Our Father who art in heaven Hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on Earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors and lead us not into temptation but Deliver Us from Evil for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever amen many people often wonder about the correct way to pray what requests should I make some pray for only 5 minutes and run out of words While others turn prayer into a selfish act it's
sad to see that many believers do not live a life of prayer because they have not understood its true purpose if you find yourself in this situation you are in the right place today I want to encourage you to explore the true meaning of the well-known Lord's Prayer taught by our Lord Jesus Christ many Overlook its Essence and have turned it into a mere lurgical routine but I assure you that by understanding its profound meaning your prayer life will radically change and you will begin to communicate with God in a more intimate manner receiving Powerful

by the Holy Spirit recognized the importance of prayer and exhorted us to pray without ceasing if we do not know how to pray or what to ask for our prayer will be ineffective it is essential to grow in our spiritual life life through constant prayer prayer should be an essential part of our Lives demonstrating total dependence on God in giving humans reach their maximum potential when they humble themselves before God showing their spirituality through their Devotion to the word of God and their commitment to prayer dear listeners it is imperative that we all be people
dedicated to prayer regardless of whether we are men or women although we have magnificent temples modern sound equipment and large worship teams what we really need at this moment are prayer warriors let me now present the context of the biblical passage Jews considered that there are three fundamental pillars of religious life charity prayer and fasting however many had lost the authenticity of prayer turning it into a mechanical and ritualistic exercise in the time of Jesus they prayed incorrectly and without a true connection with god making their prayers cold and lifeless the Jews turned something good
into something detestable starting with the religious leaders now let's analyze chapter 6 of The Gospel of Matthew focusing on verses 5 to 15 where Jesus exposes the form of prayer that is not acceptable to God the manner that pleases the father and finally presents a model of Prayer that includes the elements and attitudes that please God Jesus did not have to order them to pray as it was a common practice among Jews to pray at least three times a day but he instructed them not to pray like the Hypocrites let's read verse 5 of chapter
6 of Matthew and when thou prayest Thou shalt not be as the Hypocrites are for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets that they may be seen of men verily I say unto you they have their reward there were two main places where a Jew in the times of Jesus could pray hypocritically in the synagogue during the hour of public prayer or in the streets at the designated times for prayer at 9 in the morning at noon and at 3:00 in the afternoon the Hypocrites loved the most
notable places where more people could admire their piety they not only prayed in the street but also positioned themselves at the corners of the busiest Street streets exactly when it was time to pray the word Street here refers to a broad and spacious place from which our word square comes they sought the attention and Applause of the crowds in the squares making the streets and synagogues their stages by achieving this they already had their full reward these Hypocrites did not pray to be heard by God but to be seen by men this is a common
mistake in public prayer today when people pray to impress or teach others rather than pouring out their hearts before God such prayers are an insult to God when we say words to God while really trying to impress others then we use God simply as a tool to impress the Hypocrites only received Applause from people as a reward for from God they would receive nothing my dear listeners if we imitate these religious Hypocrites we should not expect to receive anything from the Lord now let's continue reading verse 6 but thou when thou prayest enter into thy
closet and when thou Hast shut thy door pray to thy father which is in secret and thy father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly in contrast to the public display of the Hypocrites Jesus recommends that we seek a private secret place where only God can see us the second person singular pronoun thou in this verse contrasts with the plural form in the previous verse indicating that it is about personal rather than Collective prayer Pray to thy father means that prayer should be directed to God with the aim of pleasing him and not the
crowds addressing God and him alone in prayer both in private and public requires rigorous discipline and a pure motive the believer has to decide once and for all whether the their main motive is to please God or the crowds Jesus did not mean to suggest that public prayer was not acceptable to God he himself prayed in public as did the apostles but they all maintained a solid private prayer life which ensured that their motives were pure when praying publicly every child of God should have some place to be alone with God unless there is such
