and it really helped me build my skills and here's something I want you to try when you hear someone speak try to repeat their words it doesn't matter if you make mistakes mistakes are part of the learning process I remember repeating phrases like excuse me where is the bathroom over and over until I felt comfortable saying them in real life situations it was so rewarding when People understood me now you might be thinking that sounds easy for You Blake but it's hard for me trust me I've been there everyone starts somewhere and I understand how
difficult it can feel at the beginning but the key is consistency the more you listen and practice the more confident you'll become in today's episode you will learn how to listen to Basics conversations and understand them more Easily how to use Simple phrases in your daily life how to improve your speaking skills through practice how repetition can make you more comfortable speaking English as you continue to listen to this episode remember practice makes progress you'll hear some real stories and I encourage you to repeat the sentences you hear out loud don't be shy the more
you practice the better you'll get I know that that it can sometimes be hard to understand everything especially If you're um just starting to learn but don't worry we're here to help you're not alone in this journey together we can improve your listening and speaking skills one conversation at a time let's get started all right let's dive deeper into today's Topic in this episode we'll continue practicing English listening and speaking by exploring more real life situations these are situations you'll probably face in your everyday life and by listening to them you'll understand How English is
used in natural conversations I want you to imagine something for a moment let's say you're at a coffee shop and you want to order your favorite drink the Barista asks what can I get for you today it's a simple question but maybe you're nervous about how to respond well let's go through it step by step when you hear someone say what can I get for you today it might sound fast but it's actually a very common and Friendly question if you understand the words you'll be able to reply confidently you might say I'll have a
coffee please or can I get a latte these are both both polite and simple ways to respond when I first started practicing speaking English I had trouble with phrases like can I get or what can I get for you because they felt too casual and I thought I might sound unprofessional but after a while I realized that these are the exact kinds Of phrases used by people in everyday situations it's important to use natural sounding language not just formal textbook English and that's what we're focusing on today let me share another example with you a
few years ago I was living in a different country and I had to visit the post office to send a letter I was nervous about understanding what the postal worker would say to me he asked how can I help you today this is a very common question but it's also A little different from what can I do for you which is something you might hear more often in movies or books at first I didn't know how to respond but after practicing a little I knew exactly what to say I'd like to send this letter please
it's simple it's polite and it's what I would say in that situation now so when you're learning English it's helpful to think about what you might say in real life situations like this one think about how often you find Yourself at a store or in a restaurant you might hear questions like what would you like to eat today or how are you paying today these are simple but important phrases and understanding them will help you feel more confident when you're out in public here's a tip when you're listening to someone speaking try to listen for
these short everyday phrases they're the ones people use most often you can practice by repeating what you hear like I'd like to buy a sandwich Or I'm paying with a credit card saying these phrases out loud will help you get used to the Rhythm and flow of the language one mistake I made early on was thinking that English speakers always used perfect grammar and formal language in every situation but that's not true at all in everyday conversations we use lots of shortcuts and informal phrases like what's up or how's it going these are all perfectly
fine ways to speak with friends and even People you don't know well for example a few months ago I met someone at a party and instead of saying hello how are you today I said hey how's it going we both laughed and it felt much more relaxed than a formal greeting I was nervous at first but it worked out great because it helped me sound more natural in the conversation that's what I want for you too I want you to be able to use these phrases in your own conversations practice makes perfect the More you
practice listening and speaking in real life situations the more natural it will feel you don't need to memorize long lists of vocabulary words instead learn to recognize phrases that people use every day another example comes from a time when I was traveling I was at the airport and the staff member asked do you have a boarding pass I didn't understand the word boarding pass at first so I asked them to repeat it they Said your ticket to get on the plane that made more sense right the key to understanding these phrases is not just listening
to the words but understanding what they mean in Context if you don't understand a word as we go through this episode I want you to practice saying these simple but important phrases along with me if you're listening in the car or at home repeat what you hear even if you're just starting repeating what you you here will help you get Better think about how you would introduce yourself in English maybe you're at a party and someone asks so where are you from you might answer I'm from New York or I live in London it's short
