today on Dr Oz Superstar Jennifer Lopez is here I'm excited to be on Dr Oz her beauty that body Jayla reveals how she keeps it all together you ever look at your urine that's the first time in 10,000 interviews that I've done in my life that anybody asked me the color of my pink coming up next on Dr Oz thank you all very much Jennifer Lopez has the most famous body in the world with women everywhere wanting to emulate her legendary curve so what's it like to grow older when everyone is watching and scrutinizing your
every move well we're about to find out Jennifer Lopez come on out [Applause] here than [Applause] you thank you they're going to rush the stage with you it's so sweet I love [Applause] it I'm excited to be on Dr Oz like I'm excited to have you here so much fun thank so you've been famous since you're in your 20s which gives you about two decades of growing older in the public eye yes it's so true true I still feel like I'm you know when people say that I forget you know that I've been doing it
that long and that also that I'm in my 40s it's crazy when did that happen it sneaks up on you like that yeah um you know just I don't know I've been doing it a long time I don't think about it as much anymore being in the public eye um I've just learned how to handle it you know and and try try to handle it with Grace you know the way my mom taught me to be and my dad and um just take it day by day you know keep my feet on the ground try
to stay healthy Mind Body Spirit I'm not just saying that cuz I'm on do o I'm not just I mean it I really do try actually Jennifer's mother is backstage she is backstage and they're all peppering her with questions if I know how she did it to make JLo so let me ask you about being in your 40s and dealing with the issues that women in their 40s have because there's always little issues your lack of energy yeah aches and pain some women have have weight gain what's your issue what holds you back um I
think for me because I still do a lot of shows and things like that my body is different I feel like I'm better in the sense that I can do everything I did in my 20s better now but and then because I've continued to do it but you know I will like I have a bad neck from injuries and I have like um my lower back from all the heels all the time you know it's just there're different things that start aching a little bit like when I wake up in the morning and I'm like
but this this is new you know and it's just like those type of things that that that's been my kind of issue lately so let me ask you a medical question okay you're well known around the world for your famous but okay buts goodies Maximus right and you actually many way I think people can attribute to you this crazy uh desire passion we have about the bods now right it's like an there's Obsession it's a booty craze going on right now yeah so what do you think about that I don't know I think it's I
think it's great like even when I first came out and I I openly spoke about it like about how I wasn't shaped like the other actresses at that time I was doing mostly acting even before I did my first album and it was unusual you know that there was somebody out there who wasn't at that time it was about waes and supermodels and everybody was tall and thin and you know this was a new thing and I was asked about it and that you know how do you feel you know you're more curvy and this
I was like I grew up around that the women all look like that where I was from you know and the Bron was like it wasn't a weird thing to me you know what I mean it was like that's what everybody looked like and that was my kind of idea of beautiful you know so I took that with me and I think because of that and because I I kind of stood proud on it it wasn't something like yeah I'm always trying to lose weight or whatever I didn't take that stance my stance was just
like that's normal and it's okay well a lot of it comes back to this body image issue which folks develop early in their life yeah and I just you know you touched on this but I would love to understand what is it that your parents said to your friends did for you your relatives were doing that made you comfortable Jennifer Lopez big but tell I'm going to tell you my mom has a big butt and so in our house can we bring Mom out here defend herself and my dad but it's a big butt in
a good way and so my dad loved it oh you know what I mean so it in our house it was like you know she would make fun of herself about having a big butt and my dad would be like I love it and so to me it was again a beautiful thing to be curvy it wasn't a bad thing and um and I grew up with that and then I and of the three sisters I had the biggest butt and we talked about that it was so like you know it's like Jennifer has the
biggest butt you know so crazy but that's what gave me a good image about it you know I wasn't self-conscious about it I wasn't made to feel negative about that part of me or any part of my body has there ever been a time in your life when you did have body issues where you were heavier than you wanted to be oh sure I mean after I had my babies you know you you gain all this weight for the first time you are pregnant I look how huge I mean my nose was fat it was
like everything was fat my feet were you know how it is when you have babies and um it was funny cuz right afterwards I love the jiggly belly you know you have the jiggly belly the skin that hangs a little bit and I kind of loved it cuz I was so in love with the babies like in the first two or three days I was like look at this little Jiggly belly and then I was like oh my God this damn jiggly belly what am I going to do with it I got to start working
