hey it's gary patrick here hey today i've got a pretty cool video to share with you i wanted to go back to my roots uh when i was a kid in the 80s i wanted to rediscover those guitar sounds that first inspired me uh to play guitar uh so i got on reverb. com and i went all over the globe and i sourced an original bcb6 pedalboard uh the pedalboard came from canada i had to go to the netherlands to get all the correct power cables uh the daisy chain power cable from the 80s and all of the uh the correct interconnect cables i even have the long one that goes from this side to this side you know and it's been fun it's been fun rediscovering some pedals that the surprising thing is is they're so relevant today i mean i went out and i gigged with this pedalboard and it sounded like me i mean it's negligible as to what you can tell difference it all comes down to the hands anyway i believe but you could geek with this today um the cs2 compressor is from 1985. the od1 is uh highly sought after is from 1981 and i couldn't leave well enough alone i sent it to analog man analog mic analog man and he installed he did the 14 pin chip mod so the original od ones have a 14 a really long 14 pin chip and i'll tell you it sounds really good by the way uh the ge7 is from 1984.
uh i've always loved the ce3 chorus pedal that's from 1982. i've got a dm3 from 1987. it's the newest pedal on the board and then the dd2 from 1985.
so yeah i'm going to do a demo and not only am i going to demo this board but i'm going to demo it with two more boss overdrives i'm going to switch them out i've got the under you know an sd1 there you go everybody's played an sd1 and then i've got an od3 which i've loved in od3 for years and years and of course i couldn't leave well enough alone i'll send it to analog man and he upgrades the components uh and it just sounds like an od3 better it sounds great clear really good um one more thing before i grab a guitar is you ask okay so all of these pedals from the 80s they're aca boss aca so how am i going to power all these when i'm using a psa i've got a psa adapter i've used some 3m dual lock and i've i've attached it here well the answer to that question is is as long as you have one psa pedal in the chain it'll work so what i did is since i was going to send my od-1 to analog mic i asked him to do the psa mod because all of my other overdrives are psa as well so that's how that works it's actually really simple um okay i'm gonna grab a guitar uh and i've got two vintage my vintage deluxe reverbs i've waited my whole life to get these amps i've got a 66 and a 76 uh they both sound very different um i they both have the bright cap snipped on on the uh on the reverb channel and they both have celestion alnico gold speakers currently all right i'm gonna grab a guitar and uh i'll see in a second all right i got a guitar let's play this pedal board this is my unaffected guitar sound it's one of my favorite songs in the history of songs it came out when i was in high school and it just spoke to me i love the melody the lyrics and that gorgeous guitar sound that tim pierce got when he recorded with crowded house i didn't understand it when i was a kid but he was playing the compressor pedal for sure and that's what this is it's owned very little and it's it's negligible if it's translates through the little iphone i'm recording with but it's so much of a feel thing [Music] let's add this dv2 [Music] [Music] now that's 80s right what happens in the middle of that song is a beautiful organ solo right well i'm in a trio so i got to play all those organ parts so what i need i need a little lift and volume just so the people are like hey he's playing you know that's when the ge7 comes in and i don't have a set radical and you got to be really careful when you got a graphic eq pedal because it only takes a little bit um unless you're trying to shape shift into a super scoop or a big nasal thing uh trying to make a certain part fit in a recording or something you know uh in my opinion uh but i lift a little bit of 800 in just a tad of 400 just a little bit and it just picks me up over the band right and i don't know how much it's going to translate with that little iphone i'm recording with but if i played the passage [Music] uh [Music] beautiful all the textures are there all right let's play some country all right for this little country thing all that i've altered is i've turned up the sustain on the compressor pedal about a notch and a half that's it i'm keeping the same settings on the ge7 for a little bit of a boost and i've added the dm3 for a little bit of slapback [Music] [Music] um [Music] [Applause] [Music] all right here we are at overdrives so here we have the od1 and that is boss's earliest overdrive pedal now once again i had this one modified to the original spec of a 14 pin uh chip now that would be boss's original design um those 14 pin chip od ones are extremely hard to source extremely hard but analog man can analog mic can uh mod yours i think it sounds really good um i'm gonna play a little bit the overdrive is at about 11 o'clock right now [Music] let's go up to about three o'clock [Music] mmm [Music] if you notice this overdrive doesn't have a large bottom end to it and that is you have to you have to realize when they created this this circuit most players were playing four input marshals you know loud amps they were already turning the amps up really loud there was already content of muscle down low so they didn't need a lot of low end off this it would just make it extra muddy right um that's a pretty cool characteristic actually because in in my world and in today's music when i'm making you know a country rock pop whatever as a guitarist my job is to support the vocals right so if i want to gig and i'm playing and i've got a ton of low end it just walks all over the vocals and that is useless so in a way um this pedal is perfect it sits in the mix real nice up in the mid-range i know that you weren't looking for chicken suit for the guitar player's soul from gary patrick today i just thought i would offer some real world experience over my almost 35 years of playing for a living so this is pretty cool let me show you how i would use it with the rest of these pedals in a in like a song setting [Music] the overdrive's around 10 o'clock something like that and i'll use a compressor to thicken it up or something let's use the dm3 [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] hey [Music] [Music] yeah there you go let's look at another pedal let's look at the sd1 all right it's time for the sd-1 overdrive [Music] wow man 20 years ago that was a 39 pedal at guitar center remember that so whereas the od one had more it's got more sizzle and just upper mid characteristic that i can i mean it lends it so it's dying to be put in front of an already overdriven amp in my opinion that's that that circuit was designed for that and it works in front of a clean amp but this i think might work better in front of a clean app it's got a little more low-mid right and in my opinion i think it works better whenever when you back off the volume knob everybody talks about that but it's true it's a real deal so wide open [Music] there's the range of usable tone seems to be a little bit better with this pedal when i back off the volume uh i'm not trying to discourage you from buying uh an od1 and having this experience because that thing sounds killer there's there is a clarity sometimes it may not transfer through an iphone and i should set up microphones i know you guys are going to beat me up for that but uh i'm just kind of a speed guy i'm just a i'm kind of a stick and rudder man set it up press play but this sounds killer i love it [Music] so let me back off the volume a little bit [Music] hmm [Music] um [Music] that sounds really good let's go to the od3 next last but not least we got the o d3 [Music] man that just sounds like a cranked up vintage amp to me it kind of sounds like it's uh it turns those fenders into like a marshall with a 412.
