when discussing deep sea monsters the megalodon always seems to pop up in conversation but what about the bloop some haven't even heard of this large underwater creature let alone what it even was but according to ultra low frequency data recorded in 1997 there is a very large marine fish or a squid of some sort prowling in the ocean i'm still in the belly right now bloop was believed to only exist in jewish scripture but what if it's real in the deep dark depths of the ocean there's nothing quite so unnerving as the unknown so if
the bloop does exist how would it compare to the megalodon if they were to face off in the ocean in a match between the megalodon versus bloop who would win we've all witnessed the often terrifying images of sharks over the years from great whites to hammerheads these aquatic beasts can give you a real fright whether you're sitting on your couch watching shark week or a diver in a shark cage experiencing it firsthand sharks have been known to grow to unfathomable lengths and for others their size is all in the jeans they're just destined for greatness
the whale shark is one of those sharks it is considered one of the most harmless but can reach lengths of up to 10 meters now that might sound large but the whale shark has nothing on the prehistoric megalodon this monstrous species of shark was believed to have reached lengths of up to and over 18 meters making it the biggest shark to ever exist in the deep blue sea the shark is now extinct but it is still widely discussed by researchers today and has been made even more famous on the big screen featuring in the 2018
science fiction action film the mag t the megalodon is referred to by experts as the charcoal's megalodon which means big tooth that's a pretty appropriate name for it too given that it had about 278 teeth set in five rows it's easy to see why most photos are just of its exceptionally large mouth and razor-sharp teeth like modern sharks the meg discarded its teeth frequently as they became worn not surprising considering their reputation for being a vicious killing machine their teeth were also believed to have much finer serrations than great white sharks so would have been
significantly sharper they are also nearly three times larger than the teeth of any modern great white shark do you imagine i wonder how bloop's teeth would compare just looking at pictures i think the meg has it beat on this one where did they live this absolutely astonishing extinct species of shark is thought to have lived somewhere between three to twenty million years ago which would have lined up with the early miocene to the pliocene period the shark was initially regarded as a member of the lamina day family then linked to the infamous great white but
since its extinction it has become part of the otodontidae family these are an extinct family of sharks with members that have been described as mega-toothed sharks when did they live there's also been a lot of research compiled surrounding what period of time the meg existed in various authors place it in charcoals megasalacis oditus or procarcaridon the reason for the confusion is because several fossils have shown megalodon is the final chrono species of a lineage of giant sharks these sharks were originally of the genus odidus which evolved during the paleocene unfortunately there is still no confirmation
and the subject continues to be widely debated by authors and researchers today this type of controversy follows many extinct animals and even those that are believed to still be alive like the bloop his or her origins are even more difficult to pinpoint as their mere existence has never been officially confirmed aggression not only was the meg the largest shark to ever roam the sea fossilized bones and remains of its massive teeth have given many researchers and scientists plenty of information about the prehistoric monster they now have concrete evidence of how the creature would have behaved
and when it may have completely died out judging by its size you could imagine it was probably the king of the ocean and definitely not one to be messed with other ocean dwellers would have been ducking for cover if they came eye to eye with this behemoth that's for sure as we know already the megalodon was quite easily the largest fish to ever exist its appearance however wasn't entirely what you'd expect as an outsider looking in unique species or just a great white many people just classed the megalodon as a giant version of its brethren
great white shark and that is true for the most part both have hundreds of pearly white teeth and even the shape of them are often compared to that of the great white's teeth but their body appearances were slightly different the prehistoric shark was very bulky in comparison to its slimmer relative it was torpedo-shaped like the great white with a conical snout large pectoral and dorsal fins with a very solid crescent-shaped tail the biggest difference was really just how much bigger the meg was even simple estimates gauged the shark was a giant in comparison to the
great white although we can probably be grateful we don't have one living amongst us its fossils and teeth have helped experts to calculate an estimated body mass the data very much points towards adults having an average length of 10 meters which is only slightly bigger than the current largest shark the whale shark however there's some research that confirms several specimens of the shark were much larger reaching lengths of nearly 18 meters and possibly even 25 meters i can't even comprehend how large that would be in comparison to the average pleasure boat on the ocean could
you imagine seeing something like that swimming underneath you i would seriously be looking to get out of the water quick smart it's hard to say looking at images of bloop whether it would measure up in the length department but if the size of its mouth is anything to go by this mysterious sea creature might be just as large wait the meg's weight gives us another reason to shudder and also sigh with relief that they've disappeared from the ocean estimates have an adult weighing roughly 30 tons that's 30 000 kilograms and one hefty fish if that
