fasting is a powerful spiritual practice that draws us closer to God but it's also one that can make us a target for Spiritual attack if you've ever noticed that things seem to get more difficult when you start fasting or that Temptation suddenly seem stronger you're not alone and there's a good reason for that let's be real fasting is not just about skipping meals when you decide to fast you're stepping directly onto the front lines of spiritual Warfare you're not just making a sacrifice you're engaging in a battle think about it when Jesus fasted for 40
days and nights in the wilderness what happened the devil showed up he saw that Jesus was physically weakened and he tried to exploit that moment to tempt him Matthew 4:1-11 the enemy knew that fasting was making Jesus's Spirit stronger more attuned to God and more resistant to sin that's exactly why he tried to attack him during that time and the same thing happens to us when you fast you're not just drawing closer to God you're also putting yourself on the enemy's radar fasting weakens your flesh but strengthens your spirit and the enemy doesn't like that
he knows that fasting makes you more sensitive to God's voice more focused on spiritual matters and less distracted by the things of this world that's why during a fast you might find yourself facing more Temptations more distractions and more spiritual challenges than usual it's not a coincidence it's a direct response to the spiritual power that fasting unlocks in your life but here's the thing this isn't something to be afraid of it's something to be prepared for just like Jesus used scripture to counter every Temptation the devil threw at him you can take steps to protect
yourself and ensure your fast is as effective and spiritually powerful as possible fasting isn't just about enduring hunger it's about being ready for the spiritual battle that comes with it that's why preparation is key when you're spiritually prepared you can face those challenges headon and come out stronger on the other side so today I'm going to share with you four crucial things you should do before you start fasting these steps will help you guard yourself against the enemy's attacks and make sure your fast is as impactful as it can be whether you're fasting for guidance
breakthrough or simply to draw closer to God these preparations will set you up for Success so let's dive in and get you ready to make the most of this powerful spiritual discipline step one meditate on scripture before you even start your fast it's crucial to take time to meditate on scripture think of God's word as your spiritual fuel it's what will sustain you you guide you and protect you during the challenging moments of your fast when you meditate on scripture you're not just reading words on a page you're allowing God's truth to sink deep into
your heart and mind this is especially important because when you're fasting you're going to face Temptations and distractions the enemy knows you're trying to draw closer to God so he's going to do everything he can to throw you off course that's why it's so powerful to have scripture embedded in your heart remember when Jesus fasted in the wilderness for 40 days the devil came at him with all sorts of Temptations trying to exploit his physical weakness but Jesus didn't fall for it how did he respond with scripture every time the devil tried to tempt him
Jesus countered with the word of God Matthew 4:47 and 10 that's how powerful scripture is it's your strongest defense against the lies and schemes of the Enemy by meditating on God's word before your fast you're equipping yourself with the spiritual tools you need to resist those attacks and stay focused on the purpose of your fast meditating on scripture isn't just about defense though it's also about alignment when you fill your mind with God's word you're aligning your thoughts with his thoughts your desires with his desires this is especially important during fasting because the whole point
of fasting is to draw closer to God to seek his will and to hear his voice more clearly by grounding yourself in scripture you're tuning your spiritual ears to God's frequency you're positioning yourself to hear his voice more clearly during your fast because your mind is already saturated with his truth so before you begin your fast make it a priority to spend time in the word don't just skim through a few verses really meditate on them let them sink in maybe focus on passages that speak to the specific reasons you're fasting whether it's seeking guidance
needing strength or Desiring a deeper relationship with God the more you immerse yourself in scripture the more prepared you'll be to face whatever comes your way during the fast and not only will you be better equipped to resist the enemy's lies but you'll also be more attuned to the spiritual insights and Revelations that God wants to share with you during this sacred time step two pray for protection and guidance before you even think about starting your fast the very first thing you need to do is pray for protection and guidance fasting isn't just about physical
discipline it's a spiritual act and when you engage in it you're entering into spiritual territory the Bible tells us in Ephesians 6:1 to put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes that's not just a a nice idea it's a necessity when you fast you're actively seeking to draw closer to God and that's when the enemy is likely to ramp up his efforts to distract or discourage you by praying for protection you're acknowledging that you can't do this on your own you need God's strength and his
armor to guard you during this time praying for guidance is equally important because fasting isn't just about abstaining from food it's about seeking God's Direction in your life whether you're fasting for Clarity on a decision break through in a particular area or simply to grow closer to God you need his guidance to lead you through the process when you ask God for guidance you're opening yourself up to his will allowing him to direct your thoughts your prayers and your actions during the fast this is crucial because fasting without seeking God's guidance can easily become a
mere physical exercise rather than a deeply spiritual experience this prayer for protection and guidance isn't just a routine or a formality it's a deliberate Act of placing yourself under God's care you're essentially saying lord I can't do this on my own I need you to guide me to protect me and to strengthen me it's about surrendering your fast to God before it even begins recognizing that you need his help to navigate the spiritual challenges that will come your way this kind of prayer sets the tone for your fast reminding you that this isn't about your
