and former president Trump focused on immigration trying to pin the situation at the border on vice president Harris while Harris criticized Trump for urging Republicans to kill a bipartisan border deal Trump responded uh by talking about migrants eating people's pets in Springfield Ohio something our moderator David mure fact check take a look in Springfield they're eating the dogs the people that came in they're eating the cats they're eating they're eating the pets of the people that live there and this is what's happening in our country and it's a shame I just want to clarify here
you bring up Springfield Ohio and ABC News did reach out to the city manager there uh he told us there have been no credible reports of specific claims of pets being harmed injured or abused by individuals within the Immigrant Community let's bring in PolitiFact executive director Aaron shakman to help put some of that and other claims from both candidates in context here eron you heard David there uh and PolitiFact I know has looked into this as well so what did you find about that claim that we heard from former president Trump last night well it's
great to be with you Diane and it was awesome to see David uh push back with facts When Donald Trump made that claim this is a baseless c claim that started on social media that somehow winded up in the mouth of the Republican Party presid presidential candidate um this has been disproven by a city spokesperson by the mayor and the city police who all say this is not happening uh Donald Trump after the debate went to his true social uh uh and posted a video that doesn't show what he says it shows uh and specifically
not targeting this Haitian immigration population in Springfield Ohio so this is a claim that we rated pants on fire David fact him correctly vice president Harris also claimed that former president Trump left the worst unemployment since the Great Depression what does the data show on that claim yeah this claim rate's false uh the unemployment rate did Spike uh to a post Great Depression record of 14.8% but that was in April of 2020 right as the pandemic began to rage Trump was in office then but he didn't leave Biden or Harris with an unemployment rate nearly
that High by December 2020 the rate had fallen back down to 6.4% today it sits at 4.2% and the Bureau of Labor Statistics adjusted its jobs numbers for 2023 to show more than 800,000 fewer jobs were added than previously thought TR uh excuse me previously thought uh Trump called that a fraud by the Biden Harris Administration can you put that into context yeah I'm just going to put it into context using basic logic if it was a fraud why would the Biden Harris Administration release the revision at all um the Bureau of Labor Statistics in
August during the DNC revised down the number of jobs added in this country by 88,000 Trump is right about that but economists on the right and the left and anywhere in between say that's just a normal part of how we count our jobs so we ready that claim pants on fire as well uh meanwhile Harris said us oil production had its largest increase in history under the Biden Harris Administration you say that's half true can you explain yeah for a nerd this isn't a fun one um basically Biden uh KLA Harris was prepared to rebut
claims that she was bad on energy policy but she flubbed the line uh she talked about the biggest increase in history uh we are producing more oil in the United States than ever before but it's not actually the biggest increase year-over-year uh we have had bigger increases under President Barack Obama and president Donald Trump so she had the talking point prepared she just said it incorrectly PolitiFact executive director Aon trachman Erin I know we could dissect this whole debate and come up with many many more to impact but we'll have to leave it there thank
you thank you
