He looked normal coming into the room nice face Pleasant smile clearly fit however then there was that bright blue spandex suit the red cape and that big S IM blazoned on his chest for what felt like the 10th time I curs my editor for making me do a story on a nut a few days ago she called me into her office you hear about the guy in Superman's suit she said nope I said sounds like a nut Rob to me maybe she said but the city Section thinks there's a story and wants us to pursue
it we found him and he's agreed to an interview guess who gets to do it she added why do I always get the weirdos I asked looking up of course I got it anyway great thought bubbles swam as I stood to greet him hoping it wouldn't be too bad I'm Julia LaVine I said extending my hand Jimmy Corbin he said extending his hand nice to meet you I then brought out my recorder and said I will record today's interview is that All right with you okay he said no problem I fiddled with a microphone as
I tried to sound somewhat professional this is Julia LaVine from The New York Times interviewing Jimmy Corbin k a Superman do you really think you're the man of steel I wish you'd call me Jimmy he said smiling easily I nodded what no why are you wearing a suit I asked his face sober I guess I didn't want to be so vulnerable anymore I curbed my reaction It surprised me someone hurt you badly I asked want to talk about it sighing he began his story okay the F train smelled damp like it usually does during summer
and I was grateful to get off at Queen's Boulevard but once I push my way through the revolving doors into the hot sunlight I felt as though I wanted to go back underground by the time I reached our apartment I was dying for air conditioning Rebecca generally beat me home but when I unlocked the door the Apartment was dark I cooled off and changed the shorts and a t-shirt and headed to the kitchen to make dinner when I heard the front door I hollered hey babe I'm in the kitchen it's hot so I thought a
salad for dinner is that okay she peered around the door can you come talk with me first all right I said and washed my hands before entering the living SL dining room Rebecca sat down on the couch her arms folded and her legs pressed together as if cold off That expression I asked if everything was okay babe she looked up but avoided my gaze as I sat in the armchair God she said this is harder than I thought I was worried what's wrong Rebecca she breathed hard and let it out sharply Jimmy I want a
divorce what I asked is this some kind of joke no she whispered softly I am serious I am filing for divorce I felt like I was in some bad novel I edit without the quick witted responses I had none but why we have a Good marriage I love you I don't want a divorce impatient she shook her head no it hasn't been good for a long time I felt it even if you haven't she leaned forward on the sofa adding it's not your fault Jimmy we've just Grown Apart it happens sometimes I protested but she
raised her hand please don't she said you can't change my mind I'm packing a bag and leaving she went on to say I could not believe it leaving where too can't we talk she sighed I'm staying With a friend until we finalize things just accept it we don't want to make things more complicated than they already are she disappeared into our bedroom then returned in a split second Wheeling her suitcase behind her as if it were all packed Rebecca what about counseling can we find someone she brushed past and opened the door I'm sorry Jimmy
there's nothing to discuss it has to be this way she rolled the bag over the threshold and shut the door Leaving me in stunned silence I returned to the sofa and slumped myself on the cushion the protagonists in the novels that I edit rage drink or turn to someone for intimacy I did none of those things instead I sat in the dark looking for answers to my eding questions I could not make make sense of what happened let alone why nothing especially remarkable was going on between Rebecca and me we attended the same College joined
a group that Remained together through all four years and seldom dated it was more convenient just to hang out as a group during the senior year she began dating someone outside of our Circle and we saw less of her she seemed to be expecting a wedding proposal but he decided to attend grad school in California so they broke up at graduation I was an English major so after college I wanted to work in publishing so I went up to New York and I started looking I had sent 500 rums Out been on 40 interviews I
was waiting tables and I had five friends in a two-bedroom apartment in a crummy neighborhood in Brooklyn I caught a break my grandfather knew a publisher and he called in a favor for me to pursue my dreams so I got this internship at this real publishing company that paid minimum wage so after my day job I would have to wait tables at night the good thing was that I had finally entered the publishing industry And could learn from within back then I used to juggle two full jobs for a meager salary but in your youth
you have the energy and naivity to put up with that kind of treatment longer than any person who lived in actual slavery it was a Tuesday night off from the restaurant and I'd met up with my roommates at a Midtown Manhattan bar to spend some of our earnings on expensive drinks talking loud I saw Rebecca Preston walk in with two friends he Stopped the story can you ommit her name he said why I asked he looked sheepish I'm still trying to figure this out starting a war with her doesn't seem helpful surprisingly my nutcase had
more depth to it than I thought that will make it easier for me I said to her I won't have to find her for her story this is about Superman not his ex all right he said continuing his story I almost knocked the beer from my roommate's hand in my rush to greet her I approached her hesitated wondering if she would be as anxious to see me she looked up and squealed Jimmy and ran to hug me after a hug she stepped back examined me then kissed me I was not sure where that came from
but it was so great I did not care she threw an arm over my waist and introduced me to her girlfriends I in turn dragged them over to meet my roommates thereby earning innumerable brownie points with them since none of us was that com try and Pick up girls Rebecca and I had such a great evening it felt like being back at College finally we called it a night swap numbers and she gave me that promising kiss we met whenever possible this time without a group to distract us our relationship quickly intensified beyond our expectations
finding time and space to be alone together is one of those realities related to Poverty my apartment was a disaster for trist's one or more of the roomies would would Always appear at the worst moments even if I reserved one of the bedrooms someone would occasionally just walk in uninformed of our need for privacy Rebecca's was better just four other females for roommates all respectful of social etiquette it was small though and the walls were thin meaning true privacy was a matter of one's imagination when trying to be intimate Giggles from the door were a
bit unnerving but the play-by-play on our coupling was really Intolerable we overcame any obstacle and talked about finding a place for us but New York City real estate and entry-level salaries made that a far off dream until fate intervened once again an unexpected shakeup at the publishing company's upper echelons led to a sudden opening for a junior editor presumably I impressed them because they offered me the job it paid the same as a really good month waiting tables but it came with benefits so I happily hung up my Uniform and became a book editor no
sooner had I been rejoicing over my good luck than Rebecca struck a similar vein of luck she had been temping for the large law firm of Dennison and loser when they had an opening for a paralal and hired her fulltime since she was low in their hierarchy the pay for law firms is much better than publishing so her starting salary was higher than mine we realized that our combined take-home pay might make our Dream possible we looked Around found a small sixf floor apartment in an Old Forest Hills Building that we could afford because it
was nearly a mile from the subway and took it immediately we went used furniture shopping together and on moving day I got on my knee and gave Rebecca the ring my parents helped me buy she reacted like it was the Hope Diamond our early marriage was good we saw the big apple on a shoe string and enjoyed each other's company far from Brooklyn I eventually lost touch with old roommates but made new friends among Junior editors at the publish house before long a few of us were getting together for lunch or happy hour just like