it's simple and it's a great way to start a conversation but what if someone asks what do you do for a living you could say I'm a teacher or I work in an office it's helpful to have a few simple responses ready for these common questions these are all things you can Practice in your daily life as you listen to this episode think about how you can use these phrases the next time you're in a similar situation and remember don't be afraid to make mistakes every time you speak you you're getting better by the end
of this episode you'll have learned some of the most common questions and answers in everyday English conversations you'll be more prepared for things like ordering food talking to Strangers or even just saying hello in English when I first started learning English I struggled with simple things like ordering food at a restaurant but the more I practice listening to conversations the easier it became now I feel comfortable talking to anyone in English even when they speak quickly or use slang so take your time and practice every day keep listening to real life conversations and remember practice
makes progress every step you take will Bring you closer to feeling confident when speaking English let's continue practicing some more phrases together let's dive even deeper into the world of everyday English focusing on listening and speaking skills this time we'll break down some real life scenarios and add in more examples that you can use immediately by the end of this section you'll feel more confident using English in your day-to-day life think about a Typical day for you you wake up maybe you have breakfast and then you get ready to to head out maybe you stop
by a shop to grab something on the way you walk up to the counter and the cashier asks Hi how are you today it's a friendly simple question but how do you respond you could say I'm good thanks how about you or I'm doing great thank you it's a polite natural response in English people often use these questions not just to ask how you're doing But as a way to start a conversation one thing I've noticed especially when I first started practicing English is how these small questions play a big role in keeping conversations going
for example let's say you're at the store and the cashier asks how your day is going in your own language you might not always ask that question when you're making small talk but in English it's very common it shows interest in The other person and can make the conversation flow more naturally a few years ago I visited a cafe and had a conversation with the Barista that I still remember today she said what can I get for you today it was a simple question but because I was nervous I wasn't sure how to respond I
wanted to sound polite and friendly after thinking for a second I said can I have a cappuccino please and smiled she smiled back and replied sure anything Else I was relieved and from then on I felt more comfortable ordering drinks in English this experience taught me that it's okay to feel nervous at first even if you don't no exactly what to say just trying is a huge step forward in everyday day conversations people are generally kind and willing to help when you practice listening and speaking you begin to feel more confident in these situations now
let's think about another common situation when you're at a Restaurant imagine you're sitting at a table and the waiter approaches Chase might say hi how's everything going so far how do you respond you can say something like everything's great thank you or it's been wonderful thanks in this case you're not just answering the question but you're also using it as an opportunity to make the conversation more friendly the more you practice these phrases the more natural they'll Sound when you use them in real life another situation that comes up often is when you're meeting someone
new this could be at work at school or at a party the question where are you from comes up all the time you can answer with something simple like I'm from Brazil or I live in Mexico it's an easy way to share a little bit about yourself and it opens the door for the other person to share their story too I want to share a quick Story from my own life that might help you see how simple questions can lead to meaningful conversations a couple of years ago I was traveling to a new city I
was walking around feeling a little lost when a friendly local came up to me and asked are you okay can I help you with directions I was surprised by how kind they were they didn't just assume I was lost but they showed real interest in helping I told them where I needed to go And they gave me directions adding it's a nice place you should stop by if you get the chance I was touched by the kindness and learned that a simple question can make someone feel at ease especially in a new or unfamiliar place
when you're listening to these everyday phrases and practicing them you're preparing yourself for situations just like the one I experienced in that City learning these questions and responses will make you feel more Confident when you meet new people or visit new places let's keep practicing with a few more examples imagine you're at the airport the person at the check encounter asks do you have your passport ready this is a simple straightforward question but it can be stressful if you're not sure how to answer the best way to respond is yes here it is while showing
your passport it's a short clear answer that's easy to say but notice how I didn't just say yes I added here it is to make it more specific and clear in English adding small details like this can make your response sound more natural now think about a situation where you're on the phone imagine you've called the company for customer service and the representative asks how can I help you today you can respond with I'm calling about an issue with my order or I need help with my account these responses show Exactly what you need making
