting god you're doubting this um and so i thought that was that was kind of a difficult thing to go through um so there are a lot of things i didn't say a lot more things that i could have said could have put on blast but i decided against it because i think that i gave enough reasons to justify leaving in this video um but yeah i hope you guys enjoyed and just be true to yourself and go to the school that you want to
go to and that you think aligns with your values your morals and what's going to prepare you for life because i didn't feel like i was prepared for life if i stayed here so y'all have a good one and thank you for watching