old times back in college she remained in contact with her roommates yet at the law firm she had not made a lot of friends probably because they came off very stuffy her work wasn't socially rewarding but it was an added feather to her cap Rebecca's legal Aptitude was recognized it led to her receiving more challenging assignments given to her which she enjoyed upon winning she was forwarded and paired with a senior colleague that meant longer hours for her but she welcomed the chance to prove herself and I wasn't unhappy for her that brought me back
to Rebecca's quick exit tonight I retrieved a six-pack of beer and went back to the couch to SAR out what happened I hadn't seen it coming we didn't have that Desperate need to be together as in first love but that doesn't last the jobs have kept us apart more recently but isn't that the price of progress the thing that drove me nuts was that we hadn't fought had no goal or value clashes and nothing to explain her decision I know that she was at times illc contented with our style of living but then so was
I were we not on the way of attaining what we want in the end Rebecca was going that way and once one Of the senior citizen editors retired I'd be in line for a promotion what then was the problem the rehashing of events and the drinking made my emotions chaotic I was sad thinking about the ending of my marriage I loved Rebecca and it pained me to find that Rebecca no longer loved me what was I to say to my parents my parents love her and they have been looking forward to becoming grandparents I thought
how could she be so selfish wasn't she seeing the hurt She was causing especially mine her inexplicable leaving once again threw me into the depression I reached for another beer coming up empty I stumbled into the bedroom and collapsed on our bed undressing it I thought drunkenly it doesn't matter that's what beer does great demand for Relief wakes me up in the early morning forcing me into the bathroom it was such Agony relieving my bladder that I almost cried out once and for all once done it got me Wide awake my stomach felt like battery
acid yet it also felt like I hadn't eaten in a day which was nearly true cursing I threw in the towel and got up showered and shaved went to the subway station having breakfast at a coffee shop on route that had one other customer I was also the first one in the office I buried myself in work but my mind kept on going back to what happened the fact that she didn't know her reasons for leaving nod at me feeding my Anger over time soon enough I convinced myself that answers were necessary and decided to
act Rebecca and I never visited each other at work our jobs were sacrosanct today things were different I knew her lunch schedule so I timed my arrival to just before I even took a cab in order not to arrive late I walked into the office of Dennison and loer and didn't recognize the receptionist which wasn't surprising since I hadn't been there many times hi I said I'm Jimmy Corbin Rebecca Preston's husband I'm here to take her out to lunch the girl at the desk looked up startled I'll call her to let her know you're here
no no I hastened to say it's a surprise I'll get she looked uncertainly at me then but I walked to the door confidently and she buzzed me in I walked down the aisles past inquisitive stairs but didn't pay any attention as I addressed Rebecca's cubicle she was still talking to another woman but stopped Midway turned pale and Gazed at me what you doing Jimmy she said you can't be here I'm working I'm here I said strongly and I won't leave until you explain to me why you abandoned me to my own devices last night keep
it down she hissed the red color of her face I told you last night why I was leaving the more and more angry I became you offered no explanation just meaningless platitudes she looked around and I saw that a small crowd of onlookers had gathered around There were people in the vicinity who formed some sort of semicircle as if in support of her I didn't feel exactly confident yet I couldn't back down facing the inevitable confrontation Rebecca grasped the opportunity want to know why I left she said loudly I'm leaving you because you are nobody
you are a weak man who clings to that wretched job of yours and waits for promotion when somebody dies you're dull you've grown fat and sloppy that's why I'm going I had stood up in utter shock my mouth open it was like a slap right in the face who is she but I protested weakly you never mentioned it before well I just did lose her she shot back and guess what you suck in bed and not the good kind good one someone exclaimed from the crowd I was so shocked at hurt well screw you I
exclaimed she laughed you you work in publishing and that's all you've got pathetic ow that hurt exclaimed another and they all Burst into laughter embarrassed I shot her a dirty look and stroe out as the laughter stayed with me in the reception area the receptionist turned around found in Surprise aren't you going to lunch with Rebecca she asked noi oh she smiled have a nice day the door opened and I immediately hurried inside to escape I couldn't get a lick of work done so I called the office to say that I wasn't feeling well then
after taking the subway I headed to Queens on my way home I changed into jeans and a t-shirt then to Flushing Meadows and the World's Fair sight I sat by the uni fear staring in that big globe in awe from what just happened I had never known Rebecca to complain about the accusations she levied today ambitious yes but smart enough to recognize the Rarity of publishing opportunities what's wrong with being patient that was a low dig about my performance she never complained I was Sure she enjoyed it if she hadn't been satisfied then I would
gladly have done more if she'd spoken up still her insult Shook Me profoundly I started to notice a roll of fat around my waist I had let myself go I used to be in good shape back in college but I couldn't deny the thickness around my middle anymore beer and bar food I thought I vowed to join a gym and give up drinking alcohol it wasn't until this harsh evaluation from Rebecca that I realized I didn't want Her back though I could show her that I may have changed had she given me a chance I
took my smartphone and found a gym nearby it was not cheap but it was possible thanks to some savings on beer I showed up to work the next morning with my gym bag and proceeded to work out every day for 2 weeks yes my muscles were sore but not as much as my ego and heart had been despite Rebecca's brutal nature I couldn't just abruptly stop loving my wife of a short time the Junior editors would invite me out in the evenings with continued pressure to participate I kept making excuses I didn't want to say
I'd stopped drinking started going to the gym every day or really why I was foolish to think that I could keep the charade up candy called me one afternoon to say I had a visitor when I went I found a man I was sure I didn't know he smiled and asked Jimmy Corbin yes I asked he handed me an envelope Mr Corbin you have been served Then he bowed to candy and left candy had been through a few husbands so knew what had happened my face spoke for itself oh Jimmy I'm sorry she said I
didn't know you and Rebecca had problems I nodded and began to walk silent back to my desk it wasn't a surprise really but somehow that divorce petition coming through was different it was 5:00 and the envelope still sat unopened on my desk when my three best friends showed up come on Jimmy Marie dragged my arm You're coming with us I tried to protest but the trio would not relent and I had no will to resist when I ordered a club soda with lemon at the bar they exchanged glances but nobody spoke Jacob finally jumped in
okay Jimmy Cy told us what happened today spill it what happened with you and Rebecca I did not that I intended to tell my friend Secrets it's just there is so long it's been pent up inside me and the minute I opened up to them everything flowed out Including my most embarrassing moment with Rebecca in her office that Tommy said I bet she's with Connor ouch he looked up glaring at Marie why' you kick me I tuned out their interchange and turned my attention to Tommy shacked up with Connor you mean Connor James at her