the conversation smoother and more efficient the more you practice listening to these types of questions the easier it becomes to know exactly what to say here's something that helped me when I was learning English I paid attention to how people spoke in real life situations I didn't just focus on perfect grammar I focused on how English speakers used short casual phrases in their daily conversations phrases like how's it Going what's up and can I help you with anything might seem casual but they're very common you'll hear them everywhere and once you know them you'll feel
more comfortable responding naturally when I first started learning English I was always nervous about making mistakes but over time I realized that making mistakes is part of learning if you say something wrong don't worry people will understand you and appreciate your effort I've had many moments where I Didn't get the words quite right but people always smiled and helped me out that's the beauty of learning a language it's okay to make mistakes and you'll learn from them as you listen to more real life examples and practice your speaking remember that the goal is to sound
natural and confident don't stress over perfect pronunciation or grammar what matters most is that you're making an effort to communicate and with every Conversation you'll get better so what are some other situations where you could use the phrases you've learned today maybe you're at the grocery store and the cashier asks did you find everything you need you can say yes thank you or I'm still looking for the bread it's a simple response but it keeps the conversation flowing and helps you practice using English in a real situation the more you expose yourself to these kinds
of interactions the more Comfortable you'll feel using them practice with a friend or listen to English conversations whenever you can this way you'll start hearing these phrases more often and they'll start to feel like second nature by practicing these everyday conversations you're building the foundation for speaking confidently in English whether you're ordering food shopping or talking to a new friend these simple phrases will help you communicate more easily and Naturally keep listening keep practicing and remember that every conversation is an opportunity to learn and improve now let's move on and practice some more phrases you're
doing great so far keep going let's continue to explore more everyday situations and dive deeper into how you can use English with confidence in this part we're going to look at even more practical conversations that happen every day and I'll give you some personal stories to Make them feel more real and relatable let's start with something simple asking for help if you're in a store and you can't find what you need you might ask excuse me could you help me find the milk or do you have any apples left in English these are polite and
direct ways to ask for help when I first moved to a new city I had to ask for directions all the time I remember one day I was trying to find a bookstore but I had no idea where it was I went Into a cafe nearby and asked the Barista excuse me do you know where the nearest bookstore is she smiled and said it's just around the Corner down the street to the left simple and helpful this kind of exchange happens all the time in everyday life and the more you practice it the more natural
it will feel when you need to ask for help asking for help might seem like something small but it's actually one of the most useful things you can learn in A new language if you're ever unsure about something don't be afraid to ask English speakers are usually more than happy to help and people appreciate it when you try your best to communicate in their language for example a few months ago I was traveling in a foreign country and I needed to ask someone for directions I approached a man on the street and asked excuse me
can you tell me how to get to the museum he gave me clear directions and even added it's a Beautiful place I hope you enjoy it that was a small but meaning meaningful conversation that helped me find my way and I learned more about the city in the process another everyday situation is making small talk small talk is what happens when you start a conversation with someone you don't know well usually with a simple question or comment in English some common phrases for small talk are how's the weather today or have you been busy lately
the these are Simple questions but they help start a conversation and show that you're interested in what the other person is doing I remember the first time I tried small talk in English I was sitting in a park when a woman next to me said nice weather isn't it at first I was a little surprised but then I answered yes it's beautiful today after that we had a short conversation about the weather our plans for the day and other small topics it was a simple exchange but it felt Really good to use English in a
natural way one of the biggest challenges when learning a language is trying to understand people when they speak quickly when I was learning English I found it difficult to follow conversations when people spoke fast but over time I realized that people often use certain phrases or words to give clues about what they're saying for example when someone asks what's up they usually don't expect a detailed answer Instead of saying I'm just working on some projects you can simply respond with not much just relaxing it's a short and easy answer but it helps the conversation keep
going without feeling feeling awkward there's also something really important that I want to mention here it's okay to not understand everything sometimes people will use words you don't know and that's fine what matters most is that you're making The effort to listen and respond if you don't understand something you can always ask sorry could you say that again or I'm not sure I understand and can you explain it in fact I use these phrases all the time just last week I was having a conversation with a colleague and she said something I didn't catch I