out and I decided to actually do a triathlon a triathlon yes it was so stupid I mean I I don't know what possessed me to think I'd never done a triathlon before in my life why I would want to do it after having kids at you know 37 or 38 years old or whatever I was at the time was you know I don't know what possessed me you have crazy thoughts when you're pregnant and so but I did and I saw it through and it helped me get back in shape a little bit not all
the way there but well you may have crazy thoughts in some areas but you have some very wise thoughts when it comes to your health so Jennifer's agreed to share with you some of her best ideas of getting healthy and stay sh come on thank you so much we can go in a lot of different places but the first tip that Jennifer feel very passion about sharing with you is something I must say I have mentioned once in a while on this show but I want you to hear it from Jennifer Lopez what is it
water water lots of water believe it or not it does help keep your weight down it make you know obviously keeps you hydrated you can talk talk more about all of the benefits but for me it just feels good it's mostly what I drink all the time so so how do you know if you've drunk enough water I don't I don't like count it I I I I just drink it all day it's it's the thing I drink I'm so happy you came this I want to share with you a little tip that might come
in handy you can use this at cocktail parties and public events so do you ever look at your urine or you must you see the no every day yeah so the color when it comes out describe it to me um it's kind of you know light yellow good yeah so here's the rule of thumb you want to drink enough water that's a first time in 10,000 interviews that I've done in my life that anybody asked me the color of my [Applause] pink so something new every day go ahead it changes your world so here's the
rule of thumb from now on if you can read through your urine you don't have to literally do it but if you could have read through the urine that clear you're drinking enough water doing good yeah that's I would say that's me perfect all right now couple rapid fire questions do you smoke no do you drink no how much sleep do you get I try to do between s and N9 hours at night I love 11 if I could ever get it rarely um but I love it and um usually I'm between six and eight
that's a real gift when you say you don't drink you don't drink at all you just drink no I'm not a I'm not a drinker I just never started it was another one of those things my mom just never you know like Don't drink don't do drugs you're gonna die like okay you know I just like in my head yeah but you know you put those chits in your your bank of health and it shows up after all it's true that and like staying out of the sun there was a time when I just didn't
take Sun at all I think in through my 20s and 30s and it really saved my skin I think and I understand also that you're into affirmations and meditation I am very much so how's that changed you a lot um I just feel like we all operate and we don't even realize it on such negative thoughts all the the time mostly what goes on through our mind and our subconscious is negative like oh I should have could have done this better oh I'm so dumb I so stupid this do you know what I mean like
that's how we think all the time and I never thought about how I think and then when I started paying attention to my thoughts and changing them and saying you know what thank you for sharing that brain or Spirit or whatever is going on in there but you know what I am doing good I am better I am trying you know and redirecting those thoughts to be more positive thoughts and affir like I want me and my children are always healthy um I am you know we live a joyous life you know things like this
every single day really help redirect me from the beginning of my day and it's hard to do but sometimes it just you know out to the universe I accept all the good things the universe has to offer you know what I mean just things like that every single day just help you to start off your your mind and your your day in the right way and it it helps you know what I mean beautifully stated a poet you're I'm so not a PO I'm not I'm not so the next thing that you say is critical
for your well-being is the breakfast you eat but before I get to this breakfast specifically you actually involved in a very important movement get women to think differently about their bodies absolutely I think you know it's about loving yourself I recently wrote a book called true love that was about the first year that I went on my first world tour which was only a couple years ago um I know you would think I had toured the world many times but I didn't I was always movies and music and juggling I thought you were kidding you
really only my first world tour was in 2011 and 12 and I wrote a book about it I had just got divorced and it was a thing and what I learned was that you really need to love yourself and that's what was wrong in a lot of my for me in my relationships and examining that time and everything my music even get the book I don't want to talk but but why why is it but it's the message of loving yourself why does going care of yourself how does it going on a world t tour
