damn yeah like OJ it was like juice was like that for you bro for he that's that throwback though the OJ running through the airp that's I us commercial sure I used to be like that on the Ravens defense Though yeah he was he was when I got there early when I got there early them boys used to battle I was like what's going on here that was a rivalry game you talk about the Championships you talk about trying to win the championship I thought in ' 08 I was going to do something until Ed
and them boys came down to my oh yeah you talked about that on inside NFL Tad pen threw four interceptions all God season you picked them off three Times yeah yeah he jumped at in route from the other side of the field cing to we was there you you ain't supposed to come over there yeah but y'all always put um what's my guy number 38 at the time uh car every time y'all put him in the game y'all gave him the ball every time he went the game he got the ball and you knew that
yeah I mean come on man every time he come in the game he got the ball dude and it was that they had Cam Cameron y every time y'all did That In-N-Out motion he mo when he motion in and go back out it was the Ernie route the cam route we call it Ernie take pining it I the here to witness it get my people feeling militant way I'm feeling get me up on the mission get me up knowing me I got the key only Vision I can trust trust Limitless TI to me c ping
it I F the here to witness it get my people feeling militant feeling get me up the mission get me up me I got Ed Reed welcome to The pivot one of the greatest of all time I we the shirt I wear the shirt for a reason that's dope you know I tell people all the time me and E was was on a a bus at a two-lane visit that both our High School coaches made us go on yeah uh we were sitting in the back and I like hey man where you going to school
and he's like I think I'm going to go to Miami yeah Y and I was like good I'm going to go to LS l so I can play I can go play yeah we Was not I was not going where he was going we knew we and Ryan knew each other from what freshman year y freshman year we um played um playoffs together man and that's when I really first knew about Ryan and um obviously we was in the same class yeah you know and yeah man we we payed out pretty damn good worked out
all right man class class of 1997 wasn't bad uh Wayne yeah yeah Robert Royal who played a ton of time In um jvis green yeah we had some guys man that that came from that class played a long time but Weezy wanted me to ask you too uh why you never paid the light bill man that is funny [ __ ] hey bro he ain't going to never let that one go he never understood why you didn't pay the light I can't remember honestly I just know when we got that and that boy hit that
switch and them lights say come on he was like re really dude come on dog I like hey we got Candles bro we good Reggie was acting like he a never have to live like that though Reggie was the he was the big brother he was the uncle you know the dad of the the bunch at the time man that's that's just how he was thinking you know like do what you're supposed to do e man we from you know we grew up 30 minutes from each other bro like we met the the tonight we
first played each other I think rondelle went for like 300 Yeah against Shaw in the playoffs rondelle melee who played the LSU uh was drafted in the sixth round but you know you were a different sort of Legend there it was track you you you pulled a high school Dion had a track meet in a baseball game the same day and did both I did when you look back at like that upbringing all the things you were doing at dest youran then did you believe you could eventually end up being who you were at the
time I wasn't thinking about That stuff um I was dreaming about it I was dreaming about the you know the Michael Jordans and the Dion and the Bo Jackson of the world Ricky Henderson and those guys coming up but it didn't really become real into college you know what I'm saying you dream about those things we emulate guys go out there on Sundays after watching football you know what I'm saying but as a kid I'm just running around playing sports man because I loved it it was Also an outlet for us being in Louisiana you
know what I'm saying so my dad kept me around the park I always say you ever you you ever hear me talk about my foundation and and myself I always say I'm a park baby I grew up at the park you know what I'm saying so we was always there we was always at the park doing something you know and I just ran track obviously you know all that stuff was it was a thing to do man as a kid and I even say that now man kids kids Job is to go to school and
play sports you know get in shape you know it teaches you so much you know and and I thank God I played multiple Sports because it it helped me with football and and a lot of stuff I did in my career man and you you a nice dude I made your number time we you know hey man appreciate it but you always on the edge of pissed off though yeah you like you it's it's like you smiling now but I can see you cussing my ass out if I ask The wrong question right now I'm
a old school like listen [ __ ] listen like you know what I'm saying but it's it's that I think it's that edge it's that it's almost they talk about that switch yeah and I seen you off the field and on the field that switch where does that switch come from because I swear to God like if you got mad right now I wouldn't be surprised man but you smiling it's that it's that old school way bro um I'm real Old school you know um them old school cats was was pretty down the Earth but
they were serious when it came down to it like that's that come from my dad man my dad the nicest cat but you piss him off it's it's pretty much over you know what I'm saying and I mean that's just how it was man that's just how that's how they that upbringing for me was like that you know so you know it's like you handle your business you go to work you do what you got to do and then you let Loose you know when I saw them pissed off they was pretty pissed off you
know what I'm saying so yeah that's where that come from that's funny [ __ ] it is man like smoke cigars to smooth that [ __ ] out yeah it's certain people that I know like like e swing on you swing on you you would though I ain't got I love my fre I love my freedom man appreciate you brother I come be Gift you know whether you smoke or not got bring it you e you um you know many would argue that you're the best safety in the history of the the NFL you know
it's either yourself or shant T obviously we know Sean's career life for that matter was cut short uh but that's that's always the argument and both of you guys uh played at the University of Miami which is a hell of coincidence the mind of Ed Reed just back there like you do Stuff that guys are not supposed to do we were just talking about belich and Brady they're both gaming game plan for you together yeah and uh you played on um one of the best defenses of all time that 2000 Ravens defense no after that
oh 200 we came out we came out 02 I'm sorry came out was after that my apologies but you played on a lot of great Ravens defense the great defense of Miami Hurricanes that Championship you think that's the when You look back at at that team and see not only how great y'all were collectively uhhuh as a team but how the individuals went on and had great careers do you think that's the greatest collection of individual players in college history we will beat any college team I I guarantee that in the history of college football
in the history of college football that 2015 2001 2002 2019 L we beating them bro we got more experience man we got Maturity here you talking about kids in a different generation mhm you know what I'm saying I look at I look at stuff after 0 not 06 but but collegewise about about 05 you know things tend to change you know the rules got different in everything game hold you know the game was different but yeah man we beating anybody we we had more maturity and and like you said Sean T was the backup yeah
