up before we dive into this you got to do me a favor take a step back all right the city's got a way of gnawing at you making you tense and I can't have that in my office messes with the Ambiance you know so here's what you're going to do go outside let that cool night air hit you take a deep breath like the first drag of a cigarette let it fill your lungs and let all that tension just drift away we're about to take a little trip see back to a time when the city
was just as rough just as tough picture it New York in the 50s Shadows crawling up brick walls the neon lights flickering like they're winking at you and the scent of rain soaked Concrete in the air listen to the rumble of a distant Subway the clatter of footsteps on wet sidewalks lose yourself in the murmur of a late night jazz tune sneaking out from a smokey bar it's all there waiting for you to soak it in now when you're ready come back sit down and tell me exactly what happened Charlie Bennett slouched at his desk
the leather creaking beneath him as he leaned Back letting the darkness of his office settle around around him like an old familiar coat he was a broad shouldered man the kind who looked like he could take a punch and had probably taken more than a few his hair a messy mop of dark brown shot through with silver was overdue for a cut and his stubble had crossed the line into something rougher his suit once Sharp now hung loose on his frame the fabric rumpled and worn thin at the elbows as tired as the man wearing
it his hazel eyes were bloodshot ringed with shadows that told the story of too many sleepless nights and the cigarette tucked between his fingers was more Ash than tobacco the place was a dump just like like him paint peeling off the walls a ceiling fan that creaked more than its spun and the stale scent of cheap alcohol clinging to the air like a bad memory the blinds were half drawn letting in slivers of the city's neon glow but mostly they kept the world outside at Bay the frosted glass window of his door with pi Charlie
Bennett etched in fading letters was cracked hardly offering any privacy or protection the bottle of bourbon on his desk was more empty Than full but that didn't stop him from reaching for it as he tipped it back the phone rang loud and jarring in the quiet he let it go for a few rings considering whether he could be bothered but old habits die hard finally he picked up the receiver his voice a gravy rasp Bennett he muttered not expecting much from the other end Charlie it's Ry the voice was from a time before things went
to hell Ray Donovan a cop Charlie used to run with back in the day when he still still believed in things like right and wrong what do you want Charlie asked already regretting the conversation he rubbed his eyes trying to clear away the haze that had settled over him there's been a murder Charlie a real bad one Laura Sinclair Rich Dame found strangled in her upper easts side Penthouse you need to get there before the boys in blue Dew Upper East Side Charlie had no business being there but Ry had a way of making it
hard to say no with a grunt he hung up and dragged himself to his feet he grabbed his coat the fabric worn and threadbear at the edges and checked his revolver his old friend cold and reliable stepping out into the Night the city greeted him like an old adversary all flashing lights and distant Sirens he flagged down a cab the driver barely glancing his way before pulling over Charlie slid into the back seat the smell of stale cigarettes and something sour hitting him as he gave the driver the address as the cab pulled away from
the curb Charlie stared out the window watching the city Roll by the transition from the Seedy underbelly where he lived to the polished streets of the Upper East Side was Stark like flipping a switch the buildings grew taller cleaner their facades pristine under the street lights the sidewalk were lined with trees their leaves rustling softly in the breeze and the people who walked them were a world away from the drunks and low lives Charlie usually dealt with here it was all tailored suits glinting jewelry and the quiet hum of wealth when the cab pulled up
in front of the building Charlie couldn't help but let out a low whistle the place was a fortress of glass and steel with a Dorman standing guard like some kind of ceremonial Soldier the cabie glanced at Charlie in the rearview mirror a hint of Suspicion in his Eyes as if wondering what business a guy like him had in a place like this Charlie threw a few crumpled bills at him and stepped at out the cool air hitting him like a slap to the face inside the lobby was all marble and soft lighting with a chandelier
hanging overhead that looked like it cost more than Charlie would make in a lifetime he didn't belong here but then neither did death and it had found its way in just the same Charlie rode the elevator up the Silence of the ride only broken by The Faint hum of classical music playing through hidden speakers when the doors opened he stepped out into a hallway that was all polished wood and thick carpets the penthouse was at the end the door a jar a sign of the chaos that had likely erupted just hours before the penthouse itself
was something out of a magazine a place where everything was in its place and everything screamed money the furniture was Sleek modern the kind of stuff that people didn't really use just admired the walls were adorned with art that Charlie couldn't even begin to appreciate and the view through the floor to ceiling Windows was breathtaking a panoramic Display of the city's glittering Skyline but none of that mattered What mattered was the win stained carpet the dark red pooling under the body of Laura Sinclair like blood from a wound Charlie stepped closer his eyes narrowing as
he took in the scene Laura was sprawled out on the floor and a glass lay nearby empty the lipstick stained Rim A Silent Witness to the last moments of her life on the chair beside him a silk tie lay discarded like something out of a bad movie Charlie crouched down picking it up with gloved fingers it was smooth expensive a Bellamy silks a brand that catered to the kind of people who lived in places like this it wasn't the sort of thing you'd find just anywhere and that made it important he examined the body but
