hi my name is brianne i am a pa a physician assistant um and i am going to talk to you guys about my career um so briefly what a pa is is a basically a healthcare provider that works closely with physicians we we help to treat patients diagnose patients and we can work in the operating room assisting surgeons work in the hospital work in clinics we can prescribe medications do certain procedures in the office and things like that uh the way i became a pa was i got my bachelor's degree in biology most most of
the time you require a degree in some sort of science whether it's biology or physiology biochemistry microbiology something like that a lot of pa schools also require doing volunteer hours or health care hours a lot of the times they require what's called direct patient contact so before i went to pa school and while i was in undergrad i had to work for basically i worked with people with developmental disabilities to get in a couple hundred health care hours and usually that's required just because pa school is such a fast-tracked uh type program and you are
required to to do a lot as a pa when you graduate so they just want to make sure you're as qualified as as possible and you get as much experience as you can then when you go to pa school pa school is usually about two to three years it's a super intense program i'm pretty sure every school has mandatory attendance so you're usually in the classroom from eight to five every day usually there's two to three exams per week at least for my the program i went to um impossible to have a job during that
time um it's just a very intense program but then when you get done it's great um the thing i like most i think about being a pa is quality of life um it's very different from that of you know a surgeon for example where you know a surgeon may have be working 60 to 80 hours a week whereas i usually work about 30 to 40 hours a week it's a good quality of life get lots of time with my family and friends weekends off there's a lot of flexibility in my position right now i work
in gynecologic oncology but i could really work anywhere i can work in emergency medicine orthopedics family medicine really anything so lots of flexibility in terms of where you work um your hours you can work part time full time if you want to work 60 hours a week you could so uh yeah i really like my job and if you have any questions you can email miss myers and she will let me know all right bye
