South America for the very first time continent number six and more specifically Santiago Chile this is quite a change from the chaos of daaka Bangladesh after that trip we went home spent some time with family and then embarked on the 15-hour flight from London to the capital of Chile we only really have around the day to explore as much as humanly possible before embarking on a 3 we trip around three South American countries and ticking off continent number seven but first Santiago Chile one of the world's longest and narrowest countries in a city of over
6 million people let's do this everything is just so new to us we're actually staying in the area of Las Condes which is like an affluent business district and our hotel is in such good location we had cocktails up on our rooftop yesterday cheers cheers and you literally have the most amazing views of the Andes which surround this city I would highly recommend staying in this area if you're coming to Santiago it's definitely a very walkable part of the city maybe a quieter part of the city rather than the historic downtown in the more touristy
areas but everything everything feels so new from the smells to the sites to the food to the currency especially the language which is actually quite exciting after being in Asia for quite a long time being in a new continent not knowing what's going on feeling very vulnerable it's just exciting isn't it hola graas gracias thank you bye-bye adios o is pretty expensive in Santiago for around a 10minute journey that just cost more than $10 us but we have made it to the zero point of the city the very center the beaten heart Plaza Dez armor
dating back to around the 16th century and it has everything that you'd expect to find in a main square of a capital city from the incredibly impressive Cathedral behind me to restaurants boulevards and some incredible architecture and museums but we don't like museums also in the park there's seems to be ladies of the night or ladies of the day whatever you want to call them and we have been warned by our hotel and actually somebody in the park here just to be careful of your belongings I think to be honest though it's pretty much the
same in every city center just keep hold of your phones you be all right I feel like if you stay on the outskirts don't go in with the ladies of the night don't go into the park I mean I mean unless you want a lady of the night now we have briefly spoken about Squarespace in one of our previous videos but if you don't know Squarespace is an all-in-one website platform for whether you are just starting out or whether you are actually managing a growing business Squarespace makes it super easy to create an amazing website

all dressed up with their legs out it's coffee with legs it's a very unique con certainly a lot of men com to drink coffee but also lots of families too because it's become sort of an integral part of San Diego's coffee coach it's definitely C for a coffee wow they are super strong but this was 2,100 each which is just under 2 [Music] lb this is literally just off of the main square a 1 minute walk and like Molly said not only they do a pretty average coffee you get it served in style with a
lot of legs we weren't actually sure this would still be open today we had seen it previously about 20 years ago when the late great Anthony Bourdain came here and he enjoyed a lot more than just his cappuccino I am all for a country keeping its Traditions especially Traditions that are like that we now have the energy to continue walking around the center of Santiago and all of these long boulevards that come off the main Square the only problem our Spanish is terrible we really really really need to practice our Spanish even ordering something as
simple as a coffee turns into quite the [Music] exercise overall first impression of Santiago as a city is that it's extremely walkable and actually very very clean it's kind of given well for us anyway we're looking at it as an Athens cross Belgrade with a little bit of like a Latin flare I like the flare of my coffee I must admit the coffee with Flare has definitely given me the energy to head up St Lucia Hill one of the two hills in the city center of Santiago and apparently has amazing views over the lataria area
of the city but look again just so many super modern buildings I don't know what I was expecting but Santiago is one of the most modern cities I think we have ever been to I was expecting the old town to be sort of rough around the edges but even the old town was sort of modern it is absolutely scorching boiling hot today if you come to Chile January February Peak summertime expect 30Β° heat for your hikes up the hill but this here the hill that we sit on is actually a 15 million year old volcano
so hopefully the views at the top are worth it the views from up here are absolutely insane it's so vast this city and you can just it's a little bit hazy but you can see the Andes all surrounding us we've got Bell Vista Laria over here behind me you can see the hill that we're going to head to later on today and you can also see the area that we are staying in well this is definitely a little bit different at the bottom of the hill is La Arista I think I'm saying that right I
might be butchering it but this is the more hip Bohemian part of town you can see it is lined with thrift shops restaurants bars museums trees growing out of the blooming buildings but we are on the hunt for a drink cuz we have worked up quite a thirst doing the hike and in my best Spanish does sesa Poore or does Pisco Sour Poore I don't know well this is very nice it's very quirky very themed you have like the Andy's experience there you've got bookshops you've got small sellers everywhere but as Matt said we've got
a thir it's go show yeah either either I'm not bothered thank you gracias yes please that's amig thank you br the CH yes that is me best chili thank you niches is the category white or transparent because the just keep finish steel okay the second is a Nora H have between 12 on three J and barrels oh wow yes uh for this reason it's a little bit more gold and here the pilet and haras flavor similar to the Bon okay vanilla caramel almond and butter the pen is American is this kind of Aromas because some
Pisco is ancient CNAC Barrel but in this kind of Pisco the haras is similar to the the tree I I put a little bit por of the PCO in the part on the front of the tee okay because in this one can you feel acidity and alcohol so put it here and then swallow perfect okay thank you so much Cheers Cheers this is chaper Libre supposedly the best place to get Pisco in the city Pisco is the national liquor of Chile and apparently there's a bit of a feud between Chile and Peru about who does