right the boys special teams right and They was dogs when when they went in there we were still not allowing a lot of points when they went in there and look what they did the year after you know one of the other teams was the year before but we lost to Washington on some coaching stuff so back to my original question bit long-winded um you really the quarterback of the defense you know how they say he's the quarterback of the defense like that was your mindset but trying to get into the mind of Ed read
Uh what was like was it just um in was it film study how much do you contribute to just just a skill just a I don't even [ __ ] know how to explain it you know what I'm saying like you had it I know what you saying you know what I'm saying you just had it you don't get 64 of them things if you ain't got it yeah that's what I'm saying but how much film study also contributed to a lot of film study a lot of film study you know coming to Baltimore we
didn't have a lot of pieces Like y'all had they were our rivalry you know y'all were too early in the game and obviously Us in Miami battle constantly you know but y'all had a lot of pieces we didn't have those pieces and I truly did look up to Michael Jordan guys like that he did more he did extraordinary things you know what I'm saying so I wanted I I had already did a lot of that growing up playing street Football and the answer your qu the answer to your question is repetition okay you can't coach
reps right you got to get reps in I had a lot of reps in Louisiana man a lot of reps bro playing street football playing freaking flag football tackle just that's what we did that's all we had you know what I'm saying so I count a lot of that to repetition but once I got to the league it it was damn show film study I constantly film study you see clips of Me doing the Ravens wire I had to hold DBS if not damn the defense at my house like come watch film bro I was
I was not selfish when it came to winning and treating my teammates or giving to my teammates I would man buy plenty food give them supplements whatever I had to do you know what I'm saying because I just felt we didn't have we was in deep like that when it came to every position like I can think think of teams they had like damn they stacked right you know What I'm saying [ __ ] the old 16am we played you know I think that 06 08 08 yeah it was 0808 played in the AFC Championship
and ab um first year if I'm not mistake that was 10 yeah that was 10 I'm like late look at that like they boys a stack you know so I was like and we a had no offense soone like man I have to be that guy doing a little bit more so I was like you know make them sacrif ices man you know and I go out you know study I used to leave work an Hour and a half later I'm watching tape at home you know smoking a cigar drinking on something you know just
sitting there watching it man you know was like become a coach when you walked into the stadium for for those games I'm going say on our side we weren't playing y offense I didn't care about Joe flacko I didn't care who was on the other side playing offensively you know me and Troy knew say man Ed's going to do something that at some point we got to make a play To match it we knew Ray was going to do something T sugs was going to get to the quarterback so that mean James had to do
like you understood that going into the games when you look back at the Rivalry of Pittsburgh and Baltimore during our times what are some of the thoughts that stick out to you can I light the cigar I you say Roby first off bro like I don't think you get the credit that you deserve appreciate it man as a safety as a Athlete I know you right but I also know what you put into the game my mental was strong but yours is just as stronger like you knew the game in and out there's a reason
why you sitting in that chair today bro so I commend you bro means a lot to me yeah you're not getting a pub that you deserve man I I know you deserve it dude future Hall of Famer but yeah it was just that who defense going to be the best yeah today yeah even with y'all it's like who's Going to be the best defense today what different with Y y'all you know you had you you know like you got to stop Fred T it oh man you had to stop Fred T like you got to
deal with Fred T but yeah bro it was it was who's going to be the better defense today you know that's how you win this game and I mean that's what it was you know we even in AFC champ game I think about it's like we gave up that play mhm you know it was back and forth but we gave up the play you know So that that was definitely the mentality bro without a doubt like you knew y'all was going to do something you know and and we got to be the big brother we
was the big brothers of the team right you know it's like who's going to show up today man it was going to be tough in hind feel always oh my god dude terrible yeah we when you think about you know things that I remember from Ed Reed I like to go through the moments your speech has made it to Tik Tok right don't ask me if I'm hurt yeah I'm hurt can you take me through what led to that though eie were you not supposed to play or no I was hurt but that was that
was 2001 my senior year I got to take you all the way back to 1997 my freshman year for that Curtis Johnson recruit you yep Y and I red shirted and um we playing in Florida State and I didn't dress I'm on the sideline and they kicking the Eye it's like 47 nothing was the game Samari was on the team yeah don't n them came out on one series we driving down the field the they took the first team out you go watch the game they took the first team out we got to like the
35 offensively they put their ones back in and kicked us out of field goal range like they wanted to shut us out and I'm on the sideline watching all this like man I ain't coming for that like you Know I've already Embrace myself in orange and green and like I'm orange and green all through and through um I actually grew up rooting for the other team though but I'm here like it's over I'm with Miami but damn I ain't come here for that so I remember that you know how you you turn back and you
look at them games you lost you be like remember this moment you know that's what it was it was that moment so I'm yelling at them Bo we winning for one But I went in the locker room early cuz I had spraying my AC joint or something like that sternum bruised I go there I'm getting chaining everybody walking in as you can see the clip the beginning I'm taking my stuff off yeah everybody's like man you all right you're all right you good you all right you all right I never said nothing just like to
the end of it like stop asking me if I'm hurt dude I want to win this game basically like it's like dude we winning Though we winning the games like I ain't want them to score bro like I wanted to set them out you know and they just couldn't feel my pain they they wasn't there they remember 97 you know what I'm saying so it's all good and BR that youth thing I'm down in Miami now I do media and all that stuff that whole is a youth thing you won't understand what the hell does
that mean cuz it bro y'all is just a football organization to me but everybody that played for Miami you For Miami like y'all look at it differently yeah I I mean I think differently man like you know I feel like Miami is the closest thing to HBCU and the division ones you know and and and to for Simplicity I can just say convicts versus Catholics all right but that youth thing actually it came after like the you thing we Miami Hurricanes when I was there the whole you thing is different you know but it's because
of how we trained how we worked you know a Bunch of guys that was in the league that been down there come work out with us it's like nah man y'all can have this [ __ ] you know like we ain't training like this I'm in the league like I don't have to do it like this no more you know we didn't stop my first five six years in the league I set even more Foundation by going back and working out with Coach s yeah s yeah you know know like for real like suy and
Coach mafit when they came to Miami they changed us they they They they they changed a bunch of us who who was who were kind of I guess you could say lukewarm you know on the bubble sort to say you know who wasn't training wasn't working out like we coming in here and the ones that don't want to be here not going to be here and the ones that were working Y'all Gonna Get boost more you know and and the damn sure was that man so that's what it was like we have we have a