it didn't tell him anything he didn't already know Charlie continued to search the apartment taking his time with every detail a life lived in luxury now reduced to a crime Scene It wasn't until he rifled through a stack of magazines on the coffee table that he found something interesting a small leatherbound journal well-worn the pages filled with Neat delicate handwriting in the back folded between the pages was a letter lay low it read in flowing script soon we'll be out of here together like we always dreamed VH Charlie frowned turning the letter over in his
hands v h two initials that meant nothing to him but everything to someone else this was the first real clue but it raised more questions than it answered after some time spent searching Charlie had all he was going to get the penthouse had given up its Secrets but they were few and far between he stepped back into the hallway and lit a cigarette the smoke curled up into the ceiling and Charlie watched it dissipate just like the answers he was looking for he didn't have much but he had enough to know that this case was
going to drag him through the muck and the Upper East Side was just the beginning he needed to talk to someone someone who might have seen or heard something the building's residents were likely all well to do the kind who kept to themselves but in a place like this Secrets had a way of coming out he started with the neighbor directly across the hall the door was old and Heavy the kind that didn't open easily unless you were expected he knocked the sound echoing in the quiet hallway and waited after a moment the door creaked
open revealing a man who looked like he just rolled out of bed disheveled unshaven and with the distinct odor of booze clinging to him his shirt was rumpled hanging off him like it had given up trying to stay neat yeah the man slurred blinking blury at Charlie Charlie Bennett he said flashing his old agency card it wasn't good for much these days but it still carried some weight I'm looking into what happened to your neighbor Loris and CLA the man blinked again processing the information slowly you a cop not a cop Charlie replied keeping his
tone neutral just trying to get some answers the man leaned against the door frame running a hand through his greasy messy hair Laura shame really she was a looker that one Charlie resisted the urge to roll his eyes did you see or hear anything unusual in the last couple days the man shook his head then paused as if reconsidering well now that you mention it I did hear some noise late last night thought it was just the usual racket but then who Knows I was pretty out of it Charlie nodded sensing the man was telling
the truth or at least what he remembered of it anything else any visitors Maybe maybe the man squinted as if trying to bring the blurry details into Focus no can't say I did but there's been some weird stuff going on lately things going missing small bits and pieces maybe it's connected maybe not the drunk man shifted slightly trying to sound more credible if you buy me a bottle I might remember some more details Charlie raised an eyebrow waving the man off as he continued down the hall it wasn't much but it was something and something
was better than nothing the next door he knocked on opened almost immediately revealing a woman who looked like she been waiting for an excuse to talk to someone the woman who stood there was middle-aged with a face caked in too much makeup and a cigarette smoldering between her fingers her eyes were sharp taking in every detail of Charlie in a way that made him feel like he was being sized up her long nails drummed against the door frame who are you she asked her voice grally from years of smoking he introduced himself again and said
I'm looking into the murder of Laura Sinclair the woman's eyes widened slightly but she didn't seem surprised I knew it she muttered more to herself than to Charlie I knew something like this would happen this building's gone to the dogs Charlie folded his arms playing along what makes you say that the woman took a long drag from her cigarette exhaling a cloud of smoke that lingered between them this place used to be respectable you know but now it's all gone to Hell people coming and going at all hours strange men loitering around and don't get
me started on the thefts thefts Charlie asked remembering his earlier conversation with the drunkard oh yes she said nodding emphatically little things at first but now it's almost like someone's making a game of it I've lost two rings and a bracelet and the management hasn't done a damn thing about it Charlie nodded filing away the information it seemed the strange thefts were a pattern not just a coincidence did you know Laura Sinclair the woman Shrugged flicking Ash onto the floor not well she kept to herself mostly but she had money that much was clear always
dressed to the Nines and always sneaking back up here at dawn it's something Charlie said giving her a small nod of appreciation thanks as he turned to leave the woman called out hey you find out who's behind this you make sure they get what's coming to them all right this place used to be nice Charlie offered a half smile I'll do my best he was about to head back down when the sound of soft footsteps caught his attention he turned to see an older woman approaching him with a concerned look on her face she was
short and craned her neck up to look at him excuse me sir she said her voice trembling slightly with age you wouldn't happen to be a detective would you I'm not a cop if that's what you're after but what do you need he answered glancing at his watch wondering if he had the time to [Music] spare the woman grabbed his arm her grip surprisingly strong for her age and walked him back down the hallway as she spoke it's my cat Valentino he's gone missing a beautiful Persian white as snow he's not been around for a
couple days now and I'm worried Something's Happened to him Charlie sighed the last thing he needed was To go on a wild goose chase for some old broad for free but he had no concrete leads on the Sinclair case and he'd always had a soft spot for Animals Charlie followed her to her apartment it was richly decorated with plush carpets expensive furniture and an air of refinement that spoke to Old Money the cat's room as she called it was more lavish than most people's living quarters a plush cushion in the corner toys scattered about and
