Bill hardberger police officer found a newborn infant in a dumpster and saved the baby's life 16 years later and no longer a police officer he received an unexpected phone call that changed his life forever Billy hardberger in the things he set out to do he was a very active and curious young man even though he lived in a big city like Portland he was always walking and hiking in the Region's parks and forests he was courageous enough to walk alone through the dense Woods to find streams and waterfalls but was scared to death of encountering
a bear in his path when he finished high school Billy's parents said he should choose a career path he had no doubt he wanted to be a police officer he never was a boy that liked playing with guns or that dreamed of having shootouts with Bandits Billy was more interested in protecting people in the community and how he could make a difference without harming anyone but he was conscious that he would also have to go one-on-one against malicious people if he were an officer even so Billy never abandoned his ideas he learned to shoot and
identify different types of drugs he studied legislation and tried to approach people in the best way possible the young policeman completed all the Academy's rigorous training yet he did not know that life would seriously test his vocation for helping people years passed and Billy harberg continued working the streets of Portland he did routine patrols participated in Narcotics investigations and occasionally had to chase criminals through neighborhoods but the day that changed everything for the policeman started like any other he left Police Headquarters driving a squad car he slowly went through a few neighborhoods observing the community's
morning activities then suddenly when entering a residential area on the city's outskirts the policeman heard a strange sound that caught his attention at that time of day only a few people were on the street the majority had already left to work in a heightened state of alert he decided to follow the sound as he drove the sound grew louder more intense Billy decided to get out of the car to continue the search on foot he didn't know what was happening but it seemed like something worth investigating he followed the sound to a corner well known
for drug trafficking and violence between rival gangs it was precisely that history that concerned the officer as he walked through through the neighborhood he kept his hand close to his holster praying that he wouldn't have to draw his gun Billy was tense he felt that anything could happen at any moment then turning the corner he saw a group of people looking into a dumpster some pointing with their hands over their mouths when they saw Billy they ran towards him all talking at the same time the cop asked one woman to explain what was happening with
tears running down her cheeks she pointed toward the dumpster in the alley Billy walked toward the container imagining that it had something to do with drugs but when he was close the sound he had been following started up again initially he thought it was a cat but now so close to the source it became clear that the situation was much worse than he thought they were the sounds of a baby thrown into the dumpster underneath some trash bags dozens of flies buzzed around the infant Billy was shocked by the scene never seeing a child in
such a state he asked why they had not removed the baby as he climbed into the dumpster to pull the in from the trash the child was frail but strong enough to cry which was a good sign Billy still had a chance to save the baby the officer couldn't believe what he was seeing and could only wonder how someone could be so cruel as to abandon a baby in such a degrading way Billy had seen cases of people leaving babies at fire stations in front of adoption centers or even orphanages but this was the first
time in a dumpster the police officer took a deep breath organized his thoughts and started to act while the baby cried Billy removed the trash from his tiny body and carefully pulled the infant from The Refuge cradling it in his arms though the baby's Vital Signs seemed strong he could sense something was wrong as the baby was breathing very slowly he thought it might be expected under the circumstances after all the baby had been partially suffocated by trash for who knows how long once out of the dumpster he called for an ambulance and continued caressing
and talking to the baby until help arrived finally a few minutes later the ambulance arrived and even though the paramedic started treating the baby Billy felt he couldn't leave that defenseless baby alone again so he did what his heart told him to do he entered the ambulance with the paramedics and went to the hospital entirely focused on the recovering infant along the way Billy figured that he wouldn't be able to care for the baby without giving him a name he deserved to be recognized as an individual thus he began calling the baby Gabriel like the
angel Billy wasn't very religious but thought the name went perfectly with the Purity and sweetness of the little boy in the hospital they carefully examined the baby Billy feared that Gabriel had caught something from spending so much time in the dumpster luckily despite everything they encountered no signs of any illness the doctor only called attention to some redness on the boy's back which could be an allergic reaction it was difficult for the officer to leave Gabriel alone in the hospital to go home to his family but while the boy was in the hospital Billy made
sure to visit him daily slowly day by day Gabriel recovered and gained strength finally some social workers took on his case and in a short while he was adopted by a young couple Mary and James Wood they lived in Eugene a couple of hours south of Portland and fell in love with the little boy the moment they saw him they were informed about Gabriel's abandonment history and that Billy harberg was the officer responsible for rescuing Gabriel and giving his name Mary and James like the name and decided to keep it which made Billy very happy
though satisfied that the little one found a home so quickly he missed being able to see him every day after so many visits Billy developed a strong bond with the baby and a sense of responsibility for him Gabriel grew up in a home full of care and love Mary and James never hid the truth about his being abandoned and adopted he didn't Revolt because of this trauma but constantly wondered about what could have happened that he was left in a dumpster in a dangerous neighborhood on the outskirts of town it was a question that hounded
him but for as many possible explanations he created they could never satisfy his intense curiosity Mary and James knew it was unlikely he would ever know the answer but they wanted to comfort his mind and heart as much as they could so one day they called the police station in Portland and asked for Billy but were informed that he no longer worked there and had become a ranger in the state park system Billy had transferred a short time after the incident with Gabriel in a way the encounter with the baby had awakened in him the
desire to work in a type of policing that combined better with his lifestyle the couple remembered all the concerns of the police officer that day and how he went beyond the Call of Duty to guarantee Gabriel's safety and recovery after much insisting they were given the contact of Captain Phillips a retired officer who knew of Billy's whereabouts I think Billy was more a social worker than a police officer but at least now he's with the the animals in the forest he should be happier taking care of tourists and hikers far from the dirty world of