a place secret prayer will not be sustained for long or persistently Jesus had his secret places the heavenly father promises to reward such children manifestly with answered prayer his intimate presence and true honor for all eternity let us continue with the reading of verses 7 and 8 but when ye pray use not vain repetitions as the Heathen do for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking be not ye therefore like unto them for your father knoweth what things you have need of before before you ask him prayer should not consist of
vain repetitions the Greek word is batalo which means to repeat the same things over and over using many Idle Words babbling this refers to formulaic prayers or empty phrases unconverted people pray like this but God is not impressed by the mere multiplication of words he wants to hear the sincere expressions of the heart he adds that we should not use prayer solely for God to supply our needs as prayers are much more than this Judaism recognized that God knew all things therefore the issue here is not the doctrine of Jesus listeners but their hearts the
Jews saw God differently from the Greeks even though the monotheistic Faith was not always what it should have been in Judaism God was seen as a father who delighted in satisfying the needs of his people Judaism also recognized that God knew all the thoughts of a person Jesus based effective prayer on a relationship of intimacy not on a model of commercial Association which was closer to what ancient paganism followed my dear listeners it is crucial to understand that prayer is not a parachute used only in emergency situations prayer is not a desperate plea but rather
a living and loving connection with our heavenly father now let's analyze what we can discover in the model prayer that Lord Jesus taught us which we find in verses 9 to15 dear listener Jesus presents us a model of prayer not with the intention that it be memorized and recited repeatedly as some do indeed this is exactly what Jesus was reproving in the previous verses if recited liturgically it will lose the essence of prayer and become empty repetitions in the Gospel of Luke 11 we also find this prayer which reveals something very interesting let's read verse
1 of 11 and it came to pass that as he was praying in a certain place when he ceased one of his disciples said unto him Lord teach us to pray as John also taught his disciples one of the disciples here mentions that he was deeply moved by Jesus's prayer which he seems to have heard by chance it was so distinct from what was heard in the synagogue or the temple Jesus prayed to his father with such freedom and it was such an authentic communication with his father which indicates that this disciple saw his own
prayer life as empty lacking life and full of rituals hence the request teach us to pray often rabbis wrote prayers for their disciples to recite having seen Jesus pray many times they knew that he loved prayer and that for him it was not a mere exercise of eloquent recitation they wanted to pray like their Master dear list this message teaches us that it is possible to learn to pray the Christian Life involves constant spiritual growth and increasingly deeper prayer I have heard many people say that they do not have the gift of prayer or that
they do not like to pray but the truth is that all believers are called to pray and have the need to learn to do so just as the Lord's disciples wanted to learn to pray mentioned now let's read verse 9 of chapter 6 of Matthew after this manner therefore pray ye Our Father which art in heaven Hallowed be thy name in Greek the pronoun ye is emphatic Jesus was especially addressing his disciples in this context the word ye contrasts with the Hypocrites and the Gentiles who had an incorrect way of praying as we have already
mentioned in this verse two fundamental principles of prayer are found firstly the fatherhood of God the prayer begin Begins by recognizing who God is and acknowledging him as father the recognition that we are children of our heavenly father should be the first in every prayer the Jews during the Old Testament period knew God as father but never in the intimate and personal sense as now in the Christian era the expression our indicates that it is our faith that grants us this right therefore it is written but as many as received him to them gave he
power to become come the sons of God even to them that believe on his name this prayer does not teach us to say my father it teaches us to say our father it is very significant that in this prayer the words I me and my do not appear it is true to say that Jesus came to remove these words from our lives and replace them with we and our God is not the exclusive possession of any one person the same phrase Our Father implies the elimination of the eye the fatherhood of God is the only
basis for the fraternity among Believers by saying our we recognize that others have the same right and access to God and that they are our brothers God wants us to understand that we are part of his family and that we can approach him with full confidence Jesus teaches us that our father is loving compassionate and kind dear listener if we could fully understand this we would always be in constant prayer to our Heavenly Father which art in Heaven expresses the Transcendence loftiness and glory of God and balances the amance expressed in our father our heavenly
