hello everyone and welcome back to royalty now where we bring you face to face with figures from the past and talk about their history in part one of Caesar's life we talked about a young Julia Caesar's rise through the Roman ranks today we'll talk about the climax of Caesar's legendary life which ended in one of history's most dramatic moments at the end we'll reveal our facial Recreations of Caesar during that fateful day on The Ides of March Dark Eyed and silver tonged sensual and violent Caesar possessed Supreme practical ability he used it to change the world driven by his love for Rome and his lust for Domination if you were a citizen of Rome in 59 B. C. E it was more than likely that you had strong feelings towards Rome's new Consul gas Julius Caesar the average citizen would probably tell you that they loved him the average Senator would not not Caesar had been elected as cul of Rome in 59 BCE but only with the massive help of his political alliance with Rome's most respected General pompy and a masterful businessman named crus together their Alliance broke years of brutal and corrupt stalemate in the Senate and was now the dominant political force in Rome for their support Caesar owed crus and pompy a great deal he was the youngest and least established of their Alliance but it had been Caesar who had convinced the two to look past their differences and form the alliance in the first place and although he was young Caesar was incredibly ambitious between Caesar's official Powers as Consul crus immense wealth used for bribes and pompy's military veterans used as unofficial police the triumvirate was Unstoppable Caesar would have a glorious year as Consul passing sweeping changes many of which Direct benefited the people of Rome granting Caesar who was already loved even more popularity but as we all know you can always have too much of a good thing and Caesar's Rivals began to use his popularity with the people against him although pompy was an incredibly successful General rich and very respected he was always self-conscious about his ability in politics and to make things worse he was an incredibly paranoid man the other Senators would be using this paranoia to make cracks in Triumph anytime Caesar's Ally pompy would enter the senate floor booze would erupt until he made it to a seat anytime Caesar entered Roars of Applause would follow in reality Caesar knew exactly what was going on and he knew that no matter how unbothered pompy pretended to be his blood was boiling under the surface in order to save his alliance with pompy Caesar would make a big sacrifice and arranged for pompy to marry his only daughter Julia who had grown to be intelligent witty and just as Charming as her father despite the fact that she was nearly 30 years younger than pompy Julia would accept although we don't know if this was for her father's sake or her own luckily the marriage turned out to be surprisingly happy and loving for both involved and some Senators even began to complain that pompy seemed to have lost all interest in the Republic after his marriage [Music] for Caesar this had been yet another calculated risk that turned out in his favor a trait that many took for impulsiveness in his youth but time had proven that he was just an intensely pensive man he was always thinking of The Next Step the next problem and the next solution he had worked hard to keep his scheming behind a smoke screen always cleverly feigning his own ambitious plans as generosity or loyalty to a friend but after Decades of hard politics in Rome it was time to think ahead to the next chapter in his life he decided to leave Rome and was able to pull some strings in order to get himself appointed as the governor of several regions in Gaul he would not return to Rome for 9 years although by no means an old man at 41 Caesar was starting his career as a general quite late to give you some context Alexander the Great was dead by 33 Napoleon would fight at waterl at age 42 and Hannibal would fight his last battle at 45 although Caesar had done incredibly well during his youth in the Army no one would have guessed that he was about to prove himself to be one of the greatest commanders of all time especially not his men at least not after the first few weeks on the border of transalpine Gul now modern day Switzerland a mass of 368,000 Kelts known as the were ravaging and pillaging the lands of a Roman Ally called the oui when you were conquered by Rome it meant that you also fell under its protection and there was an expectation that you would be protected from any real threat to your lives Caesar would use this opportunity to test his skills in battle as a commander for the first time his men would March 750 mi in 8 days this March would have his soldiers walking an insane average of 90 m per day morning noon and night and when they arrived they found themselves facing a force of 90,000 fighting men since they were outnumbered Caesar would decide to attack the helvetti camp at night splitting his Force into two groups unfortunately the night would not go as he planned not long after the attack a panicked Scout officer relayed to Caesar with full confidence that he had seen helvetti forces taking The High Ground Caesar would immediately order a retreat only to find later that his second group of men had successfully taken the hill as planned and then suddenly saw him Retreat leaving them incredibly vulnerable no matter what the truth was