hey guys one of the things that I find a little bit confusing in English that there are certain words that are pronounced in the same way they have different meanings and there is a second group of words that are spelled in the same way but they are pronounced in different ways and those words have different meanings depending on the way you pronounce them isn't that confusing welcome to the process of learning English you learn a word you'll 100 sure you know its meaning and then you hear it in a conversation and the sentence just doesn't
make sense because that word happens to have another meaning and it is very helpful to learn all of the common meanings of widely used words in English today we're going to talk about two groups of words the first group is called homonyms you don't have to remember this word but just understand that these are words that are pronounced in the same way but they have different meanings and another group is heteronyms heteronyms are spelled the same but they're pronounced differently and have different meanings let's start the first word in the first group is fair it
has more than two different meanings and it's a very common word so please make sure you listen carefully meaning number one an outdoor area with entertainment the Town Fair is this weekend are you coming I live in California and we have a lot of fairs here man I love street fairs Fair also means a reasonable and acceptable let's look at an example ten dollars is a fair price for this mug and it would be fair to say that you find insane people sane for the purposes of trial Fair also means just or according to the
rules the company representative file an appeal because they found the Court ruling wasn't fair now the law states that every person deserves a fair trial Fair also means to describe light skin or hair she had very fair hair my skin is fair especially in winter when I don't get my tan you have such beautiful fair skin now the next word you know it 100 as a noun a book there you go this is a book but you can also use it as a verb to book and to book means to make a reservation and one
thing I wanted to pay your attention to when I came to the US I used to say book rounding my lips book and then one of my American friends told me that it's actually book so you're kind of smiling here it's a book it's book book book you live and you learn your book The River Cruise and you can't swim the next word is change you all know it as a verb to change means to become different this individual helped change the way we understand how the human heart Works forever but also change is the
money that you get back when you paid for something more money than it costs a very common phrase is keep the change when you're buying something out of for example I do that at a farmer's market I go to the farmer's market every Sunday and uh when the farmer says it's going to be 17 I give them twenty dollars and say keep the change this is my way of showing appreciation for their work oh sure here's your change ship a ship means a large boat no one not even the supply ship's Captain has ever seen
how amazing our little island really is to ship means to send some things in a package and a parcel we ship our orders on Friday ships and boxes as well these days to ship has another meaning which is becoming very common in slang the slang meaning of a verb to ship means to take an interest in or hope for romantic relationship between fictional characters or famous people whether or not they're a man's actually exists let's look at an example I am shipping for those guys they would make a great couple so I'm hoping for these
two guys to have a romantic relationship because I personally think they're gonna make a great couple and I found this article in BuzzFeed where they use this verb to ship in a fun way 22 on-screen couples that people ship to the moon and back to the moon and back means a lot so people strongly believe that these two people have to be together God they're a great couple yeah God I ship them so hard and the last word in this group that I wanted to wrap up with is the word date to date means to
have a romantic relationship I can date she can date and a date is a particular day of the month no problem uh I'll just look for a delivery date then now let's move to the second group which is a really fun group heteronyms you spell the words in the same way but you pronounce them in a different way and the way you figure out the way to pronounce them in a certain situation is by looking at the context let's look at the word content so content or content if the stress is on the first syllable
content that means the subject of a book the subject of speech content of the book content of your essay is really thought provoking I'd like you to make your statement brief without political content of any kind but if you say content that's an adjective and that means satisfied happy content we will perfectly content with organizing a picnic in the park until it started raining I'm I'm very content with what I have digest versus digest digest means a short summary of information you can have a digest of a book to stay updated on the world I
read a weekly digest of the news balance architectural digest ended up in my box again digest on the other hand means to understand the information or to take in this article is too hard to digest it's full of chemistry terms and I have no idea what they mean let me have some time to digest this we also digest food in our stomach digest versus digest foods are digested faster object versus object an object is a thing that can be touched or felt reverse engineering is the process of disassembling an object to analyze its components and
understand its principles an object may also mean a reason a purpose of something the object of this Workshop is to help you improve several soft skills now remember the object of the game is to read the joke card and all the other players have to try not to laugh to object is used to express dislike or disapproval you object to something means you want to say no to something James and Tom object to my suggestion to implement a new business strategy we also hear it a lot in the courtroom if you watch those TV shows
like the suits they say your order I object which means I do not agree do they believe in Santa Claus I object your honor continuing with some criminal vocabulary here uh suspect versus suspect a suspect is someone who is thought to be guilty of a crime police have arrested a suspect in the bank robbery Grant rice has been arrested as a prime suspect to suspect means to have an idea or impression of something the doctors suspect that my grandma has cancer he was brilliant but as we became close he began to suspect that I wasn't
telling him everything so we've seen some heteronyms that differ by where the stress goes but heteronyms aren't all about word stress look at this word wind or wind wind is moving air the wind was so strong today that the schools canceled classes the branches had grown a little too long and they hit the window in the wind blew to wind means to turn something in Old castles staircases usually wind up to the top of towers let's wind the clocks back a year live or Alive to live means to be alive and uh or to have
a home in a particular place I live in Los Altos Hills imagine being able to tell Anna that you could give her the chance to live a normal life life means not recorded happening right now is this a live performance and my mom actually saw them live in concert and I wanted to wrap up this video with a third group of words that are called homophones these words are spelled differently they have different meanings but they are pronounced in the same way oh my God how confusing flower a flower flower of flower like seriously flour
is a part of a plant there's a flower shop on the first floor bring him some flowers and flower is a powder made of crushed wheat or almonds or coconut or rice whatever you prefer there's flour these are the flower broke back the flower bag broke wine or wine one or one wine is an alcoholic drink made from grapes sometimes it can also be non-alcoholic normally I would go home and have a glass of wine by myself but I didn't feel like being alone and wine means to complain about something let me give you an
example with this one children tend to whine about things when they're tired or hungry a mum of two here can't believe you're getting a graduate degree in Psychology sitting around looking at people whine about their problems all day great versus great great means very good that's great news looks like we got what we came for and to grade means to rub food against some kind of surface to cut it into small pieces we usually grate cheese on a grater could you please peel and Grate two carrots great the cheese Dad okay isn't that confusing oh
my God wait or wait to wait means to remain to stay wait I have something for you but weight is the amount something or someone weighs she's lost a lot of weight since I last saw her heavier than the weight of the world on your back thank you guys so much for watching this video up to the very end please subscribe to this channel if you want to have a resource for your language learning needs I highly recommend a workbook that I've created together with my company and teachers at lingua trip and please share this
