in the last video we spoke about Toyotomi Hideyoshi ii unifier of Japan after oda nobunaga when Hideyoshi's life ended we spoke about the Council of five elders who had been set up by Hideo XI to govern Japan until his infant son was old enough to rule amongst the Council of five elders was Tokugawa Ieyasu a man who we frequently mentioned since the first video on Japanese history and a very important one too but before we cover what top of gal yes who did in the wake of Hideo she's deaf let's start with his early life
and build our way up Tokugawa Ieyasu was originally named Matsudaira takechiyo the son of a powerful lord known as thymio in Japan named Matt styie Hara tada his mother was known as lady Oh died the daughter of a samurai Lord in the neighboring settlement Boethius whose parents were just 17 and 15 years old when he was born es who would grow up in a turbulent household where by the Matsudaira clan would eventually split up as a result of several defections of key members to Odin a bahid a the father of oda nobunaga and the ODA
clan mizuna Naboo moto the older brother of Lady of Dai would inherit his father's clan and would go on to declare for Otonabee he day as well and in the process would withdraw mizuno support from the Matsudaira clan as a result yes his father he retarder with divorced lady Oh died and sent her back to her family they were going to remarry and would have several children as you can imagine yes who now had a broken family where his parents would be far too preoccupied raising our children in fact he would eventually have a total
of 11 half-brothers and sisters Noba he would attack he retired a stronghold in 1548 in an attempt to get them answered ira to yield to his clan but here Tata seem like a prideful man and wasn't about to go and concede so easily he would seek out a Miguel Yoshimoto a powerful clan leader who was said to have 20,000 men at his disposal and alliance was formed between he retarder and a Miguel under the condition that he ratata with sin es su as a hostage but nobody would learn about this arrangement and when he se
was being transported to a Maga WA he had the entourage apprehended whereby yes he was abducted all this and yes he was only 5 years old / he would friend to kill the child if he retarder refused to sever his ties with in Maga WA and concede to him it hit him quite clearly see where Oda Nobunaga obtained his ruthlessness when it came to killing anyone in order to further his own agenda but he retarder refused to yield even now stating that sacrificing his own son only showed how committed he was to standing against number
he day but despite his frets hoping he would hold on to year su for the next three years at a temple in Nagoya in 1549 hero Tata would meet his own end when he was murdered by his own men who had been bribed by Odin Appa he day interestingly enough it seemed that karma came around pretty quickly because open overheat they would die shortly after due to an epidemic the death of Nava he'd a deflated the ODA clan and to make matters worse in Macau a late seat on the new head of the ODA clan
of the Nova hero the oldest son Theo two siblings the Costner wished not the hero was staying that was about to fall and so a Miguel offered a deal to oda nobunaga no bahid a second son that he would retreat all of his forces if he was given the air soo Nobunaga didn't see any other choice and holding onto asu at this point had little benefit so he agreed EAS su who was only nine years old at this point was taken hostage once more though this time by the image our clan where he would have
remained for another four years upon the age of twelve he was allowed to visit the tomb of his father in Okazaki where he would pay his respects but it's unclear as to how he would have felt about this experience bearing in mind his father had sent him away in the first place to consolidate his own power and upon being captured his father had refused to come for him it's quite an achievement in itself that yes who would grow up to be quite well rounded given his turbulent childhood as opposed to his would be bloodthirsty allies
in Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi by the age of 13 he was already married to lady Sugiyama a relative of himegami shamoto he would be allowed to move back to his native province in Mikawa but pretty soon in Macao would alter him to fight the ODA clan in a series of battles yes he would fight his first battle in 1558 at the age of 18 at the siege of Terra Bay a governor known as Hazuki suketaro who was working for a Miguel WA betrayed the clan by defecting to oda nobunaga it was noted as Tsuzuki
suketaro was holding out within Matsudaira territory and so EAS who was ordered by a Maga wa to bring him to justice yes who was so hot encouraged for his first battle going on to lead the attack in person but he grew suspicious of a counter attack from the rear perhaps the first sign of his great insight when it came to battle and life in general so he burned the castle in which Suzuki was hiding out in an altered a retreat what does he get anticipated oda forces attacked the rear lines but as the air soo
was prepared for them he was able to drive them off with little hassle in 1560 the leadership of the ODA clan would be taken up by oda nobunaga Nobunaga as i mentioned in my previous videos would go head to head with a miguel Yoshimoto who was leading a force of 25,000 men in miguel Yoshimoto would of course lose this battle as most of his men were caught off guard drinking as well as Nobunaga's deceptions on the battlefield which would contribute to his downfall Nobunaga would lead just free thousand men to secure victory against the image