Law Firm what's he got to do with Rebecca I asked after seeing him with her it was obvious out that hurts Marie don't you know when to keep quiet Marie hissed at Tommy who was rubbing his shin She turned to me then apologetic I'm s HEI we three had dinner in March went to a bar afterwards and caught them together the way it was going on anyone could tell what was happening I made quick calculations no that wasn't her she was in a night course in March oh yeah said Jacob she was taking night course
then he saw the angry look in Marie's face and retreated back saving his foot she turned to him and exclaimed don't you think before speaking turning Towards me she said Jimmy it is not once alone they they have not been discreet I was very angry and humiliated at that moment you knew and didn't tell me what kind of friends are you Marie took my hand come on Jimmy wasn't easy we didn't know the truth and didn't want to spread rumors they were so obvious we thought you might know you thought I knew and that I
was cool with it I exclaimed in shock this is unbelievable I turned toward the door as Jacob grasped my arm Honestly if one of us told you you just deny it and hate us you know it's true everyone hates the messenger I knew he was right but it did nothing to ease the ache within it was bad enough I had been humiliated in front of Rebecca's colleagues worse that I had been betrayed in front of my friends it was the final blow Jimmy looked up embarrassed yet defiant that's when I decided to wear the Superman
suit it took me into a story so much that I had To shake off the Daydream I'd been dumped before and yes it hurt but what Jimmy was describing was much more painful and humiliating I flipped into reporter mode but I still don't get it Jimmy how did you go from abandoned husband to Superman he continued his story I wasn't sure about going back to work so I tried to push it all aside by going to the gym it did not work that morning all I wanted was to go into a hole or be another
person I gave up and Just left I saw a bookstore with books and posters related reled to superheroes as a child I loved comics and cartoons and watched most of the superhero movies and as is expected from every child I wanted to be like them a superhero all these memories just came in my despair I remembered how great I felt how much fun I'd had last Halloween while attending a costume party as Batman my mask and suit were lowbudget but that didn't matter now I envied Superman his Invulnerability after my pain pain and humiliations that
seemed incredibly appealing everything then just fell into place in my head I was miserable and I wanted my life to change I felt feeble and helpless I wanted to be the strong one more importantly I felt so helpless and wanted not to get any more hurts I sound crazy probably I knew that Superman's suit was not going to stop bullets but that feeling it gave me just that feeling even though it wasn't real Meaning I just felt so bad that I need to do something even crazy sounding to feel better anyway it just seemed like
the right thing to do at the time so I did it when he was silent I decided to change subjects so how did you get your costume he L up between my apartment and subway stop was a tailoring shop run by an elderly seamstress golden Mermelstein I stopped in to describe what I wanted she listened silently then took my measurements as if it was routine you Should come back in a week she said in her yish accent that's how I got my costume he concluded she did great he stood and turned so I could see
Mrs Merlin's work and my first thought was confirmed Jimmy was fit the stretchy fabric was hugging him tight and I took a moment to appreciate the craftsmanship he coughed making me realize I was staring I snatched my pad and consulted my notes can you tell me about the first time you wore the suit he sat down the Next Saturday I W out for the first time it was the scariest night of my life he Suddenly grinned at me getting into it the first time wasn't easy I now sympathize with women in panty hoes but once
I had it on it felt good like athletic wear besides I figur it would take forever to take off so I might as well enjoy it walking to the subway several people stared but nobody said a word New York is a city of characters however while standing waiting for the Subway on the platform people moved away from me nobody sat next to me or even looked at me inside the subway car finally a little girl riding with her mother and about 6 years old stared at me and suddenly asked are you Superman I watched her
mother freak out and I kept my arms at my sides and smiled at the little girl no I said I just like dressing up as Superman and before her mom could tug her away I asked do you like dress up the girl was looking at me Serious oh yes I like dressing up like a princess she piruet like a ballerina I smiled and started questioning her about it her mom watched closely but I could see she slowly eased off in her tension other people in the car were watching us too and I did catch a
smile or two the girl and I talked until my stop slowly I got up from my seat I got to go now I waved goodbye bye bye princess she waved bye super man coming onto the platform the girl's mother smiled at me and I Nodded back I was feeling great a more significant test lay ahead and I resolved to try the sensation of being in a crowd so to a popular night spot I would go at the door I stepped back feeling intimidated by the crowd then I thought to myself Superman wouldn't be afraid he
would walk in like he owns the place I opened the door and stepped into the waiting room as I approached the bar the murmur of conversation lowered around circles of people a murmur Whispered through the silence as I made my way by their faces thrown open to speculations about me the bartender greeted me with a familiar order it was as if the world had suddenly just become normal club soda and lime I said and no eyebrow arched I was sipping my drink when a guy tapped my shoulder next to me and said are you in
a movie I just wanted to try something different I replied he said okay and turned away it was a relief normally introverted I did Feel that I needed to push myself a bit more Dy is you like Superman movies I asked and in no time we were talking about comic book hero movies people joined in and we had fun debating action heroes the woman next to me took a picture of me and I was shocked at the late hour the hours had Fairly flown by I paid the bartender left a nice tip and turned towards
the exit someone shouted good night Superman near the door and others joined in I turned waved and Flourished my Cape to laughter and cheers nothing else occurred on the subway to Queens but I felt so fine walking into my apartment that I just couldn't take off the Superman suit it wasn't until later in bed that I realized it was the first evening I hadn't thought of Rebecca I make it a point to where the suit nearly every weekend and most week nights people seemed to like it and I didn't feel as vulnerable became a great
conversation Starter too Jimmy grinned and I smiled back at him at his words I felt a rearing of happiness for the lad but a premonition that his superhero life wasn't all milk and honey still lingered only time would tell all right that's enough for now I said we shall reconvene for further questions later but we have to go out to the park for pictures my editor arranged for a staff photographer to photograph Jimmy in his costume in Central Park where nice backdrops Offered good photo opportunities Jimmy often visited there so we hoped to catch him
interacting with people we hailed a cab and the driver stared at Jimmy's costume to my surprise they started discussing capes my father wore a cape in the Old Country the driver said and Jimmy mentioned that they were quite comfortable I tried not to roll my eyes but the fact that Jimmy shook the Cab's hand and bit him a good day was kind of charming the cabbie warm response surely Meant Jimmy had made a new friend interest I was going to suggest placing Jimmy on one of the bridges within the park but the photographer decided on
a more striking image utilizing a granite outcropping if you stood at just the right angle you could see the Dakota Towers above the trees in the distance Jimmy seemed to enjoy himself easily moving and posing as the photographer asked of him he's at home in that Costume and hey superman shouted a childish voice and I watched Jimmy play he jumped off the boulder to GRE meet a group of prepubescent boys calling some by name soon they sat in a circle around him listening to a madeup Superman story a maternal voice Came Calling from the field
