[Music] s do s do s [Music] who to the blessed one the word the one the supremely enlightened one s s sadu Nam Bud Dees this evening we are going to learn another very significant Sut discourse Tau by the blessed one the name of this discourse is from angut section of sevens the water simil here suprem Buddha Compares all beings uh to people who are trying to uh get out of water or beings who are sunk in the great ocean and they effort to come out this is a very beautiful sutta and we can uh
use this Sut as a reflection not to miss this opportunity not to lose this process gift Su primot explains monks seven time types of individuals are to be found existing in the world how many types of in people seven types of individuals which seven there is the case where an individual sinks down once and stays sunk that is the first person second person there is the case where an individual on coming to the surface sinks down again he managed to come out but he goes back suprem explains with the Blessed once extraordinary knowledge there is
the case where an individual on coming to the surface stays there he neither reaches an island nor goes down but stays there stays on the surface next person there is the case where an individual on coming to the surface open his eyes and looks around he uh takes his head out of the water and looks around so he he can see where are the island is because now uh these beings are in uh in a great mass of water right in the great ocean uh they don't have they are helpless now if they want to
save their lives what should be done they have to come out of water and looking around first they have to uh recognize where the safe area is the island and then they have to as soon as possible they should try to swim towards that island so we have fallen into a a certain ocean what is that ocean ocean of sansara right oan of sansar so this uh sansar Journey has been compared to this falling into a great ocean here by the Supreme Buddha then Supreme buha explains there is the case where an individual on coming
to the surface heads across so he has seen the island and now he has started swimming towards the Island Sixth person there is the case where an individual on coming to the surface gains a foothold he tried his best he swam towards the island now he's about to H about to climb up the island is very close then there is the case where an individ ual on coming to the surface crosses over reaches the far Shore stands on High Ground a brami the seventh person has reached the safe place Island and now he is there
he experiences the Bliss of assurance Bliss of safety is the seventh person so now Supreme Buddha is going to explain the lives of these Disciples of these uh people in detail the blessed one explains and how does an individual ual sink down once and stay sunk who is the first person he sinks down once and stay sunk Supreme explains a big there is the case where an individual is endowed with exclusively dark exclusively dark un wholesome qualities what is found in his life only un wholesome dark qualities is sadha confidence found in his life no
he doesn't know the teachings of the Buddha and he uh hasn't associated with kalas instead he Associates with bad friends evil friends he doesn't know about uh precepts he engages in bodily misconduct verbal misconduct and mental misconduct he doesn't know the danger of defilements when anger invades his mind he is carried away with that by that anger when desires arise he's Carried Away by those desires he's like a slave of his own defilements from the beginning he he is entangled with UNH wholesome qualities he doesn't have any opportunity to escape from this dangerous situation so
Prim explains that is how an individual sinks down once and stays sunk do you remember any examples h no dadat is not in this category he uh he developed good qualities at the beginning right he met the Buddha he got the ordination we can talk about him in the next part of the suta what about a right isn't he in this category he is uh when he he was very young maybe a teenager right d spoiled his mind what did deata say yeah think about the danger of uh Association of bad people dadat was very
famous back then and he wanted to protect his status so he one day it occurred to him okay uh I need the political support so what should I do and he yes then he thought okay I should uh get this uh boy who is going to be the king in in future uh then I will be able to to uh do things as I wish so he uh displayed a miracle using his psychic powers by appearing uh as snakes the uh sitting on a chair in his balcony in his mention all of a sudden a
baby appeared on his lap and there were snakes all around that baby on the baby on the head uh in hands legs around the waist there were snakes the prince was alarmed and shocked and he shouted what is this what is this and then uh a sound came Don't Be Afraid Prince don't be afraid I am Noble dad and then the prince said okay if you are D if you are uh honest please appear in your normal uh appearance and then that baby disappeared de appeared there with robes and balls that is how they CAU
and sat very Ed and said oh this is our Noble D how Mighty he is and then he started looking after Dad dat sacrificing everything association with bad people then D suggested Prince even though you are very young you should get you should be the king as soon as possible because now who is the who was the present King his father you know this king's uh Minds we we can't trust them so when you grow up he will change his mind so you should be the king as soon as possible and uh then a SAT
asked okay how can I do that still my father my father is the king he's still alive and then they uh made a plot and said no you have to kill your father then this uh teenager this is that is the meaning of uh the a person sinks down once and stays sunk from his childhood he hung out with bad people all along his life he had bad qualities one day he tried a knife around his thigh and tried to enter the main chamber where the father was and but the soldiers suspected him and caught