crime he said to Mary and James before passing them the phone number of Billy's new office over the phone Billy told them how he had never forgotten what happened that day and that he often wondered what had happened to the boy after his adoption so they agreed to meet at Billy's Cottage near the state park the next day it would be a grand reunion Gabriel was ecstatic to finally meet the person who had pulled him from the dumpster but he was also nervous he wanted to know why the policeman was so interested in him when
they finally met Billy was emotional seeing Gabriel so big and healthy so different than that day in the alley he explained to the Adolescent that he had never had children and the closest he had ever come to feeling like a father was when he picked Gabriel up that first time I know it seems silly but something changed at that moment I felt a little of what a father would feel seeing his son in danger he said Gabriel ran over and hugged Billy saying he had to thank him personally the young man took advantage of the
moment to say that he also wanted to meet his biological mother to forgive her personally he asked if the ranger knew anything about his past that could help him find his mother Billy's smile quickly fell he said he had tried to investigate and find out who the mother was he wanted to look in local maternity Wards for women who had given birth recently but Captain Phillips barred him from doing so the captain said that if I wanted to fix the world I should go after real criminals it was because of sarcasm like that that I
left the corporation said Billy but he added today after so much time I don't know if it's possible to find out Gabriel was devastated hearing this he would never see his mother and understand why his life had begun so tragically before the family returned home the young man and Ranger exchanged numbers and agreed to get together whenever possible Billy noticed how important it was to Gabriel to find his mother so he asked asked for a week's vacation to return to the investigation he should have carried out 16 years ago he knew it would be difficult
he'd be starting from zero since the little information he had gathered back then was stored in a box in police archives so he began calling all the maternities in Portland asking for birth records from that period unfortunately some hospitals didn't even have organized files from that time so they just sent the few things they could find he was going to need a lot of luck Billy spent two full days pouring over the documents and another day calling possible leads finally Thursday at 9:00 p.m. he learned of a woman named lilan Hartfield who gave birth almost
2 months before Billy found the baby in the dumpster of all the records hers seemed to be the best bet that same night he called Mary and James Wood explaining that the possible birth mother lived near Cottage Grove perhaps in the forest they would have to go there to speak with her as there was no phone number in her file Mary Mar and James were stunned by the information his Cottage Grove was only a few miles away if true Gabriel may have grown up near his mother without knowing she was closer than he had ever
imagined the following day Billy drove his truck to Eugene and picked up Gabriel from there they went down dirt roads Crossing streams until arriving at a village with a handful of small Huts occupied mostly by Lumber workers after talking with a few people they found Lily in hartfield's house after knocking a woman in in her 30s with a cigarette dangling out of her mouth open the door she looked disgusting and gave a long look at Gabriel Billy presented himself as a park ranger and former Portland Police Officer and asked if the woman had lived in
the city 16 years ago she replied yes but she couldn't wait for the day she could forget that City and everything she had experienced there Billy asked if she could say what happened and the woman confessed that she had been a horrible person who today was nothing more than a poor Widow who deserved her Destiny I cursed myself sir I'm sure that God didn't wait until I died to punish me I married a horrible man did terrible things and now I live here alone at the end of the world with nothing but guilt said Lillian
any chance that one of the terrible things you did involve a little baby asked Billy trying to sound as friendly as possible Lillian opened her reing eyes and knelt grabbing Billy's hand she began to cry saying that at last her time had come did you come to arrest me policeman I told him that we were going to pay for what he did I told him Lillian said her voice breaking as she cried Billy said she needed to calm down and ask what she meant by we were going to pay who was we anyway Lillian explained
that she had married Jeremy Hartfield a kind young man at 18 but he changed into a completely different person when he started cutting timber for the lumber industry when Jeremy found out lilan was was pregnant he was clearly unhappy and suspected the child was not his the pregnancy was a living hell for Lillian who was regularly threatened by jery saying he would abandon her or not let her leave the house alone he constantly pressured her to have an abortion because he didn't want to risk raising another man's child Lillian was afraid of the threat but
she thought that when the child was born Jeremy would see how much the boy looked like him and then his attitude would change maybe they would even go back to being a loving couple like before their marriage but this is not what happened when the baby was born Jeremy forbade her to register the boy with his last name Lillian said that the Man became totally paranoid and decided to steal the boy one night while she and the baby were sleeping when her husband returned home without the child Lilian was desperate and ran to call the
police but he threatened her with a knife saying that it was too late for her to worry about that baby he had done what she didn't have the courage to do when he demanded an abortion What mattered now was that they should leave town as as quickly as possible one year later Jeremy died in a work accident at the lumber mill which relieved the woman of Life under constant threats but the fact is that she never forgave herself for not being able to protect her son instead she developed a deep depression and to this day
wonders what her son would have been like if he had survived this whole thing I am living is a curse officer a curse because of the crime I let happen against my defenseless child and now you are here to arrest me she said at this point in the story she and Gabriel were both crying Billy put his hand calmly on her shoulder and said nobody is going to arrest you Lillian now take a deep breath and pay attention to what I'm going to say because no one is here to play games I met your boy
16 years ago and he is here to meet you lilan raised her head and gazed at Gabriel once again she was in shock and didn't know what to do or think then at last the two embraced after 16 long years the last last time they touched Gabriel was but a newborn baby I survived mom I survived the young man said at the end of the day Billy [Music] [Music] hardberger boy who had nothing but garbage bags around him when he was found he now had two mothers a father and a friend who would do anything