true high standard man like we did anyway you know It kind of fell off a bit but that's also go with leadership you know Ryan mentioned CJ Curtis Johnson that's it's my guy Andrew swayy Tommy Ma Bush Davis you know people like that Chuck Pagano like I had them in high school y'all met them when they were head coaches you know I mean had him in college you know so we had the leadership leadership matters man like I've I've I've I've seen a lot of coaches I've been on every level I've coached pretty much on
every Level leadership matters man you know if y'all had a bad boss this wouldn't be as smooth yeah you know what I'm saying so leadership mattered for us bro hey why you say that what did you see her over there after you say that hey look she talking about when you said it if y'all had a bad ball she G to hit us with the yeah you're welcome and I know they appreciate it cuz I mean this this is it like everybody wants to be right here she keep us lined up and like structure But
this is our HR department you you you enjoying yourself I'm cooling okay just let me know if anything go I will hey you played against uh you faced a lot of legendary quarterbacks and just the name of two of them Tom and Payton obviously yeah so those guys were just amazing they played in a different era could you play in this era yeah what would you do in this era pick off more balls mhm they throwing More they throwing they throwing a lot more which is exciting for me MH I was a ball guy like
I hit you but we know getting that ball they got the ball is where it's at right turnovers you know what I'm saying so hell yeah I would love to play in this league right now how frustrating is it to to to watch the game today or is it frustrating or is just you just enjoy it overall it's a little bit with the rules but you know I knew the rules we when we was in the League man every year we had those referee meetings I couldn't believe it I was like every year ain't no
way dude they implemented a rule every year so like I tell people I saw it coming like it was already doing it and one thing I know about life and then football like you got to be able to adjust right you know what I'm saying like we we them type of people you know you got to be able to adjust so yeah man bring on this this league right now it' be love you Know we was on the tail end of it anyway you know we were the first ones to get suspended and fin for
the helmet to helmet you know so and I argued it man it's a bang bang play you know I'm like it's how you take football out of football and all that stuff so you just got to adjust even with that I guess to to go further it takes some sort of a certain type of aggression to go and make those plays but then you sort of there's a a fine line where you're Aggressive and trying to make that play and then boom you know one of those penalties kind of take over yeah then frustration sets
and so I guess the question I was asking from that point of view and if you could play in well I know you could play in today's game but would it be as special yeah man I honestly think it'd be more plays honestly cuz if if the work ethic stays the same I think it's the same and I don't believe The work ethic would change I don't see cats working at hard I don't see cat separating himself and doing the things that I saw us doing on the field you know what I'm saying I I
don't see the physicality that y'all had at that position and I know it's been kind of watered down but you're a dog you're a dog yeah like you figure it out you know so I think it's been watered down a good bit and it has cats thinking overthinking that's one thing I Never did to this game and the never will do it's football right I'm not overthinking football yeah now I would adjust to the rules that they have and which I did that every year I had to as a DB can't touch guys after five
this that or whatever we knew they were making rules to make it easier for yall yeah there's the business model I like to say this was the business that's you got SC More scoring more TV timeout bigger TV deals bigger Sponsorship bigger opportun that's what fans exactly that's what it's all about once you know that okay it's all good then right yeah I'm I'm sit one thing I know and I I believe y'all knew the same thing in in Pittsburgh defense can't complain n we got to go back regardless y man bring it on man
all the football bring all the football on even even the games you hated with the 100 plays against pton like dude pton going to try to run As many plays against you as possible believe him and Bren would do that man I was like [ __ ] who's who's the best of the two I always say 1 a1b you you pick it how you want it one a1b bro and you can't rule out the guy that was in Pittsburgh they saw us a lot like that was a different thing you know you talk about those
rules most of them was made with videos from our games like like honestly like you be sitting in the room and they be like you can't do this This year and it'll be Ed or Ray or it'll be Debo James Harrison like yeah well they might just bring these teams and show the video at one time you know like that's what it that's what it turned into I want to kind of pivot you know pun intended actually and U you know just kind of talk about some of the human aspects of Ed Reed because we've
talked about the football um I actually know that as great as you were at destan it wasn't like you were Recruited by everybody right right you had to go to Miami you proved yourself become one of the best in the country should have won the Thorp award in in my opinion had two years where it's very possible for you to win it you know you didn't first round pick all these things are great right we watch you play but you also in I think it was in 2011 found out your brother had disappeared yeah you
know and you know headed into Kansas City there was no Resolution there wasn't any news to sort of calm you and you had to go out and play Team eventually gives you to the game ball after that but I don't want to talk about the game I want to talk about the feeling of finding out that your loved one can't be found that was that was tough um thank God for parents cuz it was more on them right I was thinking about cuz they lost they lost a Son MH like I'm losing a brother and
it hurt and it hurt but I was like you got to be strong for your parents I call home and my dad picked up my dad was like what can you do you can't do nothing like you come home and what you know life goes on sort to say it's like play your game when you finish come home wow that's what your brother would want anyway play your game Come home then we go from there cuz you can't do anything it's like all right Dad hit me with that so I regroup we flew out that
was that Saturday like we flew to Kansas City right [ __ ] about an hour after Steve was like and that's one thing I love about the team at the time man we was such a Brotherhood but Steve was like you know whatever you need pretty much you know it's like I'mma play in the game he was like after the game send You home on the plane whatever all right no question and that was it man like so my focus was you know play this play this game man like you know it's the game that
I've been playing my brother played it he would want me to play it you know and I kind of left it at that you know it was some emotional emotions there kind of built up you know cuz I didn't know a lot like there was so many unknowns about it that that really had My had my head scrambling but football is a hell of a medication you know that helps us get through some things cuz you can be going through so much at some times that people will never know you still out there playing a
game yeah you know what I'm saying I can think about so many other things that I went through that folk didn't know you know and I'm sure y'all had the same when y'all was out there but you had to go regardless like defense yeah you know because it's Your job and you take care of everybody for the most part you know and that's why I was at in my family like this is how I make my livelihood quite frankly this is what's going to pay for the funeral so you know let me go get this