a small chandelier hanging from the ceiling predictably he couldn't find anything in the woman's apartment feeling stumped for the second time that night he decided he needed a breather as Charlie stepped onto the balcony for a smoke the city spread out below him him a sea of lights and distant noise his silver lighter clicked open its flame flaring briefly in the darkness before settling into a steady burn he brought the cigarette to his lips the end catching fire with a soft crackle as he took a drag it was then that he caught a whiff of
something odd something Something Fishy literally the smell was strong wafting up from below and it didn't belong in this Posh part of town Charlie leaned Over the railing scanning the street below a French restaurant a bit rundown compared to its surroundings was closing up for the night the owner a stocky man with a bushy mustache was stepping out the back door holding a bowl of something that looked like Pate Charlie watched as the man placed the bowl down by the steps and headed back inside a few moments later a fluffy white cat appeared drawn to
the smell Charlie couldn't help but Smile as he realized he'd found Valentino he made his way down to the alley and gently picked up the cat who purred contentedly as Charlie scratched behind his ears back in the old lady's apartment Charlie handed over the cat who immediately curled up on his plush cushion as if nothing had happened looks like Valentino's got a taste for the Finer Things Charlie said Dry watching the cat settle in the woman beamed Overjoyed to have her pet back thank you so much Mr Bennett would you care for a cup of
tea as a thank you Charlie declined politely Glancing around the room that's when he noticed something odd small items scattered around that seemed out of of place a fancy cigarette case a pair of cufflinks even a bracelet most of them match the descriptions of the items the neighbors had mentioned as missing Charlie smirked bending down to pet Valentino one last time so you're the little thief he murmured amused but his hand froze when he noticed the initials on the cigarette case LS Laura Sinclair He Slipped the case into his pocket his mind spinning like the
city at midnight the logo etched on its surface a blooming Black Dalia belonged to one of the hottest joints in town the kind of place where secrets were poured as freely as the drinks he finally had a lead a thread to pull on and maybe just maybe it would unravel the whole mess the night had wrapped its cold fingers around the city by the time Charlie Bennett trudged back to his office The Familiar Creek of the wooden floor greeted him as he pushed the door with the Frosted GL glass window open it wasn't much but
it was home or At least the closest thing he had to one he tossed his coat over the back of his chair and dropped the cigarette case onto the desk the black Daria Charlie had heard whispers about the place a nightclub that catered to the elite the type of people he didn't know much about and wanted to know even less Charlie knew he needed more information and there was only one person he trusted to help him get it he'd call Ry tomorrow but right now sleep had its hooks in him dragging him down into the
murky depth the couch groaned as he collapsed onto it the rough fabric SC scratching at his skin but it didn't matter his eyes shut and he was pulled into a Restless uneasy Dreamscape where the Shadows seemed to whisper Secrets he wasn't ready to hear Charlie woke with a start the sunlight streaming in through the cracked blinds cutting through the haze in his head he rubbed his eyes trying to shake off the remnants of sleep the clock on the wall ticked away quietly and he squinted at it trying to make out the time quarter past noon
he sat up slowly his muscles stiff from a night spent on the lumpy couch the Room was bathed in the harsh light of day making everything look even more rundown than it usually did he needed coffee badly but first he needed to make a call he dragged himself over to the desk and picked up the receiver dialing Ray Donovan's number the phone rang twice before Ry answered his voice rough from too many late nights on the job Charlie how'd it go Charlie leaned back in his chair lighting a cigarette The Familiar burn in his throat
was a welcome sensation something to Anchor him in the hear and now we need to talk there was a pause on the other end the kind that comes when someone's not sure they want to hear what's coming next you sound like hell feel like it too Charlie replied with a grim chuckle I've got a lead but I need some information meet me at Lucky's Diner in half an hour Ray sigh the sound of it crackling through the line yeah all right I'll be there Charlie hung up and took a moment to gather himself he wasn't
in any shape to be chasing down leads but he didn't have the luxury of waiting the city didn't stop just because he was tired and neither could he after splashing some water on his face In the small dingy bathroom at the back of the office Charlie grabbed his coat and headed out the streets were alive again people going about their business oblivious to the darkness that lurk just beneath the surface but Charlie saw it felt it in the way the Shadows clung to the corners in the way the city seemed to breathe with a life
of its own luy's Diner was a Haven of normaly in the city its chrome trim and neon sign giving it a certain ch charm that somehow managed to survive the city's Relentless March forward the familiar scent of frying bacon and coffee hit Charlie as soon as he pushed open the door the checkered floors were scuffed from years of footsteps and the red vinyl booths had seen better days but there was something comforting about the familiarity ity of it all it was busy filled with the lunchtime crowd office workers Blue Collar guys on break and the
