all right everyone it is finally time for the 2024 New York City marathon this is one of the Premier marathon races on the planet and for this 2024 installment there are an estimated 50,000 people hitting the streets of New York City for a fast time and thankfully conditions are looking solid this morning with temperatures hovering around 45° Fahrenheit there is no rain present at all and the wind is fairly minimal with a few gusts here and there but for the most part things are looking great for a quick run now for the elite fields in
today's race we honestly have some of the deepest and most talented Fields assembled in New York City history on the women's side we have six athletes with personal records under 2 hours and 20 minutes and for the men we have seven athletes who have run under 2 hours and 6 minutes out of these super quick Runners some of the more notable names include the returning Champion Helen obiri we have the eth I opian Legend Tanish taba we also have Vivian Chariot from Kenya who has won various Global titles as well and on the men's side
we have this year's silver medalist from the Olympics we have four returning New York City champions in Evans chabet Jeffrey camuro Albert career and tamarat TOA and specifically for tamarat TOA he is considered by many as the clear pre-race favorite as he not only won last year's marathon in record-breaking time but he was also this year's Olympic champion with with a new olympic record as well so make sure to keep your eyes on him for this New York City marathon to kick off the opening stages of this race Runners have to embark on a significant
climb as they make their way over the venzano Narrows Bridge connecting Staten Island and Brooklyn this is quite the iconic start for a marathon major and even though it is straight uphill for this opening mile the athletes still find a way to run fast now on the women's side the opening stages were solid considering the straight uphill run and for the opening 5 km they passed through this split in 18 minutes and 16 seconds an effort equivalent to 554 per mile or 339 per km as was pointed out by the announcers this will probably be
the slowest 5K split on the day given the challenging nature of this opening stage but either way they were off and running and their projected finish was just outside of 2 hours and 35 minutes now on the men's side we actually saw a pretty interesting break up front as Yumi Mory from Japan Conor Manz Abdi nayi and Rory link letter from Canada all took a small lead over these opening stages with the rest of the field running a more conservative approach over this bridge Crossing it is quite common to see a few individuals break from
the pack early in a big Marathon like this but to do it over the opening mile while running uphill in New York is certainly quite risky so we'll have to wait and see see how the strategy pans out for these four through the 5 km split the men's race was quite crowded up front as Albert career Rory link litter and many others passed through and right at 16 minutes flat and at this point in the race their Pace was around 5 minutes and 10 seconds per mile which was certainly slower than what they're truly capable
of running but it was almost a guarantee that they were set to pick up the pace drastically over the remaining stages of this Marathon so even though the projected finish was right around 2113 to to 14 at this point things were certainly set to get crazy over the second half back over to the women's race and the pace did increase quite significantly over the opening half marathon after their opening 5K split of 1816 they did manage to drop their Pace down from 554 per mile to 5 minutes and 39 seconds per mile these following 5
km splits remained much faster than their opening 5 km and this remained constant all the way up through the half marathon lit and with an opening half of 1 hour and 14 minutes they had already shifted gears into much quicker running and while the course record of Margaret oo from 2003 was still quite the distance away there was potential that they could run a super quick second half and perhaps challenge This Record it's also important to mention that the field here at the halfway split was still quite deep as many of the Heavy Hitters were
still running strong including Helen obiri Vivian Chariot Tanish taba Dez Lindon and the four 44-year-old Legend Edna kipot this race was really just getting started and the drama set to unfold over the second half really was amazing so stay tuned for this epic race on the women's side back over to the men's race and the pace had also shifted towards much quicker running is after their opening 5K in 16 minutes flat the men picked up the pace with a second 5K in 1528 followed by a third 5K split in 1526 so the men were also
trending faster and was also still very much packed together with more than 20 athletes in the lead pack it really was almost inevitable that a huge break was soon set to take place but who would make the move and just how fast would their second half be through the halfway split the athletes on the men side split a time of 1 hour 5 minutes and 33 seconds which represents a pace right at 5 minutes per mile or 3 minutes and 7 seconds per kilometer and now upfront pushing the pace was none other than tamarat TOA
who had laid back for the opening half marathon but he was now looking to make his presence known for this year's race and we finally saw a sharp increase in Pace the moment the men hit Thunder Alley the previous winners absolutely took off as Evans chabet Albert career Jeffrey camuro and tamarat TOA took to the front and pushed the pace drastically this was a dominant move from these four and it was super cool to see that all of them were working together as previous Champions and with a previous 5K split of 14 minutes and 9
seconds this was Far and Away the fastest 5K split on the day from anyone and it actually was under 2hour flat pace for the previous 5 km so things were officially starting to unfold on the men's side and while the course record was still practically Out Of Reach these final moments were set to be very special back to the women's side and these final moments were unfolding in a super dramatic way because along with Helen obiri and Sheila chip karui was The 41-year-old viven Chariot from Kenya who was running right along with these two over
the final 5K at this point in the race their Pace was right at 5 minutes and 30 seconds per mile and from the 35 km split up to 40K they passed through in 16 minutes and 24 seconds by far their fastest 5K split on the day with just about 1 km remaining both Helen obiri and Sheila chep karui did manage to drop Vivian Chariot and then just after 2 hours and 23 minutes ched kuui opened her stride and managed to drop Helen obiri this was honestly quite surprising as obiri was last year's NYC champion and
last year's Boston Marathon Champion but for today it was all chip karui who strided her way to her first New York City marathon title in 2 hours 24 minutes and 35 seconds an incredible race as she negative split this Marathon by 3 and 1/2 minutes in order to finish in the top 10 on the women's side you had to run a time under 2 hours and 28 meaning that in order to be a top finisher you had to run a negative split this was a very entertaining and mature race on the women's side and over
to the men's side these final few kilometers were also quite special with around 25 minutes left to run the race was now down to five athletes and these athletes were four pre Champions and the new rival to the throne Abdi nagia it was really anyone's guess as to who would take the crown here but something that many did not see coming was the fact that tamarat TOA was soon to be dropped because with just one mile remaining the race was now down to Evans chabet and Abdi ngia through the 40 km split these two hit
a time of 2 hours 1 minute and 10 seconds representing an overall pace of 4 minutes and 53 seconds per mile EV shabet put in a big effort to drop his competitor but incredibly ngia held right behind chabet even though he was digging to drop his rival these final five or 6 minutes were honestly all grit and was really set to be a race of heart and determination running through Central Park these two had officially separated themselves from everybody else in this field and they were still running neck and neck with just a few minutes
remaining but then the final move happened just after passing 2 hour hours and 6 minutes ngia passed chabet and firmly placed himself in the leading position and to this new acceleration chabet simply had no response this move did prove to be the definitive break in this year's NYC marathon and with a finishing time of 2 hours 7 minutes and 39 seconds Abdi took this win by 6 seconds over chabet who finished in second place in 2 hours 7 minutes and 45 seconds finishing Behind These two was again a very strong field including tamarat TOA and
other previous Champions and just to finish in the top 10 on the men's side you had to run under 2 hours in 11 minutes on both the men's and the women's sides today we saw pretty massive negative splits and when we compare these efforts graphically we can see the both winners more or less accelerated all the way through the finish this year's New York City marathon was honestly awesome and for both Sheila chip karui and Abdi nagia this was their first marathon majors of their careers so congratulations to these two on incredible performances thanks for
watching everyone and as always until next time
