Every year people create that famous list with their goals. I’m going to the gym, I’ll get better at my job, I’ll take a course and specialize in something, I’ll stop eating chocolate, I’ll stop drinking soda, I’ll stop eating junk food. But why are people not able to accomplish their own goals?
How many times have you created this list but was not able to accomplish? Maybe you are motivated, but why are you not able to accomplish your own list, that you created yourself? Have you stopped to think about why this happens?
You already entered the gym super motivated, you work out, you get enthusiastic, and after a month you don’t go anymore, sometimes it doesn’t even take a week on the first day you are all happy than some time later all that joy ends. Why does that happen? You already started a course or college, took classes and you said: “This will be very important for my future, this will be great for me!
” Than after a while you already gave up? Have you ever had a month in your job where you slammed all the records, got a great commission, hit all your goals. And other months where you worked the same amount of time, but you had a huge fall?
Why does that happen? Why many times motivated people do not win? Listen, motivation is the fuel to something directed, but the pilot that makes you hit your target is Discipline.
Motivation alone does not make you win, discipline will make you reach your goals discipline is what makes you hit your target. More important than motivation is execution, and the execution is having discipline. People today need discipline.
And today we will talk about discipline vs indiscipline. The secret for you to actually hit your goals is discipline. Discipline is the capacity to maintain focus on the work, to accomplish a goal without getting lost.
And of course, without losing motivation. A person that does not presents an excellent performance probably was not focusing on their main goal so they will most likely have poor results, because she did not focus on what she needed to do. Now a days it’s very common to have many things that distract peoples attention.
Every day there are more things that will distract you from your main goal. Blurring your vision from the main goal. Then you lose your discipline, and that is where danger lives.
That’s why its very common today for us to do many things at the same time, and in the middle of them there will be useless things that will take away our time that are completely far from the goals that we’ve established as a personal, professional, spiritual, whatever it is your interested in. Discipline prevents you from bad things and it boosts you to victories. I’ll give you an example that happened in my life.
I had absolutely no habits on drinking water, I used to drink a small amount of water until one day when I had kidney stone, it was an unbearable pain, it hurt a lot and because of that I had to change my habit, and had to discipline myself in drinking water, something so simple. So from that I started to have discipline, every morning I would wake up and drink 500ml of water, inside my car there will always be bottles of water, before I go to sleep I will drink water, during the day I drink water I became discipline. The pain made me have discipline.
Now I want to use the example of an Olympics Athlete, do you think that the motivation of an athlete during a month for example is enough for them to win an Olympic metal? Of course not, they probably train ever since they were a child. They wake up at 5A.
M. They probably give up many weekends because they desire to win, they desire to conquer, motivation alone will not make them win, they know that discipline is fundamental to win an Olympics metal, to win a states regional, to conquer bigger steps. Of that much they are sure, so that is what they do.
If it’s a swimmer for example, he knows he needs to improve his time, so they will train everyday, will repeat many times the same movements, until they get refined, with their focus on the prize, to win to conquer higher levels. That is what they want, that’s their goal, and because of their goal they give up many things and are disciplined towards a bigger objective. Now sometimes a person is on a company for a month, a small amount of time they got a good result, and they already want to be promoted Discipline requires time, and persistence.
Do you know how much time a swimmer trains just to improve one second of his time? There are people that want to jump from the first step to the fifth step fast with just one jump! Do you really think you can pass five steps from a stare case like that?
You will probably fall, because that’s not how you do it. You need to take step by step, have assurance, to be better in each step you take, and keep moving forward, step by step. Until you reach higher levels.
A swimmer knows that every second that he gets better he climbs one more step what his trying to conquer toward What is Indiscipline? Lack of commitment with the rules bad behavior in general causing arguments between all. So the best way for you to fix indiscipline is through punishment.
My punishment when talking about my kidney was the pain, and what punishment can you have to help you execute your job correctly? Or in your relationship? Or your health?
What can it be the punishment? For example, have you seen the law that obligates everyone in the car to use their seat belts, but you have to remember that most people did not use seatbelts, and with that, the cops started to reinforce and apply he law by giving them car tickets, with that punishment people felt the pain in their pockets, so they started to use seatbelts. That’s something very common now, you see people in almost every car using seatbelts.
But it was necessary to have a punishment. Now bringing it to our everyday reality. In your job, are you focused in accomplishing your goals?
How many things distracted you and take you away from the main goal? There is a story that one day a leader asked his follower his employees, did you steal one Real($) from the company? And the employee got surprised and said: Of course not!
I would never do that, no no, I don’t do that. Than he asked: Would you steal a million bucks from the company? And he said: Of course not, I would never do that!
