example Toby jumped on the bed here is the subject of the sentence and here is the predicate the action being done by the subject it makes sense and so is a completed thought a compound sentence is a nation of two or more independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction the coordinating conjunctions can be remembered using the acronym fanboys for and nor but or yet and so let's write a compound sentence I'm going to add the independent clause the bed broke to our simple sentence and join them using the coordinating conjunctions so now we have a
compound sentence it has two independent clauses both make sense independently of one another each has a subject and each has a verb stating what the subject is doing here is another compound sentence the gate slams shut and the dog barked let's look at what makes it compound here are the two independent clauses both makes sense independently of one another each has a subject and a verb stating what the subject is doing the coordinating conjunction joining them is and before you go any further in this video use link number 2 from the description below to view
a video explaining compound sentences watch until the two-minute mark Activity one in this activity you will be looking for coordinating conjunctions within compound sentences remembering the acronym fanboys will help you find them all for and nor but or yet and so once you've found the coordinating conjunction in each sentence read the independent clauses that it is joining let's have a go together the sentence is her room was a mess but she was too tired to clean it here is the coordinating conjunction here is the first independent clause and here is the second independent clause here
are the five sentences for you to work through remember find and write down the coordinating conjunction used in each sentence and then read the independent clauses that it is joining use the lesson worksheet from link one to complete your work pause here until you're finished or listen on while I read out the sentences number one mum swept the floor and dad put away the dishes number two Kim loves to cook but she is not very good at it number three Jake doesn't like apples nor does he like oranges number four it was past six o'clock
yet the train hadn't arrived number five he'd better be here soon or we will leave without him let's go through the answers here are the coordinating conjunctions and on either side of the coordinating conjunctions are the independent clauses that have been joined together you activity to in this activity you are going to join simple sentences using one of the coordinating conjunctions here is one as an example the dog knew it was bath time he hid in the garden these are our two simple sentences the conjunctions we can choose from are yet so and but I
don't think yet or but would join these two simple sentences but so makes sense the dog knew it was bath time so he hid in the garden now it's your turn use the coordinating conjunctions to join the simple sentences and make compound sentences remember to use the lesson worksheet if you like pause here until you've finished let's go through some answers number one max had a test the next day so he studied hard number two the fishermen put bait on his hook and cast his line number three Jane kept watering her garden yet no plants
would grow number four would you like pizzas or would you prefer hamburgers number five judy closed the door and she walked outside activity three in this next activity you will be reading sentences and deciding whether they are simple sentences or compound sentences remember simple sentences have one independent clause that is one subject and one main verb if you can find more than one independent clause it will be a compound sentence here's an example the three ugly stepsisters played horrible tricks on Cinderella the subject of the sentence is the three ugly stepsisters I can see that
they are playing tricks there is only one subject and one main verb this means this sentence is one independent clause so it is a simple sentence now it's your turn work out whether the sentences are simple or compound right simple or compound on your worksheet to show your answers how did you go let's check answers the first sentence is simple here is the subject and here is the predicate the second is compound here are the two independent clauses they each have their own subject and predicate and here is the conjunction joining them the third is
also compound it has two independent clauses and a conjunction joining them sentence four is simple one subject and one predicate the last sentence is compound here are the two independent clauses and here is the conjunction activity for in this activity you're going to match simple sentences then use a conjunction to join them together write the new compound sentence on your worksheet I'm going to do the first one for you these two simple sentences look like they match I'll use the conjunction so to join them Hannah was very tired so she slept through her alarm remember
to use a comma before the conjunction pause the video here until you're ready to move on now it's time to check your answers the bird swooped down and it caught a worm it was only a movie but he was very scared all you could have used the conjunction yet it was late so Julie went to bed the boy tried hard but he couldn't answer the question again you could have used the word yet well done on completing another lesson remember to go back to any activities that you had trouble with for a little extra practice
