[Music] this question comes to us from Dane and Baton Rouge and this is a really good question because it's it it was what hurt me as a player initially and the explanation of the face and how it was supposed to work basically made the game very complex for me when it was really easy when I started face control make the ball go straight was not a problem I drew everything almost the first day I started hitting golf balls some of it had to do where instinctively where I put my hands and a lot of it
had to do with how my right hand worked and what it was doing to the clubface so his question is the right hand he says ok so if my right hand works this way in my right forms doing that then when I get to the top pieces first of all when I get here the clubface looks closed well no no no see the industry would say that's closed well that's just their perception actually when you look at the face here the leading edge is in line with my spine angle when I go there right there
the leading edge is in line with my spine angle so that face is not closed as square that is dramatically open to my swing Center which is what hurt me as a player when they start telling me the face had to do this and the toe had to either go up or be on the shaft plane then it had to come down like that and what that created was maybe I couldn't hook it but now through the ball I had to have a lot of face rotation to catch the face up so what is Square
well that's actually Square to your swing Center it's not closed that's where my club gets on the backswing it's right there now if it was if it was parallel to the ground that would be a little shot but this where I spent most of my career and was taught to take it there I've had to do a lot of twisting of the face so that's actually square visually you have to get you and understand why that's not shot initially when you start doing this what people think is what's shot relative to what your perception your
concept or what you thought was square before all right now the question then becomes he says it's shut the look shut then when I go to the top it's gonna be really shot well no wait a minute if I went here and when I went to the top if my right arm didn't rotate it all in my shoulder sockets if you watch this face I go here now as I'm going up my right arm is rotating in my shoulder socket so when I get to the top that clubface isn't shot there's a lot of players
who are playing right now where the face is actually looking straight at the sky you know or for sure it's it's not toe down so if my arm didn't rotate and I did this okay that face might be a little shot but as soon as my arm rotates in my shoulder socket my right wrist keeps doing what it's supposed to do that face at the top is not that shot now he says when he does this and he gets it here coming down he pull hook sever ething okay why if you've been used to doing
this which was my world if you're used to coming down and wherever you have the club if the face is like that and you're coming in the ball you're gonna have to do some twisting of your forearm to catch the face up now all of a sudden what's gonna make this work if the face is there and I do the same thing where's the ball gonna go well it's gonna be a pull hook so your right arm if you get it in the right position if you get your right arm and your right wrist in
the right position right here which is not like this that's a way to play I spent most of my career trying to get here and we don't even have to go into the reasons why but that was supposed to keep me from hooking it and I was supposed to get here so I could rotate as hard as I could never hook it well yes but I could also hit it off the golf course to the right if you get your right hand right there now the club is going to be out in front of your
hands and the face is that a 90 degree angle to my swing mark so now as I come into the ball the club runs into the ball now my right forearm is going this way it's going around to the left and my right wrist is doing this so the face isn't twisting at all but my wrist is still allowing the weight of the club to go that's how I started playing that's because they came out of this sport and my right hand worked this way that's how I throw so I throw darts that's how I
hit a tennis ball it's not twit it's not twist and twist it's boom boom so the reason you're hitting pull hooks most of you is either getting the club out you twist with your shoulders which would pull it but if it's pull hooking the face is getting closed which means your arms are rotating too much so that doesn't mean that you start holding the handle off you just got to teach your right hand to release or throw this way runs into the ball it swings around to the left this is a pretty simple motion I
mean that's easy to duplicate this one this one is hard that's where I spent my whole career get the face open lag the club turn the face down no wonder I struggled consistent ball striking so now I'm here my arm rotates to the top so the face is good it gets right there I run into the ball and frigging ball goes straight it's so easy to be consistent with your ball flight because there's minimal face rotation relative to your swing arc and there's a lot of acceleration in the club head because you're not holding the
face off it drives me crazy when they say Dustin Johnson has a shot face in the way he hits it and doesn't hook it as he holds the face off no he does and he's going like that as hard as he can go he's not holding the face off that's a misconception of what he's doing you understand those couple of things you're gonna get significantly better [Music] be sure to subscribe to my channel for regular updates and tips thanks for watching