the boys leaped up running and waving to Jimmy sorry about that he said as he entered I have met those kids here before so I could not ignore them I like children I'd love to have a few of my Own he said with a grin his smile faded At The Mention Of His failed marriage and I felt for him but then he lost it again and his smile returned I inquired of the photographer have you got what you needed definitely she said the rock poses were great I also got many good shots while he told
stories to the kids she looked at me and whispered is that guy real I shook my head I wish I knew I returned to his side you were great with the kids and it seems things went well In the bar that night do people ever laugh at you or make jokes I asked oh sure he said loads of times I just wave and smile and they leave me alone he eyed me closely I cop by asking myself what would Superman do if someone called him names he would never be bothered because he would know his
value and their words would just Ricochet off like bullets I had doubts what if people avoid someone in costume does that not put them off I guess he replied but if They don't want me around that's okay I'm not imposing I'm just getting by differently noting my skepticism he brightened I've got an idea are you free tomorrow night when I said I had none he got very excited and exclaimed instead of another interview why not join me we'll go somewhere for you to see yourself he leaned in enthusiastically come on it'll be fun what do
you have to lose it was more than what I had expected but I knew what my editor Wanted and the enthusiasm was contagious all right I'll do it I said and he was genuinely pleased that night in my apartment I explained my weird interview to my roommate Terry she agreed he sounded like a nutcase when I said I had agreed to go out with him the following night she rolled her eyes come on Julia she said can't you find a normal guy I laughed but felt stung by the words I had some bad experiences and
Terry knew that I was being cautious she thought of Herself as my guardian angel rather than just my roommate and I liked that she cared I was taken back the next night when my cab dropped me off at that bar to meet Jimmy and I only fell half as well knowing he wasn't even there I heard my name and saw Jimmy running towards me in his Superman suit this is going to be fun he grinned taking my hand and leaving me inside the atmosphere around us changed the moment we walked in fingers were pointed at
me And people started talking I felt embarrassed then but Jimmy dived into the crowd pulling me towards a bar the bartender realized Jimmy was there and yelled Superman is in the house Applause and cheering filled the room driving the energy of everyone there into high gear Jimmy then asked me a second time what I wanted ordered a glass of white wine for me and a club soda for himself when the drinks arrived he grasped my hand and pulled me over to a throng on one end of The room hands lunged out to pump Jimmy's hand
or give him high fives and I attracted many curious stairs as it suddenly hit me that accompany Jimmy meant accompanying a minor celebrity Jimmy dove into conversations like a kid jumping into a pool on a hot day he effortlessly engaged with everyone around and I admired his ease from where I sat observing what happened I observed two things first while he participated in the conversation he did not dominate It he kept asking for others opinions once in a time and not agreeing he changed to others he was always nice and beaming with a smile and
giving very positive feedback so people's self-esteem is boosted he kept me engaged although I was being such a passive player and appreciated his sensitivity and he was just effortless to be around rather quickly I realized that Jimmy did not stay in one spot for any period of time longer than necessary He flowed through the crowd greeting new participants as they joined the interaction yet easily moved on it surprised me that I enjoyed the evening that night I was there for observation merely for my article but the events proved otherwise I participated much more than ever
before and indeed had fun also I drank lots of white wine that helped to relax the conversation probably later that night late a fine looking blonde began to push through the Crowd toward us she pointed at me and said to Jimmy is she your date Jimmy just smiled and said I don't know Julia are you my date I blushed and said no just a friend good the blonde said then boldly reached out and touched Jimmy's trunks why don't we go to my place and see if you're really the Man of Steel she asked her voice
very suggestively delivered Jimmy's face colored even further and he pushed her hand away sorry but I'm busy tonight her face fell But she was not ready to give up we could do that too she tossed back her head at Jimmy as he smiled and shook his head again it's your lost superhero she said over her shoulder and walked away on her heels looking petulant Jimmy breathed quietly into my ear the natives are getting restless he said with a grin time to call it a night the interlude immobilized me and the element of surprise overwhelmed me
jealous of that loud aggressive woman I was relieved When Jimmy took my hand and led me to the door then my dread did come true when a large drunk man stepped into our path sneering at Jimmy as if he'd been insulted so you're the who thinks he's a superhero he shouted silencing the crowd huddled behind Jimmy I saw two tough looking men closing in on the Giant and rummaged threw my purse for my cell phone prepared to dial 911 if things got out of hand Jimmy kept us calm I'm in a Superman's suit he said
But I am no superhero the big man squinted if you're not a superhero why wear a Superman suit he asked belligerently really want to know Jimmy asked Gravely and suddenly I was all ears letting his thoughts dance in my head was he trying to provoke the big man I was scared I wouldn't ask if I didn't want to know the big man bellowed Jimmy puts himself down by saying my wife cheated left me and humiliated me that is a reason for wearing a suit to Protect myself from that pain again then suddenly the giant wrapped
his arms around Jimmy and hug him I understand my wife did that too he let Jimmy go put a hand on his shoulder and said take care with that he moved aside giving us clearance to move through the doorway toward the crowd waiting for us Beyond a voice yelled out good night Superman and was joined by others as we took our leave on the sidewalk I was shaking oh my God Jimmy I thought he would kill you I said my voice quivering Jimmy looked at me quite seriously I thought so too he said then he
smiled and said let's eat I followed him to an allight Diner and after we ordered I started to babble why did you say that to him I asked how did you know he'd react like that Jimmy shook his head I didn't know his plan I thought Superman would simply tell the truth and then see what transpired yeah I said but Superman was invulnerable that guy could have killed you Jimmy Smiled wistfully you're right but I've been hurt before so what's one more time he thought I bit into my sandwich savoring the silence as a reflective
tool I realized how injured this man was and how much he relied on his costume for defense I changed the subject I was impressed at how easily you addressed everyone you should run for office no he replied I'm not interested I just teach myself how to enjoy being in the company of others I shook my head how many in The bar did you know I asked he smiled none of them the only guy I recognized was the bartender that was hard to believe how can you chat so easily with strangers he shook his head you
know Julia I'm shy funny but always have been in school I clung to a crowd simply due to not feeling sufficient in myself to be alone and reacting to what others said his smile faded at the corners of his mouth things only worsened for me however after Rebecca left me I wanted To avoid everything its life and find myself a secluded life but the Superman suit that my father Made For Me enabled me to face the crowd I thought the way Superman would act and attempted to act like him the image of Jimmy being shy