strength or your willpower it's about relying on God every step of the way so before you start your fast take some time to really pray ask God to protect you from distractions Temptations and any attacks from the enemy pray for his guidance to lead you through the fast to reveal his will and to help you focus on the spiritual purpose behind your fast when you start with this kind to prayer you're not just preparing yourself mentally or physically you're preparing yourself spiritually placing your trust in God to carry you through and with his protection and
guidance you'll be ready to embark on your fast with confidence and peace knowing that you're not doing this alone step three prepare mentally and physically fasting isn't just a spiritual challenge it's also significant physical and mental under under taking to make the most of your fast and avoid unnecessary struggles it's essential to prepare yourself both mentally and physically let's be honest fasting can be tough the hunger the fatigue and even the irritability that can come from depriving your body of its usual sustenance are real challenges but here's the thing by preparing yourself in advance you
can mitigate these effects and stay focused on the spiritual purpose of your fast think of it like training for a marathon you wouldn't just wake up one day and decide to run 26 miles without any preparation the same goes for fasting easing into it by gradually reducing your food intake or cutting out certain types of food before you begin can help your body adjust and prevent it from going into shock when you start your fast but preparation isn't just about your body it's about your mind too fasting can bring about a range of emotions from
irritability due to hunger to feelings of vulnerability as you confront your spiritual weaknesses being mentally prepared means acknowledging that these challenges are part of the process and having a plan for how you'll deal with them for instance when those feelings of hunger or irritability arise instead of letting them derail your fast you could set aside extra time for prayer or meditation use those moments as opportunities to draw closer to God rather than distractions that pull you away from your purpose and let's not forget that the enemy often tries to exploit our physical and mental weaknesses
during a fast he knows that when our bodies are tired and our minds are strained we're more susceptible to Temptation and distraction that's why being prepared is so important know that you might face moments of weakness and have a plan in place for how you'll handle them maybe it's having a scripture verse ready to to meditate on when you're struggling or a prayer partner you can reach out to for support whatever it is being mentally and physically prepared can make all the difference in maintaining your focus and commitment throughout the fast so as you approach
your fast take the time to prepare both your body and your mind start by gradually cutting back on food so your body isn't in shock when you begin your fast mentally prepare yourself by setting clear intentions and strategies for handling the challenges you'll face by doing this you'll be better equipped to endure the physical and mental demands of fasting allowing you to stay focused on the spiritual growth that fasting is meant to Foster remember preparation isn't just a good idea it's essential for making your fast as impactful and spiritually enriching as possible step four anticipate
spiritual warfare when you decide to fast you're not just embarking on a spiritual journey you're also stepping into a battlefield it's important to anticipate that fasting often invites spiritual warfare the enemy doesn't want you to draw closer to God and he'll do everything he can to distract discourage or even derail your efforts but here's the key knowing that spiritual warfare is a possibility doesn't have to discourage you it should prepare you when you expect the challenges you can be proactive in guarding against them the Bible gives us clear guid guidance on this in James 4:7
which says submit yourselves then to God resist the devil and he will flee from you this verse is a powerful reminder that while the enemy may try to attack you have the authority through Christ to resist him spiritual warfare during a fast can take many forms Temptations negative thoughts unexpected challenges or even feelings of Doubt but by arming yourself with prayer scripture and spiritual support you can stand firm against these attacks prayer is your first line of defense before you start your fast ask God to protect you and strengthen you against any schemes the enemy
might try to use against you scripture is another powerful tool in resisting spiritual attacks just like Jesus used scripture to counter the devil's Temptations during his 40-day fast in the wilderness you can use the word of God to combat the lies and distractions the enemy throws your way have specific verses ready that you can turn to when you're feeling tempted or discouraged these could be verses that remind you of God's strength his faithfulness or his promises to be with you in times of struggle when you're armed with scripture you're not fighting these battles on your
own you're standing on the truth of God's word which is more powerful than than any attack the enemy can launch finally don't underestimate the importance of spiritual support surround yourself with people who can pray for you encourage you and hold you accountable during your fast whether it's a prayer group a mentor or a trusted friend having others who are aware of your fast and can offer support makes a huge difference remember you're not in this alone the enemy may try to isolate you but with the right support system in place you can resist his attacks
and stay focused on your fast by anticipating spiritual warfare and preparing for it you can approach your fast with confidence knowing that you're ready to face any challenge that comes your way and draw closer to God in the process fasting is a powerful tool for spiritual growth but it's also a time when you might be more vulnerable to the enemy's attacks by taking these four steps before you start your fast you'll be better prepared to face any challenges that come your way and ensure that your fast is as spiritually fruitful as possible thanks for joining