playoff check at night hour was home when you do get home and all of that is behind you you know the the medication is gone the honestly the distraction yeah that's what it was the distraction is gone how Do you move forward from something like that from the the questions of why did it happen I anybody knows anything about the crib like that River like people don't play around with you you know you you have to make a decision to do that how many what ifs what could I have done yeah what was going on
with be how could I have stopped how many times did you ask yourself those questions or did you say you know what this is what we have to do yeah a lot man you know of course You you you you go through all those emotions you know what could I have done this that or whatever my brother was you know he was older so he's going to make his decisions you know as a grown person anyway but it was what what do God have for me right now you know like what is the lesson through
this cuz I can't bring him back once I on my biggest thing was honestly we had to get him out the river that was the biggest challenge bro it's like like you said that River Don't play you know about that Mississippi is through through this country but I want my parents to bury their child like it became that quickly when I got home because he was not out of there yet so once we got him out of there and I was able to put my hands on him man and see him you know it's like
that was more relieved than anything and cuz I knew my parents they knew what they knew what happened so to say MH and once they were good man I was kind of You know I was kind of all right you know but it was really like what am I to learn through this and it really didn't hit me to years later when I had to help not had to help but it just came up Tori Tory Smith lost his brother while we were playing Tory Smith brother had passed away and I found myself coming into
the hotel in the hallway and I see him crying like people tell telling me what happened Like that's why you go through what you go through in life so you can help somebody else along the way when they go you know when they go through theirs you know cuz I didn't you know that was going to happen years later you know so that's that's what it that's what it come to man it's like that's going to be a lesson in this it's going to be a teaching lesson it's going to be a help lesson for
somebody you know and at the time I didn't know that M you know and I Was not ever questioning God just wondering why like how so young but I also knew the streets I also know reality if you surround yourself with certain things if you do certain things you know you bound to put yourself in a bad position eie one thing like just listening to you talk like I call it a lion like you control your territory when you walk around you control what's around you but like those situations like you're i w say helpless
but you Have no control of it no like everything you do is you you you strategically have control of that thing yeah was that the worst time for you to not have control of your brother like just not having control over a situation man that was one of them for sure I thought I lost my mind one time I thought I lost my mind thought I was going crazy one time in Baltimore and it was more or less a midlife crisis type Of thing spiritually deep too cuz I was changing I was doing things different
you know seeking God a lot more you know and and I was open spiritually you open spiritually you open yourself up for things entering and going you know so to say so I was saying in my mind but talking to folk and like seemed like they didn't just couldn't get it I'm like this is crazy man is me what what what what happened what Catalyst what happened oh no I probably smoking at Oo we at the another thing we were just talking about it people will call that [ __ ] CTE yeah they they will
definitely try to throw that on we ain't bad that's what um we Reggie did say that's probably why you didn't pay the bill that boy was probably on that oh man i' look man i' I've been around for a long time I grew up in a um badly structured and minimal Resources environment mhm you know um I had beer and that stuff early in life you know what I'm saying I was my parents were at work so we were outside and when that's when we were really outside and you had to mature a lot older
like a lot sooner should I say you know New Orleans like bro no New Orleans and y'all seen some clips you know kids are outside early m you know I grew up five minutes out of New Orleans before I moved to dester hand you know and um not Many have made it out of Shrewsberry manberry you know what I'm saying like not many make it out of there you know it's still crime infested drug infested man I hate to say it but it is like it's almost like forgotten you know but that probably the worst
thing growing up through those times man but yeah I was you you know I I I damn show smoke when I was in the league I never did it for practice or games none of that stuff don't condone to do it you know during That times you know to each his own what you do right you know what I'm saying cuz I've been knowing that this time will come that we in now with a Leen it on it and allowing it and now cats don't know how to handle themselves you know what I'm saying cuz
I was coaching in I'm like y'all tripping like this ain't it man like just because you can don't mean you should there's levels to this [ __ ] right you know what I'm saying like I was grown at the time and able to Handle myself so and I had made it quite frankly so I was like I got this [ __ ] boy goddamn e read he read brought something different out we a never had this a delivery and this you been out your best behavior I was good today y 14 hours thank you hey
I should have been asleep 10 hours ago hey cheers bro cheers bro no doubt man big to y'all man in the show bro this is what it do got Legends on today we can finally get this thing done we got Legends on like that's a sophisticated cigar smoker you can let it grow without it breaking over I guess well it tells you a lot about the construction of it and since just chilling I can I can hold it break it down in a minute I ain't going to lie Freddy T Shan these holidays hit me
but I've been holling at our partners over at DraftKings also an official betting partner of the NFL any new customer that signs up right now using the promo code pivot you place a $5 bet you get $150 in bonus bets and I've been sliding y'all these same game parlays all year now I'm telling y'all see what these defense are doing out here nowadays man I'm going under I'm going a team that wins same game parlay get a chance of winning even more money and with the no sweat bets you get a bonus bet if your
bet don't hit come on draft Hey listen the only way you can win you got to download the app and if DraftKings Sportsbook isn't in your area Don't worry about it download DraftKings daily fantasy you still can get in the game you heard Freddy T man that is what you need to do and any new customer that signs up right now use the promo code pivot place a $5 bet you get $150 in bonus bets back to the show you said something that stood out you said a badly structured minimal resources environment and then you
said it's leveled to this and for long as I've known you been a leader and uh Really you you you you took a leap of faith in 2022 when you tried to go down the Bon and helped change the face of you know that program you know um I'm sure you got some inspiration from Dion and what he was able to do over at Jackson State and uh you put your all into it it didn't work out yeah Why didn't it work out it was purpose filled so it did work out okay but it didn't
work out because honestly I think me as a Professional did a little bit too much social media went off on the people whatever whatever right that was probably one of the biggest things that's some stuff people didn't see that probably really took it over the hump cuz I was good after the ranch they could have got rid of me right then and there if they wanted to but they didn't it was other things that transpired that folk didn't know okay You know we were about to build a practice field on campus the inner miral field