our clan at the Battle of okie Hazama during this battle yes who was assigned to capture the stronghold of maroon and therefore much day's relief was not present during the battle in Macau Hashimoto would be cut down by Oda Nobunaga's men signifying the end of the image our clan we've a Miguel your shamoto dead yes you had to think fast in order to keep what was left of the men alive he would March them back to Okazaki Castle the same course on which he was born which had long since been abandoned after the rift between
his family it's hidden he reclaimed his ancestral sea and began to wonder how different his clan might have been had he been the one calling the shots seeing as the image our clamor on the lost legs after the battle oke Hazama es who would ally himself with oda nobunaga but the deal was done in secret because he asked his wife liddie Tsukiyama and her infant son no be a zoo was still in image our territory closely watched by yoshi motors air googe's anni in 1561 yes he would openly break away from the image our clan
and captured the fortress of kami no go yes it would complete the entire operation under the cover of stealth moving in darkness to set fire to the castle and capturing two sons of Dona nagamachi an important rasa love in Miguel Yoshimoto the esse uses two sons to bargain for the safe return of his wife and son a few years later in 1563 es whose son Noriyasu would marry Oda Nobunaga's daughter took a humane strengthen in their alliance for the next few years yes who would begin reforming the matsudaira clan as he retook control of the
Macao province but he was soon come into conflict of the eco iki movement a group of peasants who had banded together of militant monks whereby they rejected traditional feudal social order yes they would undergo several battles with the Eco iki going on to recruit warrior monks from a neighboring temple of die juji to aid him in battle in the battle as you Kazakh a fierce battle between matsudaira forces and the Eco aqui es who would throw himself on the frontlines with the intention of getting his hands bloody he would have her become struck by two
bullets which would have killed him had it not been for his samurai armor protecting him it should be noted that the battle has two Kazakh a few of the Aces men would betray him and join the Eco iki on the basis of religious commitment or mere sympathy but after seen es whose fearlessness on the battlefield they were quick to turn back in 1570 EAS Sood make an alliance with Takeda Shingen of the Takeda clan allowing him to conquer the entirety of the Macau province but ase would prove to be crafty as he portrayed Takeda Shingen
by siding with his enemy in the north you see ki Kenshin of the Eustachy clan who operated in the province of citta me having laid siege to him already yes who would offer the Kenshin the chance to live if he surrendered to Tommy over to him as well first increasing his own power it was through this political place that ASC would gain support of samurai in a tatami province and would slowly begin to build his numbers it was these sorts of moves that was allowed to aid Nobunaga in the battle of a nagawa to crush
their zionist Sakura clans who were proving to be a phone in a bonaga site Takeda Shingen wasn't about to forget this betrayal though he allied himself with the Hojo plan of Odawara and the taxa Tommy which Tokugawa had sailed in a fearing the worse Tokugawa asked Nobunaga for help who had sent him close to 3,000 samurai in only 1572 the two sides would meet at the Battle of makita Kihara but shingen's forces were great in number Shingen was also a great strategist perhaps more so than Tokugawa who would have his forces overwhelmed EAS they would
have no choice but to retreat from the battle but to maintain a dignified exit yes who ordered his men at the castle to light torches sound off the drums and leave the gates open to honor the Warriors who had was hand but following enough this meant Akitas force is suspicious and they believe that took a gal was leading them into a trap therefore they didn't siege the castle and press the attack which would have been mightily successful had they done so instead they sab camp for the night allow it to her gal to set up
a devious ploy he wouldn't listen India to raid the camp in the early hours of the morning when it was still dark disorientating shingen's army and ultimately leading to them were shooting instead Takeda Shingen would suddenly die soon after from throat cancer and would be succeeded by his son takeda katsuyori in 1575 katsuyori would hold a vendetta against Tokugawa and would attack him at his home at Naga Shino castle in Macao province but under the request of Tokugawa Oda Nobunaga himself would lead an army of thirty thousand samurai upon katsuyori beating them back to the
Chi province in which they came from seven years would go by where Yasuo kasi or II would engage in several small skirmishes katsuyori would become a major part of es his life in fact four aces wife lady Tsukiyama and his son Naboo Yasu were accused by Nobunaga for conspiring to assassinate him under pressure from the bonaga took our order his wife to be executed and forced no BS ooh to commit seppuku yes who would name his third son took a guru hit a toda as his heir as his second oldest son had been adopted by