What? I would never steal anything from the company, I don’t do that! Than the leader asked: How much time of your job have you robbed from me by using your personal Facebook?
It might sound ridiculous, but it’s a strong reality. Have you stopped to think about how many times you have defocused from your work toward things that will mess up your own goals? And have you noticed that you’re the one that gets screwed up?
Pay attention to something, today most business are looking more alike, so the ones that will stand out are the ones who have the ability to better execute their job. Let me tell you something else, your competitor is also motivated, your competitor is also trying to win, but what will make the difference between one or the other is who has the ability, discipline to do their job, the one that gets to do it so perfectly that the others can’t follow, and that is what will make the difference. Motivation, you both have, discipline will stand out from the others.
I sometimes see companies doing long meetings, or with big groups doing big speeches, that’s not practical, or functional neither effective. Smaller groups that separate their duties, and put the right people at the right place facilitate the execution of things that will have results. That’s what makes it work, not the other way around, and not big speeches that will make people waste their time and not get anywhere.
It’s fundamental to define each action, separate people to perform tasks. Than how can I perform? Performance is the tactical part of it, the leader needs to understand that.
He needs to be involved in that he needs to know how each person performs and lead them with discipline. But what happens many times is that the leader doesn’t understand anything, they don’t know how to do it, how to perform, then things start to become more distanced, unrealistically, and there is no way to have discipline in a situation like that. I’m not saying that it’s not important to go to college, take a course, play NBA, whatever it is, no it’s fundamental.
But if he doesn’t know how to put that to practice, if he doesn’t know how to put his hand to do it, to teach to delegate, with the right discipline, none of that will give you results. As a leader you need to know how to perform, as an employee you need to know how to perform. Performance is a set of behaviors and techniques that the companies need to dominate to have competitive advantages you only get there with discipline!
So the process needs union, discipline, rules, punishment, and awards. When you punish, you give an opportunity for the person to correct themselves, and develop that other side. Improve that other side.
When you give a prize or a promotion, you make them stand out, giving value to the ones that were more disciplined. That’s being fair, and that is a good thing. That moves the entire team, and that valorizes the best employees.
That creates amazing results. And amazing results creates promotions. A common thing today: Who wants to be promoted?
Everyone! But everyone wants to start in the end Everyone wants to get that beautiful movie that in the end the person is really successful, and say: What a beautiful movie. But people don’t notice the discipline in the beginning of the movie, the pain, the overcomes, everything the person in the movie went through to get there.
Most strategies that goes wrong is not because of the strategies or the idea or the dream itself, but because they didn’t know how to perform, they didn’t know how to discipline the right way. They didn’t know how to communicate and connect all of that in a single and correct way . So every idea, strategy and dream without knowing how to perform becomes useless.
It becomes utopia. I’m sorry to say the reality but there are many people who are trying to grow without performing their duty, role, mission. People keep saying: “Ohh when I get there, I’ll do this, when I reach that post, I’ll do that.
” No! You need to worry about what you do today. Did you perform your job well today?
If you don’t do a good job now how would you have bigger roles, with bigger jobs, with bigger responsibilities if you don’t perform such a small job with excellence. Than you have to ask yourself if what you do today is the best you can do? Is the discipline that you have today is the best for you to walk towards success?
If you watch this videos but do not put to practice, I’m sorry to say this but nothing will ever change. I get very happy today to see hundreds of people sending me messages saying that they got better in life, in their profession, that they show the videos in their jobs for their employees and even send it to their bosses, and their lives have improved. And I get very happy for that because those are my goal with these videos!
It’s to improve and contribute in some way in peoples lives. So for goodness sake put this to practice, experiment, and move forward. Discipline is something that you need to control.
For your own good, for yourself! You do not need to be and you wont be the best in everything. But you can be the best in everything that you do.
And in everything you do, have discipline! And another thing, stop doing it because your leader is looking at you, stop doing it just because the supervisor is next to you, do it for you, for your own good. You are the leader of your own career.
Nobody is going to make you grow, only yourself! It will appear in your numbers, in your character, in your effort, then you will automatically grow! Discipline is a self action.
The more you discipline yourself the more you expand your ability. Repetition brings you closer to perfection or tiredness. In those moments that motivation is important, so that you will not quit, so tiredness doesn’t win.
So when the leader gives you a bigger task he is seeing you as someone with the capacity to perform bigger tasks! And that can be a test for your growth. Well, in that case I’m talking about business that wish to grow.
If you are in a business where you don’t want to grow, no one grows, nothing evolves, then you have to see if you are in the right company. Than you have to think: What do I need to do to get better? If you in this case have done the best choices, what have you done for your health, what have you done to be better professionally, what have you done to grow?
Think about that! Bye bye.
