hear sounds that he can't hear already it won't make things clear but it will amplify sounds he can and i think speech therapy would be a good idea too [Applause] i don't care [Music] i'll tell you what are you doing how would you cut it out don't do that [Music] oh because i said so that's what he doesn't like ah [Applause] hey danny nah come out why not [Applause] i don't know how you talk to him [Laughter] like this [Applause] what the hearing aids the [Applause] [Applause] almost [Applause] already i can't believe that you couldn't

like it was snowing on the empire state building yeah i never told you but that glass ball scared me i used to think there were people living inside they were suffocating because they couldn't get in the air last night i dreamt that jonah was inside the glass ball and he was screaming at me to get him out and i couldn't i couldn't i kept running around trying to find someone to help me and nobody could jonah was so angry with me i thought he hates me i thought that it was just that he couldn't hear
so it's his birthday next week who's birthday jonas [Laughter] i don't know maybe ann and the kids maybe some of the kids from the neighborhood from the neighborhood you didn't know any kids they had to call up and invite a bunch of kids to a freak show don't you ever say that to me so what do you break he's not a freak i didn't say that he was a freak you said freak show what's that supposed to mean it doesn't mean anything it's just like an expression i don't want to talk to you oh great
you don't want to talk to me but yeah ever since they got back from the hospital now you don't want to talk to me that's great i care about jonah stop yelling at me i'm not yelling at you what you don't want anybody to hear they know you know what um they think he's nuts do you think they don't know what do you think they're blind what do you want what do you want you were the one who was so excited about him coming home from the hospital well weren't you well weren't you i don't

told you it was stupid to have a party it wasn't your party it was jonah's party jonah doesn't know how to access the party if he wants doesn't even know what a to is it's you who won the party you bought him the bike right you're right i was stupid i shouldn't have gotten in the bike because he doesn't know how to ride a bike you can't too ride a bike yeah inside back and forth between the kitchen and the bathroom you can ride his little bike something so stupid hey you know you're the one
that's being stupid because you won't face it he's not normal i don't want to use you say that he's not normal stop it don't you say that to me he can't even live like a human being i saw jonah in that hospital for three years every time i went there i felt numb i thought it was cold in there it wasn't danny they showed me the thermometer on the wall what are you doing don't come back don't hear me don't you ever what are you doing in the background look you're not holding your hair even
if you weren't something you can do about it oh annie go ah plan oh come on you're fine how john will look at you i can walk out of here right now and never see you again uh oh my god you and then you'll just listen and you won't see one more time jonah good for you wonderful um come on richie i never thought i wanted to be like everybody else now that's all i want just to be like any mother not joan would be like any boy that's not asking too much isn't it no
now all i need is someone to tell me how i used to go around asking people that question but i know since i was i went as teachers and doctors and all the audiologists everybody has an answer and nobody agrees with anyone else come on i'll show you an electric child use his hands including sign language to talk with your child otherwise what's great about this place this is okay jonah you stay right here car that's a car truck i can't stand it anymore not my fault hey anthony show your brother the fire hydrant car
who's it from daddy what what is it says he says he loves you come on [Laughter] okay finish out and when you finish work with sudden dancing now again don't eat the onion don't eat the onions [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] wow wow [Laughter] foreign oh [Laughter] is goodbye [Applause] grandma's dead [Applause] i wish he could tell me how he's feeling he takes in so much with his eyes but none of it ever comes back out again sometimes i'm afraid he'll get so full of things he'll just burst look i gotta be gone you know i
just i just kinda wanna stop by [Applause] foreign [Applause] um so [Applause] [Applause] so jonah jonah what no no wait a minute which way did he go i think you went that way [Applause] [Applause] hey hey wait a minute [Applause] hey come on come on you can't do that hey what's the matter with you kid hey were you crazy or something take it easy take it easy this gets crazy oh oh [Applause] every day when he looked at me it was like it was all my fault i don't know what to do danny please help