Toyotomi Hideyoshi the man who'd become the second unifier of Japan but let's briefly talk about that moment when Tokugawa Ieyasu ordered the death of his own wife and child under the order of Nobunaga it's probably one of the most traumatic events that the man had experienced in his already harsh life from what we know about ladies Sugiyama it's that he did not like her son's wife at all in fact some sources say that she was even jealous of the attention that nabi gasps who gave her which is a little bit creepy as I mentioned earlier
no b.s his wife took a he may was the daughter of oda nobunaga and so she wrote to her father explained in her concerned about her mother-in-law going on to accuse her of a treasonous plot with the Takeda clan when Nobunaga bought this allegation - yes his attention he immediately had his wife confined and then had her killed so as to dismiss any doubt of his loyalty to Nobunaga it's hard to imagine even being able to conceive the idea of killing a loved one for the sake of loyalty to another but it appears as if
he who showed no signs of hesitation when proving his dedication to the cause of Nobunaga he would even go on to have his own son no BS su who wasn't mentioned by Tookie he may in her letter confined as well where he would be ordered to commit suicide this may took him a sinister plan to have her mother-in-law removed backfired tremendously because she would lose her husband as well everyone was about to lose someone they loved all because of a lie but I imagine some of you are wondering why yes you had a son nobody
asked who imprisoned and killed as well well the answer might shock you in a heartfelt letter he wrote to his son while imprisoned yes to explain that he understood that no BS who had nothing to do with the supposed plot but that he also understood the no BS ooh was feel obligated to avenge his mother and that would mean striking against others of Onaga the idea of revenge would proves too great a risk for yes who-who feared he would be compelled to join his son's quest for vengeance because of oda nobunaga forcing his own hand
to kill his wife Tsukiyama so the order for noble yes sir to kill himself was more of a plea by Ieyasu in order to save his own integrity and for the security of the plan in a Nobunaga rule Japan but not be asked to own that his father's wishes and did kill himself yes he was reportedly said to have deeply regretted the outcome and it would haunt him more than anything the Takeda clan would come to an end in 1582 with the combined forces of Nobunaga and the asu where they would conquer the cai province
at the Battle of ten movies an after the battle khel CoA would flee to the mountains and tried to gain access to an old castle held by an old Takeda retainer om added no beseech but he was denied entry what was left of Cassio his forces with hold off the approaching forces of Odin Tokugawa long enough that katsuyori was able to commit suicide in June 1582 we see the death of Oda Nobunaga at the hands of his own retainer akechi mitsuhide a at the time of this incident the air sewers in the Asarco province and
far from home once news of Nobunaga's death broke loose Japan became a free fall where the Meo and clan leaders began making place for different territory this would make a su who was a major player himself with lots of territory a huge target in a land that was now riddled with enemies he would enlist the aid of hattori hanzo who as I mentioned in my video about him would seek out family ties with various ninja clans and get them to join the air suit with a ninja platoon at his side they would ask or Ieyasu
safely back to his home in mikawa legends have it that the ninjas would use their art of ninjitsu to hide from the prying eyes of other assassins and would use these mystic powers to do away with enemies on the road by the time he was back home yes who would go about rising his army to deal with it gets him in sahih day only to find out that Toyotomi Hideyoshi had already dealt with him at the bat of Yama sake this would lead the ESC to play the game very carefully developing his own reputation for
caution and wisdom had only participated in one negotiation between himself and the Hojo plan that would see him obtain both Chi and Shinano provinces unlike yesu though pluton hideo she was raising hell in japan destroying any kindness that against him and his vision by ASC would go against Hideyoshi in 1584 choosing to side with Odin Abu katsu the eldest surviving heir of Oda Nobunaga it would be a most risky decision going against Hideyoshi because the man had very quickly amassed a huge following and wasn't shy about drawing swords and killing of those who opposed him
Tokugawa troops to control over the older stronghold of War II video she was quick to respond and sit in an army to take it back it would be known as the Komaki campaign and would be the only time that any of the great unifiers of japan would fight each other but the fighting wouldn't last long and after a series of fruitless battles and feigns hideo she would agree to peace with odin uppercut suit and easu but he s soon hideo she were untrusting of each other and wouldn't serve as real allies for another good few