weight doesn't sound quite crazy enough some females reached 65 tons which tallies up to a whopping and unfathomable 65 000 kilos surprisingly when it comes to the ocean and even on land the adult female is often larger than the adult male in terms of both length and mass so if you think a male fish looks big you'd better hope his partner is nowhere close by you would assume that with that weight the megalodon's diet would consist of almost anything in fact i have images of it just gobbling up anything in its path without even taking
a second look i mean they could probably chomp on a couple of great whites and still be looking for another snack wouldn't you say well you would be right an unstoppable hunger according to research they would have eaten whales dolphins other large fish and probably even sharks it goes without saying really that if you're that big you need to eat a lot of food so large prey is on the menu it brings a whole new meaning to keep your friends close and your enemies closer doesn't it you would want to be sleeping with one eye
open beside one of these characters that's for sure it makes you wonder what bloop might dine on perhaps the meg was on the menu hence their extinction evidence of the meg's feeding habits are quite identifiable in the form of fossilized whale bones some of these bones have been discovered with cut marks and indents like the shape of a megalodon tooth etching through the surface other circumstances have seen bits of teeth breaking out of the shark's mouth and staying in or on the victim when the attacks occurred millions of years prior can you imagine swimming around
the ocean with a couple of old sharks teeth stuck in your body i wonder if they'd be annoying i suppose they can't exactly pluck them out with a pair of tweezers can they are they still out there there are a lot of people out there that believe these gigantic sharks still roam the deep dark depths of our ocean i guess it's simply human nature that people have their suspicions but where would they have hidden all these years it's not like they're small is it surely a fisherman out there would have spotted one poking its head
up on the surface looking for a tasty morsel or attempting to eat his boat far too many years have passed by for this character to still be prowling the deep at least that's my theory anyway and i'm sticking to it its extinction like that of the dinosaur is pretty much set in stone but it does make you question what caused its eventual demise climate change seems to be the most probable and has been responsible for the extinction of many sea and land creatures unfortunately the earth experienced a lot of dramatic changes during the megalodon's lifetime
and these changes would have seriously affected it and other marine life a cooling trend started in the oliga scene 35 million years ago ultimately leading to the glaciation at the poles plenty of geological related occurrences affected and changed currents and precipitation this was also a leading factor to the closing of the central american seaway in the tethy's ocean along with that the stalling of the gulf stream at the time was a significant issue as it prevented nutrient-rich water from making its way to marine ecosystems this negatively affected its food sources the largest fluctuation of sea
levels in the cenozoic era occurred in the plyo pleistocene between around 5 million to 12 000 years ago due to the expansion of glaciers at the poles this negatively impacted coastal environments and may have contributed to the meg's extinction along with several other marine mega faunal species these oceanographic changes especially the dropping of sea levels could have proven fatal to the megalodon who was left unable to visit suitable shallow warm water nursery sites these sites are pivotal for the sharks to survive and without them they are put at great risk as they can't protect their
young from other predators as easily without that protection their young may have been eaten by other large predators maybe even the bloop who knows the megalodon's fossils were excavated from many different parts of the world including europe africa america and australia it is possible that had things been different they may have lived all over the world although many would have feared their presence they would have been fascinating to study with a bite force more powerful than a tyrannosaurus rex and measuring up to an estimated meters long the megalodon will go down in history as one
of the planet's greatest monsters of all time unless of course the bloop is found to be bigger better and better stay tuned bloop right so this is where things get a little mythical well at least until research is confirmed and sightings are made we've mentioned the bloop briefly in the intro but what exactly is it a disturbing legend well nobody really knows at the moment it is a purely fictional ocean dweller that may or may not be ruling the ocean following the extinction of the megalodon it's a little bit like a king kong vs t-rex
scenario one is a man-made creation for the movie screen the other is a giant reptile that once roamed the earth with the bloop however it's pretty difficult to gauge its size weight or even its appearance as it's simply a noise a vibration heard on sonar of what appears to be a giant beast that now calls the ocean home mystery and unanswered questions is it larger than the meg could it take the giant shark on in a battle of might and power well scientists have a few theories so we'll use those to help us out here