father is a father who diligently fulfills his duties He Loves Us provides for us cares for us teaches us disciplines us and forgives us among other things as his children we also have duties towards our heavenly father such as loving him trusting in Him honoring him and obeying him secondly the priority of God Hallowed be thy name the first petition places God in a preeminent position the expression hallowed opens a dimension of respect reverence appreciation honor praise and worship thy name represents the entire virtue of the revealed person we respect God and his name because
it shows his Essence who he is this petition is the desire of all God's children that our father be recognized and honored by all men it's easy to say this without thinking about its meaning when we say Hallowed be thy name we ask that his name be worshiped revered respected and glorified God's name is not hallowed if our word is not valid or if we take his name in vain God's name is hallowed when his great name is glorified by the worship we offer him by the songs prayers preachings and other action of worship but
it is also glorified by our lives in 1 Peter 3:15 it says but sanctify the Lord God in your hearts and be ready always to give an answer to every man that askthe a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear finally we glorify God when we preach and practice Biblical teaching now we ask ourselves can God's name be blasphemed clearly yes let's read Romans 2:4 for the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you as it is written the world judges the god of the people according to the
acts of that people as the people are so is their God seeing the lives of the Jews the Gentiles blaspheme the name of Jehovah unfortunately many Christians also dishonor god with their lives giving a poor testimony dear friend let us sanctify God by worshiping him in this part of our prayer let us express praise and worship to his name say how much we love him glorify his name Etc our Lord Jesus Christ did so thirdly God's program thy kingdom come we read verse 10 thy kingdom come thy will be done in earth as it is
in heaven after worship we should pray for the promotion of God's cause putting his interests first this expresses the desire of the one praying that God's Reign materialize the Greek term basilea is used with three meanings first the territory over which the king Reigns second the Royal dignity his majesty and glory and third the exercise of his Sovereign power or his effective reign in this context it is best understood in the sense of the third meaning his reign will reach its glorious culmination in the perusia the second coming of Christ when all people and all
things will submit or be subjected to him but his Reign arrived in the person of Christ and is arriving day by day as more and more people submit to him the reign of Christ in their lives should take priority over our personal interests Jorge says this prayer is a plea for God to Reign to manifest his sovereignty and power to put to flight all the enemies of justice and of his Divine government that only God may be king over the whole world but this petition is also linked to world evangelization because the kingdom of God
comes particularly in the salvation of souls we read in 1 Timothy 2: 1-4 I exhort therefore that first of all supplications prayers intercessions and giving of thanks be made for all men for kings and for all that are in Authority that we may lead a quiet and peaceful life in all godliness and honesty for this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our savior who will have all men to be saved and to come unto the knowledge of the truth we should pray for the coming of Christ and the establishment of God's Eternal
Kingdom in the new Heaven and new earth we should also pray for the spiritual presence and manifestation of the kingdom of God in the present this includes asserting God's power among his people to to destroy the works of Satan heal the sick Save The Lost promote Justice and pour out the Holy Spirit on his people we should pray for God's work for pastors missionaries evangelists Etc so that the kingdom of God continues to expand currently and Christ is empowered in Hearts esteemed listener many emphasize music and spectacle in churches but they have forgotten about prayer
with understanding under the will of God that breaks the power of evil fourthly the purpose of God thy will be done expresses the desire for the realization of God's Reign absolutely on Earth as it is in heaven the verb literally means let it become it is the translation of the Greek term thma which means the result of the desire and purpose of God that is what he desired God revealed his eternal purpose his will in the Bible and supremely in the person of his son Jesus Christ the subject of the Kingdom must present himself to
his King every day submit to his sovereignty and promise obedience in fulfilling his holy will in this way the kingdom of God is realized among men dear listener we cannot pray thy will be done if we are not willing to submit to God's will we must always ask that God's will be done in our lives families and churches even if part of his will is perhaps incomprehensible to us but God is in control fifthly God's provision give us this day our daily bread these words Express total dependence on God to provide for our needs in
