[Music] chapter 2 of Frankenstein begins when Victor is 17 and his parents have decided he attend the University of Ingolstadt in Germany before he leaves however Elizabeth falls ill with scarlet fever while taking care of her Victor's mother Caroline contracts the fever on her deathbed she asks Elizabeth to care for the younger children she also makes Victor and Elizabeth promise they will marry a few weeks after his mother's death Victor leaves for Ingolstadt there he rents an apartment and lives alone Victor describes two of his professors Monsieur krempe and Monsieur Waldman Kremp who teaches natural
things and his female victor for studying the alchemists Waldman in contrast is kindly and supportive so Victor decides to study chemistry with Waldman as his mentor while Victor is content in his solitude the same cannot be said of his eventual foil the monster in this duality Victor and the monster can be seen as doubles two halves of the same person where Victor could have companionship but does not desire it the monster longs for it but is rejected at every turn