occasional cop grabbing a quick bite Charlie spotted Ray in their usual Booth a cup of coffee already in front of him Ray Donovan was a big guy built like a linebacker with a square jaw and eyes that had seen too much his dark hair was streak with gray And there were new lines on his face that hadn't been there the last time they'd met he was a guy who still believed in some semblance of Honor in an institution that had long since lost its moral compass Charlie slid into the booth across from him nodding a
greeting as he picked up the menu the waitress a woman named Doris who'd been working at liy since forever came over with a pot of coffee what'll it be hun she asked her tone friendly but distracted by the lunchtime Rush coffee black Charlie said setting the menu aside and a piece of apple pie the waitress nodded and poured him a cup before heading off to another the table Charlie took a long sip letting the bitter liquid wake him up the rest of the way he pulled the cigarette case from his pocket and slid it across
the table to Ray found this in the Dame's neighbor's apartment Charlie said wrapping his hands around the warm mug the cat swiped it look at the Engraving Ry picked up the case his brow furrowing as he examined it the black Daria haven't heard that name in a while Charlie looked around then dropped his voice lower I need to know who runs the place what's going on there Rey set the case down his expression serious I've heard enough to know it's bad news the boy on the force look the other way don't like when the name's
brought up especially not without evidence Charlie nodded already suspecting as much Laura Sinclair was strangled with a silk tie Bellamy silks top tier stuff I need to know who she was involved with and who's behind this Doris walked over and SL slid the plate of apple pie in front of him setting it down Charlie dug in letting the sweet taste distract him if only for a moment Ry sighed rubbing a hand over his stubble jaw I know a guy Jimmy the rat Marone he's a lowlife informan but he's got his ear to the ground works
for some of the big players so if anyone knows what's going on it's him Charlie took another sip of his coffee letting the information sink in where can I find him Ray leaned in grabbing a fork full of pie despite Charlie's protest last I heard he was hanging around an Alleyway near the brass knuckle it's a dive bar on the edge of town Jimmy's not the type to talk easy and the people he's involved with don't like loose Ends Charlie finished off his meal and tossed a few bills onto the table I'll get him to
talk it was raining as they made their way through the city moving from the more respectable parts to the Shady underbelly where crime and Desperation lurked around every corner the Alleyways grew narrower the buildings more run down and the people they passed less inclined to make eye contact they kept their wallets close knowing full well that the streets here had a way of taking what wasn't nailed down the alley near the brass knuckle was a place where the city's filth collected a dark narrow stretch of pavement that smelled of garbage and something rotting the neon
lights flickered overhead bathing the cracked asphalt with an eerie sickly glow it was the kind of place that made your skin crawl and your hand itch for the gun tucked away in your coat as they moved deeper into the alley they passed a woman leaning against the wall wall her heavy makeup smeared and her clothes a little too tight she gave them a once over her lips curling into a suggestive smile Charlie shook his head preemptively pushing past the woman Shrugged Losing interest as they continued down the alley Ry led the way his eyes scanning
the shadows for any sign of their Target they found Jimmy the rat Marone at the far end hunched over in the middle of some shady deal the moment he saw them his eyes widened and he muttered a curse under his breath before making a break for it damn it Jimmy Ry shouted as they both took off after him the chase was short but intense their footsteps echoing off the brick walls as they closed in on him Jimmy was quick but fear made him sloppy he tripped over a pile of crates and before he could recover
Charlie and Ray were on him tackling him to the ground Charlie hauled Jimmy up by the collar shoving him against the wall the man wheezed his eyes darting around in panic I don't know nothing he protested his voice shaky Charlie's patience was already wearing thin that's funny considering I haven't even told you what I'm after now you're going to tell me about the black Daria who's running the place what goes on there I don't know Jimmy insisted trying to squirm free but Charlie wasn't in the mood for gamees he yanked him closer his fist connecting
with The man's gut Jimmy doubled over gasping for air cops ain't supposed to hit people for no reason Jimmy wheezed clutching his stomach good thing I'm not a cop Charlie growled delivering another punch Rey stood off to the side leaning against the alley wall and lighting a cigarette he watched the scene unfold with a calm Detachment the smoke from his cigarette curling up into the air eventually Jimmy broke his fear outweighing his loyalty all right there's dark [ __ ] going on at the club but I don't know who's behind it I'm just a small
fry you want to know more you got to talk to the working girls there they know the score better than anyone Jimmy laughed bitterly spitting out a bit of blood onto the ground but you're wasting your time they won't talk to anyone they don't know Charlie let go of Jimmy shoving him away in disgust get out of here before I change my mind Jimmy staggered back casting a hateful glance at Rey before turning and disappearing into the Shadows Ry took a long drag on his cigarette exhaling slowly as he watched Jimmy go well that was
enlightening Ry said Dry pushing off the wall and crushing His cigarette under his boot Charlie grunted in response his mind already working through the next steps the Black Dalia was starting to look more and more like the key to this whole mess and if he was going to get any real answers he'd have to dive into its depths whether he liked it or not he thanked Ry for the help and the two parted ways on a good note a rare occurrence in a city that had a way of turning friends into foes Charlie moved through