him and uh he failed but he didn't give up finally he managed to kill his father by putting him in a prison exclusively dark un wholesome qualities from the beginning of his life and as a result he went to hell so this first kind of uh individual is headed to a bad destination uh does this person possess sadha no shame of wrongdoing no fear of wrongdoing effort to abandon un wholesome qualities no any wisdom no nothing okay think about this uh excellent knowledge of the Supreme Buddha to identify the lives of beings and to describe
them in detail okay who is the second person a person on coming to the surface sink down again okay and how does an individual on coming to the surface sink down again there is the case where an individual comes to the surface coming to the surface means like coming out uh to the surface of water means anyhow he uh gets the opportunity to associate with good people kalas with uh that conversation this person thinks oh now this my friend has very good sadha I also uh be a very faithful disciple I also should practice uh
these wholesome qualities and I should be ashamed of wrongdoing I should be uh afraid of wrongdoing I should do good things I should practice generosity precepts I should meditate and I should uh I also should realize this Dum these qualities are very good that's like coming to the surface but he s the neither remains nor grows but simply wains away due to some reasons due to his unwise consideration due to lack of mindfulness he can't can't continue with his sadha he he loses it on the way it stays for a while but it doesn't uh
get established in him he had some shame of wrongdoing at the beginning but when uh there are no kalas around him slow and gradually it fades away he was in the path to fear of wrongdoing but when parents are not around him when kalas are not around him he does bad things secretly and slowly and gradually that fear of wrongdoing disappears WS away so uh and he gives of energy and his wisdom is not developed maybe uh he had some kind of understanding at the beginning because kalas taught him the discourses of the Buddha but
later uh he maybe he uh became very busy and postponed uh listening to the dhma and his wisdom also decreases and disappears so these qualities neither remain nor grow but simply wi away that is how an individual on coming to the surface sinks down again again he starts doing bad things don't we know such people maybe our lives are like that at some time periods right sometimes we can't recognize the value of noble friends and uh we experience uh happiness and gratification ation with the association of bad friends we lose our wholesome qualities gradually okay
so do you understand the meaning of uh uh coming to the surface that initial enthusiasm or uh desire to do wholesome Deeds but uh uh the what's the meaning of uh sinks down again sinking down losing all the wholesome qualities right like the story of Dad D yes and at the beginning he he was very virtuous he followed the precepts and meditated very well he could develop geners and he achieved psychic powers oh here we have to understand Supreme explains the the factors leading to the decline and deterioration of these qualities some of them are
uh Association of bad friends the grave fault and fond of sleeping you understand and that means too much too much sleeping too much talking socialization too much U activities like busy siners uh Disobedience clinging to gains profits and Praises clinging to them craving like that's what happened to d right when he was virtuous meditated well achieved Jas even s praised him at the beginning because of that Fame gain and praise he became intoxicated and negligent he was conceited what is the result he lost his all the wholesome qualities and he forgot the help of the
Supreme Buddha help of the kalas that is very dangerous that's why we always uh remind children like when they become rich when they achieve uh stages of their education and when they grow up they should not forget the help of their parents they should be grateful to them otherwise they are going to lose their wholesome qualities what is the third person so does Supreme Buddha praise the first person the one who with exclusively dark and unome qualities no where is he heading to Hell animal world and Ghost World second person he is also heading to
a bad destination because he's losing whome qualities okay third person so uh does the blessed and praise that person what is his uh nature those qualities neither remains nor gross they decline incase and disappear third person the blard r explains and how does an individual on coming to the surface stay there third person he comes to the surface and stays there that means he need the swims towards the island no goes down but stays on the surface still has he escaped from the danger no because he can't do that forever right there is the case
where an individual comes to the surface seeing sadha is good shame of wrongdoing is good fear of R wrongdoing is good energy and wisdom with regard to Wholesome qualities is good these qualities are good but he s and other call is neither decline nor develop but remain at the same level every day same person he doesn't lose his sadha but there is no any significant growth he has his usual anger at the same level usual greed they are not abandoned so these qualities are not div Ved that is how an individual on coming to the
