hello dear listeners today we're diving into a topic that touches many of us fears and phobias we're joined by Dr Emily Hart a psychologist who specializes in this area welcome Dr Hart thank you I'm excited to be here Dr Hart could you help us understand what exactly a phobia is and how it differs from a fear of course essentially a fear is an automatic and necessary response to potential danger which can actually be quite protective a phobia on the other hand is more intense it's an overwhelming and unreasonable fear that can lead to avoidance of
everyday situations for example someone might avoid all dogs because they were frightened by one years ago that must be quite challenging what are some of the more common phobias you encounter there are several common phobias such as the fear of heights flying and spiders each significantly impacting Daily Life by limiting activities however some less discussed phobias can be even more restrictive social anxiety disorder for instance severely restricts individuals from engaging in social interactions affecting participation in common settings such as workplaces social Gatherings and public events agoraphobia is also debilitating it involves intense fear of places
or situations where Escape is difficult or help is unavailable such as Open Spaces or public areas in severe cases it can lead to individuals fearing to leave their homes entirely what happens physically and emotionally when someone faces their phobia physically people might break out in a cold sweat shake or feel their heart pounding panic attacks are also not uncommon and these can be so intense that individuals might feel as though they are having a heart attack emotionally reactions can range from mild unease to full-blown panic making it feel as though they are in real danger
that sounds intense how can people begin to overcome these phobias treatment often involves gradual exposure to the fear in a safe and controlled way this helps build up tolerance and reduces the fear response over time support from a therapist can also provide the tools to cope with and eventually reduce the phobia impact on one's life do you have any advice for our listeners who might be struggling with a fear or phobia start small facing a phobia can seem daunting but small manage steps make a big difference also remember seeking help is a sign of strength
not weakness talking about your fears in a supportive environment can be incredibly effective Dr Hart thank you for sharing your expertise with us today it's been a really enlightening conversation my pleasure thanks for having me and to our listeners keep pushing your boundaries at your own pace until next time take care