Caesar knew that to his men it had appeared as though he had panicked had become overwhelmed and had ordered the retreat in haste an embarrassment and a horrible first impression that even caused some of the oui Warriors to Desert the Romans and side with the helvetti the very next day the newly confident helvetti Force presented themselves for [Music] battle Caesar who was incredibly self-aware of his previous mistakes knew that this was a pivotal moment he decided to make a grand gesture to his men he dismounted his horse and sent it away leaving him deserted on the battlefield just like his men no matter what happened the battle began shortly after noon and as the enormous helvetti Force crashed into the tight Roman lines Caesar remained with his men for the next 12 hours of brutal fighting before the defeated helvetti were forced to retreat the Roman army had suffered 5,000 casualties but in return Caesar had learned how to lead in war he was no longer living his cushy life in Rome but he was still guas Julius Caesar and he would not let anyone including himself forget that again Caesar's Victory against the helvetti meant other tribes who were also desperate for protection began to ask him for Aid first there was a brutal and arrogant German King named Ario Vistas who personally mocked and threatened Caesar by reminding him that many senators in Rome would celebrate if something unfortunate were to happen to him Caesar's men who had initially been fearful of the tall and foreign Germans would annihilate Aro vista's Army at the Battle of vosque killing over 880,000 German Warriors and forcing the king to flee across the rine never to be heard from in history again this Victory shattered any doubt the men had about Caesar's leadership but it was the way he treated them that began to inspire the fierce loyalty that would come to be known of them he would never talk down to them by calling them men or soldiers instead referring to them always as his comrades and unlike many generals of the time he treated them with respect learning their names and always rewarding and promoting those who fought valiantly regardless of their family background to Caesar courage was the only currency that mattered by 57 BCE he had earned the men's trust and it became clear that he wasn't Eng G just to police the area and protect his Roman allies he had much bigger plans there's nothing worse than taking forever to doze off at night just to toss and turn during the time I'm asleep sure I could belg the nervi and the Vetti would bend to Caesar's will after each tribe's defeat Caesar would meet with its leaders and make them an offer become a Roman Ally and Rome will protect you in return Caesar would get soldiers and resources for the tribes that accepted Caesar always honored their deals but if a tribe were to break their promise to him a horrible side of C C would emerge in 56 BCE when the Vetti broke peace with Caesar by capturing and killing Roman officers his response was Swift and merciless the entire Vetti ruling Council which consisted of the trib's eldest and most respected men was executed on the spot and every man of fighting age was sold into slavery causing damage that would take decades perhaps even longer to repair for Caesar cruelty of its own sake was never the goal but if it brought him an advantage he didn't have a single issue doing what he had to do yet years of war had seemed to numb Caesar to the brutality of his actions in 55 bcee Caesar was in the midst of peace talks with the G tribe when a GIC Cavalry Force killed a group of Caesar Scouts he would then launch a campaign of brutal Revenge burning down villages and slaughtering thousands when the Germans retreated across the Rine Caesar decided to build a bridge across the river and follow them the bridge nearly 1300 ft long and completed in just 10 days was a testament to Roman Ingenuity and Caesar's audacity after 18 days of pillaging the countryside Caesar returned to Gaul leaving the Germans stunned and terrified he had crossed the Rind not out of necessity but to show that no man no River no border could stop him him by his own account his men had taken 400,000 lives when the news that Caesar had crossed the rine reached Rome Caesar was celebrated for his glorious achievement yet others like KO Caesar's most bitter rival saw this ruthless killing as a horrible tragedy so cruel that many now wish to prosecute him for war crimes instead with pompy and crus help the Senate decided to reward C with another 5 years in Gul which was perfect for Caesar because he was in no rush to return to Rome since he had left Rome had become messy and increasingly violent corruption was rampant and gangs supported by the Senators began having fullscale battles in the streets and the beating and killing of political opponents became less and less secretive with one man even arrested for attempting to assassinate pompy this assassination is thought by historian to have been a psychological hit by pompy's enemies it was well known that being murdered was pompy's worst fear in life so much so that he constantly suffered from recurring nightmares about it this only made things worse and it made him more and more paranoid of everything and everyone soon Caesar would cross not only once but twice into Britain becoming the first Roman to set foot on its mystical soil adding yet another glorious achievement to Caesar's resume never had pompy thought of Caesar as a