this verse Jesus refers to personal needs for the first time submission to God must come first then we have the right to ask for those things necessary to carry out his will bread represents all our material needs food drink clothing Shelter by inference one can include spiritual bread in this plea but it is not the basic idea when we pray give us this day our daily bread we recognize that God is our sustainer and provider we do not depend on ourselves we trust that God will provide daily what he knows we need let us read
Philippians 4: 19 but my God shall supply all your need according to his riches and Glory by Christ Jesus sixthly God's forgiveness forgive us our debts let us read verse 12 of chapter 6 of Matthew and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors this verse expresses another perennial personal need the Forgiveness of God no prayer is complete without this element our debt expresses what we owe to others Luke at this point uses the term sin and thus we should understand Matthew's term debts Broadus notes that in Aramaic the native language of Jesus and
his disciples the term used for debts was often used for sin in any case we create a debt to God when we fail to do what we ought to do it is a sin of omission the sin of commission is also considered as an offense to God and as a debt according to Luke 11:4 Jesus inseparably links receiving from forgiveness from God and our willingness to forgive others the text indicates that before asking for forgiveness we should have already forgiven our debtors the verb we forgive is in the perfect tense indicating an action that has
already been completed Jesus presented the same principle regarding Mercy in Matthew 5:7 Luke adds to all who owe us avoiding the practice of selective forgiveness anyone who Harbors an unforgiving Spirit towards another should stop before praying The Lord's Prayer if we want to maintain fellowship with our father if Believers are not willing to forgive those who offend them how can they expect to have fellowship with their father who has freely forgiven their offenses verses 14 and 15 reinforce this explanation for if you forgive men their trespasses your heavenly father will also forgive you but if
you forgive not men their trespasses neither will your father forgive your trespasses Jesus warns us about forgiveness if we are unwilling to forgive others God will also not forgive us why because when we do not forgive others we are denying what we have in common as sinners in need of God's forgiveness God's forgiveness is not the direct result of our forgiving act towards others but it is based on our understanding of the meaning of forgiveness it is easy to ask God for his forgiveness but difficult to Grant it to others when we ask God to
forgive us we should ask ourselves have I forgiven those who have hurt or wronged me dear listeners how many Believers pray with bitterness in their heart it is necessary to forgive in order to receive God's forgiveness seventh God's protection lead us not into temptation but Deliver Us from Evil we read in verse 13 and lead us not into to temptation but Deliver Us from Evil for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever amen this expression demonstrates humility a virtue that Jesus showed and demands from the subjects of the Kingdom the phrase
creates a major problem for some in light of James 1:3 how can God lead us into temptation there are two ways to resolve the problem commentator Stags says that Jesus is not suggesting that God leads us into temptation but it is a poetic way of emphasizing the positive assertion Deliver Us from Evil an example would be give us not Darkness but light it would be simpler to consider the term temptation as trial which is one of the basic meanings of the Greek term parmos in Matthew 4:1 it is said that the Spirit Led Jesus Into
the Wilderness to be tempted that is tested it is appropriate that we pray not to be led into trials that we cannot overcome with God's help God certainly allows us to be tested to strengthen our faith and to remind us of our need to walk with his hand firmly in ours Deliver Us from Evil is our acknowledgement of God's Sovereign power over all the forces of the world evil is somewhat ambiguous as it cannot be determined whether it is masculine or neuter in the Greek text therefore some versions translate it as Deliver Us from the
evil one effectively there is no great difference between the two options as the evil one or Satan is the source of all evil referring to everything that could induce us to sin and offend God dear friend ask God to enable you to recognize temptation to give you sufficient strength to face it and to follow God's path eighth God's preeminence for thine is the kingdom and the the power and the glory in the same verse 13 this expression is a total acknowledgement to God because everything done in prayer is for the glory of God recognizing that
the kingdom is God's and Will Never Be Shaken and to him belongs all power forever from eternity to Eternity amen dear listeners I hope this Bible study is greatly edifying for your spiritual life follow this model of prayer and you will pray in the perfect will of God thus we come to the end of this video thank you for joining us thus far God bless you abundantly