teach you that because I like I said I had just got div divorce I was going on the road taking on this thing I had never done as a single mom for the first time and as I went through my songs cuz I had done 10 albums at that point and never been on tour and started listening to them and realizing how autobiographical the music was how I recorded if you had my love or you know love don't cost a thing or different things about what I was going through and it made me think about
all the relationships in my life and it made me think about all the choices I had made and the different times in my life just to put together this show so the backdrop of that show became like what do I want to say to these fans that I haven't seen for 14 years and have never seen me on tour what show what message do I want to say and so I wind up wound up being a very kind of again autobiographical show this is who I am this is who you think I am this is
who I really am this is my message as an artist which is about love always Sayang about love um and this is where I am right now my kids came into my life they changed everything as they do and and um because they show you what real unconditional love feels like and you learn that and then you start thinking about relationships in a different way and so all of that happening at the same time got me to the short message of you know what I haven't been taking care of myself or loving myself H in
a way and I know that sounds crazy be like of course je loves herself but the truth is is like when you do love yourself you don't allow certain things to happen you know and you can't keep blaming everybody else for your relationships and what's happening like oh the other person messed up it's like no you're doing something you're doing something wrong so all of that stuff got me to thinking like I want to take care of myself better because I want to be great for my kids I love I love talking to you oh

feel more energized less stressed and healthier from head to toe all new Dr o that's coming up on Monday [Applause] we are back with Jennifer Lopez and she's here to talk about a new women's health movement I love that you're doing this educate everybody okay so again talking about you know kind of getting better and working on ourselves all the time one of the things that I wanted to do I realized is share what I've learned you know I've had all the personal trainers you could have I've tried every you know diet in the world
and everything and one of the things that I realized is like me obviously men and women's bodies are very different but also how they make up and you could probably talk about that a lot more than I could specifically but the way we burn energy our fat is different all this kind of stuff and one of the things that I wanted to do is take some of the products and things that you know create products that were made for women by women so important done that yeah it's important because we always ignore that in fact
a lot of the tests are by doctors done on men so we ignor the women and so and a lot of the products out there are for men like any ents any fat burners all that kind of stuff that's out there is really for men it's not for women it's bodies and chemistry so this is very very good smoo there's a very very good smoothie Shake Betty good so educate me about how you make it do you have this in the mornings right I have this I have a shake every morning because I always feel
like again starting off your day in the right way cuz we all kind of fall off towards the end of the day like okay but this um I always am happy when I have my Shake in the morning I like a protein shake it gives me good energy um it's low in calories ours is like 80 calories with the protein powder women I don't even know if you guys know this but as we get older we need protein probably even more than men I don't even I don't know the men's stats men need it a
lot too listen protein is the foundation for sure yeah for sure we have to have protein start losing that muscle and everything start falling yes it does fall we don't want that she with sad eyes she said with sad eyes all right we just got to keep working we got to keep it going so I like starting off with the body the the name of the company is that I work with and I'm partners with is body lab and we've done the Four Women by women products fat burners uh detox cleanses uh all kinds of
stuff there's a website and an app that will help tailor something just for you it's almost like having your own nutritionist I also put on there all my favorite exercises that I know work that I H that I do myself all kinds of stuff so this is an amazing thing that I and again lots of great products a lot of green based green based stuff which I learned about and want my kids to know about cuz I didn't eat that way growing up no I ate a lot of rice and beans fried food and I
love it I love it I still love it um and I still like to eat it but I try to eat healthy more than I do that so when you make your ber ber good smoothie but I put I put all the food in here for you I put some yogurt in here for you yeah it's Greek yogurt you can even do a little bit of honey if you want some lemon put some honey in there yes we can put a little bit of this we got squeeze a little lemon too just a little bit
I don't like to use too much honey it's just a little tasty just a little just a little a little dollop of honey yes that's good and here's your powder oh and here's the protein powder obviously this is the good stuff just a scoop of that and you add lemon to it I just add lemon because lemon makes everything taste better I like to cook you cook a lot I do I love to cook I don't get to cook a lot but I love to cook the kids are going to love that with Mom cooking