surface stays there is that praised by the blessed one no because he is also in danger of losing good qualities okay fourth person so now when we okay what about the second person like coming to the surface s down again like when we see people in the society uh sometimes they are very uh eager to practice aome qualities and they appreciate awesome qualities but uh on later occasions we may see them criticizing the D criticizing the noble friends and like that then uh should be should we be surprised looking at them oh what is what
has happened to them uh like that no we should be we should understand oh supr has taught this these things could happen right these things could happen there are are such people in this Society they are like coming to the surface and sink down sink down again there are such people due to their lack of mindfulness and uh unwise consideration or clinging to some defilements and third person uh on yeah coming to the surface stay there many people are like that right many people majority of people in this world is in this category right if
you think about the practitioners the who follow the DH among disciples in this time period many disciples are in this category right stays stays there no growth no decline in the time of the Buddha it was different it was very obvious how some disciples achieved the growth and development of Rapid development of this progress this path but now everything has changed the the ability to penetrate this Dharma has deteriorated has declined all the wholesome qualities the ability to develop wholesome qualities faculties are very weak now so we have to be very careful we have to
be very careful because Supreme budha is not with us physically to point out our mistakes and correct Us in the time of the Buddha suprem Buddha did that personally now we don't have that opportunity so we have to be very careful kalas are very rare nowadays right those days there are kalas AR other disciples everywhere nowadays very hard to find so we have to be very careful not to lose this opportunity okay next person suprem explains and how does an individual on coming to the surface open his eyes and look around when he opens his
eyes and looks around what can he see the island the safe area there is a case where an individual comes to the surface okay he he has been very fortunate to associate with kalitas so he understood the importance of sad okay and he uh wanted to practice the dharm uh he's endowed with shame of wrongdoing fear of wrongdoing he generated energy to abandon sub qualities by studying the Dharma using like inside meditation Serene meditation he develops his wisdom to see the true nature of this life because he he recognized the direction where he should go
and now he knows okay this is wrong wheel this right wheel these are bad they are bad friends and they are good friends uh these are sauras these are asaas untrue persons and true person uh these are precepts and uh these are un wholesome acts this is generosity this is greed and like that this is wisdom this is delusion he knows uh this is the wrong Eightfold Path this is the noble Eightfold Path he knows the dam very well and he knows uh the true nature of all conditioned things everything is subject to change our
life and uh is conditioned we are subject to aging sickness and death there is no any uh guarantee any safety here uh the life is full of uh fear of insecurity only secure places nibana end of suffering is The Liberation from the cycle of birth and death he has seen that secure island island here here is nian okay but still he hasn't started swimming there he he saw very clearly so now the the advantage is that now bad people or bad friends can no longer uh change his mind arouse wrong way in him arouse uh
lack of sadha in him because now he he has se he has recognized the extraordinary teacher one and only teacher who uh has the ability to te guide me he has seen he has recognized the teacher the Supreme Buddha isn't his life safe his life is safe who is this fortunate person who is that the one who saw the island stream entrant with the total ending of the first three fets he becomes a streem entrant know steadfast never again destined for states of War headed for enlightenment so stream entrant life his life is safe now
he has steadfast means uh uh now he possesses the four factors of extreme in what are the four factors of extreme ENT unshakeable confidence in the knowledge of the Buddha unshakable confidence in the DH unshakable confidence in the S and five precepts in an unbreakable way okay so uh basically wavering confidence in the triple gy and five precepts so he can see these factors within himself shame of wrongdoing is well established in him fear of wrongdoing is well established energy is well established PA is EST he has seen the four noble truths uh at its
in initial stage he is like that person coming to the surface and uh opening his eyes he looks around will he uh lose his qualities for any reason no so Prim mudha has guaranteed that a stream entrant will never lose his good qualities because he's headed to Enlightenment means with the total ending of the first three fets that is the reason they are uprooted they are no longer subject to arising what is the first fter identity weave Sak has been abandoned by a streem entrant he has seen very clearly in this life there is nothing
that can be regarded as permanent or with uh with the self maybe the body or feelings perceptions volutional formations Consciousness he has seen these five Aggregates of clinging as they really are that they are there is no control over them they are without self they arise body feeling perception formations Consciousness arise due to causes when the causes sees this body feeling perception formations Consciousness also sees he has seen the cause and effect mechanism or system in this life that is how his identity view is abandoned he doesn't want to to be uh born forever somewhere
