hey guys hope you're doing well today I'm gonna tell you about the new points based system for the SMC or skilled migrant category resident visa for New Zealand that's going to begin on October 9th this year the new approach now makes it easier to get a New Zealand work visa and a resident permit with a more simplified point system that sets a clear skills threshold for permanent residents and offers several ways for people to demonstrate their skill level you can apply until your 55 years of age and the best part is there's no limit or quota set for the number of visas yes that's an unlimited amount of visas offered under the new system it's now also a simpler application process and once you meet the points threshold you can get your combined work and resident permit in just six to eight weeks which is a huge improvement from the previous processing timelines which would stretch up to even two years now how much will you actually earn you'll be paid a median wage of at least 29. 66 New Zealand dollars per hour or a minimum wage of at least 22. 70 per hour which has been compulsory as of first April 2023.
however do note that on an average you can earn around 61 000 per year based on a 40 hour week compared to Canada these salary figures are really high system takes effect on 9th October 2023 and applicants who wish to apply under the existing system can still apply until then normally in this video I'm going to tell you everything about the new changes to the SMC visa application the new points calculator I'll compare the old system versus the new system and how all of these changes can benefit you as well so do watch the video till the end hey guys this is Jason from dream Canada if wasting any time let's straight away start with the differences between the old system and the new system introduced the existing or older SMC category attracts and invites migrants from all countries in the world so it does not matter where you're applying from as long as you meet the points criteria which is calculated based on your age work experience education and other qualifications English proficiency job offer Etc now this policy had been in effect for a long time and there were no changes except the points threshold required similar to the CRS score for Canada which goes up and down with the previous system you needed a total of 100 points and if you got these 100 points you can apply by creating an eoi or an expression of Interest once you create an aui your profile would go into a pool and the highest scoring or ranking candidates would get picked from the pool earlier candidates with 140 points were getting selected which then went up to 160 points and last selection which happened at 180 points now commit the new changes to the point system the skill migrant category has now adopted a new most simplified system to understand and apply through this newer system has only six points in total which is gained through three different categories kindly note that you can score the full six points in only one category and become eligible you can't collectively count all your points for all the three categories together the first category is for certified occupations for both skilled and unskilled jobs like a medical license or registration for a doctor or teaching certification for teachers or even a brick and block laying license for building and construction jobs basically any training or certification that you have to complete before a professional occupation with this occupation registration you can score between three to even the whole six points right away now how can you make sure exactly how many points you can score for your occupation registration if you have a minimum of two years of trading for registration or certification then you'll get three points if you have a minimum of four years of trading then you'll get four points if you have a minimum of five years of training then you'll get five points and if you have a minimum of six years of training then you'll get the whole six points and you'll be eligible with this criteria alone now if you don't have an occupation registration it's not the end of the road you can even apply if you have an educational qualification of a bachelor's degree or higher for a doctorate or PhD which is is equivalent to a level 10 New Zealand education qualification then you'll get the whole six points which will make you eligible by itself for a master's degree which is equivalent to a level 9 New Zealand education qualification then you'll get five points for a bachelor's degree or a postgraduate diploma which is equivalent to a level 8 New Zealand education qualification then you'll get four points for a postgraduate certificate which is equivalent to a level 8 New Zealand education qualification or a bachelor's degree equivalent to a level 7 New Zealand education then you'll get three points no points are offered for any education lesser than a bachelor's degree kindly note if your education is not completed in New Zealand which the case may be for most of you you just have to get your education evaluated from nzqa or New Zealand qualifications authority to make sure that it's equivalent to New Zealand education standards just like what Wes does for Canada and USA the third category for which you'll get points is your income level basically the higher your salary offered from your New Zealand job offer the higher the points you can score if your salary is three times the medium wage in New Zealand which is currently at 29. 66 dollars they will get the whole six points so if your salary is 88. 98 dollars per hour then you can qualify based on your salary alone if a salary is two times the median wage in New Zealand So at around 59.
32 dollars then you'll get Five Points if a salary is 1. 5 times the median wage in New Zealand So at around 44. 49 then you'll get three points now since you can claim points only from one category you must be thinking how can you possibly score all six points because for that to happen you would have to fulfill the topmost criteria in any one given category but don't worry the New Zealand government have introduced a subcategory which offers you more points for work experience in a skilled category for each year of skill work experience you can get one point up to a maximum of three points so you can combine any category along with a one to three years of skill experience depending on how many points you need for example if you've completed a bachelor's degree equivalent to a level 7 of New Zealand education then you'll get three points with that and you can complete three years of skill work experience for three additional points awarded for this subcategory so your total would be six points which will make you eligible to apply through this new point system similarly if you've completed a master's degree which is equivalent to a level 9 New Zealand education then you'll get five points and so you'll need just one year of skill work experience to become eligible with six points now coming to your New Zealand job offer criteria your job offer must fulfill only two requirements the first requirement is that it must be only from an accredited employer and secondly your contract needs to be for a permanent or fixed term contract for at least 12 months and for at least 30 hours per week can you know that a few requirements will remain unchanged in this new system these are the Fairly basic requirements which are common for any New Zealand Visa like character and health requirements which have to be approved by a PCC or police clearance certificate and medical test reports English language requirements which are 6.
