[Music] have you ever wondered what makes native speakers sound different from non-native speakers you're probably thinking accent pronunciation and yes you're right but native speakers also take into account the subtleties of the language and the choice of words used they also have a wealth of language that allows them to use different phrases to express the same idea this might sound difficult but it's nothing that you can't learn with some practice and that's exactly what we're going to do today i'm nicole and in today's video we have a short sketch for you try to identify what
can be improved in order to sound more natural but before we get started don't forget to subscribe to our channel okay let's get started hey there are you sarah's friend who's visiting for a few days yes she was very kind to let me stay at her place my name is victoria i'm pleased to meet you nice to meet you too i'm charlotte are you enjoying your stay how do you like the city i'm enjoying it very much i think it's quite a big and hectic city but i think that's what i need at the moment
i'm thinking about moving here at some point that's awesome can i get you a drink yes please thank you very much as you may have noticed even though victoria our non-native speaker did not make any grammar mistakes she doesn't sound as natural as charlotte does this has to do with her word choice and the lack of informal expressions so let's see what can be improved my name is victoria i'm pleased to meet you even though saying my name is is grammatically correct usually a native speaker will just say i'm and notice the contraction here we
don't say i am but rather i'm now when you meet someone new it's very formal to say i'm pleased to meet you it is much more common to say nice to meet you and notice that we don't usually include it is before nice to meet you we simply say nice to meet you i'm enjoying it very much i think it's quite a big and hectic city but i think that's what i need at the moment i'm thinking about moving here at some point as we said in the beginning a native speaker has the ability and
knowledge to use different words and phrases to express the same idea here victoria is using the exact same word over and over again which makes her vocabulary seem limited when you want to express your thoughts in formal situations instead of using i think try saying honestly speaking i suppose i feel that i'm finding if you ask me in a casual scenario you could say i feel that i'd say to me there are plenty of possibilities she also uses the ing form of the verb to think in this case you could also use the ing form
of the verb to consider yes please thank you very much when speaking you want to adapt your language to the situation and environment that you are in if victoria were in a formal business meeting it would be completely appropriate to use the expression she used but she was at a party where everyone was speaking in a more informal way a more informal way of saying thank you or thank you very much would be a simple thanks depending on the context you could also say thanks so much that's very kind of you i really appreciate it
you shouldn't have or i owe you one but again it all depends on the situation that you're in now that you've learned phrases to sound like a native speaker watch this other video to learn how to think like one until next time stay curious and keep practicing