and hesitant simply didn't mesh with the extrovert I had witnessed only minutes before so I pressed him on the topic maybe the suit helped you come out of your shell I said but that doesn't explain how you learn to talk with People like that it is nothing particular he said I like people but I never felt comfortable with them now I feel this and I want to know what they think and feel I'm having good time now and I want them to two I didn't respond but all I could thinks was there's a lot more
to this guy than I thought a woman entered the diner and I felt compelled to readdress my experience with the predatory blonde turning to Jimmy I had to ask him is this a frequent occurrence He was ashamed yeah he said a few times that's happened did you go home with any I asked he looked away from me a few times maybe well how was it I demanded before I could close my mouth what was I thinking asking a question like that before I could backtrack he replied the first time I hadn't been with a woman
since Rebecca and I was pretty eager he laughed later she said I was faster than a speeding bullet it got better after that he said innocently I thought about Superman's control and the ladies like me more but eventually hooking up lost its appeal he looked at me with pain in his eyes I'm old-fashioned I wanted just one woman if she was right I thought it was Rebecca but I was mistaken he looked over at the clock do you need to head out he asked I was shocked at how late it was he walked me down
to the curb and flagged a cab there are real advantages to the cape the cabie stared and Jimmy helped me aboard thanks Julia he said I Know this was for your article but I enjoyed being with you tonight he shut the door and as the cab pulled away I turned and saw him standing on the curb the cabbie turned around who is that he asked I'm not sure I know I said Terry was waiting for me at home dying to hear about my evening when I had finished describing my Adventures she wanted to know my
impressions of Jimmy upon my saying he had some serious injuries she really looked at me the poor man may Have taken a beating over his ex-wife but but he's not some lost kitten Julia you don't need to give him shelter and a bowl of milk you know I know I said but difficult not to think about him and his troubles I sat down to write my article about Jimmy and found it hard to start it would be easy to recount the experiences that befell Jimmy and my observations at the park and at the bar would
make some good copy it's harder to capture what was really going on within Him however readers would want to know why a guy like this seemed so normal to be acting irrational I rebooted several times before I found a lead I liked superhero with a broken heart captured the contradictions best and once that was set the rest flowed easily I thought the assignment would be a waste of time when I got it and nobody would take my work seriously having survived my wild time with Jimmy and having spent a whole day trying to Encapsulate his
inner turmoil I guarded My article like my own baby I did not want it spiked so I handed it in to my editor rather apprehensively an hour later she did call got any more she asked what do you mean I asked irritably it's the right length I'd edited the article to fit the City Section I see myself as a serious writer and know that if I don't edit some other editor may end up mangling my work she said it's not the right length for the Sunday Magazine leaving me gasping Sunday articles can be so much
longer and get more attention staying online for a week I was in Pleasant shock but still shocked I went back to my computer and pulled up all of the material I had edited I reworked it with the space from a news article into a feature piece I kept my lead but I allowed the story to take a more organic turn free from the inverted pyramid style I completed it by day's end and my editor was happy this Is really good Julia she said and it's in time for Sunday's Edition I felt like I did a
home run that evening I called Jimmy to check how the Sunday Times magazine was so it won't go into Daily News he asked is that good or bad it's a good thing I said you'll see after hanging up I regretted my decision I submitted a positive human interest story about Jimmy which I thought captured him very well but I feared that a higher-up editor would turn it around Into a humor piece that made fun of or ridiculed him I had seen similar situations earlier and the aftermath could be really harsh if that happened he would
believe I meant it that way the more I thought about it the more I was regretting calling him objectivity in reporting requires that the reporters keep a distance from their subjects otherwise they cease to be reporters I couldn't help liking Jimmy and I would feel terrible if my article turned into A slash and burn piece besides I would most likely never see him again although it would be nice to think that it was possible I hadn't flipped through the magazine but when my times came I flipped quickly through the magazine part and there he was
Jimmy's picture grinning at me from on top of a boulder in Central Park the headline reading the Brokenhearted superhero from Queens OMG my stories on the cover I flipped to it under my name And started reading thankfully it wasn't some kind of parody in fact they used it almost exactly as I wrote it they included my whole submission what a rush I sat in my PJs feeling pretty good for a reporter Landing a cover story was the kind of thing that could make you dream yet amazingly I found myself wishing that Jimmy would read it
and say he liked it where did that come from I wondered she shook her head after she had read the article you're doing it Again Julia that guy's damaged I don't want you to get hurt I dismissed her on Monday I got loads of congratulatory calls not from Jimmy I had nothing to expect his call and my anxiety just grew all day through perhaps he reacted differently to the article resented my balance portrayal or wasn't interested in talking with me again I was so indulging in self-pity when my phone rang it was Jimmy hey Julia
he said sorry I didn't call sooner things are Crazy my work friends can't believe it's me even my mom in Illinois called worried that I've lost my mind he continued talking while I attempted to cut in he paused for breath and I seized the moment what did you think of the article I asked oh it was he stammered then uttered a few words to another person that was my boss I have to go can you have lunch with me on Wednesday to discuss it further um sure I guess I said trying not to sound eager
great he Said naming a place on 8th Avenue near my office see you Wednesday at noon and then he was gone I hung up and wished he had time to discuss the article more but he was clearly pleased at least he does want to catch up again I turned back to my screen and saw a small smile in the reflection I was at the restaurant early on Wednesday and was taken back when Jimmy was already there dressed in his Superman suit he was already talking to a man but as soon as he saw me he
let The man go with a handshake and hurried toward me he kissed me on the cheek and led me back to the table who was that I asked that's the owner of the restaurant he saw me in my suit and came over to talk with me Jimmy said casually as if this were the normal course of action for his life his face showed much animation you won't believe what's happened to me he burst forth boisterously as if he were a child I told them at work how surprised they Were to read about me they actually
forced me to wear the suit on Tuesday I didn't want to as usually I want to be taken seriously fearing their reaction however they pleaded with me so I said what the heck when the waitress brought our food he paused and went on with the story now nibbling Tuesday morning my friends just went wild when my boss came but I was so scared all she did was stare at me and say you can wear that but if it affects work you'll have to Change I was shocked I didn't expect that having been sure she would
freak out I was emboldened by the calm nature of her reaction later that afternoon I made a daring move and I did something something I had been wanting to try when I put on the suit he inclined forward excitement beaming in his voice Publishers get so many manuscripts submitted every week unsolicited from an aspiring writer of one sort or another and those usually drop straight into the Slush bile to be ignored or sent out with a generic rejection letter he said so I decided as a diversion I started to read through some of them then