true rival once responding to the question of Caesar Rising against him with and what if my son wants to attack me with a stick implying not just the ease of dealing with such a threat but how unlikely it was that it would even happen but as Caesar's name was once again cheered through the streets of Rome pompy's paranoia might have started a strange new feeling towards Caesar jealousy no one truly knows when the first thoughts began to creep into pompy's mind what we do know is that the first Domino fell in 54 BCE the story told by Plutarch states that pompy was making his way through an Angry Crowd when his robe was stained by the blood of some of the rioter a slave carried the stained toga to his house and it was seen by his now pregnant wife Julia Julia of course imagined that pompy's greatest night nightmare of being assassinated had come true and she became hysterical soon falling into premature labor before tragically dying in childbirth pompy was inconsolable he wrote to Caesar with the news and Caesar was equally devastated Julia had been Caesar's only child and he never dreamt that when he left Rome 6 years prior it would be the last time he would see her face although historians argue about whether or not I's death weakened the bond between pompy and Caesar what's very clear is that it marks what I would call the beginning of the end it's said that Caesar never got over the death of his daughter Caesar's usual skill at keeping the GS in check seemed to falter with his grief and after a failed Harvest and a brutal winter rebellions began to crop up all over Gaul resulting in extremely high Roman casualties these rebellions inspired other tribes to revolt against Caesar as well and although Caesar would punish anyone who betrayed him just as brutally as he had done before they no longer cared as the Galls began to rise against him another Domino fell in 53 BCE crus the third member of the trium and the richest man in Rome felt outshined by Caesar and pompy's Military glory and set out to find some of his own he would instead be swiftly defeated in Roman Syria and was captured while trying to to negotiate for his life as a symbol of his insatiable greed the parthians killed him by pouring molten gold directly into his mouth with the death of crus the alliance that had dominated Rome for the last decade the triumphant was no more Caesar of course wanted to solidify his relationship with pompy but the situation in Gul could no longer be ignored in 52 bcee a man named vers in G was given leadership of the entire GAC Army which was finally able to Rally under one Banner of GAC Independence verson GX was a brilliant and ruthless man who had spent years studying Caesar's tactics driven by hate and the Hop that one day he would be the one to kill Caesar in their first Clash at the Battle of grovia Caesar realized too late that he was facing No Ordinary Gul and a quarter of his men were slaughtered before he could retreat and for the first time Caesar's Aura of invincibility was shaken for nearly a decade Caesar had been tirelessly driven by his ambition his demand for Glory and his pursuit to conquer Gaul yet in that Pursuit he had lost and suffered immensely the loss of comrades the loss of family the loss of time he would never get back he could not and would not let it all go to waste now Caesar regrouped his men and pursued vers anded to the Fortified town of Alesia where the two men faced off in one of the most famous sieges in history over the next 2 weeks Caesar and first anded would match each other's wit and ruthlessness but when 200,000 GAC reinforcements arrived at the Battle it appeared Caesar had been outplayed yet none of his men mutinied or wept tearfully at the overwhelming sight instead they prepared for battle Caesar rode between each of his Legions motivating his men they clashed into the G force and would not surrender until every last one of them was dead at the end of it all nearly 13,000 Romans died the largest loss that Caesar had ever admitted to by his own account 250,000 GS were killed verson would surrender to Caesar in dramatic fashion riding his beautifully adorned horse out of IA and around Caesar's Camp before dismounting in front of Caesar stripping himself of his armor and sitting down at his opponent's feet verson GED would be held prisoner for 6 years before being publicly displayed and strangled at one of Caesar's triumphs in 46 B.
C Caesar's Victory extended Roman rule to the r in the East the English Channel in the North and the Atlantic coast in the West yet 1 million Gs are estimated to have been killed with 1 million more sold into slavery by the end of Caesar's time in Gaul he was wealthier had more extensive network of friends and clients and could boast of Greater and more glorious achievements than any other senator in Rome except for one pompy had spent the last few years dedicating himself fully back into politics and as the only man who could possibly stand up to Caesar he found himself incredibly popular Caesar had written to pompy expressing his plans to return back to Rome and stand for a second consulship but under the influence of some of Caesar's most bitter Rivals pompy began to harden to Caesar's proposals and even began allowing Caesar's enemies to debate openly if Caesar should be prosecuted for the legal irregularities of his first consulship they would also begin to spew misinformation that fed pompy's insecurities Caesar now had the