didn't hesitate to say sorry could you repeat that and she was more than happy to explain it again this shows that it's not about being perfect But about trying your best to understand and communicate let's take another example going to a doctor's appointment you might need to tell the doctor about how you're feeling you can say something like I have a headache or I feel tired all the time it's important to know these phrases because they help you explain what's going on I had to visit a doctor last year and I remember feeling nervous about
explaining my Symptoms but when the doctor asked how have you been feeling I was able to respond clearly with I've been feeling a little dizzy and tired the doctor understood me right away and helped me feel better it was a reminder that simple phrases like this can make a big difference in real life situations another everyday scenario is at the airport imagine you've just landed in a new country and you're going through Customs the officer might ask what's the purpose of your visit this can sound intimidating at first but it's just a simple question you
can answer I'm here for vacation or I'm visiting family knowing how to answer these questions is crucial and it helps you feel more comfortable when traveling I remember when I went through customs for the first time the officer asked me about my trip and I nervously replied I'm here for Vacation he smiled and wished me a pleasant stay and I felt relieved this experience reminded me that even in more formal situations clear and simple answers are key you see the goal is to feel comfortable with these simple but essential conversations when you hear these phrases
often and practice them they start to feel natural imagine you're in a coffee shop and the Barista asks what size would you like you might say I'll have a medium coffee please these types of questions and answers are part of everyday life and learning them will make you feel more confident when you're speaking English the beauty of learning English through these real life examples is that you're practicing English that's actually used by speakers these aren't just textbook phrases these are the things people say when they're ordering Food meeting someone new or simply asking for help
the more you practice these common phrases the easier it will be to use them in your own life and the best part is that you don't need to know everything about grammar or vocabulary to have a simple successful conversation in English so so what can you take away from all of this start using these everyday phrases in your own life whether you're out shopping visiting a doctor or even making small talk with a Friend by practicing these basic conversations you're not only improving your listening and speaking skills but you're also getting more comfortable using English
in real situations remember learning English English isn't about being perfect it's about making progress every day and being confident enough to communicate keep practicing keep listening and before you know it speaking English will feel as natural as having a conversation In your own language let's continue practicing these situations in the next part you're doing great and every time you speak English you're getting one step closer to fluency keep it up let's continue expanding on these real life situations so you can get even more practice with English listening and speaking as we dive into more scenarios
I'll share personal stories to make them feel as realistic as possible and help you connect with the language in a Deeper way let's begin with something that happens almost every day making a phone call it might sound simple but phone calls can sometimes feel tricky especially when you don't know exactly what to say imagine you need to call a restaurant to make a reservation you might say something like hi I'd like to make a reservation for 2 at 7:00 p.m. tonight please sounds simple right but when I first started speaking English I remember feeling a
bit nervous about Phone calls I wasn't sure what phrases were polite or how to ask questions one time I called a restaurant to make a reservation and the person on the other end of the line asked can I have your name please I paused for a moment because I didn't know if I should say my full name or just my first name I decided to keep it simple and said Blake the person then said okay Blake you're all set for 700 p.m. the conversation ended there but it felt like a victory Because I had used
English to accomplish something important it reminded me that even the simplest conversations can be a huge step forward another situation that's common is meeting new people and introducing yourself have you ever walked into a room where you don't know anyone it can be a bit intimidating but knowing how to introduce yourself in English makes the experience much smoother a simple Introduction might go like this hi my name is Blake I'm from the United States it's nice to meet you it's short but it tells the other person who you are and opens up the door for
further conversation one time at a work event I had to introduce myself to a group of people at first I was worried I'd forget what to say but I kept it simple hi I'm Blake I just moved to this city and I'm excited to meet everyone the group immediately responded with welcome to The city and we started talking about the best places to visit even if you're nervous at first these kinds of introductions are a great way to start a conversation let's talk about ordering food at a restaurant which is another everyday situation where you
can practice English when you sit down at a restaurant the server might ask what would you like to order or can I get you something to drink these are simple questions but if you're new to English They might feel a bit overwhelming I remember my first time ordering food in English at a cafe I was unsure whether I should ask for a recommendation or simply choose something from the menu I decid decided to keep it simple and said I'll have the chicken sandwich and a coffee please the waiter smiled and said great choice it was