the city the night thick and oppressive like it was swallowing him whole steam curled up from the grates tendrils of it wrapping around his legs as if the streets themselves were alive reaching out to stop him the rain had left everything slick the pavement gleaming under the dim Street lights cars rumbled by their headlights cutting through the fog but they were just shapes Barely There part of the city's illusion the exterior of the Black Dalia was understated too understated the sort that didn't need to advertise what it was because the people who mattered already knew
slipped inside his coat pulled tight against the Chill in the air his senses immediately assaulted by the smell of cigars And expensive perfume the interior was a world apart from the outside plush decadent with low lighting that made everything feel just a little bit more dangerous he moved through the crowd inconspicuously it wasn't too too busy yet just a slow trickle of well-healed gentlemen and elegantly dressed ladies their laughter and conversation a soft murmur beneath the smooth jazz that drifted from the stage this was a place where money changed hands where deals were made with
a smile and a handshake and where the wrong question could get you into trouble faster than you could finish your drink Charlie approached the bar where a few of the girls were gathered their eyes flicking over him with casual dis he wasn't here to draw attention just to listen to see if anyone knew something they shouldn't one of the women caught his eye she stood out not because of her looks though she was beautiful but because of the way she carried herself Orban hair deep green eyes that had seen more than they should have and
an attitude that said she wasn't here to play nice evening Charlie said leaning on the bar his voice low and unassuming she looked over gracing Him with those green eyes briefly you don't look like the usual type we get in here first time he admitted offering a small smile figured I'd check the place out see what the fuss is about name's Charlie she studied him for a long moment seeing through his attempt then scoffed at him we don't talk to cops I'm not a cop Charlie said evenly just a man with a few questions her
eyes narrowed slightly but she didn't say anything more instead she turned away her Orban hair swaying as she walked off to join the other girls Charlie watched her go frustration and curiosity Goring at him she knew something he was sure of it but getting her to talk would take more than just a few smooth words he found a booth in the corner away from prying eyes and settled in lighting a cigarette as he watched the room the night was starting to pick up the club filling with the kind of people who had money to burn
and secrets to keep the band on stage began to play a new number and the lead singer a woman in her 30s with a voice like velvet stepped up to the microphone her eyes were half closed as she sang her voice sliding over the notes with a smoothness that Wrapped around the room Charlie leaned back letting the music wash over him as he observed the crowd the singer had a presence a way of drawing you in with every note every glance her voice was rich full of emotion that seemed to come from from some place
deep someplace real she was good way too good for a place like this but then that was the point wasn't it the best things always found their way to the worst places the song ended and the room erupted in polite Applause Charlie took a final drag from his cigarette the smoke curling up into the dim light as he stubbed it out in the ashtray he hadn't learned much but he hadn't expected to this place was a fortress and breaking in would take more than just one visit he was about to slip out try his luck
another night when a scream cut through the air it was sharp panicked and it sent a jolt of adrenaline through him the the club exploded into chaos and the girls who had been lounging near the stage were now running their faces pale with Fear Charlie was on his feet pushing through the crow his heart pounding in his chest the backstage area was a mess chairs overturned Makeup scattered across the floor but all of that faded when he saw her the singer lying crumpled in the corner of her dressing room her body was twisted her once
beautiful face contorted in a grotesque mask of pain and Terror and around her neck cutting into her skin was a silk tie Charlie knelt beside her his mind racing the tie was just like the one used on Laura Sinclair the same brand Bellamy silks two murders one night apart both with the same chilling signature this wasn't just a murder it was a message he rose to his feet scanning the room for anything that might give him a clue but there was nothing whoever had done this covered their tracks well he needed to get out of
out of here before the cops showed up and turned this place upside down Charlie slipped out the back he leaned against the wall trying to catch his breath trying to make sense of the madness that was unfolding around him he lit another cigarette the flame flickering in the darkness he was about to leave when he saw her the Orban haired woman from earlier she was standing a few feet away her face stre with tears her body trembling she looked up meeting his gaze And for a moment the world seemed to stand still I never did
get your name Charlie said his voice rough from the smoke and the tension she wiped at her eyes trying to steady herself well I never gave it to you Charlie took a step closer his tone softening you need to help me this thing it's bigger than just one girl we need to find out who's behind it she hesitated her eyes searching his face for something trust maybe or desperation why should I trust you she asked her voice barely above a whisper because I'm the only one who's going to do something about this you know the
cops don't care Charlie replied she looked away her fists clenched at her sides finally she nodded a resigned look in her eyes all right I'll help you Charlie offered her a small reassuring smile what's your name Effie Fontaine let's go back to my place and I'll tell you what I know it's not safe here she said trembling slightly in the night air the city was alive with the muted mystery of nighttime the kind of magic that seeped into your bones and made you feel like you were part of something bigger Charlie and Effie walked side