we wanted to take that field in which we met at 12:00 I still got the notes emails videos of people everything out on the field we going to change this field we going to change the fencing around here I mean you can literally drive through the fence on a go-kart MH that's a half one lane of a track it's not a full track they don't even have a Curve MH we've ought to change all this no money from me nor the school I got folk who meeting on the property who looking through BCU stuff that
don't look like us that's a threat right y why you showing these folk our stuff cuz I'm asking those questions why is it like this like are you getting money just to have abandoned buildings right are you getting paid is the school getting paid to have abandoned buildings cuz that's what this look like to me I couldn't watch young men and young women go through that I couldn't watch young women ice tub knowing that they got homeless folk who have mental issues that can walk up on them right with no fencing nothing they can walk
on them walk up on them I know it was an issue when I got to bring my weapon with me to work wow they had three people show up in my office come to the head coach office excuse me I want to give you my resume I'm looking at him like how you got in here oh somebody let me in who here take my I don't want your resume who are you man you you know what I'm saying like it was that those things going on even to this day I would go back and do
it I'm not I was not deterred about what I saw I was pissed off about it and we were going to do something about it but I wasn't mad like I wasn't deterred like we not going to do this no you Could ask those kids I still talked to some of them it didn't work because I got kids over there that went to BCU because of me I let them down yep that's personal to me that's what hurt me more that's what my tears were for like damn I got these kids there that came to
BCU because of me and I let them down the kids that was on the recruiting trip that came to BCU that I had 30 recruits bro the most BCU ever had and I probably was gonna get every Last one of those kids to change that program kids who didn't go to their other visits because they we going to BCU because coach re believe in you first of all it's extremely mature and aware to say I probably did too much yeah there there were certain things things in that looking back that could have been done differently
differently do you have any regrets about how that process went especially when you think of some of those kids who decided to go To the school because of Coach Reed live with no regrets man like I wouldn't take back because I knew I wasn't wrong those kids that that school protested them young women and young men went out there and protested bro and all I could do is sit at the car wash I can hear cuz I was around the corner from it and all I could think about is where are the parents that made
me even more mad like y'all kids out here protesting where your parents at ain't no way my kid go Protesting and I'm not with him cuz they just going to continue to do the same thing to your kids man but e you talk about recruiting well you decided to go there like so you went obviously you went there in advance and that was my thing like the social media stuff like you seem so surprised but you had to have seen that before you took that job they only going to show you so much right when
I got recruited to go to Houston they flew me down on a private Plane I flew back on freaking Southwest of Del you know I know they a had nothing to do with that but yeah but you understand like when I went down there and sat down with the ad and met the ad he took me to everywhere he can possibly take me to is is what he's saying I got coaches here I can't take you in the facility when I did show up and they knew I were coming cuz you got to go back
and watch you go watch that Thread all them interviews they lying through the whole time they saying we a know Ed was coming how you didn't know I was coming you got my name on the parking space you gave me the keys how you not know I'm supposed to be here what are you talking about yeah he showed me the stadium that Stadium locker room we going to change that Ed I'm like yeah guarantee you got to change that right now man like oh this the practice field too so y'all busting To the practice field
it's costing what two to three grand every day you busting now we going to change that I don't even want to go over there I'm talking to him like like I'm not even going over there until we get us a practice field like so just get ready for it like I'm saying stuff like that so I know they like what is Hell going on like it was about to be unconventional as [ __ ] yeah because we need needed resources and I knew they were coming they had already came man Like man they had already
came we had already had the resources you know I'm talking to a billionaire getting out the car with this billionaire telling me let me know what I need get out the car with him I'm talking to a guy who's a millionaire now who's saying whatever you need I got you that man cut that grass got people to come in pull out the weeds and the Gazoo off the buildings and stuff like that he got the ball rolling for was and when I told him to Be mindful of the people in the school he was like
I want hit I was like I got to tell you because you can't just come throwing money around here dude and you not giving it to nobody these folk this ain't how this thing go man you got to wait till we get a football account to where you could do stuff like that for us in we dbit though like I never I never had any intentions not to give to the yeah I I did I was doing my research on Miss Mary mlau like I that blew me away about knowing her you know and what
she did and what she went through I'm from this you know it we're from Shrewsberry man like I'm from this here I I grew up in this let's go I grew around ratch and roaches dude you know so let's go yeah this is easy for me I'm just trying to establish Pride that's what it was like yeah I came back to establish Pride now every night is like they a trash of rain like rain trash every night I'm like Dude this is crazy I go and everybody tell you every day I got to work I
go outside and clean up in front of the building what you say rain trash bro first of all is built on Old Landfield so every night it seemed like trash really it fell out the sky bro I would go bro my coaches was getting mad at me like Ed stop picking up stuff I'm like bro I have to like they need some pride around here right yeah it's no Pride we got to get Pride back in Daytona there's no Pride yeah you know in the midst of that I'm trying to get cash to go to
class I'm checking classes I'm buying food I got a guy I'm walking out of um The Wing Spot random U white guy come out excuse me who are you like coach batun like he's like no but you're the head coach right like yeah he like what are you doing like I'm bringing food to the team he's like G do this assistance it's like we got to do what we got to do Right now man that's the part that goes unnoticed you know that that's not floating all over social media but the one thing that did
was you know I mentioned Prime Dion yeah how vocal he was in showing support you know in your your progression and and trying to make things work there but you guys were teammates in Baltimore yeah you know what what what a lot of your conversation what did he tell or what would be conversation with Dion and and Young Ed Reed because he was there in 2004 you drafted in 02 right what what were those conversations like and how has he been a a big brother a mentor a father figure like how has he really helped
you in life man I knew prime before he got to Baltimore I worked Prime camps Prime used to do camps in Puerto Rico football camps and stuff so I used to go work his camps I used to go to his house work his camps and stuff in in Dallas so he been doing this you know and we already had had a relationship when he got to Baltimore I was like really coming that that guy one of the guys on the team even more so and he was like that was yeah I one um defensive player