it better who does it first now the good thing about this place is that it actually Embraces both so you can try the Peruvian Pisco or you can try the chili Pisco we have actually of course I don't know cheat and chili we're choosing the chili and I don't ask me which one I've got I think it was like Governor or something and this is the Pisco Sour so you have egg whites on top unbelievably refreshing delicious I won't be able to describe it any other way I am oh look at that incredibly incredibly excited
for this we earned it we earned our Pisco sour the closest thing it resembles is a whiskey sour it has the egg white on top your Pisco and a little bit of magic in between even has a star on the top cheers oh it's refreshing it's fruity and I love this could be the new goto whiskey sour is my favorite cotell that is giving it a great battle we've just basically gone for full Chilean experience Pisco Sour empadas Pisco flights before I try an empada I'm just going to try the Pisco on his own so
as you heard the waiter you put it at the front we drunk it's like 2:00 the face you trying to get it oh wow oh God it it's just so strong yeah like really strong and also I can't remember what he said about all of them but he did say that it gets like oier and Smokey as it go on it's so strong when we ordered it he was like like that's pure alcohol we were like yeah we know yeah not sure about that one you can't come to South America and not get the empanadas
I don't know how to actually do this with Theo Deo type sauce I think this one is with beef the Chilean Empanada is beef egg and olive so I presume that is what this is our Spanish is so so yeah oh wow let me see beef cheese and Olive it's very good the Rivalry between Chile and Peru over the Pisco goes back to Colonial times and there's a lot of differences between the two whether that's the variety of grapes using water or not using water and so many other factors but like I said if you're
in Chile don't have a Bloomin Peruvian pis that's very nice I like that it reminds me a little bit slightly of rakia all of that came to around 31,000 Chilean pesos so about 30 English you're going to find Santiago is not the cheapest of cities but is definitely value for money we are now walking from one Bohemian HIIT area to the next and in between we have heard is the best place to have one of the most famous sandwiches in all of Chile and here it is I mean it's not the most appealing of restaurants
I mean I don't have the highest of hopes for it however I feel like lace curtains and pretty much a yeah I was going to say it looks extremely local inside my humbles let's try and work out our Spanish this is as local as it gets oh we've just HED in I have no idea what we're doing we're everyone's looking at us let's sit down regroup and work out whether we order cuz there's a lady sat in the corner do we order with the lady or do we order here I don't know cheers Che our
first Chilean surve s is it good it's needed it's very needed after our Pisco s to go on to the Chilean beer I didn't actually expect to be having a beer but we are right in front of the kitchen right now this is an institution it dates back to 1975 and it specializes in all things sandwiches Chilean sandwiches and you can sit here right around the open kitchen and watch our actual sandwich completos our hot dog being made thank you so much Gracia oh my goodness look at that the completos Italiano now there's lots of
different ways that you can have it but completos Italiano consists of avocado tomato mayonnaise and the hot dog now mayonnaise that is a be on top of tomato and avocado just doesn't sit with me but yeah oh my God how do I even eat this I actually feel like we're doing an Anthony bouraine tour because sh he came here too but here goes God knows how I eat this M your nose I'm getting tissue yeah it's so good so everything is made in house the bread the mayonnaise the avocado pour in fresh and it's just
delicious it's kind of weird on top of a hot hot dog to have like avocado and tomato and mayonnaise but I'm here for it I love this you do not get any more local than here apparently the decor hasn't changed for 50 years and a lot of the chefs in front of you have been here for the last 30 to 40 years preparing your delicious sandwiches I've already had a bite I'm going in for one more eat it so gracefully gracefully you don't it's just it's just a mess the sausage po dog sausage oh my
God it reminds me if when I used to go to football games and it's the exact same sort of Pop dog sausage that you get then guacamole Tomatoes mayonnaise Heaven these are definitely the experiences you remember sat in a Chilean styled Diner watching your food be made right in front of you and chucking on some extra mustard onto your hot dog because the mustard is made out of the beer that you drink here I think I've just found my favorite place in the entire city if you want a compos or if you want a chilian
sandwich and watch that meat that avocado be prepared right in front of your eyes you now know where to go to like I said dating back to 1975 we are now just walking through Bell Vista which is another Bohemian area lined with bar off bar off to bar but we're skipping the bars we've been in the bars for far too long today we are on the hunt for the finicula it's a really cool little Street area you can see behind me it's just lined with graffiti bright colors very vibrant you got cool bars you got
arcade bars um everywhere selling SAA I could have stayed in that Plaza like 30 bars all day we've done it we've done it twice we need to get [Music] moving yeah thank you and this is why we're in a rush through Bell Vista to make the last finicula of the day to head up to St Christa Bell Hill reviews of the entire city of Santiago have a look at this we made it and that definitely saved the 45 minute hike to the top of the hill to see 14 M statue of the Virgin Mary but
really you come up here for the views of the city and we opted to get the finicula up and then the cable car thing on the way on the way down and I'm I'm out of breath from the two-minute hike like 45 minutes that would not be for me I actually think the views at St Lucia are better but the fact that you get to get on a finicula and get the cable car I think it slightly winds it the views from up here are incredible and I wasn't expecting it to go this fast [Music]
either and we're down we made it like Molly said the views from the top were not the best with the cable car made it all worth it we have now come down and we have arrived in Providencia which is another affluent builtup area and behind me the end of the river there is sky costaa this is the tallest building in all of South America you can actually pay to go up it but I've heard it's very expensive you're inside and the views from on top of the local Hills are so much better well that was
Santiago Chile short but very sweet such a hip City with so many things to do and we would highly recommend a visit we decided to grab a couple of craft beers to end our only day in the capital as tomorrow we have an early start we embark on our 17-day cruise around South America and Antarctica we'll see you in the next [Music] one