okay no they love when I cook I'm going to turn this baby on and oh it looks good delicious pretty fast now this delicious I made this for you thank you I'm kidding I didn't make this but someone I trust made this see if you like somebody made it for you for me oh so good it's wonderful it's delicious and it's a great way to start your day yeah that's all you need you don't need a whole bunch more than that because she was able to drink things like this she's maintained a fantastic uh Health
profile so she's out Jennifer doing all kinds of crazy things including making wonderful movies and her newest one is called the boy next door she had to get in the shap of her life I'm told is that true I did I did I had to do this love scene with a 24-year-old and so and so I was a little self-conscious um but yeah I I got I I had to pull it together for that one well the movie is superb it really is it's not what I expect it's a thriller and in the movie Jenifer
plays a single mom who has made a I say bad sexual choice you know cross the line cross the line bad decision with a teenage boy and things sort of got out of control and when she tries to break it all off take a look yeah where's the damn video why are you so angry what you did in my classroom today you've been avoiding me what do you think this is some kind of game we're playing here this is real life that is my home okay you're doing things in front of my kid in front
of my husband yeah lying husband okay what's your plan what do you think what do you think we're going to date we're going to go on family vacations together what do you think is going to happen here it is you get a feel for it it's a nailbiter and therefore you don't just act in it you produce the movie you must be proud as heck I am proud I am proud I started producing more in the past couple of years and um this this movie I'm very proud of the end I the end is don't
the end I'm not going to tell you I don't tell you be like this it's one of those you're going to have it's a lot of fun I'm super proud of it it's a popcorn Thriller in the best sense of a thriller movie that you could ever have women idolize you for many good reasons as you think about them we can tell the love in the room just towards you they want to Make a Better Lives for themselves way you have for yourself what advice do you give to these young women I think you have
to when you're talking about Success personal or professional um there's different things um professional I think it's the people who put in the extra work I put in a lot lot of extra work and and it gets tiring it's it's not the easiest thing all the time but I always noticed that even within my own industry the ones who work harder the ones who stay later the ones who just are willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done are the ones who wind up going far um as far as personal success I
think you know it's about being happy it's about being good and hold on your own first a whole person on your own so then you can share that happiness with other people in your life um and that takes work too and when you put in that work on yourself by exercising eating right doing your affirmations um that's all loving yourself then you can you can be happy because you know that you're complete on your own and then you can have as many friends and great relationships healthy relationships um because you only make good choices for
yourself when you love yourself you're a very wise woman I I learned the hard way let me ask you one last question okay you're in the press all the time yeah literally every day yeah and much of what I suspect not quite accurate many misconceptions about you exist what do you think is the biggest one the biggest one I think it's been dispelled over the past few years especially since I started doing American Idol I think people used to there was a lot of stuff written about me early in my career about being a diva
about wanting like white candles and you know like all this stuff had to be a certain way which was never true but I think once I did American Idol people got to see the real me and um like me a person um because I didn't have a script or a song I was doing it was just me out there talking my feelings and acting myself and uh so I I I don't know that I have anything to dispel I am who I am I think people know that at this point I've been around long enough

[Applause] you feel like jaal and hi like there are two of you one minute you're happy and upbeat and the next you're irritable and snapping at your husband or your kids well today we have a plan to level out your mood swings it's something my next guest has been looking for sometimes I feel my moods have a mind of their own I try to start my day with the best of intentions my mood swings can go from one side to the other I can be either extremely happy and then get extremely upset or angry the
littlest thing can just set me off I can feel an instant anger growing inside of me when I get these mood swings especially when I'm getting dressed I will start to get a little warm and when I get that warm feeling it almost feels as if my Skin's expanding I get very agitated I'll go from nice and calm to very frustrated almost like I want to throw something some of the most random things will set me off you think you can maybe take out the trash yeah I'll get that a little bit and he'll look
at me and ask me what's wrong nothing I'm very short and there's no coming back from that I know anything I say for the next 20 minutes is going to be ugly seriously can I eat my sandwich first is there any reason why you can't get it now I guess the bear is coming out my husband nicknames me the bear that's because I can be in a very happy funloving laughing kind of mood he may be able to touch my arm and I'm not in the mood for that right then he needs to wait 5