the year one defensive player the year actually and when Prime was like dude you that dude I was like wow I appreciate that it's yeah it's it's pretty much done now keep doing what you're doing and that's What he told me man keep doing what you're doing I never stopped like that was the ultimate coming from him cuz I looked up to him yeah like dude Prime in Prime in the locker room and you just in there sitting and he's got his uniform on you just still over there like damn it's just number 37 now
you know you know but he had the same mentality man and that's what that's what I held on to like the mentality didn't change you know even though he was in his lot of Years like and I took note of that like the body is going to change yeah you know so it just taking notes man so many so much I learned from him so much I took from him and when I got the BCU I was I was talking to him then right I talked to him before that because he he's like I want
you to go to Jackson State I want to give this to nobody else okay he called me the day after BCU called though he's like I want to give this to You man I can't think of nobody else who love them kids like this right I said BCU called me yesterday let me see how this going to pan out and I get back to you long story short the ad call and I wind up sitting down with Ashley and I War it man I swear I was like I got to go visit there too so
I went visit BCU and I'm leaning to BCU because if it's about the culture our culture why I help the other one get up yeah right that's why I chose BCU over Jackson State man I mean I got family in mome Jackson State was IDE deal like I'm from Mississippi I used to run through those dirt roads like that was our deal two hours from my family in Louisiana it's our deal right but if it's about the culture BCU is the place to be plus they call First you know as them let they bells and
whistles was there man I just like let's build up another brother or sister right HBCU if that's what it's truly About right you know and I had no intentions of going nowhere else at the time cuz I'm like I'm still in Florida man I can retire here you know you've accomplished uh so much um and those things are commemorated in you know Miami Hall of Fame Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame obviously 2019 NFL Pro Football Hall of Fame but with all of your individual accomplishments I knew how much you wanted to win a championship yeah
it Just so happened you got to win that championship in New Orleans man you you get there you you make a call you say hey look I want to give my team a little taste of of what it is yeah what sort of moment was that like bro you got to have the Crawfish ball yeah do everything for your team in New Orleans and then you go beat the San Francisco 49 that was a dream coming true still is surreal bro like I think I've been on that Super Bowl Hangover since then I ain't really
had a steady job man like just been kicking it but that was the best bro and the winning was like we wasn't going to lose that game it wasn't happening like I gave them boys a speech before we went to New Orleans about the food they was like re really I'm like bro I got y'all but come Tuesday eat what you've been eating don't don't eat our food you know but I got you Monday Tuesday I had a party for Him I had my uncle do some turkey necks um jacobe did stuff about his mom
house with crawfish and everything like we did all that early and and then it was enjoy enjoy like a regular week man please you know I was just so geeked up bro I ate dragos every day right there two three dozen every day like I'm I'mma Be built up I'mma hurt somebody hurt myself straight up I ain't want no friend to come over nothing I'm just in there like geeked Up dog I swear to y'all do I'm so geeked up bro I hurt myself in the first quarter I heard both of my hmcls I I
had a second degree on this one and the first degree on this one bro and yeah I was coming off the field when when those light went off bro what are you thinking like Y in control lights go out stay focused stay focused and then once they start we started playing again they start coming back I'm like God damn just don't let them score more than Us like it's like you know cuz man we 78 bro you cool us off it's going to take a minute for us to get back warmed up right so I'm
like I'm like damn can't really move my legs hurt just don't let them score more I don't care if we win by one point bro at that point I didn't care how we won the game just so you go back to the clipse I'm like just don't let them score more than us you know we leading don't let Them score more than us that's all we could do I gotta ask cuz you talking about um like you ain't had no steady job and all that bro the Bon cook man everything that you do like you
pop up why bro it's not about the money I don't like to count another man's Pockets but it's not about the money yeah like what is it about why the hell do you why the hell do you want to coach why the hell are you doing anything up why don't you go fishing [ __ ] like just chill I mean I'm still young like I grew up in an era where you know our people didn't stop like older people always did something they stad moving like my mom don't sit down like she cleaning constantly I'm
like Mama chill out like I got this nah so they was always doing something bro there going to come a time when we can't do it it's like when we was in the league like you know there's coming a time when you're not going to be able to Do this no more you got to have an Exit Plan you know and I have a Exit Plan got a time when I don't want to do anything you know and that's that's creeping up on me you know 20 years or whatnot you know so they got some
things you want to accomplish personally but I've been doing it since I've been in the league I had my Foundation which I had my Camp I've been doing that destan for over 20 years years and I'm out there I missed one day of that camp 20 years you know So I'm out there plus I've been around good coaching I've been around bad coaching you know my son played I9 flag football and I'm watching dude coach him like he's like a drunk dude like I don't want this I don't want this guy leading my child yeah
so I'm like either I'm going do something about it or I got got to sit here and take this [ __ ] no I'm going coach yeah I'm going I was already a coach you know on the field I was known As a coach you know so that stuff was already been natural like it was natural I was Monday I'm sitting in a coaches meeting just on the floor listening to them you know and them asking me questions you know Tuesday I'm in there getting the game plan Wednesday morning we meeting with the coach to
go over what we wanted what we didn't want in you know it's like I'm like walking there like okay why y'all got cover three up there dude pyton just killed Him on put cover three we running cover two the whole game like don't show him no three you know what I'm saying like so it's in me to do it you know what I'm saying and like I said I've been around a lot of coaches man I've been around a lot of coaches good bad and different it matters who your boss is talking about that with
you y yeah yeah yep I was there as the chief of staff and like I'm watching stuff like this ain't this ain't it like they Still kids yeah yeah you know times to change kids to change but parenting hasn't still got to parent them like they're still your kids but do you rub people the wrong way oh yeah no doubt about it no doubt about it bro it's so hard for me not to speak the truth Fring when you're dealing with this like it's a game it's truly a game you know what I'm saying just
when you get to our level you getting paid for it but that's still it's not complicated this is not This is not rocket science man it's football yeah you know what I'm saying and a lot of people doing it off of Madden or whatever man I don't know but they got a lot of coaches that just can't relate to a lot of us that doing it for one it's a lot of us that play football and a lot of people that's in the leadership spots don't look like us you know and that's the system that's