one really caught my eye new Authors usually disappoint with grammar and plot quality but this was so much better and I felt it had promise I was too afraid to take it to Mrs Grom however and I'm not quite certain even now why I was since junior editors are not really supposed to promote work upward he smiled at me on Tuesday I played Superman after lunch I gave her the manuscript when she told me to stop wasting her time I said Mrs Grom just take this home and read the first few chapters if I've wasted
your time you should sack me I clearly am not cut out for this job I tried to hide my reaction but my stomach clenched Jimmy's description fit my dreams of being a serious writer I had written one novel and never submitted it knowing it was not good enough I said you didn't Actually do that did you Jimmy you love your job that's a big risk he beamed I believe in it it's better to risk than fear failure what happened I asked nothing yet he said Mrs grome is out of town and turns Friday AM my
God I said I'd be a wreck waiting to hear her thoughts I wanted to lunch with you today for more pleasant thought I blushed despite myself knowing it was flattery but nice to hear nonetheless then he said something that made me feel Even better I wanted to see you for another reason too juli ARS is hosting a cocktail party this Saturday for the publishing industry and I'd love for you to come with me would you like me to be your date I asked surprised yes if not in a relationship you're welcome to come I am
not in a relationship but yes I'd be happy to go with you I stuttered fine he said pushing the invitation across the table to me meet me at the lobby at 8:00 I nodded struggling to find the Words as a covert way to show my awkwardness I began staring at my watch oh I need to get back to work I sat there scanning the area for our waitress so she could bring in a check again however the owner comes over to our table not often we have a superhero here he said with a smile your
lunch is on the house Jimmy thanks him warmly embracing as men do before we leave the apartment that was amazing I said to Jimmy I've never seen a restaurant cover A lunch bill like that you should hang out with superheroes more he said winking at me Jimmy walked me back to my office waving and nodding to other strangers speaking to him as he passed and just then he turned and said at the door thanks for the great art and lunch no time to react the kiss came seemingly shocked I stood there and watched as he
turned and disappeared into the afternoon light remember Saturday night he smiled and then he was gone what just Happened I asked myself as I came back to my desk I found it impossible to attend to my afternoon work on Saturday I felt oddly nervous for the cocktail party it's like getting ready for prom I scolded myself but then remembered I never attended my prom because I didn't have a date I reached for my best little black dress and high black ankle strap heels looking in the mirror I wish I was a bit bigger on top
but my legs looked good enough so I decided to go with it Terry surveyed me once then nodded her head in approval have fun sweetie but take care she told me seriously yes Fairy Godmother I said smiling I'll be home by midnight she shook her head but gave away a glimpse of the smile it was at the waldor Historia so I took a cab rather than risk sweating on the subway in the lobby I did not see Jimmy at first but then some crowd parted and there he was in the Superman's suit I had assumed
that he would wear a suit or Tuxedo for such an important event but if he was brave enough to go in costume I could be brave enough to join him he jumped up when he saw me and came rushing over I don't remember seeing you in a dress before you look good he said I knew he was just being nice but it was good to hear anyway we took the elevator to the crowded Empire Room where people were dining drinking and talking in an instant a murmur came about as Jimmy and I entered and before
we could get drinks We were surrounded by others asking questions and chatting it was amusing to me to see this refined response to Jimmy when he was all dressed up like Superman and I was amazed at how easy it was with strangers yet simultaneously I wanted to be alone with us being with a celebrity I had to keep telling myself that I was somewhat responsible for his Fame three people our age ran over chattering with Jimmy and teasing him about work I stepped back to let them talk but he Pulled me close hey everybody he
said this is my date Julia LaVine the reporter from the times he turned to me these are people from my office Jacob Tommy and Marie he said introducing them I shook hands with the two fellows feeling particularly good when I caught them checking me out but when I greeted a whiff of jealousy came from her eyes I thought to myself I bet she wanted Jimmy to ask her out feeling smugged to be on his arm a few more minutes of talk and The three waled over to the or derves table to refresh their plates I
seized the opportunity to pull Jimmy to one side so what was all that about something big happening at your office I asked I almost forgot the big news Mrs Grom called me in and I was afraid I was going to get fired on the contrary she loved my manuscript saw the potential in it that's terrific Jimmy I exclaimed I couldn't believe your gamble paid off she praised my initiative to take risks Saying that's the senior editor they need instead of being fired I got promoted in a big raise congratulations Jimmy I exclaimed embracing him he
embraced me back but then suddenly became stiff what is it I asked it's Rebecca my ex he stated quietly she's coming and that's Connor James the guy she cheated with why are they here I asked I should have guessed she'd be here but I didn't think of it he said her firm does much legal work with Publishing I saw a pretty blonde woman in an evening gown accompanied by a man in a tuxedo her scowl suggested that she had eaten something sour she began speaking furiously even before she reached us Jimmy I just can't believe
you wore that ridiculous Halloween costume to this party you're humiliating yourself Jimmy crossed his arms and scowled what's wrong Rebecca why does it matter what I wear you look ridiculous in that suit and it's embarrassing for You to be here like this with important people I'm sorry you're embarrassed but I'll wear what I want said Jimmy and the suit isn't patted Rebecca reached out and touched his bicep giggling in embarrassment before quickly pulling her hand away she tried changing the subject turning toward me you haven't introduced me to your companion she said excuse me he
said dripping with sarcasm Rebecca this is Julia LaVine from the nyt who did my Sunday magazine story she looked At me with a sneer how appropriate she said a junior editor at a publishing house and a reporter for a newspaper two losers from two dying Industries then before either of us could react she grabbed her date's arm and said loudly come on Connor let's get out of here here Jimmy started stalking after her but I clutched his arm please just don't make a scene I begged what do she think who cares for one second I
thought he would pull away from me and run after Her but then the muscles eased fine Julia I let it slide T jod she really gets to me I haven't seen or spoken to her since she left thinking she couldn't upset me anymore yet in under 2 minutes she insults us both and I'm powerless I could feel the hesitation but knew it was essential to speak my fears do you still love her Jimmy I asked he was shocked oh God no I'm upset because she cheated lied and left me and yet I feel guilty then
she shows up tonight acting Like it's my fault I can't change anything he's still hurt clearly but I felt relieved he had moved on from Rebecca I tried to shift his attention to our work we mingled I had champagne he had soda water and we ate plenty of or derves we danced and then began to feel better at last Jimmy said I'm ready to go if you are I nodded and he took me downstairs to the cab I can afford this more often now he smiled I had ridden up to my apartment thinking about tonight
I Liked Jimmy actually I admired him I had understood how he'd been hurt by Rebecca he told me once or twice but tonight I felt the lingering hold she had on on him what a I thought wishing I could help strong weak man protection was Rising within me for this contradictory man maybe it was the courage of his Superman costume but when we got to my place I invited him up he replied with complete seriousness yes very much so I opened the door to my Dark apartment and whispered my roomie is probably asleep so we