years as i mentioned in my last video about Toyotomi Hideyoshi hideo she would crush the Hojo clan in Kanto and received the eight provinces in the land he would go on to offer these eight provinces to Ieyasu in exchange for the five provinces that ESU already controlled including his home of Mikawa the whole point was that these five provinces would help Hideyoshi grow even more as a superpower in Japan but the deal was pretty rotten for Ieyasu who had to carefully considered the upheaval of moving his men and all of his legislations over to a
new land in Kanto but it wasn't as if hideo she was really giving him a choice before you see was likely implied that if he s who didn't agree Hideyoshi will just take it from him in a similar way that he did to the Koreans when asking for permission to use their land as a path towards China but in the end the move to the Kanto region worked out pretty well for EAS su who reformed the Kanto provinces pacified the renegade Samurai of the Hojo and improved the economic infrastructure of the land as well as
this because of the distance between Kanto and the rest of Japan It was as if a year su had become a ruler himself well he was far away enough from Hideyoshi's jurisdiction they could make his own an old Japanese proverb actually celebrates this moment in history as well as es whose fortune and wisdom whereby it states das who won the empire by retreating in 1598 however Hideyoshi's health began to decline after hugely unsuccessful advances into china he would call a meeting that would determine the Council of five elders the five men who would be responsible
for ruling Japan in the time of video she's deaf until his infant son Toyotomi Hideyoshi was old enough to rule of course Tokugawa Ieyasu was one of the five men perhaps the one who had the most power out of the five Toyotomi Hideyoshi would die in september 1598 from sickness and would have been succeeded by his young son Hideyori but seeing as he was just five years of age the power was handed over to the Council of five elders as instructed by Hideyoshi yes who would become a very busy manager in this time period going
on to secure alliances with the daimyo who disliked Hideyoshi this would make them more likely to support him in the future as he steered Japan away from the bloody sink aku period and into the Edo period eventually though yes who would make the bold move to forcibly take over a Sukkah castle the residence of the young son Hideyori this would make for all-out war perhaps the exact opposite of what he had intended the SS opposition centered around Ishida Mitsunari who was a powerful daimyo he would plot es his death but when whether this spread the
S whose generals would hunt him down but Mitsunari was able to confront EAS su and would beg for his life which unlike Hideyoshi before yes who granted his enemy a second chance to redeem himself the reasons for sparing such a powerful enemies unknown but EAS who was a great strategist and it's possible that he spared Mitsunari because he deemed him incapable of leading his own army as effectively as one of the other die Amir who would take his place it was around this time that nearly all of the daimyo and samurai would split into two
factions the western group who served under Mitsunari and the eastern group who were against him it's an i yes it was a cornerstone for the anti Mitsunari group and would gain powerful allies including the dotter clan the Megami clan the Sasaki clan and a ma'idah clan in June 1600 yes who would wound up in a massive battle with Mitsunari known as the Battle of Sekigahara has one of the most important battles in Japanese feudal history a total of 160,000 men would face each other on the battlefield whereby took a gal would emerge victorious Mitsunari however
and most of his daimyo allies were captured and killed this would infect McGhee air sea the undisputed ruler of Japan yield remained true to his word and all the dialects allegiance to him would have land bestowed upon them furthermore the land belonging to Toyotomi Hideyoshi the son of Toyotomi Hideyoshi was stripped away from him - which further diminished his power making him nothing more than an ordinary daimyo as opposed to the successor to rule Japan those who were lured to took a gal were indeed rewarded greatly whereby those who had sided with him before the
Battle of Sekigahara would go on to become known as few died damia but those who sided with him afterwards were known as Kazama daimyo and were considered to be lesser Lords as a resolve their previous lack of faith in Him in March 1603 yes who will achieve what neva Oda Nobunaga Auto Tomica do she could and would become Shogun at this stage in his life he was 60 years old and what a remarkable 60 years he had been he would use his remaining years as soakin to solidify the Tokugawa Shogunate which would usher in the
Edo period a period of great economic growth and general peace however yes who would gather his men to purge the remnants of Toyotomi loyalists Osaka Castle and systematically eradicate all threats to his rule yes who would set the to the ghoul Clan up so well that they would rule Japan for the next 250 years they would however be one last loose end in ESS dominance over Japan the son of Toyotomi Hideyoshi who was now all grown up men saw Toyotomi Hideyoshi as the rightful heir to Hideyoshi and large groups of samurai and i meum would