just how the system is it's all over and it's It's throwing through every occupation you know not everybody in those spots deserve to be in those spots I'm just asking for equal spot to show you you know that's that's it man really you know it just so happened that all of our schools HBCU are calling more than anybody else like that I was good though I was at Miami man I was three years at Miami Chris coach Crystal bar just got there like could have stayed and worked it out and figured that out you know
They didn't want me to leave but I'm like gotta go do this man I want to do this this is just random way off it way over there September 11 2001 leading up to the hurricanes National Championship game all of us can remember what we were doing September 11th 2001 911 attacks wow what were you doing walking in the locker room um that was my that's my birthday right so you you somebody just somebody no man we had practice we had Practice and I think it's like a Wednesday or Thursday that happened somebody just gave
me a bottle of wine happy birthday and I'm walking in the training room walking in the locker room and as soon as as I walk in the locker room all the teammates are there looking at the TV and as I turn around that's the second plane hit the building as I turn around and I you know I look back at everybody else and you know we guys shaking their head and stuff like you Know coaches like no practice because oh man who who mom one of the guys' mom worked at the Trade Center wow at
the time so we wouldn't practicing until he heard from her right and thank God she was late his mom was late bro wow yeah so yeah I remember like it was yesterday man it's my birthday walking in the locker room you know happy birthday like what D no way you know and yep since then 911 a I was going to ask you how do You celebrate bro I it's when you go around that sun again man you know it's it's it's a reflecting time you know what I'm saying thank God you know for for being
here like coming from where we from man we didn't made we we didn't we didn't broke some barriers that folk don't know you know cats didn't make it 14 15 years old you know so I'm I'm grateful man yeah I got it bro you can do the Just For Men like you can you can get Again you look young but it's almost like you but I was going to ask that like it's almost like you Embrace that [ __ ] likeo die in that [ __ ] bro get black again I would do it if
they pay me to do it other than that I'm rocking out but does the hell mean something cuz like you see like like you talking about HBCU and all does the hell mean something yeah man of course of course the hell means something come on let's go back to biblical terms but I always Had a fro when I was a kid MH you know and um football like I always had hair on my head you know I got old pictures of me to fro you know and that's probably from the old school way man the
boys back in the day the suit and ties the fro picked out and everything you know I actually been combing it lately so you know yeah man yeah yeah it's the it's the it's from now I'm SP real old school B the 1997 all Metro team in the times PE P times pyun was the name of our paper right some old stuff right somebody somebody sent me a picture of it we're right on like our pictures are like this on the thing on the um in the paper all Metro team we both were safeties at
the time and so I've always taken a a pride in what you do there was I think my last year in Pittsburgh uh his cousin's married to my cousin and they came to the game and I went into the locker room to get Him yeah I was like you know e Johnny was outside and Pittsburgh went crazy cuz we lost that night and they were like oh you lost the game like you being friends I was like we've been Brothers though I was like that don't have nothing to do with football right you know and
so when you get to the to the Hall of Fame it was one of those proud moments for me because I was like I saw that yeah in 95 96 97 it was a forego Conclusion that you'd be elected we I think everybody felt like you be a first ballot Hall of Famer even in knowing that how special was that moment when you get the call or you get the knock that Ed Reed is not a Hall of Famer man I was I'm still not a big Accolade guy really that stuff you know it it
it it blew me don't get me wrong it was big but you know I don't know if you heard but I was like trying to get my spot up to Steve Atwater at The time I didn't know that man hold up I grew up watching Steve Atwater and he's on the list but he's not in there you know and I'm like this is crazy like man I'll give my spot up for Steve send me in next year like you know he was one of the pavers that I truly watched you know and that's that's that's
probably a little you know not understanding the process of voting and all that like man really Steve Atwater not in he went in the year later you Know I was like come on man but I don't know bro I'm just I'm just a realist when it come to stuff man like that that stuff is big in the you know the individual scheme of things but it was it's a team sport hey do you realize how strange of a human you are what is that that there are people who are are literally Drew Pearson he's waited
his entire life as a retired football player to be a hall of Famer like there are people who literally man can't even Finish the first 20 seconds of their speech yeah that cry Fred I'm on stand by stand by like service hey I'm trying to call out we got service and they told you and you said n let me uh let me get my spot to Ste that's that's amazing bro that is yeah man I I always knew you were a strange cat but just loved it about you that's yeah man I can wait you
know it's all good like I get in there something You know you going to celebrate with your family you know it's it's huge and and you you want to get those guys in there while they here too man like I was talking to um who was that Ricky Jackson Ricky Jackson yeah pass swilling went in but he wasn't there bro to enjoy it yeah Rick Jackson was pissed bro he was pissed bro like he in there now but can't enjoy it family can't like he Was pissed I'm just in there like damn this what I
was talking about you know what I'm saying like they need to figure out a way something different but you know I was just it is what it is man like it's Super Bowl is it for me like team team goals was it I had a bunch of individual goals my last year lead the league all that all that I ain't get none of that [ __ ] we won the Super Bowl I ain't care like I ain't care like it's the ultimate team sport you know what I'm saying don't get me wrong from a family
perspective you know you you want to be you want to be honored for your work you put in right you know what I'm saying as you should you will be Fred T man but I had roommate like re you be like I'm a Hall of Fame Dad yeah like that's more what it's about and it's truly the sport of Kings man I look my favorite movie is wild cats right with Goldie that's my favorite football movie And but the song This the sport of Kings better than diamond rings I remember football football W you know
what I'm saying like but that's the stuff I see like in these young kids who play in high school and college like they don't grasp that yeah they don't grasp that you know it's not an individual sport right it's a team sport and you got to want to you can't try you either do or you don't you know what I'm saying ain't no trying cuz this a physical game yeah It's most physical game out man it's a violent physical game you could die playing this game got to be special a little slightly thinking about something
different different saying you know so it was never about that for me man cuz I played this game on the street literally next to the Sweet Shop like running into cars and mailbox I ran into a mailbox ran into a mailboxing shoes B bro put me in the hospital playing on The street you know what I'm saying and once I made it to the league I didn't give a [ __ ] like I'm just want to play as long as I possibly can and I'm G let my presence be felt you know and I'mma do
everything I need to do to help my team win hopefully we can you know but I also know everybody don't get there every point when it hit us like man we a't it's over yeah yeah I was like [ __ ] we lost twice against them once against the coast against the Patriots I'm like man I sung Teddy Pendergrass after that four one after that fourth AFC Championship game B in the locker was singing Love TKO I think I better let it go inter do I man hey speaking to Teddy penr real quick because I