unshakable Loyalty of 11 battle hardened Legions solah who had taken Rome when Caesar was a child had only needed six the Senate declared Caesar's appointment as governor of Gaul would not be extended and ordered him to disband his Legions and return to Rome as a private citizen this was more than a demand it was a threat if Caesar returned without his army he would be defenseless against his political enemies but if he marched on Rome with his army he would be seen as an enemy of the Republic as Dawn broke on January 11th 49 bce. Caesar stepped onto the edge of a small river in northern Italy called the Rubicon for a time he thought silently to himself before turning to his men and uttering the Fateful words let the die be cast everyone knew what this meant it was a point of no return Caesar was marching on Rome Panic set in among the Senators and Aristocrats who saw Caesar's Advance as a tyrant's ambition a betrayal of Rome's sacred Republic pompy now the sole Consul was seen as Rome's last defense he had promised the Senate that he only needed to stamp his foot to raise an army but in truth he was caught off guard Rome was a city divided and with Caesar closing in pompy made the desperate decision to abandon the capital entirely rallying his forces in the East where he could raise an army to challenge Caesar on his own terms the Civil War for Rome had begun Caesar entered Rome unopposed greeted by empty streets and shuttered doors his occupation was Swift and unbloody but his true challenge was still ahead with pompy regrouping in Greece Caesar set his sights on capturing the Western provinces and consolidating power swiftly he crushed pompeian forces in Spain and then turned his attention Eastward Crossing into Greece to face pompy directly pompy had established a massive Army in Greece numbering nearly 40,000 infantry and 7,000 Cavalry outmatching Caesar's Legions both in number and Supply in August of 48 BCE the two armies faced each other on the scorching Plains of fareless pompy's army was wellfed well rested and confident many of his men had scornfully dismissed Caesar's legance as ragged and exhausted from their long campaigns in Gaul Caesar was no stranger to odds being stacked against him he knew his men's strength and loyalty in a bold move he placed his weaker forces at the front lines baiting pompy into a premature charge as pompy's Army surged forward Caesar's men simply held their ground and then at Caesar's command they pushed forward with a ferocity that shocked pompy's ranks for hours the two armies clashed in brutal combat neither side yielding but in the end the unbreakable will of Caesar and his men prevailed in disbelief pompy watched his supposedly Superior forces crumble his confidence shattered he fled the field leaving his remaining troops to their fate although pompy no longer had an army Caesar knew that he would need to personally pursue and capture his former friend and Ally in order to truly bring the Civil War to an end pompy would flee to Egypt a kingdom under Roman influence but wary of Caesar's Growing Power the young Pharaoh tmy the 12th fearing Caesar's wrath and hoping to gain his favor did not give pompy a warm welcome just as pompy climbed to shore his worst fear came true he was assassinated in Cold Blood when Caesar arrived in Alexandria 3 days later he was presented pompy's head as a gift by the young Pharaoh Caesar could do nothing but stare in horror at the offering and he began to weep uncontrollably pompy's death was not just the death of a rival but a friend and former son-in-law a man who had once loved his daughter deeply and a man that for many years had loyally protected him Caesar had wanted nothing more than to forgive pompy and to be acknowledged as his equal perhaps even his Superior pompy's acknowledgement could have finally been the thing that satisfied Caesar's ambition but with him now gone Caesar's ambition only grew in Egypt he became entangled with Cleopatra the young and ambitious Queen their Alliance was personal political and advantageous for both and the two would have a passionate Affair that led to the birth of a son cesarian with Cleopatra by his side Caesar defeated tm's forces securing her Rule and cementing his own influence in the East he then stomped out any remaining pompeian leaders including KO Caesar's lifelong rival who once defeated decided that he would rather commit suicide than live under Caesar's rule when Caesar finally returned to Rome he was given the title of dictator for Life granting him near absolute power yet even though he did not truly abuse this absolute power paron his enemies and refused to take any Crown after a while even those closest to him began to fear that Caesar would eventually become a threat to the very Republic he claimed to serve one of those close allies was Marcus Junius Brutus Brutus was the son of a woman that Caesar had passionately loved his entire life cilia Caesar had not only forgiven Brutus for siding with pompy in the Civil War but had even allowed him into his most trusted Inner Circle what makes this relationship with Caesar tragic is that some historians believe that Brutus could have been Caesar's illegitimate son which could explain why Caesar treated him with such care and forgiveness yet even Brutus who had benefited greatly from Caesar's rule had become convinced that Caesar's ambition would destroy the Rome he loved something had to be done on the IDS of March 44 b. c.