need to be quiet as I reached to turn on the light switch his hand overrode mine he easily scooped me up and asked which one is your bedroom I was only able to point I'd hoped as much when inviting him in but hadn't thought he'd read me so well taking charge the whole while now I was glad he did he placed Me Gently in my bed and then a crazy night followed when I woke up I reached for him but his side Of the bed was empty I suddenly felt overcome with dismay thinking that he
must have snuck out but he soon appeared again probably needing to go to the bathroom relieved and happy he crawled back under the sheet and fell asleep again I got up showered made the coffee and started getting breakfast ready listening to the shower again I knew he too was awake soon he appeared at the door the expectation of the smell of food a grin on his face I had just made Him a plate when my roommate emerged in her robe and slippers Jimmy I said this is my roommate Terry Feldman Terry this is Jimmy Corbin
they shook hands and after she poured herself a cup of coffee she sat down and continued to stare at Jimmy so intently that he couldn't help but notice I guess you're not used to seeing someone wearing a Superman costume he said good-naturedly I'm not used to my roomie bringing home a man she replied Jimmy chuckled while I felt Embarrassed blushing it was raining on Sunday and I asked Jimmy to stay in while Terry went out he agreed and we spent a domestic morning on the couch reading the paper I felt warm ignoring warning signals in
my head as I enjoyed myself Jimmy laid the paper down and said what's the deal with your roommate she does look older are you related no I laughed she acts like my mother sometimes she adopted me at work and invited me to move in when my boyfriend Kicked me out Terry's been looking out for me since he nodded after several minutes he asked you know all about me now let me hear your story I refilled my cup of coffee and commenced not much to say here I was a tom boy uninterested in girly stuff I
developed late so the boys just ignored me through high school that didn't bother me I was into writing writing copy prolifically for the school newspaper and annual I already developed my figure in college and boys among the Students started flirting with me but it was so difficult because of my shyness lack of experience and most guys never waited until one felt more comfortable the only free time time was spent writing apart from college paper I tried to write the Great American novel unsuccessfully I didn't date much but had one stormy romance which ended badly when
he dumped me for someone else my senior year then in college I began working with my local newspaper with Great reputation later this helped me to land a job at the times when my boyfriend broke up with me Terry supported me and that's my story Jimmy and I just stayed home in my apartment all afternoon and eventually made love once more which was just as good as the first time he said that he needed to go back home and get ready for work on Monday he leaned in and kissed me saying I'll call you I
wanted to believe him but my last date had said the same thing And never called I really hoped Jimmy was different this had been the best weekend of my life and I wasn't ready for it to end Terry came home late and gave me a look I'll give you this he's like candy when I said nothing she stared youve got it bad huh I've never seen you act like this he's special I admit it but I have doubts strange isn't it when I am really happy but scared as well she shook her head if he
hurts you I'll put a contract out on him I Appreciated her concern as she joked turning partially away she suddenly swung back around next time use an air freshener this place stinks I blushed no sooner had I walked in the door on Monday evening than my phone rang rang it was Jimmy he was so excited that I could hardly understand him Julia you won't believe CBS called I'm on the Letterman show tomorrow night already a longtime fan of David's he couldn't believe that he would be appearing as a Guest on his Idol show will this
Letterman appearance irritate Mrs Grom I asked Jimmy reassured me it would not be a concern with the Publishing House this is great publicity for them he said I promised I would watch and after hanging up I really felt torn I was happy for Jimmy's good fortune and glad he'd called to share it yet a voice nagged whether I liked the real Jimmy or just the man in the suit as I'd only seen him without it in bed I started to think That perhaps the costume was his crutch I tried to shove the doubts aside but
they would not go completely I generally worry about everything even good news Tuesday night Terry and I were ready for the Letterman show his first guest a young pop singer in a short skirt did her latest hit and chatted with David following commercial David introduced the man everyone in New York is talking about Superman the audience cheered as Jimmy waved and then shook hands with David and the pop star I held my breath hoping that he wouldn't make a complete embarrassment of himself but I needn't have worried despite his idolization of Letterman Jimmy was relaxed
and comfortable in conversation he told them why he had put on the suit and the bar fight with a bike rider which the studio audience enjoyed immensely he even laughed from David asking him questions with his self-deprecating humor while the audience was applauding which even Impressed Letterman himself of course the pop star could hardly resist teasing Jimmy about his Man of Steel biceps show us your super strength she insisted over his hesitation on the third request he leaned over and winked at Letterman then getting up he easily hoisted the screaming woman above his head spinning
her around Thung visible for all in attendance to see he returned her to the couch where she blurted out oh my God that was awesome and the audience went Into an outburst of laughter and Applause Letterman introduced ladies and gentlemen Superman and the Applause turned into an ovation Jimmy was seen bowing to the singer shaking the hand of Letterman and waving as he left the stage amidst thunderous Applause Terry exclaimed what a performance has he really never done any television I don't think so I said but it was unbelievable how much Jimmy had changed the
suit seemed like magic the next day I read so Many positive comments about the appearance of Jimmy on various blogs I called to congratulate him but the line was busy so I left a voicemail message sorry it took me so long Julia my phone hasn't stopped ringing he said when he called back that afternoon I just got a call from the William Morris agent gency they want to represent me they think there Show Business potential really that's amazing Jimmy I said what did you say I told them I need some time to Think I'd have
to quit my job but he said they can book many shows and engagements which can pay really well he even suggested a possible Hollywood film deal my nagging voice shouted but I didn't give into my fears oh Jimmy I'm glad for you everything is just falling your way I know he replied but I'm not going to hurry into it and then regret it later on he laughed humorlessly I have done that once with Rebecca I told him I offered my services and another Call cut him off I'll speak with you tomorrow he promised that night
I felt depressed I was happy for Jimmy's success but I had him penciled in that Superman suit for years what Future Would we have with him on the talk show circuit or Worse heading off to Hollywood I felt he cared but I was just a footnote in his story The optimistic side of my mind was telling me not to hurry while my pessimistic voice was yelling that my trouble had just arrived On my porch writing usually relaxes me but that evening I just couldn't do it Terry looking in and asking what was wrong gave ear
as I tearfully shared my fears the reality for me anyway Terry said is that the problems Rebecca she's is Achilles heel he can't take a break from the suit because she still keeps being able to hurt him should I put a contract out on her I laughed and asked her to leave my room 2 days later at work a colleague threw the comment hey Julia aren't you dating Superman when I blushed and said we'd gone out he pointed at my computer and was all check Gawker today there's an article about him on my first visit