by side the streets of the city unfolding Before them like a map of Secrets the air was cool carrying with it the scents of the city gasoline street food the faint Tang of something metallic and unplaceable it was quieter now the daytime bustle replaced by the night crowd men in sharp suits heading to late night meetings women in Furs and silk their laughter drifting through the air like a melody here and there the occasional passer by gave them a curious glance but most people kept to themselves their minds on their own troubles Effie led the
way her Pace brisk her demeanor tense not far now she muttered mostly to herself Charlie nodded though she wasn't looking at him nice place Effie let out a humorous laugh not really but its home for now anyway they turned down a narrow side street the kind of street that most people wouldn't even notice if they weren't looking for it the buildings here were older more rundown with faded signs hanging above doorways and chipped paint on the walls a cat slunk by its eyes shining wearily as it disappeared into the Shadows Effie slowed as they approached
a brick building that had seen better days the fire escape clung to the side like a metal skeleton rusted in Places but still sturdy enough to climb she paused glancing up at the darkened Windows we're going up this way she said nodding towards the fire escape landlord's a creep and I'm behind on rent if he sees me coming in he'll find some excuse to try and talk to me Charlie raised an eyebrow but didn't argue lead the way Effie grabbed hold of the ladder her movements quick and practiced Charlie followed the metal creaking slightly under
their weight The Climb wasn't long just a couple of stories but by the time they reached the top Charlie could feel the burn in his muscles Effie pushed open a window climbing through into a small dimly lit apartment it was modest to say the least one room that served as a living area kitchen and bedroom with mismatched furniture and discarded boxes of takeout a single lamp cast a Golden Glow over everything making it feel almost Coy despite the obvious signs of neglect sorry about the mess Effie said brushing off some dust from a chair before
offering It to Charlie like I said it's not much he took the chair settling into it with a grateful sigh I'm in no position to complain my place makes this look like a fancy hotel suite Effie busied herself at a small counter pouring two drinks from a half empty bottle of whiskey I don't usually bring strangers home she said handing him a glass but you don't seem like the type who'd caused trouble Charlie took a sip the burn of the whiskey warming him from the inside out thanks Effie leaned against the counter her gaze distant
for a moment you want to know about the black Daria about what really goes on there Charlie nodded waiting for her to continue there's an underground Speak Easy at the club she began her voice steady but with an edge of bitterness it's where all the Real Deals happen gambling drugs you name it the people who run it they're not the type you cross lightly and the Man In Charge who whoever he is he's a ghost no one knows his name what he looks like nothing he works from the Shadows lets others do his Dirty Work
Charlie leaned forward running a hand through his unkempt hair in disbelief and the cops they just let it slide Effie's lips twisted into a grim smile there's a crooked cop on the payroll I've seen him counting his cash as he walks through the dressing rooms learing at The girls he's got them all scared no one wants to end up like viven viven Charlie repeated feeling a knot tighten in his chest the singer Effy nodded her eyes dropping to the floor Vivien Hayes she was one of the best hell half the regulars only came to catch
a glimpse of her she kept the place running kept the money flowing but she was tired you know she tried to quit a few times said she was done with the whole thing but every time she went downstairs to talk to the boss she'd come back crying she was seeing someone I think had that far off look in her eye sometimes but she wouldn't tell me who Charlie rubbed the back of his neck the exhaustion creeping in but he pushed it aside and now she's dead Effie took a long drink staring into the middle distance
as if she could see viven's face in the shadows for a moment neither of them spoke the silence hanging heavy between them Effie broke the silence first her voice softer now more vulnerable stay the night Charlie I don't I don't want to be alone Charlie looked at her seeing the fear and the weariness that she tried so hard to hide he nodded slowly I thought you didn't like cops Charlie teased trying To lighten the mood Effie's smile widened just a fraction a glimmer of something almost playful in her eyes I thought you said you weren't
a cop Charlie chuckled the sound low and dry you got me there the tension between them eased a little the shared burden of the night night making them feel like they were in this together for a moment the weight of the world seemed to lift just a bit and they both felt the faintest flicker of hope hope that maybe just maybe they could get through this Effie finished her drink and set the glass down moving toward the bed you can take the couch she said her voice already heavy with the pull of sleep it's not
much but it's better than the floor Charlie watched as she climbed into bed and pulled the thin blanket over her he waited until he was sure she was asleep then quietly Rose from the couch and made his way to the small kitchen the light above the sink flickered slightly as he leaned against the counter opening the fridge and pulling out a box of cold pizza the leftover slices were stiff and a bit dry but they do he grabbed a piece took a bite and let the Bland taste fill the empty spot in his stomach the
world Outside was silent now save for the occasional distant Rumble of a car passing by or the the faint echo of a siren far off in the city Charlie lit a cigarette taking a long drag as he chewed on the pizza the night had been a whirlwind but now in the quiet Solitude of Effie's tiny apartment he could start to piece it all together Laura Sinclair the initials on the letter Vivien Hayes the Black Dalia they were all connected he was sure of it Laura must have been a regular at the club drawn into the