a small interaction but it made me feel more confident in using English in a real life setting these are the kinds of conversations That help you become more comfortable speaking English let's take it one step further imagine you're in a store and you need to ask about the price of something you might say how much is this shirt or is this on sale these are questions that will help you understand pricing and sales when you're shopping I remember a time when I was shopping for a jacket and I wasn't sure about the price I asked
the cashier how much is this Jacket and they told me it's $50 but it's on sale for $30 I was so reled believed because I understood everything clearly these are the everyday types of interactions you'll have when you need to buy things or get information in English another great situation for practice is asking for directions maybe you're walking down the street and you need to find a particular store or location you could say excuse me where's the nearest bus stop shop or how do I Get to the library I remember once being lost in a
new city trying to find the train station I stopped a woman on the street and asked excuse me can you tell me how to get to the train station she responded kindly and said it's just two blocks down this road you can't miss it I was so grateful that she took the time to help me asking for dire is something that can happen anytime and practicing these phrases will help you feel more confident and ready to Navigate new places now let's talk about something else that happens a lot talking about the weather it might sound
like a small topic but it's one of the most common ways to start a conversation it looks like it's going to rain today or it's really hot out isn't it these are simple ways to connect with others I was at the park last weekend when I overheard two people talking about the weather one person said wow It's so hot today I wasn't expecting this the other person agreed yeah me neither it's been pretty cold all week even though it wasn't a deep conversation it was an example of how the weather can bring people together and
get a conversation started in fact I've noticed that the weather is a great Icebreaker when meeting new people whether you're meeting someone in a coffee shop or on a hike talking about the weather is a Universal topic that everyone can relate to sometimes you might also find yourself at a social Gathering or party in these situations small talk can help break the ice you can ask questions like how do you know the h post or what do you do for work these questions help you learn more about the other person and they also give you
a chance to talk about yourself a few months ago I was at a friend's birthday party and I was a Little shy at first but once I started asking people about their jobs everyone opened up and the conversation flowed easily one person told me I work as a teacher and I responded that sounds interesting what age group do you teach this simple exchange led to a longer conversation and before I knew it I was chatting with people I had just met so don't be afraid to ask questions and keep the conversation going let's look at
a situation that's not as common but Still important talking to someone about their health it could be a friend telling you I've been feeling a little sick lately lately or I hurt my back while working out in these moments it's important to show concern and respond with something like I hope you feel better soon or what happened do you need any help a few weeks ago my friend told me that they weren't feeling well so I said oh no I hope you feel better soon do you want me to bring you some soup Even simple
phrases like this show that you care and are willing to help these are just a few examples of how English can be used in everyday situations whether you're talking to a stranger a friend or even a colleague these conversations will help you practice your speaking and listening skills remember the more you practice these everyday situations the more confident you'll feel when it comes time to have a real conversation in English If you you keep using these phrases and practicing these situations you'll improve your speaking and listening skills every day the key is to stay consistent
and never stop practicing it might seem challenging at first but soon you'll feel comfortable using English in these everyday settings stay tuned as we continue exploring more real life examples in the next part of this episode you're doing an amazing job and every step you take brings you closer to Mastering English keep it up let's keep going and dive into even more real life scenarios that will help you improve your English skills by now I hope you're starting to see how useful these everyday situations can be for practicing your listening and speaking abilities the more
real life conversations you engage in the easier it becomes to understand and respond naturally in English let's talk about something many of us do regularly going To the doctor when you're sick or need a checkup speaking English at the doctor's office is important let's say you need to describe symptoms to the doctor you might say I have a headache or I feel really tired all the time the doctor might ask how long have you been feeling this way or are you taking any medicine these simple questions can help the doctor understand your condition better and
provide the care you need I Remember when I had to visit the doctor for a cold once and I felt nervous about speaking English I kept thinking what if I can't explain my symptoms correctly but when the doctor asked me what's bothering you today I was able to say I have a sore throat and a cough the doctor understood me right away and was able to give me medicine to help me feel better even though it felt a bit uncomfortable at first it was a reminder That speaking English in these situations doesn't have to be
scary speaking of Health let's talk about something else we all experience getting food at a grocery store whether you're shopping for your weekly groc groceries or picking up something quick it's important to know how to ask for help if you can't find what you need for example if you're looking for Rice you could ask excuse me where is the rice aisle or can you tell me where the vegetables are Once I couldn't find the bread section in a new store so I asked excuse me where is the bread the staff member smiled and pointed me