to the gossip blog I looked for and failed to find a picture of Jimmy later I did headline the woman who broke Superman's Heart below was a picture of Rebecca Preston who was Jimmy's ex-wife caught in an angry Dash away from the camera the Jimmy sympathetic reporter wrote Everyone in New York is asking who hurts Superman so badly she followed up in a Gawker exclusive that Rebecca had been cheating on Jimmy with Connor James for months before leaving him an imperative that suggests someone had outed her I tried calling Jimmy but could not reach him
he didn't call me that night which made me apprehensive and so I didn't trouble him either I felt whatever was going on between the two of us was slipping apart the courage that was was There when he was near seene to evanes our newspaper regularly reads the competitor stories we at the Times deny that there is any competition though we are obliged to review other news media this day I was reading The Daily News which many at the Times don't consider to be a newspaper I couldn't help but notice a New York story titled Superman's
X gets axe detailing how Rebecca Preston got her walking paper from Dennison and loser while Connor James given the n too flattering description of her Paramore also left under shall we say uncertain circumstances a senior partner at Dennis and loer said their behavior harmed the reputation of the firm as if any law firm has a good name but remembering her at that cocktail party I was glad justi is served this time I was surprised to reach Jimmy as I began to report on The Daily News piece he cut me off oh yes he said Rebecca
called to tell me about it She yelled at me for having placed the story when I referred to details and facts that I had no way of knowing she still did not believe me when I denied any involvement how do you feel about it I asked him I am still digesting he said it all happen so fast and I am just unclear of what is on my mind he hesitated for a moment reflecting Julia this week's been wild I got to talk to you can you meet me Saturday afternoon out at the Central Park Zoo
I agreed set Of time and he hung up after I had hung up I was glad he wanted to share his life my doubts started to grow though and by evening I needed to discuss them with Terry she listened to my misgivings about Jimmy and then gave several more reasons for being careful I just don't want you to get hurt she said I want to know why he wants to meet me at the zoo I said what's that all about she jumped in quickly it's the kids she said that place is full of them and
I bet he wants To show off his Superman skills maybe he has media set up to film him my heart had sunk it all made sense this was his Showbiz debut I hope it would go as he wished but not good for me it wouldn't be I wanted to be his girlfriend not a prop in the Jimmy SLS Superman show I hate to admit it but I cried that night after bed the next afternoon I Almost Let It Go but Terry insisted he wants to be the one who tells you give him that courtesy to
let him tell his story this May Amaze you she was right so I curtailed my fears and went to the park I took the F train to 57th and 6th then walked around the pond into the Zoo entrance I passed by a pack of kids laughing and having fun next to the ticket booth and I expected to see Jimmy entertaining the kids but his red and blue costume was nowhere in sight I had bought a ticket and was waiting at the entrance but didn't see him so I waited in the shade I reflected on everything
While I waited I suddenly saw a man who was approaching wearing jeans and a t-shirt surprised I said Jimmy is that you I hadn't recognized him I had planned a conversation but the sight of him in civvies rendered me dumbstruck I blurted out while walking through the zoo I've never seen you without the Superman costume are you disappointed he asked his voice for some reason edgy with anxiety no it's not that I said I just expected you to be playing with the Kids and being your other self actually that's what I wanted to discuss he
said as we approached the sea lion pool we stopped to watch the playful creatures for a minute before he took me to a bench he stayed silent so long that the suspense became unbearable what's up Jimmy I asked trying to hold my anxiety back why no costume he finally looked at me and again there was apprehension in his eyes I wore the suit because of Rebecca she broke my heart by leaving me And I was feeling so humiliated it was a crazy thing to do but it gave me real confidence for the first time I
did not feel as vulnerable and I began exercising stop drinking which helped then came the publicity and it snowballed I got a promotion at work after my boss read a manuscript did Letterman and now people want me in Hollywood he took my hand but the best thing that happened was meeting you he said softly caught my breath hopes Rising but then he dashed them with his next words it's just that I have a problem and I'm afraid of disappointing you I don't understand Jimmy I wore that suit to protect myself from humiliation and it's backwards
now she's humiliated she can't hurt me and she's punished for her actions so I don't need the suit anymore I appreciated what he said but I had to bring up the consequences Jimmy without the suit you won't have those opportunities that the the agent spoke About and you'll be giving up the real chance at being famous and Wealthy maybe he said but that's not who I am or want to be that scares me he turned to me will you be disappointed if I give that up would you still like me if I'm not Superman oh
Jimmy I exclaimed just rushing into his arms kissing him and crying when I'd finally stopped he grinned at me I guess you're okay with it behind us the seals were barking and clapping it was just so funny on the way Back to the subway I expressed to him my happiness and amazement regarding the changes in him after Rebecca had left wearing the suit felt weird I said but it got you where you are today and I'm okay with that standing at my apartment Terry had her hands on her hips and a look of sternness in
her face but when she saw us all that changed and she smiled so I guess things went okay after all as opening her arms gave me a hug and then turned to Jimmy take care of Her Superman or I'll find you she smiled as she said this and Jimmy hugged her promising he would okay Terry said I need to meet friends you two look like you need privacy as she reached the door she turned back don't forget the air freshener is in the cupboard then she left leaving me blushing Jimmy embraced me she really does
care about you doesn't she he asked she's more of my guardian angel than a roommate I said she is kind of pushy but at least it is Nice to know she's got my back Terry strolled down the sunny sidewalk to a cafe where her friends were seated she waved to them as she joined the table and order a drink don't keep us in suspense one woman said did it work out yes exclaimed Terry pumping her fist I got Jimmy out of the Superman costume and they're back to the apartment if the look they gave each
other is any predictor they'll last long The Other Woman was admiring saying must admit Terry you have the touch Terry looked down fing modesty it was nothing she said at first I was not so sure about the boy when I saw him in that costume I thought he was crazy but Julia took a liking to him and later I saw that he was a good man hurt by his ex-wife even divorced her influence remained upon him to get Julia and him together I needed to break that hold how did you do it asked the second
friend well Terry continued I did get some help my sister Also worked for that same Law Firm and gave me the inside scoop I rang one of those Gawker bloggers with the juice and when the story broke it hung her out to dry gave her what was coming to her after that Jimmy was free from her spell just like I knew he would be great her friend cried you think that is good Terry said smugly wait till you hear what else I've done for Julia well said the second woman what have you done now Terry
rummaged in her big handbag and Pulled out some paper the first woman inquired what is it it's a book contract for Julia Terry exclaimed she doubted her talent and I knew otherwise I submitted her manuscript posing as her agent and now she has a contract she winked at the ladies maybe it's my wedding gift to her the second woman she raised her glass and exclaimed I nominate Terry Feldman for yenta of the year the three women laughed and tossed off their drinks Terry smiled her friends I don't know about that but I do know one
thing she said you don't need a costume or superpowers to get things done you just need a little hoods Spa