goes so this is what we know about the bloop some 23 years after its original so-called discovery the idea of a mysterious sea creature living in the ocean originated from a sound reading to be more specific a powerful ultra low frequency underwater sound a sound that was picked up on by the national ocean and atmospheric administration or in short the noaa in 1997. this must have been some sound because ever since there has been significant discussion and a whole lot of uncertainty surrounding what exactly the sound was now these guys are experts so who are
we to question what they heard but how does a sound turn into a never been seen before fish that calls the ocean home well the noaa speculated that the sound had to have come from something very large for it to hit such a frequency it is believed to be a marine mammal of sorts but no one's exactly sure if it's an undiscovered one or simply an incredibly large version of an already existing mammal in order to describe the sound and the mysterious creature it comes from it was simply called bloop the sound returned several years
passed before bloop was heard of again so noaa decided to revisit the topic once more they soon determined that the sound was consistent with noises generated via non-tectonic cryoscissoms originating from glacial movements such as ice calving or an ice quake essentially seabed gouging by ice animalistic it has been heavily argued however that the patterns within the sound could indicate some form of animal origin the noise the creature made was compared to that of the blue whale which is currently the largest living species of animal if the bloop is said to have similar capabilities and sound
frequency then it's possible that this strange and unknown creature could be more than 250 feet in length which not only dwarfs the megalodon in size but also the biggest of blue whales plenty of experts have shut down that theory however as they have pointed out that not all animals create the same amount of noise for their size let's hope that's true because the thought of a 250-foot sea creature does not sit well with me at all this argument could however stem from any creature with the pistol shrimp a key example these shrimp are only a
few centimeters long but can create a sound so loud it's only matched by that of a jet airplane this has led people to believe that the bloop could be far smaller than estimated and perhaps not visible to the naked eye not alive at all christopher fox of noaa believes that while the audio profile of bloop does resemble that of a living creature the source was a mystery because it would be far more powerful than the calls made by any other animal on earth he initially speculated bloop was an ice caving in antarctica but later decided
the sound was more likely that of an animal scientists are still eager to find the origin of the bloop but with a good 90 of the ocean still unexplored it could be an underwater secret that might just be locked away for quite some time this certainly hasn't stopped the theories however with many arguing that the bloop could possibly be a product of top secret underwater military others link the sound to ship engines or fishing boat winches but the most popular theory of all is that it's an unknown creature that the world is still yet to
see what the bloop looks like is of course a mystery and as time goes on it's not likely we'll ever see it in our lifetime we can only go on what researchers have said most are leading towards it being a living being some think that it could be an octopus with some of the largest dead giants being recorded at about 60 feet in length endless horrifying possibilities there are several other creatures that the bloop could be linked to leviathans have been a point of discussion in the past though they only really exist in scripture krakens
are another and there's even a possibility that the bloop is just another species of shark it could even be a megalodon but that would be considered a bit of a stretch for years sailors have told tales of monsters of the deep including the huge many tentacled kraken that could reach as high as a ship's main mast and sink the biggest ships however phil lobel a marine biologist at boston university massachusetts doubts that a giant squid is the source of the secret sound he says that with no gas-filled sack cephalopods have no way to make that
type of noise although he didn't rule it out completely he believed it was extremely doubtful so that theory might be dead in the water so to speak bloop's true nature what is certain however is that there are many hidden creatures yet to be discovered that live under the sea my goodness where's my phone but is one of those bloop is it a shark a squid or some other sea monster like the infamous loch ness is it as large as our extinct friend the meg did it play a role in the meg's extinction will we ever
know for the researchers to even come close to finding this creature today they would need to encounter that sound again and after 23 years it might not be likely it's been established that the megalodon is an absolutely monstrous shark that existed millions of years ago research has proven this the bloop on the other hand is merely a sound experts have not been able to trace the noise to anything living in the ocean but believe it could be a giant sea creature measuring up to 250 feet unfortunately because it has never been identified in the eyes
of many it may not even exist but let's suppose it does on the basis that its size is a mystery i believe the bloop has an advantage the meg doesn't know its opponent and it could be that the bloop is another meg but looking at pictures of the mystery creature the meg would have a bite size and bite force advantage they also have a reputation for being ruthless no opponent is too tough so i think the meg would win let us know who you think would win between these two in the comments down below and
we'd also be keen to find out more information and theories on the bloop if you have any also check out our other cool stuff showing up on screen right now see you next time