me i never wanted him to be deaf he never wanted him to look funny and sound funny i can't stand being here and i can't stand no big deal the way i feel because i'm like jonah i don't have any words so [Applause] it takes time mrs corelli we don't have any shortcuts how much time jonah's like this is gonna stop and wait for him to learn his thing repetition he'll keep saying that but john's like an animal in a cage he might as well be in the zoo he's in a cage mrs i didn't
put him there i'm trying to help him get out of it but he's not getting out here it takes time now what would he be like then what would he like when he gets out of that cage like you and me no he won't he's not like you with me he'll never be like you and me he'll be as much like you would be as we could make him he'll be as much like you and me as a parent oh mrs corellian tell me about the children who failed you said sometimes children fail what happens
to them tell me they remain deaf mrs corelli hi my name is jenny corelli could we talk for a minute i saw you in speech therapy upstairs um my son goes to speech therapy um my son speech therapy could we talk together uh maybe we can have lunch oh um i'm sorry i don't understand i would like to meet some deaf people you can't draw further the class for the deaf people sure if it would be alright i'm nervous you sure you want to do this no this is 356. let's go in listen pass the
movie back there you want to go see star wars i thought do you want to go there come on we've come this far take a deep breath what do you think it'll be like [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] hi [Applause] yes [Applause] is [Applause] [Laughter] well you know many deaf people have some hearing and those who don't can still feel vibrations oh yes thank you i'll have a ginger ale a ginger ale um okay i'll have a beer now you know how it feels to be a deaf person have to settle for something you don't want just
because no one understands you she wants a ginger ale that's a beer want to sit down oh yeah to speak when you're born deaf and janice became deaf at the age of seven so she already knew how to speak that's why thank you bob this is jenny and connie hi sweetie hi you're saying you have deaf children again all the hearing people think it's a big controversy but we deaf uh okay yeah oh he's gonna teach you animals if that's the first thing you learned to do as a kid now you have to guess what
they are done and the turtles now watch his face what is that what does it feel like [Laughter] how what funny how are you how are you fine [Laughter] make me very angry he got very close to me and i was thinking don't sit down next to me don't sit down next to me and then okay right up next to me and you turned around and you started missing i started to cry i started crying and i thought i'm afraid like white not to be angry people people anymore if they were afraid of me i
would try to make them feel at least we know deaf kids grow up i want jonah to learn sign language i want to learn sign language i hate to lose a child's destiny but maybe you're right you asked about children who failed well i don't think it's jonah i think i failed him how do you mean funny all this time i've been pretending he wasn't deaf pretending pretending that he could be just like everyone else just like you and me i think you said we teach him to talk we teach him to read lips and
if he could learn to do that then he wouldn't be deaf anymore but many children learn to do those things perhaps if we'd have jonah earlier but we didn't we have him now and i think we're trying to make him into something that he's not we've been trying to help you visit the world as it is when people speak to each other and listen to each other we can do this for a child we've given him a great gift if a child cannot learn to do it there's plenty of time for him to be dead
that's just it is death there's no virtue in that person and there's no point in pretending he's hearing either it's still a hearing world yes it is i guess it's up to those of us who love jonah help him live in a death mrs corelli i won't allow jonah to use signs while he's in our classes you think it's contagious when i was a young woman just beginning to teach children who signed had their hands tied i've seen jonah the dance time won't allow signing and i've got to choose what's best for jonah um so
huh so [Applause] [Music] so [Applause] oh girl [Applause] foreign [Applause] uh [Laughter] oh instead oh keep hi grandma on these two for me i need to run and get something sure um show me how do you say i love you [Applause] so hi mrs corelli hi you want to see the principal mr barclay's in the cafeteria it's the door over on your right you can't meet him in there if you like thank you okay oh are you finished oh anthony hasn't read it yet okay did you make friends with spiderman yeah are you hungry you
sure [Applause] [Applause] uh [Applause] what do you want what's his name why don't you ask him yourself [Applause] yes [Applause] uh [Applause]