underground Speak Easy where the stakes were high and the losses even higher gambling debts could pile up faster than the chips on the table and once you were in deep there was no getting out especially not when the man holding your debts had a strangle hold on half the city Charlie could picture it now Laura desperate and Corner trying to find a way out and then there was viven the two women must have crossed paths at the club perhaps even more than once they probably shared more than just a few drinks and Casual conversations maybe
they'd seen a kindred spirit in each other two women trapped in a web of lies and deceit each Looking for a way to escape it wasn't hard to imagine their friendship blossoming into something more viven was tired that much was clear from what Effie had told him maybe she and Laura had hatched a plan a plan to run away to escape the clutches of the man who had them both in a vice grip but something had gone wrong someone had found out and now they were both dead Charlie crushed the cigarette in the ashtray the
gears in his mind turning over the possibilities the man behind all of this the shadowy figure who ran the Speak Easy and pulled the strings from the darkness he was the key if he could get closer enough he could find out who this man was and bring him down but to do that he'd need to get inside the next morning Charlie woke with a pounding headache his neck stiff from where he'd fallen asleep against the kitchen counter the empty pizza box was still on the table the ashtray full of spent cigarette butts Effie was was
already up sitting at the small table with a cup of coffee in her hands she looked over at him her eyes still heavy with sleep but there was a determination there that hadn't been present the night before morning she said Her voice soft morning Charlie replied pouring himself a cup of coffee I need a favor Effie Effie looked at him wearily setting her cup down what kind of favor Charlie took a deep breath choosing his words carefully I need to get into the Speak Easy at the Black Dalia disguised as a bartender Effie's eyes widened
and she shook her head the fear flashing across her face Charlie that's it's dangerous if they find out who you are what you're doing I know Charlie interrupted gently but it's the only way I need to find out who's behind this Effie bit her lip her fingers drumming against the table as she considered his request finally she sighed looking up at him with resignation I'm tired Charlie tired of living in fear tired of depending on a crime Lord just to get by the club used to be something else something good I want that back I
want it to be legit a real business she looked at him again for a long moment before nodding slowly all right I'll help you but you need to be careful these people they don't play around neither do I Charlie replied A Steely Edge to his voice later that day Effie led him through the back streets Keeping to the shadows as they approached the Black Dalia the sun had dipped low in the sky and the city was beginning to wake up for the night the street slowly filling with the usual even crowd people looking for excitement
for trouble for a way to forget the world for a few hours Effie took Charlie through a narrow alley behind the club stopping at a heavy unmarked door she knocked three times and the door creaked open a Burly man with a scar across his cheek peered out his eyes narrowing at the sight of Charlie this him the man grunted yeah he's good Effie replied smoothly her voice carrying an authority that Charlie hadn't heard before he's here to help out tonight the man eyed Charlie for a moment longer before stepping aside allowing them both to enter
the door closed behind them with a heavy thud and they were plunged into a long hallway the sound of muffled music and laughter echoed through the walls growing louder as they made their way deeper into the club Effie LED Charlie through a maze of corridors pasted rooms where the real business of the Black Dalia took Place rooms filled with card games dice and whispered deals that could make or break a man the sharp scent of expensive liquor infused the air a heady mix that seemed to pulse with the heartbeat of the club itself finally they
reached the Speak Easy a hidden room tucked away behind a false wall it was a stark contrast to the rest of the club smaller more intimate but just just as luxurious the bar was polished to a high Shine the bottles behind it reflecting the low light in a thousand different shades of Amber and gold the patrons here were different too sharper more dangerous these were the people who knew the game who played for Keeps Effie handed Charlie a bartender's apron her expression serious just keep your head down serve the drinks and listen don't do anything
to draw attention Charlie nodded slipping the apron on and stepping behind the bar the role came naturally after all a bartender was just another kind of listener someone who heard all the secrets people were too drunk or too arrogant to keep to themselves as the night wore on Charlie served drinks with relative ease his ears open for any hint of the Man he was after he made small talk with the patrons all while keeping an eye on the room watching for anything that might give him a clue he saw the flicker of nervous glances the
tight Smiles that didn't reach the eyes the way some men leaned in just a little too close when they spoke as if they were afraid of being overheard the money flowed freely the liquor even more so but there was an undercurrent of fear that no amount of alcohol could drown out Charlie noticed the way the servers moved the girls who worked the room with practiced Grace they weren't just serving drinks they were watching listening taking note of every exchange every whispered secret they were part of the fabric of this place and they knew more than
they let on then there were the men who sat in the shadows the ones who never raised their voices who rarely moved they were the ones who controlled the flow of the night the ones who nodded or shook their heads to Signal the end of a conversation the closing of a deal Charlie couldn't put names to faces yet but he knew that these were the men who mattered the ones who held the power then just As the night was beginning to wne a man walked up to the bar a man who commanded Ed attention without