more minutes but he doesn't know that it's that time frame that just I have mentally that I don't have to Express I get very frustrated and when he tries to hug me I I tend to shoe away and I don't mean to I I almost push him away and it makes me feel horrible inside but it's just how I am but I get hot inside just very warm and that's part of what makes me very irritable I definitely have two Polar Opposites I have the be side of me and I have the mayor of Happyville
my husband calls me the mayor of Happyville because I like to make people happy hunger could be a trigger for me it almost makes me hangry I will get very frustrated very easily I kind of describe my moods as a roller coaster and it's a cycle that I can't break so Amry is joining us how do you feel after seeing those mood swings on tape it's a little intimidating um kind of seeing that reminds me of of the things I'd like to control and the things that I have not had a very good time doing
um I'm not a horrible person it's just those mood swings affect my home life a lot where do they come from they don't seem to come out of anywhere I don't know I I really don't I wake up I'm pretty much ready to go start my day I'll go out for a run I'll come do some errands I come back I start doing my things and this time frame goes off in my head that says hey I need him to do something or if my daughter's home from school hey why why isn't she up yet
and then I get mad and I don't know why I get mad it's just a it's a little trigger what what toll is it taking on you on your family um I think I I make my husband feel very shut out I shut him off emotionally I shut them off physically and it's not all the time but it's more than not I know these are hard things to acknowledge and I appreciate how honest you about them if you're willing to take a walk back to the trth tube I want to show you some of the
results we got from testing you okay com back so we start off with some Basics things that often times you're a cause of some of the moon what I don't want you to walk out of here feeling is that it's your fault okay often drivers of this process things that you actually have control over you just didn't know it so for example we checked your blood sugar and this is good news your blood sugar levels are actually pretty good and we know that blood sugar can throw you up you know in in a tizzy but
yours seem to stay pretty stable and we actually checked in long term they're sort of stable too then I thought what about your your hormones and your thyroid is the most obvious one to check for because it's sort of the thermostat of the body again good news yours is completely normal and it can affect mood great yeah now there there are lots of other hormones and as we age our hormones go from being a stabilizing Force you can deal with anything when you're a young woman to a destaing force okay that stated there are some
areas that I think we have to focus on some lifestyle numbers and there are three in particular you're not alone with this all right this is happening All Over America there is caffeine yes there is sleep and there's the foods you're eating and which ones you're eating in particular so I'm going to walk you through this just to go over your numbers personally but I don't think you're alone again caffeine you're drinking about three regular sodas a day that white line there is normal you want to be there I think your caffeine input puts you
way above normal okay right now your sleep conversely you're not getting enough of I don't get a lot of sleep four hours a night we think right yes so you notice what's happening here you're having a little bit of a cycle too much caffeine then too little sleep and then for your diet you're grabbing for carbs and simple sugars all the time too much of that and look what's happening you're doing a wave you're going up caffeine down sleep up caffeine down sleep up carb simple sugars and and repeat and when we see this kind
of a wave in the lifestyle choices you're making not surprisingly those weakened hormones can't balance you out so your body starts to trip up on itself and I think that we can help you I have a very good plan to address that lot unbelievably up and down World you've created for yourself what would it mean for you to go from that up and down wave in life to a nice steady white line that we drew there where we supposed to live where you don't have the mood swings I think for me that's like winning the
lottery I think it holds me back a lot of times from a lot of the goals that I have you know whether it's trying to get a new personal record in a race or you know just making my husband feel more Lov because I love him I love how you saying that you want to be the best you can be you can't when you're jumping up and down like that all right so for everybody at home if you feel like you're in a roller coaster of emotions and you need to level off when we come
back I've got a plan to level out your mood swings stay [Applause] here next do you go from happy to sad to angry in an instant those mood swings might be more than just life's ups and downs they could be a sign of imbalance in your body learn what you can do to handle hormone Horrors the plan to level out your mood swings is next all new Dr Oz 10day total body overhaul feel more energized less stressed and healthier from head to toe all new Dr Oz that's coming up on Monday [Applause] you go from
