hey everyone and welcome back to another video on Lumber Capital lyard we have been facing some pretty cold temperatures here in Pennsylvania and for us that means 18° weather multiple days on end and part of what comes along with that is our logs freeze and if you are a saw Miller in the north you know what I'm talking about with these ice bricks they're sometimes impossible to get through and I've been struggling with it all morning so let's get into [Music] it the first couple logs that we milled up this morning were not so good
I mean it was just waving all over the place and so the blade ended up snapping we ended up putting on a new one and this blade that we have on right now is doing a lot better than the one this morning was doing I don't know whether that's that these logs are less Frozen than some of the first ones we milled up because here's the thing you can't tell if your log's Frozen or not and this is the bane of AA Miller's existence is is this log Frozen is it not you know you do
not know until you Mill it there's not I mean how could you really know so how can you prevent this well here's the other thing there's really no preventing unless you want to go and buy a bunch of blankets and wrap all your logs up in blankets like little babies that might save you some time not so anyways what does it really mean when a log's froze it and you Mill It Anyways well I don't know if you can see it too much with this Lumber but it's Ultra wavy like it's really really waving and
it can get really bad um on the ends are usually the parts that are most Frozen that only makes sense right um and so you'll either get a a dip or a swoop at each end of your log where it's most Frozen at and this all has to do with just the moisture level of the log right if the if the log was completely dry it wouldn't freeze so whether a log is more Frozen or less Frozen just has to do with the moisture content in the log and considering that each log is different when
it comes to this you're not going to kill and dry the log itself you're going to kill and dry the lumber right I've never heard of kill and drying logs before maybe I'm out of the loop let me know in the comments if you've heard of kill and drying logs but anyways that's it for my Spiel on Frozen logs let's get to Milling some of these on the deck and see if we run into this problem again with these ones because I'm pretty sure that the ones that we are just Milling up a couple of
minutes ago before we started this video they're a lot more dry which means I didn't have as much trouble I mean this is just you can tell how it it's just not nearly as much moisture as some of the other ones so let's get to Millan come on dog [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so I cut some 1 by8 out of that log and unfortunately it was frozen if you just want to take a look at this you can see where it swooped um so both ends are snug up against The Other Board here
but you can see where the whole middle kind of well it it's not uh parallel at all is it look at that Gap there oh you guys these Frozen logs are driving me crazy it's like this every year we just have to get through it but you know sometimes with people's projects it doesn't matter too much if there's a little swoop in the board other times it matters a great deal and that's what will get you a bad review so that's why uh I just do the best I can and one thing that you can
do to help is go slow it's I mean it's the only thing really just going a whole lot slower which really drives me crazy because I get bored I'm like oh my gosh I'm going so slow but um you can go just you can end up making it a whole lot better if you go slow um parts that would wave going the normal speed you can kind of get it to not as much really slowing down your speed um the other thing is carbide blades if you want to foot that bill uh for a carbide
blade they're about $100 a blade um and that can help uh with frozen logs a little bit if not a lot it just depends so anyways that's it for today's video I hope that you guys enjoyed if you did make sure to give it a thumbs up and subscribe if you haven't yet other than that we'll see you back here next time bye