saying a word he was tall with broad shoulders and a presence that seemed to fill the room his hair thick and stre with silver was slicked back with meticulous Precision adding to the aura of authority that surrounded him his face was angular with high cheekbones and a strong jaw the kind of face that that had seen much and given away little there was a certain hardness to his features softened only slightly by The Faint lines at the corners of his sharp dark eyes that missed nothing he was dressed impeccably in a tailored suit that clung
to his frame with the ease of long familiarity the suit was a deep charcoal gray the fabric so fine it seemed to absorb the dim light giving him an almost shadowy appearance his shirt was crisp white as snow with cufflinks that glinted gold every time he moved his hands but it was the tie that caught Charlie's attention a deep rich blue with a subtle Sheen that hinted at the quality of the silk it was the kind of tie that wasn't just an accessory but a statement Charlie kept his expression neutral as he poured The man's
drink careful not to let on that he'd already marked him as someone important evening Charlie said his tone casual as he handed over the glass that's a sharp tie you've got there looks like it's worth more than my whole wardrobe the man glanced down at his tie his lips curling into a faint knowing smile you've got a good eye he replied his voice deep and smooth with a slight rasp that suggested years of whiskey and cigars it's Bellamy silks they don't make them like this anymore Charlie nodded feigning a casual interest Bellamy silks huh I've
heard of them supposed to be the best right only the best the man confirmed taking a slow sip of his drink his eyes flicked up meeting Charlie's for just a moment a brief assessing glance that felt like a challenge Charlie maintained his relaxed posture playing the role of the friendly bartender who knew when to keep things light always figured those were out of my league he said with a chuckle but I guess when you know quality you don't settle for less the man's smile widened slightly a thin line that didn't quite reach his eyes the
tie the brand the man's demeanor it all fit this was the man Who was pulling the strings the one connected to the murders but Charlie knew better than to press further he had what he needed confirmation that this man was linked to Bellamy silks the same brand tied to the murders now he just had to wait for the right moment to act the man finished his drink gave Charlie a nod and slipped back into the Shadows of the Speak Easy disappearing as quietly as he had arrived as the night Drew to a close and the
last patrons filtered out Charlie slipped out the back of the Speak Easy and made his way to a nearby pay phone the cool air a welcome change from the stifling atmosphere of of the club the streets were still quiet the city not yet awake he dropped a coin into the slot and dialed Ray Donovan's number it didn't take long for Ry to answer his voice thick with sleep but quickly sharpening when he recognized Charlie's voice he spoke keeping his tone low I've got something for you you there's an illegal Speak Easy at the Black Dalia
and I think I've found the man behind the murders the ties the ones used to kill Loris and CLA and Vivien Hayes their Bellamy silks same brand as the tie he was wearing Tonight Ry was silent for a moment the kind of Silence that spoke of careful consideration you sure about this I'm damn sure Charlie replied his grip tightening on the receiver he's the one Ray you need to move fast before he realizes what's coming Ry let out a slow breath his tone turning all business all right we'll move on the place before he has
a chance to slip away you st stay clear Charlie this is going to get rough Charlie hung up the weight of the night's events finally settling in he'd done his part and now it was up to Ry and the uniforms to bring the man to Justice he made his way to a small bar across the street from the Black Dalia a place that catered to the early morning crowd those who were just finishing their shifts or those who never really went to sleep he ordered a whiskey neat and took a seat by the window watching
the entrance to the club the minutes ticked by slowly the first light of dawn creeping over the rooftops and then just as the sun began to rise he saw them Ry and his team moving in with purpose The Raid was quick a blur of movement and the sound of shouts echoing down the street Charlie watched as the police Stormed the club breaking through the facade that had hidden so much Darkness he couldn't see the details from where he sat but he didn't need to he knew what was happening inside knew that the man with the
tie had finally finally met his match when it was over Charlie downed the rest of his whiskey and left a tip on the table he stepped out into the Morning Light the city around him stirring to life the hum of traffic and the distant sound of voices filling the air as he walked away hands in the pockets of his coat his thoughts drifted to Laura and viven two women who had dared to hope for something better who had taken the risk even knowing the dangers they hadn't made it but their courage had brought down a
man who had thought himself Untouchable the city was still the same a place of Shadows and secrets where the powerful prayed on the weak and where Hope was a rare and fragile thing but for now Charlie allowed himself a moment of quiet satisfaction he had made a difference however small in a city that rarely changed he thought of Effie and how she had found the strength to help Him to stand up against the darkness maybe it was time to pay her a visit again to see what could be rebuilt From the Ashes of what they
had torn down and maybe just maybe there was still a glimmer of hope in this city like the last drag of a cigarette faint fleeting but real and so my friends we close tonight's case and file it away may your nights be calm your drinks strong and your thoughts just a little bit lighter keep your wits about you and watch your back this City's got a way of surprising you when you least expect it until next time stay sharp and sleep well for [Music] for for for For [Music] for e for e [Music] e [Music]
