hi seth shostack here are you a fan of big-picture science you know our weekly science radio show and podcast I hope so this week we're talking about data bias now look if you're a woman your health may be being compromised by the fact that there is bias in the data that describes various diseases conditions and treatments you might say well why is that it's because women the data on women's physiological situation is essentially thrown out of medical research why well because you know women have all sorts of strange hormones coursing through their bodies that the
researchers are afraid are going to mess up the results that's a consequence of all this most medical data is in fact aimed at guys in other words it's taken from guys it applies to guys and if you don't happen to be a guy that's really bad news so how do we deal with this sort of thing what other sort of hidden biases are there due to sex or due to race or other social standings that really shouldn't have anything to do with anything the fact that spacesuits are all designed for men even though we've had