in the right direction it was a simple exchange but it helped me feel more confident navigating the store even asking for something like a shopping cart or bag can be helpful in these situations the key here is to use Simple clear language that gets the message Across now let's talk about traveling whether you're going on vacation or traveling for work using English while traveling is something you'll like need to do when you're at the airport or train station there are often signs in English but it can also be helpful to know how to ask for
help when you're lost or need more information for example if you need to find the checkin counter at the airport you could ask where is the check-in for flight 213 or Can you tell me where the gate is for this flight I remember when I was traveling to a new city and I wasn't sure how to get to my hotel from the airport I went to the information desk and asked how can I get to the city center the person at the desk gave me directions and I was able to find my way without any
problems if you ever feel lost don't hesitate to ask someone for help most people will be happy to assist you and it's a great way to practice Your English while making sure you get to where you need to go let's take a moment to talk about another important situation making plans with friends if you're trying to make plans for the weekend it's helpful to know how to ask someone what they're doing for instance you might say what are you doing this Saturday or do you want to grab coffee later once a friend of mine asked
if I wanted to go hiking with him over the weekend I replied sure that sounds great What time should we meet we talked about it for a while and decided to meet at 10: a.m. it was a simple conversation but it showed me how easy it is to use English to make plans and connect with others speaking of plans it's also common to discuss events like concerts or parties if you're invited to an event you might ask questions like what time does the concert start or where is the event taking place let's say your friend
invites you to a party you might respond By saying I'd love to come what should I bring or do you need me to bring anything asking these questions not only helps you get the details but also shows your interest in the event a few weeks ago I was invited to a birthday party and I wasn't sure what to bring I asked the host should I bring a gift or is there something else I can contribute the host told me to just bring myself and that my presence was the most important these Kinds of exchanges are
perfect for practicing English as they help you engage in everyday social situations let's now talk about something many of us have to do dealing with customer service this could happen in a store on the phone or even even online when you have a question or a problem it's important to know how to ask for help for instance if you're in a store and you can't find something you could say can you help me find this item Or do you have this in a different size I remember going to a clothing store looking for a jacket
and I wasn't sure if they had my size I asked the employee do you have this jacket in a medium size and they checked the dock for me I was able to find what I needed and the staff made the experience easy and pleasant the same goes for when you're calling customer service you might need to explain an issue you're having like I received the wrong item or I have a Question about my order the key here is to stay calm and polite while using clear and simple language the more you practice these situations the
better better you'll get at handling customer service interactions in English in a similar way knowing how to give and receive compliments is an important skill giving a compliment can help you build rapport with others and receiving compliments is a great way to practice your response for example if someone Says I love your shoes you could respond with thank you I just got them or if you're the one giving the compliment you might say you look great today and the person will likely respond with thanks I feel good today I remember one time I complimented a
colleague on her new haircut I said your hair looks amazing and she responded with thanks I just got it cut Compliments are small but they make a big difference in creating positive interactions with others Let's not forget about social media these days a lot of communication happens online whether it's through Facebook Instagram or other platforms it's important to know how to ask questions and respond to people online for example if you see a friend post a photo from their vacation you might comment where did you go it looks beautiful or that looks amazing I want
to go there too social media has made it easier to connect with people And practice English in an informal setting I remember once asking a friend online what app do you use to edit your photos and they replied I used this app called vsso it was a great way to learn something new while practicing English at the same time as you can see English is something you use every day in all sorts of situations whether you're asking for help in a store making plans with a Friend or even complimenting someone each of these moments gives
you the chance to practice listening and speaking it's all about feeling confident and comfortable using English in real world situations the more you practice the easier it will become these simple interactions might seem small but they add up to a huge Improvement in your English skills keep using these phrases and situations and soon enough you'll find That speaking English is second nature to you let's continue and dive even deeper into real life situations where English is important the more you practice with these everyday conversations the more natural it will feel to speak English in a