he he knows such thing is impossible right a condition uh life or impermanent causes uh cannot give a permanent life eternal life he has seen that and the inherent nature of this condition life is suffering do you remember Supreme has taught if something is impermanent subject to change is it suffering or happiness suffering because always they are out of our control that means suffering what the second F doubt see he doesn't have any doubt with regard to the teachings of the Buddha with regard to the enlightenment of the Buddha he why he has unshakeable unfavor
confirmed confidence in the triple gym okay so no longer doubts then third fter he doesn't cling to any uh uh wrong practices uh wrong rights and rituals outside of the dispensation of the Buddha outside of the teaching of the Buddha there are many rights and rituals develop sadha shame of wrongdoing and fear of wrongdoing energy and wisdom he thinks oh they are very important qualities I also should develop them and that's coming coming to the surface and then uh he keeps practicing he knows the importance of this human life and the encountering with this teachings
of the Supreme Buddha he works very hard he gives priority to the dhma practice as a result with the total ending of the first three fs and with the attenuation or weakening okay weakening of passion anger and delusion he becomes a once returner he becomes a sakami want return who on returning only one more time to this world will make an End ending to suffering so remant will be born for maximum of seven lives so and never again destined for states of War another characteristic of noble uh stream entrant he will never go to a
bad world he has escaped from Bad worlds and where will he uh take rebirth for his rest of the seven lives in human world or Heavenly world so in the case of Saka disciple uh now first three FS are not seen in him and moreover the the roots of passion hatred and and delusion are weakened in him they are not completely eliminated but they are weaken because his Dharma practice uh has enabled him to subside them [Music] right having come uh only one more time to this world he will attain so his uh next life
will be his final life okay that is how an individual on coming to the surface heads across so now he uh he is swimming seeing the island right next person and how does an individual on coming to the surface going a gain a foothold he very close to the island is about to climb up the island there is the case where an individual comes to the surface that means uh now he has the association of kalas he has sadha fear of wrongdoing shame of wrongdoing he's very energetic he practices meditation frequently uh five hindrances are
weaken and some of them are abandoned completely he has developed wisdom to a very good uh degree with the total ending of the five laow FS he is due to be reborn in the [Music] aborts he is due to be reborn in the pure aborts there to be toally Unbound never again to return from that world who is this disciple anami disciple with the total ending of the five L of FS what are the five L of FS personality view is abandoned is Sak doubt is abandoned wrong practices are abandoned even sensual desire sensual lust
is abandoned like he doesn't have that uh desire to see beautiful things like the with regard to five senses that desire is no longer found in him hasn't he practiced the Dharma very well yes he has seen the meaningless nature of sensual Pleasures enjoyments entertainments sensual desire is abandoned one more anger is abandoned anger ill will is noral or Rising no one can arouse anger in that person so even a lay person can achieve that stage Su has encouraged Le people to be non- returners anagami means non returners In This Very life that is how
and uh where will he be born in the pure abort sudha in the Brahma World okay is uh uh not reborn in Heavenly World human world but uh in the Brahma World there are five Brahma worlds these five worlds are called sudha P they sud sud he will be born in one of these Brahma worlds or uh some anagami are born in uh they they dwell in many of these Brahma worlds and anyway that becomes their final life that is how an individual on coming to the surface gains a foothold about to liberate right that
means about to uh get on the island okay last person who is the last person seventh person yes Su explains and how does an individual on coming to the surface cross over reach the far Shore stand on High Ground AB brah [Music] in the sense uh of an arant Supreme uses that word for AR brah true true Brahmin who is free from defilements there is the case where an individual comes to the surface see now everybody should come to the surface first one should understand the importance of sadha Shame of wrongdoing Fe fear of wrongdoing
energy and wisdom PA with the ending of the uh so he has eradicated tains and he's free of tains uh tains of what is the first Tain first kind of Tain K Tain of sensual desire Bas tains of existence a taint of ignorance so he has eradicated all the taints he has developed sering meditation and Jas that isti PTI means he has developed wisdom the realization of the Four Noble Truths uh having directly and realized them for himself right in the here and now he has achieved Liberation now he is on the island that means
he's uh achieved the secure place that is how an individual on coming to the surface crosses over reaches the far show stands on High Ground a brahi these are the seven types of individual to be found existing in the world isn't that so excellent yes so do you remember those five qualities which help for the entering for the continuation and for the growth confidence shame of wrongdoing fear of wrongdoing energy and wisdom in s PA so may all of us have the opportunity to cultivate these wholesome qualities without losing them uh and may all of
us achieve the culmination of these good wholesome qualities in order to achieve this secure safe uh uh state of arahan ship in this gut Buddha dispensation sadu sadu sadu bu [Music] oh [Music] [Music]