know we got to rap catch a couple flights uh during the pandemic you started showing your DJ skills on uh Instagram live yeah you've been DJing ever since man and uh we we got to get a show say no more man I be in the Background for y'all man playing the music and [ __ ] yeah that'll be dope hey be dope last statement do you do you still keep up with the Ravens do you still yeah do you still watch them when you look at yeah I watch Red Zone yeah you know what's the
cuz you didn't have congrats on inside the NFL by thank you brother thank you brother you I was on that show for a minute so like see my brothers doing that yeah like you didn't have offense they got Lamar Jackson now Oh man when when when you sit back how fun is it to watch this Ravens team with that dude at come on bro it's like it's like when Vic was when when we played against Vic when Vic was there for us it reminds me of that you can hear the excitement people talking about it
you watching the play like God Lamar did yeah Special bro yeah it's special from a raven's perspective I always you know I'm like you like I'm critical you Know of of how we were and the in the building but I'm also like a coaching like trying to help you know I try not to be as critical but I try to help from the background you know but it's special watching them man with uh you know ran now and the defense finally starting to that defense is not what your defense was yeah but finally starting to
play play good football do you think uh it's it's time or they got opportunity to get number three for the organization the Ravens got a chance to win the third yeah I mean since Lamar been there I've been excited about number three coming um but I also know it takes the whole kid Kabuto I mean even the city right people don't understand what it takes to win a championship like it take everything even the city that's why I know it's so hard to win in Miami especially as a protein College a little different protein tough
cat's got money it's Miami it's fine it's tough Yeah always start off good but that burnout coming then you about to go to Texas yeah yeah you already know in the be it's tough it's tough 69 back in your yeah back in my day for real yeah yeah that's tough though it you know what I'm say tell Freddy T you really ran into Miami streets dog better believe five minutes away that would be four cell phones for real had Fred had a house phone this [ __ ] the big boy he got the Worst body
in the on the whole set but money was going through Florida back then I never got paid I never got paid a DME you did I believe that no I never got paid a DME you didn't get paid a d i don't I like how you worded that I never got paid a dime I never got paid either we we we we we've seen the you 30 for 30 you never saw me on it you didn't see me Hing hugging nobody no no sir no sir hey knew that stuff Would come back you I'll leave
this for RC because uh he's so eloquent and I love the way he just word things biggest pivot we always ask our guest what what was their biggest pivot in life and for somebody who's lived the life that you had it could be so many things but when you look back on your life your career whatever it may be what is a moment you point to and say that this point this moment is one of the reasons Ed Reed has become what he is I met Ray Rohan and Monty Sanders and we trained together and
mindset changed I changed my eating spiritually things changed and that's when I was going through some stuff you know and them brothers them brothers helped me to take my professional career to another level you know um you can look at what all of them doing right now You know plus a lot of my brothers who were already in the league you know Reggie was still there obviously but you know there was a time when we was just in Jamaica working on this PLT of space training and that was more of stop eating certain stuff and
you know doing certain things and that was that was huge man because I mean obviously I eat a lot different now like you know I'm cooking [ __ ] I just ate um wallnuts as the as the protein over some Nachos you know like it look just like ground beef but it's Walnut you know so like I truly understood taking care of the body and that's what it was about it was mind body and spirit you know and um that's what my brother um actually named this company MBS but that's what it was about out
with them brothers you know and it was it was line order with Rohan you know I mean you know Rohan like he's straight to it like and his eating like we we ate some stuff there with Jamaica I'm like bro I can't eat this like green banana like what is this bro it's good it's funny like I eat this [ __ ] like I eating this [ __ ] you know but that was one of my biggest pivots bro cuz you know growing up in Miami at the time a a lot of cats had we
all had condos downtown cats had money party buses going around it's a party every weekend in Miami and I used to find myself on my balcony Chilling looking at the party bus people calling me to meet him out and I'm like nah I'm good that was it man like really changing and not going out as much you know looking at things different I found myself in that that te- spot or one of them spots I think it was king of and I'm walking out I went to the bathroom I came back as a bunch of
my brothers came back and they got stacks of ones on the table and I can't get back to the table Cuz they got a line people sitting down took seatack I'm like man I could have swore I had a conversation with y'all about putting $11,000 out of every check into an account nobody answered me mhm I got mad and left I'm out of here like I'm done they want put the money in the account but they had the money sitting on the table yeah I'm out of here man and it was more To me I
ain't say it to them I'm like bro I'm out of here like yeah I I can't do this no more the like we're all Brothers like we think about the Brotherhood but there are people you become Clos or to based on your experiences with it whether it's through your team whether it's in life uh your brother someone that you're closely associated with just in everything you've accomplished Ray Lewis yeah lost a child recently yeah I that is an Unimaginable thing to me yeah to have to bury your own child have you been able to you
know talk to him and support him yeah you know through that how were you or were you able in any way to use some of your experiences to help him or is that situation just like hey man I'm here when you need me yeah I was just I was there more or less to listen um when I finally did sit down with my bro it was more or less to listen than anything I gave my opinions and you Know stuff I've been through and related it but it was more to listen than anything and let
my brother Venton get stuff out of him that he needed to get out M you know I can't speak for for Lou but I know that hurting I know it hurted him from when I first met him because he didn't have his boys then you know and this I know this something we talk about in our society though I don't know the dynamic of his relationship but I know it's something In our society on where you know either fathers or there or not there you know but the fathers that want to be there you know
is tough cuz those women might do stuff in spite of you because they wanted to be with you they can't put their pride to side and let you be the father you know what I'm saying I'm not just talking about his situation because I I went through my own situations where you know men the Woman didn't work out but we see eye to eye you know for to some degree we still have our friction just try not to let that rub off on our kid right you know what I'm saying and that's tough man that's
tough man cuz the system is built against us you know and when you have your kids father there no father there but the structure the environment is bad no resources that's what you get man I felt I felt like my bro situation honestly Reminded me of my brother and that's where my relate came in at cuz they going to come a point where y'all we all got kids you can think about when we were young at some point Point our parents a know what we were doing for me that was probably like nine or 10
