Hello, I'm Dr Alexandre Amato, and today I'm going to talk about where lipedema comes from! Lipedema is the deposition of fat, preferably in the limbs , that occurs in women. 11% of women have it and many of them do not know about lipedema .
It's sick fat, fat that inflames very easily, causing pain. Differentiating obesity is relatively simple to do in the sense that obesity does not hurt and lipedema hurts. So, if there is a deposition of fat in the lower limbs and there is pain upon pressure, the probability of it being lipedema is high.
But the question is: where does it come from? Is it a catching disease ? A disease that passes?
So lipedema is a genetic disease! We know that the diseases that are highly prevalent and that affect 11% of women have a very high prevalence. So we know that these diseases are genetically compromised.
So, when we start to study the family tree, the family of people who have lipedema, we can identify women in the family who have this similar characteristic of fat deposition on the legs, often they may not be in the mother's family. The mother may not carry this gene, it may be in the father's family, with women. We always have to look for/look at women, because cases in men are very rare.
So, we always look at women in the family tree. The point is that, as it is a highly prevalent disease, genetics probably not just one gene involved, there are several genes involved. So we get a rare, genetic disease.
It is easy to identify which gene is causing this disease. Now, when we get a very common disease, first of all it is very common because there must be several genes involved and it is very difficult for us to get a group of people with lipedema and another group of people with lipedema. In this group with lipedema, we will not identify a single gene that is triggering the disease.
When we cross-reference the data we do not find this gene, so it becomes more difficult to discover which genes are affected. And why is this important? So first, the origin of the disease is a genetic disease!
And interestingly, some generations may not present the disease. So you can skip a generation or you can skip a person who can carry the genetics and not express the disease. And because it is a genetic disease, we will always think about our children, so we have to identify it early and start treatment earlier.
Therefore, there is no genetic test yet to identify lipedema. Although there are international efforts in search of this genetic map , we can request this exam. Even in these larger 23andme tests that carry out complete genetic mapping , there is no possibility of diagnosis through genetics (yet).
Even though we know it is a genetic disease. Another very important aspect is that as there are several different genes involved, this means that the treatment may not be as effective for one gene as for another. For one patient as for another.
So this has to be taken very seriously: what works for one person with lipedema will not necessarily work for another person with lipedema. This may occur due to different genetics. So be very careful when taking advice from someone who has had great success with something.
I'm not saying don't learn from other people, this should happen. I'm just saying to use this information with caution . Knowing that what worked for one person will not necessarily work for you.
So, never go straight to the most invasive, the most drastic. Start slowly! Have this phase of self-knowledge, which is very important and will be very important in your life, from now on!