flock to him with their support hid the OREA was known at this point to build a temple which EAS it took offense to because the temple itself was used to pray for his death and the ruin of the Tokugawa clan the tokugawa gone to Lacey's tosaka castle the home of Hideyori but the seat at the end with the signing of a peace treaty between a year soon Hideyori however es who showed his cunning and deception as once the treaty was signed he had his men fill the castles out of moats with sand so his men
could walk across by doing this he was able to gain even more land without shedding blood he answered order Hideyori to leave a Sukkah castle but he would refuse this would lead EES it to lead his army again to a Sukkah castle where this time hid EURion all of his defenders were killed perhaps we get a glimpse of EES whose frustration and short temper in his old age because Hideo his mother Johanna the widow of Hideo she was altered to death some say that this decision was done to put an end to the Toyotomi legacy
once and for all so we go yes they would finally die at the age of 73 the cause of death likely cancer his remains would be buried at the Gungans muscle 'i'm in Kunar zone however a common notion is to add the first anniversary of his death his remains were moved and buried at Nico's shrine but neither shrines have agreed to open their doors in check so the location as to EAS his body is actually a mystery between these two sites a final note I'd like to make is the two conspiracy theories I found about
Tokugawa Ieyasu which I found to be quite mind-blowing if they are true there is the first theory centers around the incident at honno-ji where catch him in Tahiti betrayed oda nobunaga killing him and his son as we know yes he was away at the time and as history reports yes it would rush back to avenge his lord only to find that Toyotomi Hideyoshi had already taken care of it but this is where skeptics begin to question the legitimacy of es is concerned for his Lord Nobunaga you see as I mentioned in this video Oda Nobunaga
order das is to kill his own wife which would later lead him to have his own son commit suicide so as to stop him seeking revenge and ruin in the Tokugawa clan reputation but ever since this moment according to the theory EAS will hold a secret resentment against Nobunaga the fury suggests that yes who would privately Goldman sahih date to take against earth Nobunaga and would even plan the attack together before going our separate ways when the murder was complete yes who turned his back home it's a he day and would feign innocence as we
know it only took 13 days for Toyotomi Hideyoshi to arrange Nobunaga by remove him in sahih day so it's possible that he never got the chance to tell anyone of es whose involvement another variation of the theory states that yes he was very much aware of Missy days ill feelings towards Nobunaga but chose to do nothing to warn Nobunaga for hopes that midsi they would indeed kill him another theory I'd like to talk about is the imposter theory which has arisen due to the supposed changes of behavior in the ASU throughout the years the general
ideas that offered the bat of okie Hazama ESO would be replaced by another man either there or he was killed in battle and had to be replaced though the theory implies he was replaced by a doppelganger one who adopted his position and became the new Tokugawa Ieyasu mustered the ignorance of many others another variation includes that es who was switched out when he was a young hostage for another young boy who was deemed a more suitable heir the original es who was said to flee and live a hermits life none of these theories however have
much in the way of evidence though it's fun to speculate and imagine the repercussions of such events if they were in fact true but EES whose behavior did in fact fluctuate throughout the years as we've seen for the most part he was considered of careful bold calculating but also compassionate for he granted enemies freedom where others would have killed them as was the case with Ishida Mitsunari but then other times we see mo hoshi acid notably the merciless elimination of Toyotomi loyalists including the hunting and killing of an 8 year old son of one of
toyota a hideous concubines this concubine in question was also beheaded yes it was also tolerant of Christianity much taemin Nobunaga was but suddenly in 1613 that view changed as well where the execution of Christians suddenly increased in number however historians generally believed that this can be attributed to stress and personal strain of a particularly compelling in hard life as opposed to the theory that Tokugawa Ieyasu was more than just one man what do you guys think of Tokugawa Ieyasu is long and turbulent life do you have a favorite part fish fruitful career or other areas
in which you disliked about Ieyasu based on his decisions let me know in the comments below and don't forget to Like and subscribe for more legends of history in our next video we'll be covering a samurai he only had one eye and for all those who prefer the short videos they'll be on their way back to before I let you go though I'd like to read that one of Gary es whose famous quotes which I think we can all apply to our everyday lives there are 7 emotions joy anger anxiety adoration grief fear and hate
if a man does not give way to these then he can be called patient I am not as strong as I might be but I have long known and practiced patience and if my descendants wish to be as I am they must study patience until the next time guys
