welcome to week two Thursday of the lent scripture Journey today's reading is from Luke 4 just verses 14 through 21. then Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the spirit and news about him spread throughout the entire vicinity he was teaching in their synagogues being praised by everyone he came to Nazareth where he had been brought up as usual he entered the synagogue on the Sabbath day and stood up to read The Scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him and unrolling the scroll he found the place where it was written the spirit
of the Lord is on me because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor he has sent me to Proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind to set free the oppressed to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor he then rolled up the scroll gave it back to the attendant and sat down and the eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on him he began by saying to them today as you listen this scripture has been fulfilled remember a couple of days ago when Jesus was filled
by the spirit led by the spirit in the wilderness and returned in the power of the spirit today we pick up the story and look at what he did next Jesus began to teach and Luke records the moment Jesus himself revealed his identity and his purpose everyone in the synagogue that day knew this particular passage in Isaiah 61 was speaking of the favorable year of the Lord for Jesus to say he is the Fulfillment of this passage verse 21 was to declare himself to be the Messiah and what was his purpose to preach good news
to release to give sight to set free to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor the silence that day would have been deafening no human can claim that about himself unless just maybe could it be true could Jesus really be the one