happy to sad to angry in an instant or cry at the drop of a hat well you are not crazy your mood swings may actually be a sign that your body is out of balance psychotherapist Dr Mike Dow is back with the plan to level out your mood swings and you got to tell first of all if your mood swings are just regular ups and downs of life or are they really a sign of a deeper inbalance how do you know you have to ask ask yourself these four simple questions and Anar this is so
common so this is not just for you this is for everybody the first question do you notice that your mood swings correlate with your hunger or in your case hangry which I think is even a step beyond hungry right AB oh it is okay so that's number one so that's a yes I won't keep track by there are four questions you can figure out where you are in this Cascade yep number two do you find yourself cancelling or rescheduling plans because of your sleepiness or your moodiness that's kind of a maybe for me that's a
maybe yes number three do you find yourself turning to more and more caffeine to get through your day to level out that energy level that's always going up and down for me that's a definite that's a yes okay and number four do you find that some days or even some moments are a lot worse than others for absolutely no reason at all absolutely um there is no balance really and and that second question is probably probably def than a maybe my husband will decide maybe we shouldn't go yeah well and here's the thing Anar if
you answered yes to one or more you you could benefit from some of these mood leveling things we're we're going to reveal okay so let's get to the plan we got a couple steps coming back in Marie the first step is to focus on swapping out foods that you're sort of eating a lot of now the simple carbs you pointed to in tooth tube for others that will boost your serotonin levels yes so an Mar now first of all you revealed something in your food diary and that is that you love chick I'm not going
to say the brand but you also love ziti you love lasagna is that right and I think you're using those things to actually level out your moon now listen you need carbohydrates because they're comfort food and I'll tell you why they release serotonin in the brain Feelgood serotonin right now you don't want to go on one hand to the no carb diet because that's going to make you irritable it's even been called the Atkins attitude but you also don't want to do what you're doing which is all bad add simple carbs that is actually putting
you on a roller coaster enir so what you want to do is you want to swap from the white pasta the white bread white pasta chips cookies and you you want to swap over to sustainable good carbs this carb swap is amazing beans a lot of people don't realize that beans have carbs quinoa berries now these are very different what they do because of the fiber that they provide they're still carbohydrates meaning they're still going to give you Feelgood serotonin in the brain but what they're going to do is they are going to leave the
stomach very slowly that means you're going to get that slow steady dose of Serotonin as opposed to the rushes of Serotonin and then the blood sugar Crasher on right now does that make sense yeah I guess that would mean I would absorb the the vitamins and stuff that's in that a little bit better as we're right now I'm probably just as depleted it's going to help you absorb so many things in so many ways and feel Fuller longer too right so you're not going to go to the I know sometimes you like a little fast
food as well you're not going to go to those things so mood H that's a food swap now we have a drink swap to steady out your energy levels and we want to do this in a very wise way so I know it's hard to just give up all the stuff that you're currently craving in an incredibly strong way the drink swap now Dr o this is so common so the the good news is we're not going to take caffeine away from you what we want to do again we want to make a swap not
taking it away just replacing something healthier so the drink swap white tea black tea green tea now these teas have something amazing in them it's called alanine now it does something sort of miraculous in thatal well it's calming but it also simultaneously makes you alert so it's alert and calm and it's also steady so for example do you know how many health benefits and mood benefits if you switch from soda to green tea your waistline but I think more importantly your mood it it is going to make all the difference in the world okay make
sense that's that's it's doable now now enough about food let's deal with the emotional issues around the mood swings because they're there and so we want you use a cognitive behavioral tool sounds like a big word but it's actually very very simple Michael this is your expertise yes so cognitive behavioral therapy clinically proven it just means the way that we think our thoughts affect the way that we feel now what happens when we're in a bad mood unfortunately what we do is the thing that probably makes that mood a lot worse so when we're in
a bad mood what do we do we yeah we bark you know you you say to your husband don't touch me you go from what what is it called the the mayor of Happy Town to uh the bear okay you know and when we're in those moods you know nothing in our life is different you're still sitting in bed nothing has changed but look at this you've gone from glass half full to glass half empty and what I want you to do is I want you to go back to glass half full so what happens
