South Korean investigators say president yuno is refusing to testify after being detained Wednesday morning he faces Insurrection charges over his brief Declaration of Martial law last month Yun remained defiant before being taken in I cannot help but feel disappointed to see that the investigators are pushing ahead with an in valid detention warrant but I have decided to accept the request despite it being an illegal investigation to prevent Bloodshed as investigators forced their way into the residents but I stand against this investigation you relented after about 1,000 officers reportedly swarmed his residents bypassing barricades with ladders
there were no reported clashes with presidential security who had blocked an attempt to detain him earlier this month his detention Wednesday Drew mixed reactions from the public I think it was wrong for him to declare martial law so I'm glad the warrant was issued and he was successfully detained I hope what comes next next is done in accordance with the law as someone who voted for him I think his detention is deplorable my heart aches because we can't protect president Yun Sono Yun hadn't left his residence since the National Assembly voted to impeach him last
month on Tuesday he skipped the first hearing of his impeachment trial in the Constitutional Court the next hearing is scheduled for Thursday but local media say his detention may affect the court proceedings now earlier my colleague Yoko nimura spoke with NHK world's Kim chanju she told us about the mood outside the corruption investigation office near Soul where Yun was taken the motor gaug caring Yun arrived a few hours ago and it's been a bit racus since the president's supporters began ring here uh they've been en chanting calling for his release uh there's major police presence
keeping order as well as a lot of media teams from around the world uh it kind of shows how historic this moment is uh this is the first time a South Korean president has been detained while in office and there's a lot of outrage but there's also relief among un critics and those who feared the standoff with investigators with dragon among politicians the floor leader of y's ruling people power party Kong has called the detention illegal but the leader of the main opposition Democratic party eang says now is the time to quickly restore constitutional order
so now that he's detained what's next for you well we understand he being treated as the main suspect for uh inci an Insurrection through martial law so um investigators has lot of uh a lot to ask him uh they say they have over 200 pages of questions before he was president Yun served as prosecutor General so he does have some legal Savvy uh we've heard local media speculate he will likely choose to remain silent during his time here uh well investigators can uh detain Yun for up to 48 hours so the clock is ticking uh
right now we are waiting to see whether they will seek an arrest warrant uh that will allow them to significantly expand the time they have with UN in detention now for more we're joined by Mr sugya Masins he's a former Japanese ambassador to the United States a former Vice foreign minister and a former political minister to Soul thank you so much for joining us thank you the only is mine thank you so Mr Ambassador so much after so much resistance you now sits in detention and it seems this turmoil will continue for some time what
is your assessment of what's Happening well to say the least uh this uh doesn't improve the image of South Korea the current president sitting is being detained or to be possibly arrested in 48 hours soon uh and yet everybody believes that this is been done on the basis of rule of law and the Democratic kind of procedures so what we do hope is that the sooner the better the relation and the uh the political tal is going to be slightly calmed down right and Mr Ambassador Japan South Korea relations considerably improved since y took office
how do you think this situation might affect its relation with Japan I mean this is a special year for the two country that's right well this year happens to be something we uh supposed be uh celebrating the 60th anniversary of the normalization of AR and Japan uh so we are really hoping that things going to be celebrated in a appropriate manner uh but uh it is up to the current people to decide what they're going to decide it's not us uh that said uh everybody should be hoping that we are going to be able to
celebrate the 60th anniversary of normalization and now do you think the trilateral relationship between between Japan South Korea and the US might be affected by the situation well uh of course uh this uh uh very good s multilateral relations among Soul Tokyo and Washington DC been done by Joe Biden and yo and then prime minister Kida and yet uh why this is been happened uh because uh we do believe that we have to get more closely and more you know uh uh cooperation uh uh cooperating with uh each other uh part of the reason is
uh because of the uh growing uh uh posture on the part of China so uh this doesn't change therefore whoever is going to just sit in the presidency whoever is going to sit in prime minister and the president in Washington DC this fundamental kind of importance of trial cooperation is not being changed right in stance against China it's absolutely uh important well I wouldn't say stand against China but uh to to cope with uh Growing Power of China we do uh uh need the betterment of uh three allies countries I mean allies meaning soul and
Washington Tokyo and Washington and soul and Tokyo is a very good the neighboring country thank you so much for your insights please stay with us we have more questions for you later in the program
